Challenges that accompanied Covid-19

-Himanshi Sharma & Dr. Farzana Wani

April 26, 2021

"Timely taken preventative measures have the ability to minimise the damage towards

humanity & the environment."

The never-ending challenge of infectious viral diseases can emerge and re-emerge in

unpredictable regions and at unpredictable times. Along with this deadly virus -COVID,

various other diseases have come into existence that are affecting our lives badly.

A few years back, predictions about Mucormycosis(Black Fungus) affecting India badly stood

true. Mucormycosis is quite a rare infection that is already prevalent in our environment and

impacting us now severely. Its colours are defined based on the symptoms.

The Black fungus evolved along with this pandemic because health has been affected to a great

extent. According to medical experts, Mucormycosis has a mortality rate of 50%; its symptoms

are triggered by using steroids, a life-saving treatment for critically-ill COVID – 19 patients.

With diabetic patients, COVID -19 and these diseases act as fuel to the fire. Symptoms such as

bleeding nose and swelling, eye pain, drooping of eyelids, and poor vision can be prevented by

taking precautions beforehand with the utilisation of mustard oil or molecular iodine-based

formulations, which are more effective and best for health conditions as their effect remains

for 6 hours and is non-toxic to human cells. The use of alum for washing eyes and face must

be included as it's helpful to get rid of germs. Antifungal intravenous injections are reserved

for critically ill patients.

Along with this, the Yellow fungus has also come into existence which causes laziness, severe

weight loss, and loss of appetite because of low immunity. Antifungal drugs, including

amphotericin B injections, are used for patients suffering from this disease. The White fungus,

which badly affects cough, fever, diarrhoea, dark spots on the lungs, and reduced oxygen

levels, affects more people with other diseases or less immunity power.

Fragile healthcare systems, increased population mobility, rapid urbanisation, climate change,

pollution, weak surveillance, limited laboratory diagnostic capacity, and increased human

interaction are the main risk factors that contribute to the emergence and rapid spread of

diseases. It forces us to adapt, react and reconsider the nature of our relationships with the

natural world, which is emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases are epiphenomena of

human existence. As our population is progressively growing, we are also generating an

endless variety of opportunities for genetically unstable infectious agents to evolve into the

unfilled ecological niche.

We need to accept that we live in a world dominated by humans in which our increasingly

severe alterations of the environment lead to increasingly severe backlashes from nature. This

pandemic is a warning that aggressively, damaging unbalanced interactions with nature are

destroying our future, and that's how we will provoke new diseases to emerge. It's a reminder

to stay fit and physically active, boost immunity and take care of the environment to ensure a

better future.
