Star seller
Dear friend and bookseller
In this edition of the SaltWay catalogue, we are
delighted to welcome on board Royal Botanical Gardens
Edinburgh Publishing, whose gorgeously created books
beautifully complement our client Kew Publishing’s
leading list on botanical interest, study and art.
Also, joining the SaltWay fleet, Al Astar brings
to us extraordinary and absolutely unique photodocumentaries
on the Mosque in Mecca and those
pilgrims, clerics and guardians who attend to and
worship at this most holy of Islamic sites.
SaltWay has, for some years, represented Grange
Publishing - who are the official publishers of Premier
Annuals; so we are delighted that their new sister
And from all our other wonderful and carefully curated
engaging, informative and charming new titles in which
we very much hope you find real interest.
With best wishes
This forest of arches in the Mezquita at Córdoba captures the visual
drama of a city which, in the 10th century, became the prosperous
capital of an important caliphate. Bu the architectural reference to
oriental aesthetics glosses over the fac that this one-time grand
mosque was later converted into a Roman Catholic cathedral. Visit
Sofia
Córdoba
After a five-year gap, Sofia makes a welcome return to Europe by
Rail. It features on Route 48, newly created for the 15th edition of
fine way of taking the pulse of Sofia life (photo © Tupungato).
Lviv has been under Habsburg, Polish and Soviet control. Today it is
part of Ukraine and the end point of Routes 26, 49 and 53. This is the
Renaissance architecture. In 1998, the square was inscribed on UNESCO’s
ADULT TITLES
The rail journey from Hamburg to Budapest can be completed in a long
day. The sole direct service between the two cities takes just under 14 hours
for a journey of about 1,300 km. It rea ly does take in four capital cities in a
day. Travel a l the way through if you wi l, but the great majority of travellers
wi l stop off en route, usua ly at one or more of the fo lowing cities: Berlin,
Dresden, Prague or Bratislava. On this journey from the banks of the Elbe
to the Danube, there is a strong sense of swapping the cultural realm of
northern Europe for that of Mitteleuropa (Central Europe).
Trains over this entire route run at least every two hours throughout
the day. So, if you do break your journey along the way, you’ l find a wide
choice of onward services.
Fast track alternatives
If you are in a hurry to get from Hamburg to Budapest, there is an alternative route which
track south through western Germany to Bavaria, and then continues through Austria to
Vienna and beyond. It gives a slightly faster journey time, but always requires a change of
trains along the way (normally at Vienna).
Bear in mind, too, tha there are overnight possibilities covering parts of this route.
There is a nightly sleeper service from Hamburg to Vienna (from where it’s just a short hop
on to Budapest in the morning). A happy innovation for 2019 has been the reinstatement
of the direct night train from Berlin to Bratislava and Budapest.
The Hungaria
The direc train from Hamburg to Budapest is a Eurocity service ca led the
Hungaria. It has run from Berlin to Budapest for over half a century; only
in late 2015 was it extended to start from Hamburg. Cast back to the Cold
War days, and the Hungaria carried East German families off for summer
holidays in Hungary — where Lake Balaton was a favourite destination. It
was also the train tha transported government officials and party stalwarts
carrying fraternal greetings between the Warsaw Pact capitals. The Hungaria
was much favoured by spies too. In the 1980s, it still carried through carriages
from Sweden to Yugoslavia, both non-aligned countries, and the train was
a good spot for discreet exchanges of inte ligence as i trundled through the
central European countryside.
The Europe traversed by the Hungaria has been utterly transformed
over the last 30 years. The Iron Curtain has gone and borders have
melted. That’s not to say that you’ l necessarily be able to travel from
Berlin to Budapest without once being asked to show your passport. In
the northbound direction this rail route is one that has been much used in
LAST PHARAOH
69–30 BCE
With its bountiful harvests, watered by the mighty river Nile, Egypt
was, in the days of Cleopatra, one of the richest places in the Middle
East. It was also the only country on the Mediterranean Sea not ruled
by the Romans – yet!
Cleopatra was to be the last Pharaoh of Egypt, remaining on the
throne for an impressive twenty-one years from the age of eighteen.
Her name in Greek means “the Father-Loving Goddess,” and she was
indeed considered a goddess by her people.
How did this fascinating woman hold on to power for so long? Why
did she become so famous? She is known as a great beauty, but there is
so much more to her story. Let’s find out...
