Plants
At the heart of this book is a matching exercise between plant names in the
cuneiform record, extracted from the sources described in the preceding
chapter, and those plants actually available in ancient times, whether locally or
through import. A good starting point is a list of plants growing in the region
of Mesopotamia today, modified by evidence from ecology and archaeology
as to which were growing there 4,000 years ago. But botany has far more to
contribute. The ancient texts are full of information on the habitats of plants,
their appearance and other properties; these can help narrow down the range of
species and, sometimes, confirm identifications.
Although information on medicinal plants of the Middle East was given in
the classical and medieval works of Dioscorides, Galen, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna),
al-Rāzī (Rhazes) and Ibn al-Bayṭār, it was not until the 16th century that the
first research collection of medicinal plant specimens was made from Iraq.
Leonhart Rauwolf, a German physician, botanist and a traveller, visited
shoots, false carob shoots and linseed.
Cedar, sweet f lag, juniper berries,
juniper berry pulp and dates were kept in
clay pans that could be used for roasting.
While there is no information about the
size or shape of the pan or whether they
were open or closed, a small drawing
incised on the edge of a clay tablet gives
an image of a qabūtu jar. This kind of
container was used to store cedar tar.
habitat. Lowland forest, often in regenerating
vegetation, such as along braided river banks or
unstable slopes, from sea level to 250 m.
local names. Momboa (Manokwari), Mansinyas
(Waigeo), Pang (Matbat), Rakwa (Kaimana), Tnang Nyi
(North Cyclops).
uses. Trunks used in house construction, including
flooring. Leaves for thatching and for house walls.
Stems felled to raise edible grubs.
conservation status. Least Concern (IUCN 2021).
Palms of New Guinea
Essential companion to anyone
studying or working in the region,
