WELCOME
Tēnā koutou katoa.
Welcome to our Winter edition of Moving Together.
We hope you are all well relatively speaking as we
continue trying to co-exist as normally as possible whilst
still amid this global pandemic.
Life has never been a smooth ride. It was the author Sarah Ban Breathnach who
said “Success in life is not how well we execute Plan A; it’s how smoothly we
cope with Plan B.” For some of us I am sure we are onto Plan C, D or even E by
now. But hopefully in some shape Sport Auckland can be of some help through
our play, sport, active recreation and health initiatives.
I am often asked what Sport Auckland does. In simple terms, we are a
charitable sports trust with a vision to inspire our communities to live healthy
active lifestyles. We aim to deliver on that vision by purposefully focusing on
addressing inactivity and inequities within areas of need, in our communities.
We address inactivity and inequity through play, sport, active recreation and
health initiatives. We purposefully focus on working alongside everyone in the
“system” who can help deliver our initiatives to tamariki and rangatahi at risk
of missing out. If successful our tamariki and rangatahi will be able to reap the
lifelong rewards and benefits of healthy, active lifestyles. We also deliver on
behalf of Health New Zealand, the national Green Prescription initiative. This is
an initiative that focuses on community care for our Adult Population.
Speaking of steps in the right direction, I would like to acknowledge an
especially important “coming of age” for New Zealand. We recently celebrated
our inaugural Matariki public holiday. It is not the “holiday” itself that is
significant, it is the acknowledgement and celebration of our Indigenous history.
It was fantastic to see so many events taking place to celebrate and educate us
more fully around Matariki’s significance. We publicly acknowledge Professor Dr
Rangiānehu Mātāmua and his fellow Matariki Advisory Group members for their
tireless work over the last couple of years. Their efforts, in collaboration with
many others, has brought Matariki to the forefront where it rightfully belongs as
part of the fabric of our New Zealand society and our mana whenua.
Until our next edition, take care everyone. Do not forget to partake in as many
opportunities as you can in play, sport and active recreational activities either
alone, with friends or with wider whānau – it really is chicken soup for the soul
and helps us all maintain healthy active lives.
East Skate Club
Case Study
East Skate Club has developed an initiative
to get wheels turning for children in high
deprivation areas across Howick.
The conceptual basis for this project came
from conversations with Sport Auckland
Sector Support staff, identifying areas of
need throughout Howick. The collaboration
between East Skate Club and Sport Auckland
encouraged a targeted approach towards low
decile school students who were currently not
involved in physical activity and are low on
confidence.
“I like skateboarding
because I challenge
myself to do new tricks
and feel supported by the
cool instructors.”
The project provides opportunities to learn
new skills in a safe, supportive and fun
environment within six schools. Teachers have
provided feedback that students involved
had increased confidence as a result of this
initiative.
Inspiring our
schools
HALO Day
Healthy Active Learning Opportunities Days
(HALO) bring teachers together to participate,
engage and inspire. Led by our Healthy
Active Learning Advisors, we delivered a full
day session to 24 teachers from 13 different
schools.
Bringing Hockey to Marcellin College
Driven by the needs of their rangatahi, Marcellin
College successfully received $8,617 of Tū
Manawa Active Aotearoa funding to establish
a Hockey programme within their school. The
funding has enabled Marcellin College to provide
new opportunities for students to participate
in physical activity in a fun and inclusive
environment.
“It’s great having the
chance to play a sport
you’ve never played before.
No pressure or expectations,
just having fun.”
This programme targets inactive rangatahi, who
make up 90% of the participants. They are drawn
to the programme due to the relaxed nature of
turning up without pressure.
winter 2022
The theme for this HALO workshop was
sustaining quality physical activity and
nutrition environments. Participants took part
in a series of sessions designed to enhance
their schools physical education, play, sport,
physical activity and nutrition environments.
“Thank you for the
awesome session! Look
forward to upcoming
HALO workshops.”
Learning through moving is a key part of the
HALO workshop experience. The practical
Taonga Tākaro session proved popular with
many teachers now better equipped to teach
Te Aō Māori games. Our Healthy Active
Learning advisors and connectors kept things
fun with inclusive game ideas for PE lessons.
We are excited to see more teachers attend
our HALO workshops in the future!
“Very interactive and
learnt games that you
don’t need equipment for.
Makes it a lot easier
as a teacher to get the
students engaged and
learning new skills.
Loved how you can
incorporate te reo and
other languages”
Basketball on Waiheke Island
Sport Auckland collaborated with Auckland
Basketball Services to provide quality basketball
opportunities for tamariki on Waiheke Island.
Following a locally led approach close to 300
tamariki from Waiheke Primary and Te Huruhi
School participated in classroom sessions lead by
ABS coaches. Following this an afterschool 3v3
league was run at the Waiheke Recreation Centre
open to tamariki from Year 5 - 8. The afterschool
league ran for 4 weeks with sessions attended by
more than 50 tamariki each week.
Waiheke have evident barriers to participation,
located 21km away from Auckland CBD. Auckland
Basketball Services are taking action to support
the sustainability of basketball on the island,
Including developing coaches and volunteers.
Visit www.absl.co.nz to learn more.
“Thank you so much for the
basketball programme you
ran for us at Te Huruhi
and the 3 on 3 training
at the rec centre. All the
students loved it and your
coaches Lily and Anthony
were great with the kids”
Green Prescription
Green Prescription
In Health & Wellness, the team are embracing
being back in the community and have several
Green Prescription (GRx) events planned for the
coming months.
Cook’n Kiwi
Working alongside the Ministry of Health funded
programme Cook’n Kiwi, we provide support and
advice to the community about healthy eating on
a budget.
Eating well for less is always a popular topic
of conversation amongst our participants. We
receive several requests on how to save on their
grocery bill without compromising their health.
Our suggestion is simple, attend our Cook’n Kiwi
workshop and discover opportunities to learn
cooking skills and new recipes the whole family
can enjoy.
Attending our two hour workshops will provide
tips, resources, recipes and satisfied tastebuds!
Active Whānau back in action!
After sitting on the sidelines due to Covid-19
restrictions, we are excited to be returning
our Active Families initiative to Point England
School in term 3.
Our sessions at Point England School will
run every Monday, and we welcome children
from neighbouring schools to attend. Joining
our Active Families programme is easy, you
complete our self-referral form and simply turn
up to a session and get started on the day.
Our Health and Wellness team look forward
to hosting an Active Families event during the
school holidays with the team at the Ellerslie
YMCA for all children on our programme aged
5-12 years. We’re encouraging all whānau with
school-aged children who would like support
to become more active and make healthy
lifestyle changes to attend this free event on
Wednesday 20th July (4-5.30pm).
rangitoto walk
Our Health & Wellness team started July on a
high with a walk to the summit of Rangitoto, a
Green Prescription (GRx) initiative in partnership
with Fullers360 and the Department of
Conservation (DOC). Our walking group included
GRx participants from all over central and south
Auckland.
“I had an awesome time! lot
of care and love from the
group. One of my beautiful
experience in life!”
The walk, which took place on Friday 1 July
marked the sixth walk led by the Health &
Wellness team. A group of approximately 40
joined us on the gradual 3km climb to the summit.
For many of our walkers, it was the first time
visiting Rangitoto. Friendships were formed and
reaching the top was a significant feat for many.
We are planning more GRx and Active Families
walks over the coming months and
encourage friends and whānau to join us for
those hikois.
Most walks will take place on Saturday mornings
and as we approach the summer months, we’ll
organise evening maunga walks as well.
Most of our GRx programmes and exercise
sessions take place indoors; at fitness and
community centres. Opportunities to get together
and enjoy being active in nature offers even more
health benefits from boosting mood and cognitive
function to improving energy and sleep.
SECTOR SUPPORT
Sport Auckland supports our community to
provide quality play, sport and active recreation
experiences. Recently we held two forums for the
community to upskill in areas that support these
quality experiences.
Encouraging Club Inclusivity
In collaboration with Ellerslie Cricket Club
& the Halberg Foundation, Sport Auckland
hosted a webinar designed to provide clubs
with easy practical take outs that will assist
them in providing a welcoming and inclusive
environment.
Visit our website for the full discussion.
“Next year we will have a
young man, 10 years of age
playing club cricket with
friends.”
New Information for Incorporated Societies
Sport Auckland hosted a webinar aimed at
providing clubs and community groups with
relevant information and practical actions they
could take to meet their obligations under the
new Incorporated Societies Act 2022. Presented
by Craig Fisher, an expert in governance, audit
and assurance advice.
“The Incorporated
Societies Act 1908 is
uncomfortably old and has
been little amended since
its enactment.“
Visit our website for the discussion on:
• Why there is a change
• Main thrust of the changes
• Possible practical implications of the changes
• What your club needs to do
