This has beenenabled by an integrated global supplychain that has grown and evolved tobecome highly optimised, transportingmassive volumes of freight efficiently andcost-effectively. However, the initialimpact of the pandemic led to a rapiddecline and change in volumes,disrupting regular routes and sailings,and displacing vessels and shippingcontainers. These supply chain issuesassociated with the pandemic – hot onthe heels of HSE deviations and dataintegrity scandals in China a few yearsback – mean that the ‘Made in the West’label has never been more valued. Thishas led to many companies in Europe reshoringtheir businesses from Asia andlooking for chemical manufacturers closerto home.This could be a great opportunity forthe UK chemical industry. For example,ready to meet the demand arising fromopportunities such as these in theEuropean landscape, 2M acquired amanufacturing site in Milton Keyneswhich has been integrated into theirexisting network. Not only has thismaintained the UK production of betainesand other products, it has also led tofurther employment opportunities andupskilling of existing employees throughthe creation of an innovation hub. Afurther benefit is that, by creating aNorthern and Southern Hub within theirnetwork, they are able to service theircustomers from sites local to them and, asa result, 2M has further reduced itsCarbon footprint.Similarly, longstanding CBA memberAlcohols Limited has made a multi-millionpoundinvestment to construct a newpurpose-built facility at Rugby,Warwickshire. This will consolidate thecompany’s existing operations and allowfor further expansion, while at the sametime converting its Oldbury site to supportinnovation along with an interactivevisitor centre.Another CBA member, ClydebridgeChemicals, has significantly enlarged itsoperations increasing their solventhandling capacity by 75% andextending its facilities by 33%, with futureplans to further extend its externalracking.
