A NEW KWEENIS CROWNED IN ASTORIAhis eye open for a venuefor over a year, until oneday he noticed that thespace formerly occupiedby Viva Viva had becomeavailable. The venue ismeaningful trinketsalong the bar and even aportrait of Alvarado’s dog,dressed as royalty.There’s been a newKween in town, ever sincethe gay bar and loungeon 30th Avenue in Astoriahad its grand opening onJune 10. It’s embellishedwith interesting artwork,crowns everywhere andeven a pink throne thathas already become amedia.But the most importantthing, according toowner Pedro Alvarado,is creating a positiveenvironment whereeveryone feels celebrated,and that’s what inspiredthe name Kween.“When you motivate orrecognize somethingabout someone, ifsomeone tells you theygot a new job, it’s like,‘Yasss, kween!’ It’s verymotivating to people,and I want to put that ineverybody’s life, like, ‘Yes,you can do it. Yes, youcan make the Americandream–pursue it and makeit happen’,” Alvarado said.Opening his own bar wasalways Alvarado’s dream.Originally hailing fromVenezuela, he movedto Astoria and built uptons of experience byworking in hospitality forover 20 years in venuesaround the city, includingAstoria’s two other gaybars, Icon and Albatross.He spent the time learningevery aspect of theindustry, from bartender tomanager, and continuallyset money aside for hisdream bar. Alvarado kept“It’s been designed in mymind for 10 years now,”Alvarado said. “My goalwas to make it as niceas possible and at thesame time, for artists tocome and do whateverperformances they want.If they want to do theirpoetry, drag king, dragqueen, whatever youwant to do and expressyourself, this is the spacefor it.”Kween had its softopening on May 16 andAlvarado said there wasan outpour of support.They now offer DragBrunch on Saturdays andSundays–two seatings,with shows at 1PM and3:30PM, with a companyof different drag artistsevery weekend. “We arewelcoming to all who wantto come and show theirtalent and the chanceto be part of the Kweenfamily,” Alvarado beamed.
