WOOLSTON ROVERS 10 HEWORTH 28
NCL 23/07/2022
Woolston Rovers put in a sterling display against run away league leaders Heworth but three late
tries saw the visitors claim the win in a hard fought National Conference League Division Two
fixture at the Limestone Construction Field, Monks Sports Club.
Heworth opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute when scrum half Liam Jackson dummied
his way through the Rovers defence to score on the right. Stand off Danny Allan converted and
then nine minutes later a long ball out wide found winger Adam dent in space to score in the right
corner. Allan landed a fine touchline conversion.
Two minutes before the break Rovers got themselves back into the game when substitute Josh
Sudlow managed to slip the ball out in the tackle superbly to find hooker Adam Files who scored
under the posts. Full back Aaron Barber converted to make the half time score 12-6 in Heworth’s
favour.
Twelve minutes into the second half some slick handling by Rovers saw the ball moved across
the pitch to reach centre Kieran Moore who scored wide out on the right to narrow the gap top just
two points and then on the hour Heworth were temporarily reduced to twelve men when second
row Leon Watkinson was sin binned for dissent but five minutes later, despite having a numerical
disadvantage, the visitor’s managed to move clear once again as substitute Ben Barnard spotted
a gap in the Rovers defence to score. Allan added the conversion.
Almost immediately the visitors were over once again when winger Billy Sturdy broke clear to
score under the posts. Allan converted and then Rovers had loose forward Ryan Brown sent off
for throwing a punch, whilst Watkinson was given a yellow card for the second time for striking
and then a couple of minutes later Heworth centre George Elliott and Rovers substitute Alex Smith
were yellow carded after a brief altercation.
Heworth rounded off the win with a Sturdy touchdown in the final minute to complete a 28-10
victory that sees them open up a seven point lead at the top of the table.
Best for Rovers were prop forwards Ryan Hickman and Harry Files along with substitute Scott
Whiteley.
