The Indiana Regional Economic
Acceleration and Development
Initiative (READI)
funding has been earmarked
to support the continuation
of the Ivy Tech Dual Credit
and Dual Enrollment scholarship
program, along with the
construction of a new welding
lab on-site at Batesville High
School.
The funds will help create
a scholarship endowment
and allow for the dual credit/
dual enrollment program to
continue. With the support of
the city, $500,000 has been
awarded through READI
funding, with the additional
$500,000 to be secured by the
Batesville Community School
Corporation (BCSC).
The BCSC provides families
and students with significant
savings in college/
certification tuition costs. In
2022, eighty seniors earned
a degree and/or certifications
equalling over 2,892.5 credit
hours through the dual credit/
dual enrollment partnership.
This year, the Ivy Tech
partnership has saved BCSC
families over $890,890 in
tuition costs.
The demand for certified
welders in southeastern Indiana
is strong. Over fifty new
positions for welders, cutters,
solderers, and brazers are
available annually throughout
the region with almost two
thousand new openings in the

Commission is

Schools in their efforts to
create a welding program for
its students. One of the goals
of the RDC is workforce
development, and a welding
program offered within Batesville
High School will help
fill a need for many of our

Ivy Tech Community College
and Batesville Community
School Corporation are
working together to create a
high school welding program.
Upon completion, students
will be prepared to meet the
growing demand for these
quality occupations, supporting
regional businesses, and
creating opportunities for the
expansion of manufacturingrelated
enterprises in the

host site.
Locally, a new array of vibrant
colors are featured in the
return of the Umbrella Sky.
Our community appreciates

for artistic education,
expression, and enjoyment in
Batesville and the surrounding

Batesville has lost a woman
of vision …
The community mourns
the loss of Sylvia “Jean”
Struewing, a wife, mother of
six, grandmother of twelve,
great-grandmother of four
… and among other accomplishments,
the founder of
the Batesville Area Historical
Society. Jean and her supportive
husband, Ham, were
passionate about preserving
the beauty of this area.
Jean authored a book about
Batesville’s history and was
honored as one of Batesville’s
Volunteers of the Year. Jean
passed in July – and through
her efforts in establishing the
Batesville Historical Center,
her legacy shall live on.

St John’s Parish recently
held a festival, part of All
Saints Parish in Dover. Entertainment
on Saturday night
was provided by a local band
that was put together back in
2013 by Kent and Doug Hiltz.
If you don’t already know they
play a combination of country
and rock. They are very thankful
for their following over the
past nine years. I always enjoy
them but I am a little prejudiced
since the lead singer is
my nephew. Raffles and games
were held on that evening,
along with plenty of refreshments.
The following Sunday,
a delicious chicken dinner was
held. The chicken fryers were
trained only by the best, Katy
Gaynor’s husband John and
brother-in-law Jake Gaynor.
John organizes the fryers for
the festival with his brother
Ron Gaynor of Dover. This
group makes chicken dinners
possible for this parish. These
entrepreneurs are a dying
breed. Hope the next generation
takes notice and keeps the
tradition going.

When you visit The District
in downtown Harrison you
will see some great people
hanging from the light posts!
Each year Harrison honors
our Harrison Hometown
Heroes. These are our
current military members
and Veterans. We honor this
deserving group by hanging
banners up with their name,
picture, and years of service.
The banners stay up for
twelve months and then a new
group goes up to be honored.
The military members that
are chosen are nominated by
family and friends.

As the school year ramps
up, don’t forget Picture Day

Festival games included the
Basket Raffle, which entailed
forty-five baskets of wonderful
prizes for all ages. Fresh produce
was for sale in the country
store which was provided
by parish members’ gardens.
Despite the rain on Sunday,
a steady crowd enjoyed the
chicken. They sold out earlier
than anticipated, so it must
have been good because we
got there too late to get ours.
My advice for these dinners
is to come early so you don’t
miss out on the scrumptious
Indiana chicken. The crowd
stayed for games and raffles
throughout the rain. Thank
goodness for the tents!

very well along with her sisters
in convincing grandma that
they needed more money to
play those games. What else

School is back in session.
