Mick and Paddy sneak onto the
racetrack in the middle of the night
with their brand spankin new bikes
and hare off at top speed for a few
laps.
As happens the racing starts and
pretty soon they are banging bars
through the corners.
Of course - it all goes pear shaped
when Paddy goes flying off the bike
into the night and bashes himself
up.
Mick hops off and dials emergency.
Where is the accident sir?
On Eucalyptus corner at the
Gumtree race track.
“Ok Sir” comes the reply. “ We know
where Gumtree is, but could you
please spell Eucalyptus for us to be
sure to be sure”.
There is dead silence on the end of
the line.
“Sir? SIR?...”
Eventually Mick comes back on.
“OK I’ve managed to move him to
OAK...”
Have a great riding month!
KTM 450 SMR: 2023 model unveiled
When it comes to race-spec, track-only supermotos they
don’t come more potent than KTM’s 450 SMR – nor more
advanced than this brand new 2023 version, unveiled
last month by the Austrian brand.
While racing supermotos cover many capacities and
street-legal versions, such as KTM’s own 690 SMC-R
can boast up to 700cc, the premier world championship
racing class is for 450cc ‘S1’ bikes.
The 450 SMR (Super Moto Racing) is KTM’s stand-out
performer and is a multiple world championship winner.
And now there’s a new one.
For starters, the 63bhp SOHC single has been tilted two
degrees further back for better mass centralisation, and
is housed in a new hydro-formed and laser-cut frame
with a revised shock position.
The riding position has also been tweaked, with the
footpegs moved inwards for better ground clearance,
and there’s a new handlebar pad.
There’s also tweaked bodywork to match the revised
riding position, aiming to give improved knee grip.
What’s more, the revised graphics cast a nod to KTM’s
early 1990s designs with a flash of purple added to the
traditional orange and white.
Suspension, as with all KTMs, is by WP and comprises
massive 48mm forks, with a lighter rear shock. There’s
also two engine maps, switched via a button on the left
bar, adjustable traction and launch control, and a topspec
radially-mounted four-piston Brembo brake caliper
biting onto a monster 310mm single front disc.
New Dakar-inspired 400cc GasGas prototype
spied…
GasGas have their sights set on the low-capacity
rally raiding top spot, developing a new road-legal
Dakar-inspired 400cc single. It’s apparent that the new
machine is inspired by the desert racer on which Brit
Sam Sunderland won this year’s Dakar Rally. It’s also the
firm’s first new road-legal adventure bike. The new bike
is expected to enter production in 2024 and could form
the basis of other capacity versions ranging from 125
to 700cc.
Spanish brand GasGas started life in 1985 specialising
in trials and enduro machines. Jordi Tarres then Adam
Raga won the world trails championships in 1993-1995
and 2005-2006 respectively while British rider Paul Edmondson,
most recently seen doing the stunt riding in
Bond flick No Time To Die, won the 125cc enduro world
title in 1994 then took the 250cc class win in 1996, too.
Motomate Rivonia:
Motomate Rivonia in the Rivonia Crossing
shopping centre just of Witkoppen road is quite a
shop. It looks small from the outside – but when
you walk in… it’s massive with a huge section
dedicated to road – and separate store just for
the dirt bike crowd. They stock a huge amount
of clobber – all of the popular brands from
service items, to tyres, sprockets, chains, rider
gear helmets, goggles… Go and see for yourself.
There’s a lot.
Upstairs, there’s a clearance store with some of
the older stock severelly marked down. Nothing
wrong with any of it – maybe just last years
colours or styling.
And this month, they celebrate their 9th year in
the trade and tell us that there will be loads of
specials through the month. Pop in and say hello.
www.facebook.com/motom8 sales@motomate.
co.za (011) 234-5274/5
Since then, however, GasGas has struggled. They were
taken over in 2015 and finally sold to Pierer/KTM twoyears-ago.
That KTM link was a factor in Sunderland’s last-minute
GasGas Dakar ride and also, as with other ‘sister’ brand
Husqvarna, explains much of the new bike’s specification.
At its heart is an all-new – likely 399cc – liquid-cooled
single that’s being developed by KTM and has already
been spied in the new 390 Duke expected next year.
The 40bhp lump is also set to power an expected new
Husqvarna Norden 401.
All-new bodywork is inspired by Sunderland’s racer
complete with high, steeply-angled screen and, as is the
case with Husqvarna’s street models, expected to house
bespoke instruments.
Energica Experia electric tourer revealed at
2022 Mugello MotoGP and available to order
now:
You’ll remember that a while ago we tested the two Energica
models that are available in SA? Well now there’s
an Adventure bike.
Italian electric bike firm Energica has revealed a new
road-biased adventure bike called the Experia. The plugin
tourer made its world debut at the Mugello MotoGP.
Available to order, the Experia is an upright, luggage
laden packhorse that rolls on road-focussed 17in rims,
with a carrying capacity of 112 litres with all three
boxes attached.
Said to be the first of a range of models in a new Energica
Green Tourer program, it also produces a claimed
circa 101bhp at 7500rpm and is limited to 112mph –
with no gear changes required to get there.
Although slightly down on petrol-powered competition
it gets a healthy claimed torque figure of 85ftlb at the
wheel. It’s also stuffed with six-stage traction control,
four riding modes, lean-sensitive Bosch ABS and more.
“We melded high-tech electric mobility with the roaming
spirit of the motorcycle traveller,” Chief Technical
Officer, Giampiero Testoni said in a statement. “The
intention was to create the first electric motorcycle
specifically for long-distance bike lovers.”
Powering the Experia is an all-new motor and battery
combination, with Energica claiming to have increased
battery capacity whilst reducing weight. The bike is
also said to be more centralised, with a lower centre of
gravity for greater control at low speed.
This battery capacity now stands at a maximum of
22.5kWh, which Energica say is the largest of all on any
electric motorcycle. It can also be charged from 0-80%
at a Level 3/DC Fast Charger in 40 minutes at a top rate
of 24kW, with the option to also use conventional 240V
and 120V plug-in points for longer stops or overnight
charging.
Once juiced and ready to go, the motorcycle is propelled
forwards by a new permanent magnet motor, positioned
lower in the bike than on other Energica models. It’s
also counter-rotating to reduce inertia – a system also
used in topflight superbikes to keep the front of the bike
planted on the tarmac under acceleration.
But just how far can you go on a full charge? Well, Energica
are claiming 240KM’s, or 420 kilometres in urban
areas. That’s not bad at all, but longer stops and charge
points will need to be factored into every tour, which
could be fun in SA.
Those interested in owning an Experia: The first Launch
Editions sold with hard panniers and a top case. There
will also be bar ends and bolts finished in back, plus
heated grips and aluminium rims complete with red
detailing.
All bikes will also get two USB ports in the dash, plus
two more in a waterproof lockable storage compartment.
It is said that the accessories list will grow over
time, too.
Portable convenience.
A few - as in lots of issues
ago, we did a little feature
on the original, entry
not call that a pressure
a rechargeable portable
spray solution to rinse your
Version 2, the 4.0 AH
version has just been
delivered to our offices and
it has been significantly
upgraded and this one
gives a lot more pressure.
It’s not quite as strong as
a pressure washer - but
it is stronger than your
traditional hosepipe with a
spray fitting.
The versatility is what
makes it attractive
because it does not need
a hose or tap - or power
source.
Just a bucket of water, or
your local dam, river or
swimming pool. It sucks
the water up, and forces
it out. The spray head
has lots of settings, from
a rinse cycle / water the
garden to - well almost
pressure washer pressure
to knock the mud off your
bike or boots.
It’s very cool! Very portable
for camping, or use in the
garden and for when you
race a muddy moto or
The first pair of TCX motorcycle boots were launched
back in 1999, when the company/brand was still
known as OXTAR boots.
Back then, the Treviso-based technical footwear manufacturer
patented its Torsion Control System (TCS®),
which protects the ankle from possible trauma by
allowing the controlled movement of the foot along
the longitudinal and lateral axis.
OXTAR enjoyed immediate success as it became a
leader in its sector in Italy before eventually expanding
and consolidating international distribution
throughout Europe and other overseas countries.
The re-branding to TCX happened in 2007, when
OXTAR was acquired by Novation S.p.A, a highly regarded
global company providing technical expertise
to many of the world’s top athletic footwear brands.
Despite the new identity, TCX continued to become
the leading brand of motorcycle boots in Europe, with
a renewed emphasis on the technical aspects of the
full line of products, which have set industry standards
for innovation, quality and protection.
In September of 2020, TCX was acquired by Italian
motorcycle gear maker Dainese. That is one company
that needs no introduction to any self respecting
motorcyclist.
“Improving safety in dynamic sports has always been
the Dainese
mission,” said Cristiano Silei, CEO of the Dainese
Group.
With its acquisition, the Dainese Group went one
step closer from its goal of providing riders with
motorcycle gear from head to toe, as it already has
AGV helmets and the Dainese motorcycle gear brands
under its umbrella.
“We are committing to ongoing research into innovative
systems that protect athletes from head to
toe. We are extremely proud of this operation. TCX
shares with Dainese the passion for product and adds
technical and development skills that are fundamental
in motorbike footwear. ” Silei added.
With safety in mind, TCX became the first company in
its sector to introduce the CE Certification (issued at
European level by independent bodies) on all products
as a proof of the brand’s passing of strict safety
standards.
TCX continues to offer a wide range of motorcycle
boots in the market, ranging from road racing, offroad,
touring, and leisure riding footwear.
TCX Boots are imported and distributed by Henderson
Racing Products and are available at most good
dealers.
HONDA CELEBRATES
50 YEARS OF
MOTOCROSS LEGENDS
The 23YM CRF450R marks 50 years since the arrival of Honda’s first moto
crosser intended for all riders, not only racing teams. The five decades since
have been marked by a number of technological leaps that have made the
letters ‘CR’ and then ‘CRF’ synonymous with off-road performance. Here is a
look back at just some of those major landmarks.
1973: CR250M Elsinore
Win on Sunday, sell on Monday! The CR250M Elsinore was a product of growing motocross competition,
(and sales demand), in the USA and Europe. It was Honda’s first built-from-scratch, two-stroke production
MX machine and met with instant success, thanks to its user-friendliness, high build quality and reliability.
Promotional activities for the new bike included a much-loved advertising film featuring Steve McQueen.
Named after the legendary Elsinore Grand Prix, (held by Lake Elsinore, California), the air-cooled 247.8cc
engine propelled 104kg while the chassis comprised a semi-double tubular steel frame, telescopic forks,
steel swingarm, twin rear shocks and drum brakes front and rear. Honda’s MX journey had begun…
1981: CR250R Liquid-cooling and Pro-Link arrive.
A big year for development. The CR250M had an earned its racing ‘R’ in the late ‘70s, and in 1981 Honda
unleashed their factory-bike technology to the buying public with the first production, liquid-cooled machine.
The engine was a long-stroke design cooled by two small radiators. Perhaps more telling is the chassis; the
aluminium swingarm and single, remote-reservoir Pro-Link rear shock pointed to the future, complementing
the known quantities of steel frame and double-leading shoe drum brake. Only one year later in 1982, Honda’s
Racing Service Centre was reborn as the Honda Racing Corporation. HRC soon became synonymous with
motocross racing success.

1985: CR500R
The ‘golden era’ of 500s. Originally launched in 1984 in an
air-cooled form, (with over 70Nm torque on tap), the CR500R
was water-cooled in 1985. Now very much a bike of myth and
legend, it perhaps defined the motocross heydays of the 1980s
with an aesthetic that has inspired the 2023 CRF450R 50th
Anniversary model. It tested the limits of chassis technology
and most riders’ ability to the very limit. If you have ever ridden
one, you’ll understand.
1997: CR250R
The revolution begins. To make use of the advancements
in engine technology and consequent increases in power
and torque, Honda took the bold step of producing the first
aluminium frame for a production MX bike. Tubular steel’s
rigidity was replaced by twin-spar flexibility and other parts
combined for a more high tech feel, like fully adjustable Showa
suspension and disc brakes front and rear. Recognised as one
of the most influential machines of the ‘90s, the CR250R started
an off-road revolution that can still be seen in the MX bikes of
today.
2002: CRF450R
Open-class power in a 250-sized package: Honda kicked off
a new MX mission with its first generation of 450, the first
four-stroke and a direct replacement for the CR250R. And with
its 250-based chassis, it was slim and lightweight. The 449cc
engine was powerful, smooth and with a wide powerband which
made it no less potent, but much less intimidating, than a
comparable 250cc two-stroke engine. The CRF450R made going
faster, easier.
2009: CRF450R
An injection of technology: After steady evolution the CRF450R
was reborn with a fuel-injected engine with a 50mm throttle
body and 12-hole injector. Owners were also able to make
adjustments to fuel delivery and ignition timing via an HRC
PGM-FI setting tool. The engine redesign and new chassis were
built together with a focus on mass centralisation, making for a
compact machine carrying its weight more forward and lower.
Suspension was by Kayaba: 48mm Air-Oil-Separated (AOS) USD
forks and compact rear shock.
2017: CRF450R
All-new and made for the hole shot: Under the concept of
‘ABSOLUTE HOLESHOT!’ The open-class MX machine was given
a ground-up redesign, with completely new chassis, full Showa
suspension and a major top end power boost from a brand-new
engine. Standard-fit electric start was a convenient addition a
year later and in 2019 an HRC-developed cylinder head upped
power and torque considerably; HRC launch control was also
added. In 2020 3-level Honda Selectable Torque Control, (HSTC),
gave the rider options to manage rear wheel traction.
2022: CRF450R 50th Anniversary
Success builds success, and celebration: In 2021, aside
from the wheels and fundamental engine architecture, the
CRF450R was effectively a totally new bike, drawing heavily on
developments from the 2019 MX GP championship-winning
CRF450RW of Tim Gajser. He and HRC secured the title for a
second year in 2020 and finished a close third in 2021. As ever
with motocross, and the CRF450R, the game moves on and the
latest machine is armed with a host of factory rider led and HRC
updates to engine and chassis aimed at making going fast -
really fast - that much easier.

2023 marks 50 years since the bike that started it all, the
CR250M Elsinore. The CRF450R 50th Anniversary limited edition
pays stunning homage to the mighty CRs of the 1980s and, true
to Honda’s roots in the sport and to the blueprint laid down all
those years ago remains an HRC-bred racer that it is possible
to buy.

2023 Honda Dirt bike News:
50th Anniversary Edition version honours 1980s CR models
CRF450R and RX receive significant engine and chassis updates for 2023,
Honda also offers a 50th Anniversary Edition of the model, featuring a
livery reminiscent of the legendary ‘80s CRs that ruled AMA Motocross and
Supercross. Easily recognizable to fans of that era, this version features a
blue seat cover, white number plates, gold rims, gold handlebar, graymetallic
triple clamp and special graphics.
Celebrating five decades of elite motocross heritage, Honda has unveiled
the latest edition of its flagship motocross bike, the 2023 CRF450R.
Held on the eve of the opening 2023 AMA Pro Motocross round at Fox
Raceway, the function featured the entire Team Honda HRC line-up: Ken
Roczen, Chase Sexton, Hunter Lawrence and Jett Lawrence as well as
Honda legends from the past, including champions Gary Jones, Johnny
O’Mara, Rick Johnson and Trey Canard, as well as former Team Manager
Dave Arnold.
Introduced 50 years after the debut of the 1973 CR250M Elsinore,
Honda’s original motocross machine, the 2023 CRF450R gets key
engine updates and chassis revisions targeted at enhancing cornerexit
acceleration and improving handling. “Honda is synonymous with
motocross, and that’s a direct result of our dedication to the sport for
the past five decades, as well as the invaluable contributions of top
riders, from Gary Jones in 1973 to Jett Lawrence in 2022,”.
“The 2023 CRF450R is worthy of that heritage, and the 50th
Anniversary Edition pays tribute in a way that we’re sure will be
appreciated by motocross enthusiasts. We look forward to current and
future Honda champions continuing to grow our motocross legacy.”
For 2023, The CRF450R’s engine and chassis updates carry over to the
off-road-focused CRF450RX.
CRF450R
The CRF450R’s technical updates include a narrower intake-port
shape and longer intake funnel, revised cam profile and smaller
throttle body diameter, resulting in smooth power delivery and
increased torque, improving acceleration out of corners. The frame’s
rigidity has been optimized by increasing material thickness in
strategic locations and the use of steel engine mounts, (replacing
aluminium), helps improve front-end traction. A higher-rate shock
spring and revised fork settings complement the rigidity-optimized
frame without introducing harshness. To enhance strength and
reduce noise, the muffler body is constructed from heat-treated
aluminium, and a new inner-pipe design is used.
CRF450RX
To improve corner-exit acceleration and handling, this model
receives the same chassis and engine updates as its motocrossfocused
relative, the CRF450R. Built with off-road specific features
like dedicated ECU and suspension settings, an 18-inch rear
wheel, an aluminium side stand, a large 7.95lt fuel tank and hand
guards, the championship-proven CRF450RX is ready for the track
or trail, which is why it’s the motorcycle of choice for a variety of
off-road racers, including the SLR Honda and JCR Honda teams.
CRF250R
The CRF250R has accumulated an enviable list of championships
over the years, and it’s consistently among the top sellers in its
class. Noted for its exceptional handling, (thanks in part to a
narrow layout and low weight), excellent acceleration, (achieved
through notable torque and low-to midrange power), and
endurance over race distance.
CRF250RX
Now in its second generation, the CRF250RX is an excellent
choice for off-road racers. The model is based on the
motocross focused CRF250R but tailored for woods racing, offroad
grand prix competition, desert racing and trail riding.

# 11 – CHECK !
A two week trip around South Africa.
The 26th March 2022, at the age of 56, a lifelong
dream began to materialise, a dream that I had before
I was 24, which is my son’s age, who I was privileged
enough to have accompany me on this journey. Byron,
thank you for taking the time to join your old man on
this epic 2 week motorcycle trip around South Africa.
Proper planning, and by that I mean consulting maps,
investigating places to stay etc, probably started mid-
January, with the all-important fold up paper map (yes,
those from the 70s and 80s) spread out on the dining
room table. When it coms to planning a trip like this,
use a paper map to identify routes and just consult the
trusted iPhone GPS for actual distances and travelling
times between towns or places of interest.
A combination of the two resulted in us having a very
clear picture of what lay ahead, before D Day.
I did splash out on a Garmin Zumo396 GPS, but my
rationale was that at my age it should last me a
lifetime. Each of the daily routes were programmed
ahead of time in the Trip Planner feature, so each
morning I just clicked on that day’s route and away we
went. There would be nothing wrong with a handlebar
mounted cell phone for the GPS though, as long as
you have access to a 12V charging port. I am by no
means mechanically inclined, but found myself, 3
weeks before the trip, with fairings off and a headlight
cluster to one side, with me trying to find the elusive
ACC002 to which I knew I needed to connect the GPS
charging wire, in order to ensure that power was only
being drawn when the ignition was on. After an hour or
three and a quick test ride, I was suitably chuffed that
I had managed to get the Garmin properly connected,
without damaging anything or blowing any fuses.
My attention then turned to what equipment, apart
from normal day to day clothing and riding gear,
would be required on such a trip. Being a novice at
this, it would be very easy to try and cater for EVERY
eventuality, but I soon realised that this was not
possible – there is no way I was going to carry spare
tyres, so a tyre repair kit and a Desert Fox compressor
(the connector cables also masterfully being
connected directly onto the battery terminals).
The Red OX in Upington
I invested in a cheap handlebar pouch in order to
ensure easy access to the petrol card for the pesky
tollgates and a Tool Tube mounted inside the luggage
framework took care of basic tools and, unexplainedly,
ensured a certain level of comfort just knowing they
were there.
When I purchased my 2014 KTM 1190R two years
ago, I also invested in some soft luggage. After much
research, I opted for Rigg Gear, which I obtained from
the very helpful guys at Guts n Gas. Saddlebags and a
38 litre (I think) Duffel Bag, provided more than enough
packing space for a two week trip. Super strong and
100% waterproof, as was tested for a solid 4 hours in
the heavy rain on the last day of the trip.

Father and Son Kevin and Byron
Byron had an aluminium top box and I must
say that, although I am not a fan, it was very
handy having it available for easy access to
the all-important (good quality) rain suits, as
well as the flask of hot water and Eet Sum Mor
shortbread biscuits. An excellent tip, thanks
to my good Mate Russell, is to place instant
coffee, sugar and cremora in small Ziploc bags
and take those along with a flask of hot water,
as opposed to making a flask of coffee every
morning. Hot water you can get anywhere,
as I proved in a tiny little café in Springbok,
Northern Cape.
There’s nothing like a scenic roadside coffee in
the middle of nowhere, with just the sound of
the wind in the sunflowers for company.
Day 1: Edenvale to Zastron.
We left Edenvale and headed past
Vanderbijlpark to Kroonstad, then Steynsrus (a
number of roadworks resulted in great riding
on the many detours), Senekal, Marquard,
Clocolan, Ladybrand, Wepener and on to
Zastron – 610km for the day and a solid 5h45 in
the saddle. The roads on this last stretch were
absolutely disgusting and, even on Adventure
bikes, the huge and numerous potholes had us
travelling at 35kph at times. Definitely don’t try
these roads in a car. A very pleasant evening
was spent on Tienfontein Farm, roughly half
way between Zastron and Rouxville.
Day 2: Zastron to Cannon Rocks.
A fresh early morning start saw us heading
to Rouxville, then on to the N6 towards Aliwal
North, Queenstown, Stutterheim and around the
outskirts of East London down to Port Alfred
for a quick pizza on the beach front, Kenton on
Sea and into Cannon Rocks, where we would
be spending the night at Oh Hello, an excellent
little B&B where you step off the veranda directly
onto the beach. We could easily have spent two
or three nights there. 605km for the day, around
5h30 of riding, on awesome, scenic roads.

Of particular interest was the start of the wind farms, some 60km from
Port Alfred. Man, those things are impressive!
Day 3: Cannon Rocks to Knysna.
A dodgy battery saw us making our first stop in Port Elizabeth to buy
a new one and, thanks to the guys at Battery Centre, we were soon on
our way again. Jeffrey’s Bay, then on to Storms River Bridge, Bloukrantz,
Plett and on to Knysna for the night.
On trips like this, always make sure you make use of big name petrol
stations, that have high volumes of turnover, to ensure as much as
possible that you don’t end up with dirty fuel going into your bikes. Also
pay attention to your fuel consumption, as some serious headwinds,
hour after hour, will make a significant difference to your consumption.
We experienced an increase of as much as 24% on a tank. Overnight
accommodation was at Paradise Heads – adequate, but Knysna has a
serious amount of awesome accommodation available. 431km for the
day, at around 4h20 in the saddle. Not much distance, but a very scenic
part of the country – a must do for any biker.
Day 4: Knysna to George.
Dirty fuel in Byron’s bike unfortunately meant that the smart decision
was to rather not tackle the Prince Alfred pass through to Uniondale.
A quick hop through to George and then the Montagu Pass, followed
by an unmarked gravel road all the way into Oudtshoorn (we never felt
the need to deflate tyres at all and it never had any negative influence
on handling). Make a point of visiting this part of the country so as
to tackle the Montagu and Swartberg Passes (we did the Swartberg
in 2021). The Outeniqua Pass back into George is also a must, with
awesome twisties and some breathtaking scenery. A gentle 238km
for the day, but some brilliant gravel road riding. We spent the night in
George with an old friend of mine, George. Thanks again George and
Karen for your very warm hospitality.
Day 5: George to Hermanus.
Mossel Bay, Swellendam and down to Cape Agulhas, the most
Southerly tip of Africa. The wind was such that it blew my fully loaded
bike over during a fuel stop in Bredasdorp. Riding in winds like that
makes it interesting, to say the least. Cape Agulhas back through
Bredasdorp, on to Napier, Caledon and into Hermanus for the night at
Sandbaai Woonstel.
443 very interesting kilometres for the day – I guess there is a good
reason why there are so many wind farms in that vicinity.
Day 6: Hermanus to Cape Town.
A short 164km for the day, but a very scenic one from Hermanus
to Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Rooi Els and Gordon’s Bay. This has to
be some of the best riding in the country. We arrived in Cape Town,
having covered 2 525km along some of South Africa’s most scenic
routes and was looking forward to spending a week with my Daughter,
Granddaughter and son-in-law, before heading home via the Northern
Cape. Being based in Cape Town for a few days, one has to do the likes
of the DuToitskloof Pass in Paarl, the Franschoek Pass and Chapman’s
Peak, to name but a few.
Day 7: Cape Town to Springbok.
We knew this day was not going to be one of the greatest from a
scenery point of view, but there was a reason for taking this route back,
which becomes known on day 8.
Malmesbury and Piketberg came and went and then we got into
Citrusdal, where the Cedarberg Wilderness Area began. A trip definitely
needs to be planned into the Cedarberg mountains – what a place.
Clanwilliam and Garies lead us into Springbok and the overnight stay at
Spergebiet Lodge, a small oasis in the middle of nowhere, about 10km
outside of town. 586 long kilometres in the saddle, at around 5h20
riding for the day.
Day 8: Springbok to Upington via Augrabies.
A breakfast at the Pofadder Inn was a welcome surprise for such a
small town and we were soon re-energised for the road through to the
Augrabies Falls National park. I’ve wanted to go there since 1983, when I
did basics at 8 SAI in Upington, and it most certainly didn’t disappoint !

Cycle Technology ccT/A
Overnight accommodation at Affinity Lodge, with a cold one and riverside
dinner to finish off a great day. 471km for the day and just over 4h30 in
the saddle.
Day 9 : Uppington to Vryburg.
Dark skies would make the 411km to Kameelboom Lodge in Vryburg an
interesting one, but we timed things just right and after 3h45, we checked
into the overnight accommodation without needing the rainsuits. Never
did I imagine spending my 57th birthday in Vryburg, with an early brannas
& coke and T-Bone, followed by watching the only thing on TV, Titanic, but
that’s what happened.
Day 10: Vryburg to Edenvale.
The last day of our journey was going to be a wet one and my decision
to stay off the N14, because of the combination of heavy rain and large
trucks, turned out to be the wrong one. We went via Schweiser-Reneke
and Wolmaransstad, which has to be one of the worst stretches of road in
the country. I’ve heard of people saying roads are like sand with patches
of tar, but stretches of this road is exactly that. The local municipalities
should be embarrassed, at least, and fired on the spot. The N12 to
Klerksdorp, Potch and then on to Parys, Vanderbijlpark and home, was
without any potholes to speak of, but the vast majority of the day’s 469km
and at least 4 hours of the day’s 4h40 ride, was in heavy rain. The Rigg
Gear performed perfectly, as did the Oxford Rainseal rainsuits.
Don’t skimp on these two items. The day eventually came to an end with
the total distance covered over the two weeks, at 4 865km, with a total
saddle time of 50h40.
All accommodation on the trip was booked through Lekkeslaap.co.za,
which I find to be the best platform for accuracy of accommodation
descriptions, as well as ease of booking, payment etc. Accommodation
cost an average of R800 per night for the two of us, but a lot of cheaper
options are available, should you want to keep a tighter rein on the
budget.
Fuel consumption varied depending on wind conditions but, overall, we
finished off around R1 per kilometre across the two bikes. Please bear in
mind that this was at Pre June fuel price hikes.
We learned many things on this trip, but probably the main thing was
to not hesitate – just get out there and do it. This is such a wonderful
country we live in, with so many places to see and so many interesting
people to meet.
Yes, I have the map out on the dining room table again and plans are well
under way on the next epic trip….
FOGLIO BIANCO
The Aprilia Tuareg 660
About a year ago, we did a story on the Aprilia RS 660 road bike in RideFast
Magazine. Back then we said that it would be quite something if Aprilia were
to fit that engine into an adventure bike. They have the tech and expertise,
you might remember the 1000 Capornord and before that, the Aprilia 650
Pegaso that was built in the same factory as BMW’s GS650, albeit on a
separate production line. Well, they listened.
It’s been a long time since Aprilia dabbled in this market, they must have a trend
department, because as the more traditional superbike market dwindles, the ADV
segment has remained quite solid. If the Tuareg is a sign of things to come, then
hopefully the motorcycle world is in for a few treats from this brand. Locally, stock
is very limited. Chatting to their marketing guys, lots were ordered and only a few
arrived. This is a theme with most importers at the moment. But… Luckily they did
turn one of the bikes into a demo so that customers can go and ride. If you are
interested in a mid-sized ADV then you absolutely should get down there for a
spin.
Amazingly, we were given the bike for four full days. We say amazingly, because
these days we are lucky to get a bike for anything longer than a day. Over those
four days, we racked up four hundred kilometers of tar and dirt. And by dirt, we
don’t mean just gravel roads. The secret to this bike is undoubtedly that sweet
parallel twin engine. It’s only a 660, but it produces torque and speed of a much
bigger machine. It’s a modified version of the engine in the RS 660 and Tuono
660 sportsbikes, and that engine is derived from the front cylinder bank of
the 1,099cc RSV4 superbike. The engine is tuned to supply a flatter, wider
powerband. It shares the 81mm bore from the RSV4 as well as the heads and
pistons from Aprilia’s proven World Superbike Championship engine. You need
to feel it to understand. They have given that mill four very simply actuated
rider modes, so you can make it as aggressive or as smooth as you like.
The electronic rider aids, which include cruise control as well as multiple
modes for throttle response, engine braking, ABS, and traction control.

There are presets in the four ride modes,
Urban, Explore, Off-road, and Individual and a
simple switch next to the right grip allows easy
scrolling between them.
Explore and Urban are street-focused ride
modes, with ABS activated at both wheels.
Explore offers more aggressive throttle
response and less traction control intervention
than Urban. Off Road provides the softest
power delivery and ABS can be disabled at the
rear wheel or switched off entirely. Individual
gives you the choice to set the bike up as you
wish and importantly, the bike remembers and
stores it all. The TFT dashboard where all of
this is displayed is clear and easy to read even
in the bright sunshine.
That engine is mated to a fairly big chassis.
But it’s not bulky. Its comfortable and well
thought out for riders of all sizes and it has a
bigger bike feel to it. Its tubular-steel frame
has cast swingarm plates, welded up as a
single unit with the rear subframe. The engine
is a stressed member of the frame with six
mounting points, creating a rigid chassis to
meet the demands of off-road riding. The
engine is rotated back by 10 degrees. The 21
inch and 18 inch tubeless wheels tell you that
they mean business. They are bolted on to fully
adjustable suspension by Kayaba, with 43mm
inverted forks and a piggyback rear shock with
a progressive linkage, and there’s 9.5 inches of
travel at both ends.
Ergonomically it’s great, we have a big cross
section of riders from Sean who is tall like a
giraffe, to Stefan who is one of the smallest
guys in town. Everyone fits and has nothing
but compliments about the comfort, standing
in the dirt or sitting on the freeways. And even
though the screen is not adjustable it does a
great job for a bike like this. It’s pretty too, just
have a look. The Italians do make beautiful
things.
They missed some tricks in our opinion.
There’s no sign of any kind of carrier or tie
down points. On an ADV bike? Maybe there
is one as an optional extra. We have seen
luggage options too, so chat to the boys at
Aprilia. Also, although it has rear pegs, there
is nowhere for a pillion to hold on to. They
have, however included a neat recess where
you can grab the rear frame if you need to
muscle the bike around. You have to pay extra
for the privilege of using the quick shifter
and the Bluetooth system for your phone.
They have taken cues from some of the other
European manufacturers.
For the rest, Aprilia really has delivered a
serious dose of fun to the Adventure market.
Road or dirt, the bike is quite simply brilliant.
The range seems good too, we rode the 60
KM’s odd from Aprilia Bryanston to our base,
filled her 18 and a bit liter tank and returned
her with 400 KM’s extra on the clock without
refueling. The average consumption we saw
according to the onboard system was 5 liters
per 100 KM’s.
Sean shares his thoughts:
Gooood Golly Miss Molly!!!!! Huffa… huffa…
huffa… I am having quite a bit of trouble
breathing right now. YES! This bike is that
good… but R265k for a 660? Smack me
sideways seven ways from Sunday, WTF is
happening to this world and the out of control
inflation? Just glancing through our buyers
guide there are a number of similarly or
even better priced options with bigger, more
powerful mills that are significantly better
kitted out as standard…. The Tuareg really has
to be something special to justify the ticket
price.

Ts&C
While I dumbly and numbly pick my jaw up
off the floor, I need to tell you that the all
new Aprilia 660 Tuareg is a phenomenal bike
in most respects and quite a revelation to
ride. That little 659cc mill is nothing short of
revolutionary, redlining somewhere around the
10k mark and blowing by most bigger capacity
bikes like they were standing still. My take
way from riding this bike is that it is 1000cc
performance packaged in a 660cc guise. But
that raises another question: That much strain
to produce that much delicious power, what
effect is that going to have on the longevity of
this little beauty?
In Urban mode, from idle to about 2,300rpm
the throttle response felt a bit lack luster to me
and then she suddenly comes alive and really
puts a grin on your face, somewhere around
6,500rpm another definite power boost comes
in and the Tuareg really gets going even faster.
I had to roll off at 203kmh when I ran out of
clear freeway to avoid ploughing into the back
of slow moving traffic… and that was running
up quite a serious and long uphill.
Let’s chat about the suspension. 43mm forks
upfront with 240mm travel front and rear and
they work and work very well with the tubular
chassis set up. At 115kg’s in my birthday
suit, I had no problems soaking up the bumps
and the ANC footprints in our roads and the
small section of dirt I did to avoid a beeeg
traffic snarl up I got a lot of feedback and
response from the suspension so much so
that I really gave it horns and did some dumb
stuff on a bike I had only just spent 15 minutes
in the saddle of. Not once did the machine
feel awkward, cumbersome or out of control
which I really appreciated considering I have
buggered up my left shoulder and have to have
it surgically repaired in the not too distant
future.
At this point I was almost forgiving and
possibly understanding of the price tag, still…
R265K for a 660cc?
The kicker for me is the Tuaregs ergonomics.
At 2 meters tall most bikes these days are
cramped, particularly the smaller capacity
bikes. My daily ride is an Africa Twin and I love
that bike for it space and comfort… especially
when I am standing up in the dirt. The Tuareg,
surprisingly for a 660cc is equally as spacious
and comfortable whether I was sitting on the
hard but comfortable saddle or standing up
and going balls to the wall in the dirt.
Wind protection is also surprisingly good, in
fact the aerodynamics were particularly good
all the way past the 200kmh mark.
In summary, we all really, really do like
this bike, 1000cc performance in a comfy,
lightweight, nimble package.
It is unique, brilliant, desirable and all things
Italian. You will, absolutely stand out from the
crowd.
Go ride one for yourself and make up your own
mind.
on the ‘Iron Giant’ with this year also doubling up as the third stop of the
2022 FIM Hard Enduro World Championship.
During the Friday and Saturday prologues, 1500 riders got two attempts
to qualify. Start positions were determined in time order with rows of
50 starting the main Hare Scramble from down in the very depths of the
quarry on the Sunday.
Rumour was that top riders would enjoy around two hours of riding the
course this year but the new sections, plus a long slog through Carl’s,
meant the race headed deep into a third hour – the longest it has ever
taken a winner. This was “The toughest ever” Erzberg according to
Mario Roman.

Mani takes the crown:
Mani Lettenbichler was a class act as he dominated one of the toughest-ever
Red Bull Erzbergrodeo events. Having finished third and second
in the previous two editions, Manuel Lettenbichler became the first son of
a Red Bull Hare Scramble winner to also win the toughest one-day race in
the with a brilliant performance.
Lettenbichler’s father, Andreas, was one of four winners in 2015 when the
riders were thwarted by a new section that took them into a deep, wet
ravine surrounded by trees. Known as “de Grüne Hölle” (Green Hell). That
event made a return this year as the Motorex Highway and the massive
obstacle nearly undid the five-minute lead Lettenbichler had built by the
22nd checkpoint. The Motorex Highway knocked Lettenbichler out of his
groove. Having ascended up a mountain stream, he was faced by a steep
climb up a near-vertical slope covered in slippery vegetation.
After four attempts, he created enough of a line up the slope to clear the
obstacle, but by the time he was going down the other side, Mario Roman
was already at the foot of the hill.
Following his rival’s line, the Spanish rider cleared the climb at the first
attempt and was hot on his heels.
“That nearly killed me,” said Lettenbichler at the finish line. “I was the first
guy to arrive and there was just no line. I had to try several lines and then
I pulled some logs out of the way, which made it a little bit easier for the
rest of the riders. But I was so done after that.”
This all set up a fantastic chase to the finish, as the Sherco rider pursued
the KTM man through the super tough Dynamite section. With Lettenbichler
looking stranded on a new climb, Roman drew up to the start of Dynamite
just 50 yards behind, but the German was able to clear the section,
put the hammer down and speed off to the final climb at Lazy Noon.
After 2h 58m 51s of racing, Lettenbichler crossed the finish line to take
a spectacular victory and his second consecutive win of the FIM Hard
Enduro World Championship season after victory at Xross Serbia.
Trystan Hart - Watch out boys!
“When I cleared Lazy Noon, I was like, ‘Oh man, how sick is this’. Literally,
the last push wasn’t too difficult and it was an unbelievable feeling. I’m
over the moon. It means so much that both my dad and I have won this
race. Not many people will do that.”
Roman takes the 2nd step.
With most of the field still trying to reach the first checkpoint at Wasserleittung
(Water Pipe), Mario Roman crossed the line a mere three minutes
behind Lettenbichler to take a brilliant second place. Clearly emotional,
the Spaniard dedicated the result to his grandfather, who had passed
away earlier in the week. Having won the opening race of the championship,
the Minus 400 in Israel, the Spaniard is squarely in the title race.
“I made a decent start, but there was a crazy amount of dust and I lost a
lot of positions, but then I reached the forest. I kept calm, ran at my own
pace and started to make up some places one-by-one. Second place was
the best I could manage this year. The race is getting harder and harder
every year. For sure, this was the hardest one yet. The toughest part is
that there were some surprises on the track. We walked the track on Saturday
and thought we knew every section, but there were several sections
I didn’t recognise.”
Trystan Hart the Big Surprise:
A big surprise to everyone was Trystan Hart. The Canadian endurocross
star, who’s leading the US hard enduro series. He is competing in four
races in the world championship this year. He produced an amazing run,
even recovering from a slip that dropped him to seventh on the run up to
Double Fault. Hart climbed back up to third through Carl’s Dinner, passing
our Wade Young, Billy Bolt and Freddy Gómez to take third place and
become the first Canadian on the podium at Red Bull Erzbergrodeo. An
astonishing achievement on his debut. Next year Hart is rumoured to be
racing the full season, watch out boys.

A Battered Billy Bolt:
2 South Africans out of 8 finishers
Billy Bolt crossed the line in fourth, having ridden through the pain barrier.
Nursing an injured right foot and left hand, the defending FIM Hard Enduro
world champion came into the weekend as joint leader of the championship
needing to minimize the damage to his campaign. He stuck with Lettenbichler
at the start before falling back and taking a heavy tumble in Carl’s Dinner.
He held off challenges from Gómez and Young, crossing the finish line – his
jersey in shreds – in fourth place to take vital points and retain the championship
lead.
Alfredo Gomez pips Michael Walkner:
Two-time winner Alfredo Gómez – who now heads up his own GasGas team
– came across the line in fifth place ahead of Michael Walkner. 20 year old
Walkner is the first and highest highest Austrian official finisher at the event.
He crossed the line to riotous and deserved applause from the home crowd. A
star is born.
South Africans Amaze:
Wade Young and Matthew Green, were the last of the finishers, Young nursing
what was left of his bike and its buckled wheel over the finish. The final kilometres
got the better of Wade Young’s bike after he was running in fourth. He
limped home in seventh just ahead of the final official finisher and compatriot
Matty Green in eighth.
What happened to Jarvis?:
After bike drowning problems right off the start, Graham started the race one
hour late. From 500th and last, he was inside the top 50 by checkpoint 13, by
Udo’s (CP18) he was top 30, after Carl’s he was top 20, the Motorex hill (CP22
of 27) was as far as Graham could manage, knocking on the door of a top 10
finish as the four-hour cut-off arrived.

Sadly, after organisers deemed him to have received outside assistance,
he was later disqualified. Had he started on time – who knows what
might have been?
This guy is absolutely a force to be reckoned with.
T7 Insanity:
Also impressive was Pol Torres, riding the Yamaha Téneré adventure bike.
CP 17, Stony Party is as far as he got. Sandra Gomez was the highest
places female rider this year. Her ride also ended at Stony Party.
The riders have just three weeks to put their bikes and bodies back
together ready before Round 4 of FIM Hard Enduro World Championship
Red Bull Abestone in Italy.
Fastis Fast…
A day out with the Sleepover Honda Tork Craft crew… but team owner and manager Harry Grobler roped in the talents of two
“Hey guys! You have seen that Honda is making waves of his other riders, Tyrone Beverly who competes in the 450 class and
the talented John Botha who has just moved up from 125’s to a 250.
in the off-road scene… How would you like to meet one
Both riders are on other brands for the 22 season, but the idea for the
of our teams and put the bikes through their paces.” team was to start preparation for next year already. That’s racing for
That was Honda South Africa. Calls were made to the you.
Sleepover Tork Craft Honda team and we met for a little Also present for this ride was Tork Crafts Gerhard Vorster who, they tell
us is the teams “Pit Poppie”. He’s a more social rider who is back after a
ride with the boys at the legends track out near Cullinan.
20 year break from riding… Cool huh!, He’s competing in all the more fun
club racing series. So… from our point it was cool to ride the Honda’s
The team had a very slick set up when we arrived. The bikes were
again and this time two race prepped machines. Previously we have only
gleaming in the cold winter sunshine. It’s refreshing to see such a professional
set up. The teams Durban Based Honda national riders Gareth
ridden the bikes in standard trim. But it was even more interesting to get
feedback from some very quick racers who got to ride this brand for the
and Hayden Cole could not make it to the day,
very first time… You have heard our views,

Honda builds some great bikes. Three bikes were present for
duty on the day, two CRF 450 RX’s and the CRF 250 RX. All the
bikes have been off-road race prepped. We chatted to Gerhard
about race prep.
No engine upgrades. For Enduro, guys tend to spend tin on lots
of protective gear, but for Off-road, the upgrades are minimal.
Standard brush flaps. Zeta foldable levers. Polisport Engine
guards. Aftermarket MSD brake levers with a brake snake. The
standard chains are replaced with DID O-Ring units and the
guys have done a bit of Renthal gearing on the bikes. Fast, Offroad
racing is not about rocks, so they have left the standard
Honda front brake guard in place, along with standard chain
guides. Tyre choice for the team are the Dunlop MX 33’s. “Great
all round tyre. Great grip.” An Akrapovic exhaust system is
fitted on the 450. Naturally, the standard Showa suspension on
both bikes is tweaked and set up for each rider.
Ride impressions.
Our guys took a lap of the Legends park loop and chopped and
changed bikes as we went along. The Honda’s are both, very
focused off roaders, light, nimble and very quick. We’ve always
appreciated the bikes agility and small feel.
The 450RX:
A simple handlebar-mounted button lets you dial in engine
power delivery character with a push of your thumb. Choose
between Standard, Smooth and Aggressive, depending on track
conditions. Choose the fastest of the three maps and the 450
can literally be like a hand grenade, point and fire and chances
are excellent that you’ll actually be slower in the tight stuff.
Why? You tap off sooner to negotiate the corners, this rider
spent half the time overtaking the turns trying to look fast. In
the tight stuff, it’s quicker and more forgiving in the intermediate
setting. So!... save ‘’ mode for desert race stuff, in tighter,
twisty stuff stick it in intermediate and you literally have a powerful
bike that does it all at the push of a button. Technology is
grand. There is nothing wrong with the standard Honda pipe,
but the Akrapovic, aside from shaving off some weight seems
to make the power delivery just that little bit better without
blowing your eardrums to pieces. And besides, they do make
pretty pipes. The Hydraulic clutch is among the softest in the
business and always a nice touch on a dirt bike. And… Well…
It’s a 450, so it’s bloody fast!
Here’s what Tyrone Beverly had to say a couple of laps in on his
first ride on the bike. Last year he was on a Husqvarna. This
year he is competing on the Kawasaki 450.
“The Honda feels quite rigid, but in a good way. The front end
is very direct and precise. It’s super good in the corners. The
rear end is nice and stable. Good holdup, it doesn’t feel like
you are blowing through. It’s got a lot of power and I love the
way it’s delivered. Plenty of midrange for short shifting, which
ultimately saves you energy. It took exactly five minutes to get
comfortable on the bike. I played with two of the power modes.
Fast is … FAST! Great for MX and so-on, but I’d choose the mid,
smoother, mellower setting for what we do…”
The 250RX: Less is more.
This has become one of this here magazines favorite 250 four
strokes, simply because Honda has really spent time getting
it developed and sorted. For the 2022 year model, the Honda
250 really went under the knife and all of the upgrades and
improvements made a huge difference to what was already a
pretty good machine. The most obvious change was the fact
that Honda fitted a single silencer rather than the two that we
became used to. Increases of 10% more top end power and
15% torque across the rev-range reduce the gear changes and
allows you to hold the same gear for longer with more flexible
power. They also played with gear ratios, so where we complained
about a lack of torque on the earlier models, they got
it sorted with this one. The ratios are also adjusted with first

gear being taller, second a little shorter, third taller again and fourth &
fifth both shorter. It’s light, fast and comfortable and… well, just so easy
to ride. And this absolutely became apparent in the tighter terrain that
we enjoy. It does not have as much torque as some of the more focused
enduro models out there, but it also does not stall all over the plsce in
trickier terrain and sand. This bike also comes with riding modes, but
this time, we just left it in fast and let the bike do the rest. It is just so
much fun. Quick through the trees and tight sections and more than
fast enough in the flat-out stuff. Quick, forgiving and easy to ride. With a
proper quality all round feel.
We asked John Botha who has just moved up from the 125 class to give
us his take:
We need to mention that although he’s still young, John is tall like a giraffe
and he climbed off his extended 250 Kawasaki onto the far smaller
Honda for this test.
Conclusions.
It’s awesome to see other Japanese brands reappearing on our race circuits.
It’s great to see teams taking it all so seriously… and… results are
starting to trickle through. The bikes are light, fast and competitive. We
hope that this is the start of greater things for South African Off-Road
He says:
“Moving from a 125 2-stroke to a 250 four stroke this year was quite a
big jump but a bike like this Honda makes it quite easy. It’s easy to ride
and that makes a big difference. The bike feels strong with great bottom
end and when you wring her she’s fast at the top. The bike is nimble,
handles and corners so well. I’m really impressed. I’ll need to do some
setup, my bike is sorted for my size, but getting a Honda ready won’t
take much.”
Ride Train Race
Gives Back to
the Community
Through Youth
Development.
Giving back:
The Ride Train Race academy (RTR) is
all about introducing youth to Off-Road
Motorcycling and Motocross by offering
training programmes that encourage both
boys and girls to get into the sport.
Through their extensive network of contacts
throughout the industry, the founders
of Ride Train Race are uniquely well-placed
to inspire the next generation to achieve
their full potential in the saddle and hopefully
nurture future champions.
Tony Riddell and Ryan Hunt (Director
Vermont Sales/Tork Craft) are both
former MX champions. They won multiple
championships, retired, and then came
out of retirement to win again. Today, with
support from leading brands including
Tork Craft and Motul, they are focusing on
helping young RTR riders achieve their own
goals.
Tony & Ryan’s aims in establishing and
supporting RTR are to give back to the
sport and to the Motocross and off-road
riding communities. Along the way, they
are helping kids to have fun, stay safe
and compete in the Inland, Regional and
National Championships.
Ryan and Tony are committed to making
the sport more inclusive, and as such their
training programmes are geared to both
boys and girls aged from 3 to 16 years old,
starting with 50cc all the way up to 125cc
classes.
The young riders can choose their own
brand of bike, and as members of RTR they
get great value from their monthly training
package fees. This includes four training
sessions per week.

To expand their reach and engage with more
young riders, RTR also works with other wellknown
pro-riders to coach some sessions
(like “Taki” Bogiages from the Pepson Plastics
Kawasaki Motul Team and Technical Manager at
Motul) at different tracks around SA.
In addition to receiving training, students get
logistical support at races and events. The RTR
offering has already attracted 80 riders with 35
actively racing - National MX, Regionals, Inland
series, and Enduro across SA. Recently young
riders from neighbouring Botswana have joined
the academy choosing to travel to SA for training.
“We’re delighted about the response to Ride
Train Race from young riders and their parents,”
commented Tony and Ryan. “It’s extremely
rewarding to see how well our efforts to give back
have been received, and we’re excited to see our
young mentees develop and progress in their
riding ability,” they added.
Katelyn Pretorius part of the junior Pepson Plastics Kawasaki Motul team and
curently signed up to Ride Train Race.
“At Motul we are passionate about making
motorsports more welcoming and more diverse,”
commented Mercia Jansen, Motul Area Manager
for Southern and Eastern Africa and the Indian
Ocean. “We’re delighted to have the opportunity
to help nurture riding enthusiasts, whether they
are future world champions or weekend warriors,
as well as the trainers who are making it happen,”
she added.
The best way to understand what makes Ride
Train Race so special is to hear from some of
their riders:
Rayden Woolls
Zoe Botha
• Qhamani ‘Q’ Thu (8 years old), MX,
currently racing in WOMSA Inlands, MSA
Regionals and Nationals. When asked about the
sport, Q commented that, “Dirt biking needs a lot
of concentration and dedication, so be brave, stay
calm and enjoy the sport.”
• Katelyn Pretorius (12 years old) offroad,
currently 7th in National Cross-Country and 9th
in GXCC says that, “Making friends with kids who
have the same interests, improving ourselves and
motivating each other to become better riders
is what I enjoy most about being part of the RTR
academy.”
• Rayden Woolls (9 years old), Offroad,
Current standing in championships: 1st MSA
Free State Regional Championship, 1st MSA
Northern Regions Regional Championship, 3rd
MSA National Championship. Rayden described
his best moment this year as, “Being chosen to
represent South Africa once again in the 2022 FIM
Africa MXOAN (Motocross of African Nations)
event”.
• Zoe Jae Botha (14 years old), MX,
WOMSA Inlands, MSA Regionals and Nationals,
has this advice for any child wanting to take up
the sport, “Start joining the racing community at a
young age and don’t give up when it gets hard!”
With almost 180 entries at an extremely cold and misty
Chestnut Hill MX Park, the day got underway almost an
hour late, while we waited for the mist to lift enough to
allow the riders to get on with their practice laps. Most
of the starts had gates of enthusiastic competitors
who were itching to race after the mornings delays.
The ladies again held their own, with eighteen ladies
competing for top honours on the day.
The125cc and support classes are getting stronger
with around 30 riders in each class. Fantastic racing
was had by all as we chased the early sunset. Prize
giving, (post Covid restrictions), was well attended with
great support for all of the competitors.

Words: Uncle X
Pics: Sean Versfeld - Cloud 9
With over 180 entries across all the classes, practice got underway
at 8am sharp on this well prepped senior motocross track on the
West Rand. As per usual, all of the start gates were full of cold
but excited riders ready to take on their fellow riders on the fart
and challenging track. The support classes seem to be growing in
support at each new event.
The ladies managed 14 entries on the line after recent injuries
had prevented some from competing, but they were still there
to support their fellow riders. The 65cc and 85cc classes were
also very well supported with some of the riders having recently
returned from some European MX Racing experience. A great day
of racing again at the Inland MX.

Linex Yamaha Junior Development Series –
Round 5 – Dirt Bronco – 29 May 2022
Words: Uncle X
Pics: Cloud 9
It was another freezing cold morning at
the race track. As the sun rose and mist
lifted, the enthusiastic young novice riders
were excited to get racing on the longest of
the junior tracks in the series. The classes
included the 50cc PW class, 50cc A & B,
65cc A & B and 85cc A & B.
The classes are timed during practice and
then separated into speed classes, ( A &
B). This allows the competitors to ride with
riders of similar speed which makes for
some exciting racing in each class. At each
event, the Inland MX committee identify
riders that have improved adequately and
recommend their promotion into the Inland
Motocross championship events.
Another great day of racing and
camaraderie among these junior novice
riders.

6 – Smoking Pistons – 19 June 2022
Words: Uncle X
Pics: Cloud 9
The cold weather saw a reduced field of junior
novice riders lining up to improve their skills on
the MX track.
Unforeseen circumstances saw a move from the
junior MX track to a shortened version of the
senior MX track.
With only a short practice session on the
previously unseen track, racing was exciting in all
the classes.
Another great day of racing with these future
motocross champions.
Thanks to all the sponsors and supporters.

Last month we introduced you to this lot:
Loosely translated into “riding around” is the brainchild of Gus and
Mariette Maartens.
A bunch of old delivery bikes on a 10 day trip to the Karoo and beyond
and back to GP.
They sent us this feature and even had it translated into engels for us…
but we decided that it was best to cut it back and tone the taal down a
bit for print and run it in their mother tongue. What a cool adventure.
What a “Lekker” read. We have had to split it over a few issues simply
because it’s too long to print the whole lot in one issue. So here’s the
second piece.
You do need a bike in your life!
DAG 4 GROBLERSHOOP – RIEMVASMAAK 259km
strawberry kondoom by sy bril. Dat hy belaglik lyk, is ‘n “under statement”…’n
Riemvasmaak toe gaan.
Ons eet watertand skaapstertjies en mash by The Red Ox restaurant
op die oewer van die rivier. Saam met ‘n pienk milkshake, loop daai
besigheid soos stroop. Ons ry daarna na Keimoes. Uiteindelik is ons oppad
Riemvasmaak toe.
geslaap. Dit was nie deel van ons beplanning nie, so ons kos daardie
aand was “energy bars”, ‘n paar stukke droëwors, brandewyn en water
Hoe kom jy daar by Riemvasmaak, wonder julle seker? Vanaf Upington,
neem die N14 – die Kakamas pad. Draai regs by die Riemvasmaak teken,
Hou links,
totdat dit lyk of jy by die dorpie uitry. Daar is ‘n bruin verbleikte bordjie

oorbly daar geen lopende water of krag sal wees nie. Net emmers water
oggend, my moer toe geval het.
Riemvasmaak is
My lyf is seer en ek wil nie my “scooter”
Daar is
ervaar, as jy 75km per uur ry op jou “scooter”. Jy sien hope wild, pragtige
kampeerplek. Ek breek amper my nek oppad daarheen. Ek sien glad
sanderig. “Etter”, skree ek kliphard toe ek so half gebukkend vorentoe
strompel.
le-ke verjaar…vir Ella, want vandag is haar verjaarsdag.

Dal Koffiewinkel, vir ‘n kondensmelk koffie by Norbert. Wat ‘n interessante
mens is hy!
As jy
valstande weg. Leef roekeloos en vreesloos! Al het ons NIKS nie, het ons
almal tyd. Tyd is GRATIS, maar PRYSLOOS. Leef elke dag voluit, want
Daar aangekom, stop ons by ‘n
pragtige tuisnywerheid, en almal koop vars, tuisgemaakte pasteie en regte
egte basaar poedings.
Vandag gaan hy “amps” trek.
kliphard, “Yes!, this is the highlight of my week!”.
Saam met ‘n paar rumpies, gloei my
Letterlik,
die allermooiste plek op aarde, vir ons. Ons is by die Tankwa Padstal
