Helen Booth
My recent paintings concentrate on the limitless variations of the
single dot. Often, the dots follow disjointed lines or crowd together
in amorphous blocks. Sometimes they are destroyed by gravity with
dripped paints. The works explore both an impulsive and repetitive
way of mark-making that is both gestural and meditative. Straight and
dynamic lines often appear alongside the more gossamer transient
dots in the paintings.
The dot itself can be many things to me, a puncture wound, a
beginning, an end, an existence, or a loss. It can be the end of a
sentence or punctuation in a landscape. It can symbolise both life
and death – a complete stop.
When I paint, I try to balance action and inaction. Oil allows me to
do this, each layer forcing a pause in the work’s construction. I pour
and drag the paint across the surface - this juxtaposition of imposed
structure and the loosely applied paint is an emotional response
to the painting process. My restrained palette creates work that
focuses on the mark without the distraction of colour. This way of
working, the hands-off exchanges of the paint, the force of gravity,
and the element of chance are fundamental to my ideas. The internal
alchemy, meditations of being and not being, of life and death, is what
I strive to capture within my work.
My residency in Iceland has honed my practice. Standing in what
can only be described as a Divine landscape has reinforced my
personal belief that Nature is the most potent force and that
trying to capture the experience of Nature in its purest form is
essential to me as an artist.
In life and in Nature, the cycle of birth and rebirth is key.

Jane Cairns
My work is about finding beauty in the ordinary. It’s about the small things and recognising the accidental poetry
in the unnoticed and overlooked. Living in the city this is often found in apparently insignificant details of the
built environment - the way a surface has weathered, the juxtaposition of materials, the sculptural qualities of
found forms.
Taking an experimental approach to ceramic processes and materials to reflect the forms, colours and textures I
find in these places my work captures the unexpected, quiet beauty of neglected environments and found objects.
Coming to ceramics as a second career I graduated from University of Westminster (Harrow) in 2011. In 2013 I was
selected for the Crafts Council Hothouse programme, I am a selected member of the Craft Potter’s Association and
a founder member of artist collective haptic/tacit. My studio is in London. on the river by the Thames Barrier.
