With another leg stretching stop, we arrive in Laingsburg where a guy
walked over to ask us where we are heading and to take a closer look
at the bike. He owns a GS, KTM and Ducati. This weekend he is taking a
group of guys for a hunting trip, but he admits he wouldn’t mind having
his GS with on the trip.
As we leave Laingsburg the wind starts to pick up and soon I’m battling
a side wind of around 50 to 60 km/h. The result is that the bike moves
around a little, and every time a truck passes, the force of the wind
is stopped which unsettles the bike again. My wife didnt handle this
very well, but I assured her that we wouldn’t be blown over. It is a little
disconcerting though, some areas in the Karoo where there are empty
fields next to the road, clouds of dust cross the road which lowers
visibility for a good 200 metres or more.
Even so, all things considered, the bike is still immensely stable and I
keep to my desired speed, telling myself that this wind must surely stop
at some stage.
Passing Touws River and De Doorns, the views as you descend into Hex
River Valley with the autumn colours of the vineyards stretching out for
kilometres is truly one of the Western Cape’s prettiest sites.
We pull over outside Worcester for a hot cup of coffee, knowing full
well that we are almost home, but also that the wind can blow down
these mountains at serious speeds. It’s blown over trucks on the bridge
leading into and out of the Huguenot Tunnel.
We decided to rather head over DuToitskloof Pass, where we were happy
that the wind had subsided a little. The road is a little bumpy, but the
view over Wellington, Paarl and into Cape Town is still something to
behold and we take the final pictures before we join the N1 and head for
home.
About 5 km from home the first droplets start to fall on our visors.
We greet the neighbours, make a phone call and pull the bike into the
garage.
