How bamboo cultivation can
replace cotton, timber, plastic,
by stakeholders
•Say it could generate six billion dollars
annually world wide
ABUJA—IF
bamboo
cultivation is embraced by
citizens and the government, it
is capable of replacing cotton,
timber and plastic and could
generate sixty billion dollars
annually world wide.
These facts were disclosed
today by Bamboo and Rattan
Farmers Association as it prepares
to celebrate World Bamboo
Day.
In a statement signed by
Hajiya Ladi Abdullahi
Kattungu, national
secretaryand John Ajie Ogwu,
national president, the association
said bamboo could serve as
alternative to timber, plastic and
cotton.
The association advised state
governments and corporate organizations
to key into the cul-
tivation and processing of bamboo.
The group said that bamboo
products could serve as raw materials
for cottage industries and
reduce unemployment in the
country.
The statement further disclosed
that bamboo by its nature
grows on degraded soil and can
be used for reforestation.
The Bamboo and Rattan Farmers
Association of Nigeria further
disclosed that it was collecting
state by state inventory of bamboo
aimed at enriching the data
base of bamboo spread in Nigeria.
The group said that bamboo
farmers from Akwa Ibom, Bauchi,
Edo,Delta, Ekiti, Jigawa, Kogi,
Nasarawa and Oyo states shall
grace the World Bamboo Day in
Abuja next week.
Edo Agric Ministry to collaborate
with NOA on information
dissemination
By Ozioruva Aliu
ENINCITY—THE Edo
BState Ministry of Agriculture
and Food Security has called
for collaboration with the National
Orientation Agency,
NOA, on information dissemination
as they regard flooding
and other needs to boost food
production and security in the
state.
The commissioner in charge
of the ministry, Stephen
Idehenre stated this when a
delegation from the NOA led
by its State Director Mr. Austin
Odile, paid him an advocacy visit
in his office.
The commissioner harped on
the need for “information regarding
changes in environment
that can adversely affect
farmers particular and the general
public should be brought
to the fore in good time so that
adequate preparations can be
made” adding that extension
workers from the ministry have
been sent to sensitize on measures
to adopt to reduce the effect
of expected flash flood.
The commissioner who noted
that information about the flash
flood expected to affect Edo State
later in the year is coming late as
famers have already planted, appealed
to the Federal Government
to be prepared to provide
aid to affected persons and farmers
when and if the effect of flash
flood or other adverse weather
and climate changes affect harvest.
He expressed the ministry's
readiness to collaborate with
National Orientation Agency,
NOA, in its activities and programmes
that will be of benefit to
the State especially in the Agricultural
sector.
On his part, Odile said the visit
was occasioned by the prediction
of The Nigerian Meteorological
Agency, NiMet, that Edo state
was among the states in Nigeria
that would experience heavy
downpour.
He added that part of their
mandate was to help farmers to
know “when to plant, what to
plant and when to harvest so that the effects
of the flash flood will be minimal.”
GISA-UNODC trains 15,512 staff,
students on drug abuse use
prevention
... presents project
report to LASG
one-year intensive training to the
Commissioner
for
Education, Mrs Folashade
Adefisayo, in Alausa, Ikeja,
President of GISA, Dr Martins
Agwogie, disclosed that out of the
15 selected schools, 12 were
public schools and the rest private
schools.
Giving a breakdown of the
15,512 trainees, he said, 15,440
were students while 72 were staff
and officials of the Ministries of
Education, Health and Youth
and Social Development.
He explained that GISA’s
choice to execute the project in
Lagos State was necessitated by
a survey which showed that the
state had the highest number of
persons using drugs, between
ages 15 and 64.
According to him, “our proposal
was very strong indicating we
want to execute the project in
Lagos state as part of our support
to drug use prevention,"
Giving details of GISA’s journey
to winning the UNODC’s
grant, Agwogie said: “We started
based on evidence that teachers
have significant role as long as
drug abuse prevention is
concerned and based on that
scientific evidence, we felt there
is a need to build the capacity of
teachers in the school setting, to
be able to address substance use
in schools.
Responding, the Commissioner
for Education, Mrs Adefisayo,
described the project as one of
the most remarkable thing the
ministry has ever had.
