Amping up the outdoor areas
Decks, patios and pools have always been in fashion, but
this year the builders took things up a notch—or three.
Outdoor rooms had structural ceilings, solid tiled floors,
fireplaces and covered an expansive amount of space,
often traversing the entire back expanse of the home.
Creating separate but equal spaces
Darkly painted or paneled dens have been a mainstay
for decades, but this year those rooms met their match.
Masculine workspaces often had a feminine counterpart.
One designer we spoke to at the show told us his
and her offices are now the top request she gets from
her clients.
Keeping the mess at bay
Call them what you will: messy kitchens, butler pantries,
sculleries or catering kitchens, these smallish but
mighty-ish rooms are a hot trend for sure. Most include
a second refrigerator, dishwasher and sink. Plenty of
shelving and storage is a must. Coffee makers and
microwaves may find their home here too.
Subtle sophistication
While there were fun splashes of color in a few of the
homes, most of the palettes were on the subdued side.
Paints were neutral, although sometimes dramatically
dark. Tile selections were on the classic, monochromatic
side, and wallpapers were often chosen to introduce texture,
and sometimes pattern, more than color.
Staying out in the open
Transparent walls and doors were seen in most of the
homes this year as well. Some exercise rooms were blatantly
on display behind a glass wall. Home offices and
lower-level bonus rooms were flooded with additional
light thanks to one of their four walls, or a door, being
made of glass.
That’s just a taste. We’ll have a lot more to share in our next issue!
