A season in review
Earlier Josh van der Flier, Andrew Porter
and James Tracy had dotted down while
captain Johnny Sexton was flawless off
the tee.
There was a competitive Leinster Rugby
debut on the night for new signing
Michael Ala’alatoa while, on the other
side of the scrum, Andrew Porter made
his first outing back in the loosehead
position where he had first made his
name.
The visitors mustered only three points on
their first day out in what was traditionally
a northern hemisphere league, those
coming from the boot of Johan Goosen.
Pre-Season Friendly
Leinster Rugby defeated
Harlequins 40-21 at Aviva
Stadium in a Bank of Ireland preseason
friendly ahead of the first
game of the URC season.
Six tries, including four in the first half,
were enough to see off the Gallagher
Premiership champions who showed their
class throughout plenty of spells during
the contest.
Conor O’Brien struck first. The centre,
playing for the first time since February
2020 was on the end of an attack started
by a break from Rob Russell.
Further tries from Scott Penny, Johnny
Sexton and Jamie Osborne helped
Leinster to a 28-7 half-time lead.
Ryan Baird and Academy centre Liam
Turner added to the scoreboard in the
second half while the visitors were able to
pick off a couple of late consolations.
United Rugby Championship
Leinster Rugby kicked
off life in the new United
Rugby Championship with a
comprehensive 31-3 victory over
newcomers Vodacom Bulls.
Ross Byrne pounced for the bonus-point
try midway through the second half which
he also converted, sealing a maximum
return for the hosts.
Rodney Parade
United Rugby Championship
Josh van der Flier earned the
Player of the Match on his 100th
appearance for Leinster Rugby as
the province claimed a one-point
win against Dragons.
The Dragons made it their mission to
make a mess of Leinster’s ruck at Rodney
Parade with an impressive back row of
Aaron Wainwright, Ollie Griffiths and
Ross Moriarty.
Leinster did not quite hit their stride early
on, meeting a very aggressive Dragons
defence.
Leinster’s only score of the afternoon
would come from a Max Deegan try
in the 12th minute, converted by Ross
Byrne, as the flanker continued his return
to action after missing the majority of the
2020/21 campaign with an ACL injury.
Dragons’ Sam Davies kicked two secondhalf
penalties in quick succession but
Leinster dug in and were able to prevent
the resurgent hosts from snatching the
victory.
