The Home of Leinster Women and Leinster 'A' Energia Park [ Opened: 1964 | Capacity: 6,000 ] Energia Park (formerly Donnybrook Stadium) is the current home of the Leinster Women’s team and the Leinster Rugby ‘A’ team. It is also the former home stadium of the Leinster senior team who played there until 2007/08. It still hosts pre-season friendly games for the senior team and, last August, hosted a historic first ever double header featuring both the Men’s and Women’s teams when Leo Cullen’s side welcomed Coventry in a pre-season friendly before the Women’s team kicked off their defence of the Interprovincial series title. The stadium, also home to Bective Rangers and Old Wesley, has undergone a number of upgrades over the last 12 years. In February 2008, a grandstand was completed on the Donnybrook side of the ground while, six years later, a new state of the art 3G pitch was unveiled by Minister for Sport, Michael Ring, TD, following a joint venture between Leinster Rugby and the Department of Sport. A further boost came in March 2018 when Energia announced that it would take over the naming rights to Donnybrook Stadium in a landmark deal which would span 10 years and provide significant investment to the game at all levels within Leinster Rugby. Further improvements came during the summer months of 2019 when the 3G pitch was re-laid and also the Ken Wall Centre of Excellence was opened to cater for the sub-Academy players based there under the watchful eye of Lead sub- Academy Athletic Performance Coach, Dave Fagan. Leinster Rugby hopes that the Ken Wall Centre of Excellence will be the first of five such centres, one based in each of the five areas of Leinster. Energia Park hosts the Bank of Ireland Leinster Rugby Schools Junior and Senior Cup matches up to and including the final at junior level and the semi-finals at senior level. In 2019, it also hosted the final of the Women’s Interprovincial series which Leinster won, beating Connacht 25-12 in the final while also becoming home to the Ireland Women’s team’s Six Nations matches in recent years. In November 2019, the Stadium hosted two Hockey Olympic qualifiers which saw the Ireland Women’s team take on Canada in back-to-back games, eventually qualifying after a sudden death shootout victory. The first leg of the qualifier saw a record attendance for an Irish international women’s sporting event with 6,086 in attendance with that figure broken for the second leg a day later when 6,137 witnessed the Irish victory. 62 | www.leinsterrugby.ie
