During October & NovemberOctober is the best time to try to repair some of the damage the heat of Summer has done tolawns, ours looks more like a brown scrub with colour provided by weeds; scarifying andreseeding as necessary can help.The moist weather following the drought/heat just past, has encouraged a new flurry ofweed growth, we can all do our best to try to keep on top of this pestilence.Garlic and other hardy alliums can be planted in the open.Winter lettuce can also be planted out under glass e.g. cold-frames.Herbaceous shrubs that have been in one place for a long time or have got too big willbenefit from splitting up and discarding the central section. Replant in the new position, andpass the spare plants to your friends.Shrubs that have grown a lot during the warm weather, will benefit from half the length oftheir new growth being pruned to reduce the danger of damage from wind-rock. The softgrowth can be added to the compost.Now, while the soil is still warm, is the time to plant bare-rooted plants; along with SpringBulbs, Daffs in October and Tulips in November. The early gardener gets the best bulbs, youcan leave the dried up and shrivelled ones for latecomers.Early Sweet-peas can be sown in November in tall pots or rootrainers, and over wintered incold-frames.Continue tidying up perennials, and Summer pots. Move the delicate plants under-cover.Plant indoor Hyacinths and Hippeastrum (amarylis) for flowering around Christmas. Leave atleast the top above the soil.As the dark days approach now is a good time to clean the glass to maximise light levels.
