without any fear. This is the crucial period/

part of your life, which will give you

maximum opportunities to excel in various

fields. Just do grab them and do not look

back. The onus is on you to build your career

as per your desire and requirement. You can

learn about different cultures by adapting

yourself, and you should always remember

to respect all cultures. Northeast India is

very rich in terms of natural beauty, diverse

cultures, and festivals. Do find some time out

to assimilate and enrich yourself with a

unique experience. We must be vigilant and

dynamic all the time, but it must not be

relevant for the ranking alone. Happiness

lies in success, and in turn, success depends

on physical and mental soundness. Now you

are on your own feet, and there are many

decisions that you have to take judiciously.

You will be fit only if you can achieve or

maintain a certain degree of physical and

mental soundness. You should adhere to

strict discipline in every sense.

While we all are here to help you in all

circumstances, you should also be

responsible and careful about your

responsibilities towards others. Indiscipline

will not be tolerated in any form – it must

always be kept in your mind. It is pertinent

to point out that you should follow all the

rules and regulations of the institute, which

are available in the ordinances. You have just

started your career, and we hope you will

surpass your difficulties and cherish your

Grading

The grading is done on a 10-point

scale. All courses carry certain

credits. The number of credits is

twice the number of hours of classes

attended for that course per week.

At the end of each

semester, grades shall be awarded in

the respective courses based on

performance in each course. Each

grade has certain points i.e,

10,9,8,7,6,5,4, and 0 for AA, AB, BB,

BC, CC, CD, DD and F respectively.

The credits are multiplied by the

points and the sum divided by the

total number of credits that have

been registered for. The SPI obtained

in subsequent semesters would

amount to cumulative CPI. The

students would be able to understand

grading better after their firstsemester

grade report.

Spardha

Spardha, the Inter Hostel Sports

Competition, provides platform for

all sportsmen, experienced and

amateurs, in the campus. With the

pride of your hostel at stake, this

time in the sporting arena, Spardha

will let you push the boundaries of

what you can do for your hostel. It

stretches throughout the even

semester, and sees by far the largest

participation from the students at

IIT Guwahati. From aquatics to

soccer, you can follow any sport that

you love.

Spirit

Spirit is the annual sporting festival

of IIT Guwahati. Held in the last

week of October, it witnesses

participation from across the North

East. Some of the sporting talent on

show is truly spectacular, with teams

from our college pitted against

professional sportsmen of real

caliber.

Spirit also serves the purpose of

providing our probables for the Inter

IIT Sports Meet an opportunity to

iron out the flaws in their game, and

gain some valuable match practice.

Spirit is a spectacle not to be missed

if you are a sports enthusiast.

Inter IIT Sports Meet is a contest held every winter

at one of the IITs. The Meet affords the opportunity

to the sportspersons from the IITs to showcase their

talents. An Inter-IIT Aquatic meet is held separately

as a part of the main meet each year preceding the

main Inter-IIT Sports meet. The team excelling in

both the meets is further awarded the General

Championship. The probables for the meet are

selected in September and are then subjected to

regular coaching almost every evening in the odd

semester by excellent coaches. A sports camp is

organized at the end of the semester two weeks

before Meet. It's not easy to get into the Inter-IIT

contingent. But dedication, hard work and passion

can make everything possible. So if you want to

represent your Institute at the highest level then

dare and soar!

Alcheringa - the annual cultural

festival of IIT Guwahati, also the

biggest college fest in the whole of

the north-east has marked its

presence every year since 1996. It’s

that time of the year when not just

the college residents of IITG, but the

whole of Guwahati city has got its

adrenaline stacked up. The last days

of winter, the beautiful campus of

IITG and Alcher - ever existed such a

deadly combo? - You can’t really give

it a miss. Lose yourself in the

melodies flowing with the air as they

string us into absolute harmony, step

up that tempo and sway to the edgy

beats, cast a spell on the audience

with your bewitching voice, live the

dream you have always wanted to,

leave behind all the worries of life, all

the materialistic things in the

lackluster and mundane world you

live.

Tens of thousands of students and

visitors from all over the country get

together to celebrate cultural diversity

and embrace the differences in

society. Known for its fervent

exhibition of art and culture,

Alcheringa has played expert host to

a variety of eminent artists.

There are uncountable moments that

make everyone in the organizing

team connected and motivated

towards a common aim. The aim is

nothing but what we call the Alcher

feel. Standing right in front of the

stage and seeing 30,000 people

matching frequencies with the onstage

artists is a moment to cherish

and remember.

Techniche- the Annual Techno-

Management festival of IIT Guwahati

is an emotion in itself, made of

sleepless nights and unforgettable

memories. A forum where learning

meets fun, Techniche provides the

perfect environment to nurture

inquisitiveness within the youth.

Packed with numerous events,

competitions, workshops, and

initiatives, we boast of having

something to pique everyone's

interest. Techniche 2020 was no

exception, wherein we built India's

first virtual Techno-Management fest

from the ground up, faced with the

unforeseen situation of the pandemic,

courtesy of the relentless efforts of the

team.

Team Techniche

The Techniche Team consists of

different modules having their own

specific and essential roles in bringing

the fest to life. The Events Modules

include Robotics, Workshops, Tech-

Expo, Competitions, Initiatives,

Lecture Series and Pronites, Nexus,

and Technothlon, which put their

heads together to organize a plethora

of events during the fest. The Support

Modules, namely, Creatives, Media,

WebOps, Marketing, and Branding,

focus on providing all the necessary

backing to conduct a fest of this

stature.

Despite all odds, Techniche 2021 was

conducted with full enthusiasm,

although a virtual fest. The fest is

gearing up for its return with a boom.

The start to the comeback began with

the successful conduction of the

Guwahati Half Marathon, the largest

student body-organized marathon of

India. With the main event starting on

September 1st, Techniche presents the

opportunity to enjoy the first offline

fest for Masters and PhD freshers.

Market Complex

IIT Guwahati's version of a shopping

complex, it houses salons, beauty

parlours, gift shop, pickle shop, fancy

store, footwear shop, dry cleaning,

hardware shops, cycle store, sweat shop,

tailor shop,

grocery stores, restaurant, and ATMs.

Situated near the main gate, it is quite far

from all the hostels, but if there is

something you need, this is probably the

right place to find it.

Things to do ...

Here are a few helpful recommendations about how

to make the most of your life at IIT Guwahati

Ask for help if you need it, be it in academics, financial, mental or

otherwise. You have friends here. And helpful seniors, counsellors if

you need them. Ragging is a crime, any form of casual interaction with

seniors is expected to be taken sportively, you can always walk away.

For creativity, all seniors become bhaiyas and didis by default. (No one

knows why!)

Undertake a ‘trip’ to the View Point. Try out all the features and

settings of your/ your friend’s shiny smartphone camera. Make all those

poses your JEE brain of 2 months prior would have deemed too stupid

for an intellectual such as you. Publish these photos on your 30+ social

media outlets pretending to have visited a nature retreat. While you are

there, you should also spend a second or two enjoying the beauty of IIT

Guwahati.

Walk to every nook and cranny of this 700- acre majesty. Identify one

spot as your group’s exclusive haunt. Survey the area - measure sound

levels in decibels, analyse the lighting, measure the distance to the

nearest security checkpost and the nearest IITG_WIFI hotspot.

It sometimes takes awfully long to get things repaired, we are an

Indian Institute after all, be careful not to wreck public necessities

like washing machines, taps, or anything people might require on

a daily basis.

L I T E R AT U R E

ARTS

SCIENCE

Author Name

Issue textbooks. After you get your provisional ID card, treat the first

library working day as the Flipkart Big Billion Day sale. Rush into the

crowd of unknowns and pick up as many required recommended

textbooks as that ID card can afford you. Maybe even find a partner in

crime or two in the process. If the stack of books makes you question

the tensile strength of the shelf in your room, congratulations, you have

done a good job. Then, try to make good use of them.

Though sleeping in library is strictly prohibited, you will always find

the sound of snoring more disturbing than the sound of students

discussing doubts!

Attempting to solve your tutorials on your own is highly recommended.

But sometimes these stunts cannot be performed at hostel rooms

without expert’s guidance. (Get help from: Internet/TA/ Friends)

Staying in your hostel rooms silently doing nothing is a big NO. Sure,

spend time studying, but get out of those rooms as frequently as

possible.

Most of the professors understand the stresses of undergraduate life and

do not disturb you if you fall asleep in their class sometimes. But, try to

avoid this as much as possible. Always try to get your beauty sleep at

night. Just like it was meant to be.

Food Court

IITG has a food court right behind New SAC (Student Activity

Centre) It has the following to offer:

Spectrum - The hub of affordable, value for money South Indian food on campus.

With a variety of delicious uttapams, dosas, idli-vada and biryanis. Be wary though

since the quality of sambhar and the number of chutneys varies like the moon.

Foodie's World - The place to go for delicious pasta, calzones and garlic bread.

They also forayed into decent burgers. You'll most likely be seen here during the

multiple BOGO pizza offers, which often coincide with Indian cricket matches.

Word of caution, you might graduate before you get the pizza during a BOGO

though.

Purabi - Start your day with a glass of milk, This is for the one who has a healthy

habit of taking milk and dairy products or the person willing to make it a habit. A

pleasant place to have shakes, lassi, sodas and many more such products

Florentine - This is your token air-conditioned multicuisine, if you’re looking for

The Great NorthIndian Gravy dishes, or if you don’t mind bones in your schezwan

chicken.

Ambrosia - This is for the one with a sweet tooth. Ambrosia is here to help with

pastries, brownies, lava cakes, an unending supply of soft drinks and the carrot

cake.

Baskin Robbins - When the going gets

tough, the tough get Baskin Robbins. Not

like you’ll make it through if you’re not

tough enough. They offer the standard 31

flavours and the standard discount on the

31st of a month.

Luncheonette

Café Coffee Day - More than the usual caffeinated delights, CCD upholds its

status as the restaurant with the best view. Sitting on the semi open-air

balcony in front of the Library, you can enjoy a full panoramic view of the

best part of the academic complex, and watch the sky change colours as

you pick your roasted coffee beans off the whipped cream.

Rolls Mania - A food truck that serves a range of quick bites, known for

their delicious rolls. They have a wide range of 'Kathi Rolls' in veg, non-veg

and egg. Diet conscious people have an option of ordering their roll in

wheat. You will find a generous twist of Indian flavours on their platter,

inspired by the diversity and culture of our beloved country.

Lauriat - Want some Fine Dining?

You’ll get it at Lauriat. From Indian and

Chinese cuisine to Italian pastas and

pizzas, this is by far the best place on

campus to enjoy a quiet night out.

Khokha Market - Situated right

outside the campus, khokha is the go to

hangout spot. This is the soul of

campus life, with creamy chai, delicious

chaat, relishing maggi, delicious

chicken pakoras at extremely

affordable rates. It also houses a

general amenities store, medical store,

cycle repair shop, and multiple

barbershops.
