POSTAL MEDAL AUCTION - 73
was a few old-time collectors in far off South Africa who were the first to stimulate an interest in
this group of Anglo Boer War collectables.
City Coins in the past has been entrusted with the disposal of several important ABW medallion
collections – most notably those formed by the late Dr Felix Machanik of Johannesburg and Mr
Willem Joubert of Stellenbosch.
At the time it was evident that Henk sought out the very best from both these collections. For
almost 50 years he has been diligent in seeking out not only the rare and elusive specimens but has
also managed to acquire a collection of considerable quality.
Following on from the auction by City Coins of his spectacular Boer War Battles collection in
November 2020 it is fitting that his superb collection of ZAR and Anglo Boer War medallions is
now offered by City Coins in a single catalogue. For this reason, I urge collectors to read the
“Introduction by Robert Mitchell” on page 71. He has written a thought provoking article on
the subject of medallions that deserves to be read by every discerning collector. “A must read” for
the serious collector.
The name of Henk Loots will surely be linked synonymously in the future with the medals and
medallions of the Boer War.
