Our chatswere not confined to medals and military history. He told me about his decision to relocate to New Zealandand the need to sell his collection. That New Zealand didn’t work was difficult, but it was the measure of theman that he acknowledged that it was a mistake and he returned to Vryheid. I got the sense that, having madethe decision, he was going to make the best life he could back in Vryheid. This included a resumption of hismedal collecting. Unlike many, who see medal collecting as an investment, Keith followed his passion and asa result he amassed an interesting and diverse collection. As is so often the case, he collected medals to thehistory of his “own backyard”. He was quite expert in the Holkrans massacre, which occurred at the end ofthe Anglo Boer War. Over the years, he also collected to the SAAF and to the Battle of Delville Wood. Whatstruck me most about Keith was his honesty, trustworthiness and reliability. There are not many people ofwhom it could be said that, “his word was his bond“. In Yiddish there is a word, Mensch, which describes aman of integrity and honour – Keith was such a man.Marius Dippenaar wrote: –It was very sad news for me, when I heard that Keith had passed away.Keith and I, our path's crossed just over five years ago. Being a fellow passionate collector of Militaria, initiallyI had this in common with Keith. We contacted each other with regards to purchasing, selling and tradingmilitaria with each other. The first time we spoke, we connected very well from day one and spoke as if weknew each other for many years. This continued for many years.I also had the privilege to do some medal mounting for him, on his grandfather’s medals. It was always apleasure to answer the phone when Keith phoned. We would often chat casually over the phone, audible orWA, about militaria and related topics.Though I never met him personally, I got to know him quite well. He was not just a fellow collector to me, Ibut would classify him as a friend. Unfortunately, Keith passed away before we could meet,but during our years of interaction over the phone, e-mail and social media, I probably got to know Keith quitewell, or as well as one can know another through these rather impersonal electronic means. His love for hishometown of Vryheid provided inspiration for his collecting theme which often included medals to men fromthis town. He was a man of great faith, but it is striking that he was never one who wanted to impose his beliefson others nor to judge them. I miss sharing my hobby with my friend.Lastly his son Kevin wrote: –My Dad was born in Witbank on the 10 th of August, 1951. Went to Witbank High School and completed his 2years’ service with the South African Armies Technical Services Corps. He married my Mom, Rhoda, on 23 rdof August, 1976. The family ended up settling in Vryheid which has a very long and interesting history for asmall town. As long as I can remember, he was fascinated by military history and militaria. Whenever wetravelled for business he was scouting for new dealers and visiting medal buddies, as I would refer to them,often travelling well out of our way to find them. He enjoyed the stories that the medals told and created atangible link to history they represented. Collecting wasn't just a hobby but a way he could connect with likemindedpeople around the globe.
