Parent Parent and and Community Community Volunteers: Volunteers: WE WE NEED NEED YOU YOU As parents, guardians, teachers, and community members, we can all agree our children are precious. Furthermore, we’ve learned through the years that when families and community members get involved in our children’s learning, students get better grades and test scores, and their educational experiences are more meaningful. As a volunteer, you can actively get involved in the education of our children. If you are interested in bringing your strengths and talents into the classroom, please contact the Parent Resource Center at 835-4552.* *To ensure the safety of all our students, we require that school activity volunteers be approved by building administration. All volunteers will be asked to attend an orientation session. PARENT PARENT PARENT RESOURCE RESOURCE CENTER CENTER The Parent Resource Center, located in the Hermon Hutchens Elementary School, offers resources for parents and is the official headquarters for HHES volunteers. It also houses the offices for Indian Education, Bilingual Ed., Title I and Drug Free Schools. Parents are encouraged to drop in and utilize the Lending Library, volunteer, or call for information about school activities. Parent classes/seminars are offered throughout the year. The Lending Library contains a wide variety of materials on parenting, psychology, child development, learning disabilities, special needs, teaching, how to handle grief, discipline problems, divorce, games & activities, sign language, etc. We carry videos on many of these subjects as well. Valdez Reads...Reading Tutor Program is a volunteer cooperative effort between the school and the community that provides reading assistance to 1- 6 grade students. Alyeska Pipeline partnered with Valdez City Schools to offer this program. District Newsletter “The Voice” of Valdez City Schools contains information about events and activities in grades K-12. This monthly newsletter is published by staff at the Parent Resource Center and supported with federal grant program funds. This district-wide newsletter is sent to all families of students in the Valdez City Schools. Volunteers are always welcome at Valdez City Schools. We ask that you register annually with the Parent Resource Center (HHES) and have a current TB test on file. Volunteers are asked to sign in and out with each respective school office. Call the Parent Resource Center at 835-4552 if you would like information on volunteering.
HERMON HUTCHENS ELEMENTARY STUDENT/ PARENT HANDBOOK ACCIDENT Every accident in the school building, on the school grounds or at any school sponsored event must be reported to the person in charge, who will contact the school office, and the parents will be notified if necessary. ACTIVITIES Elementary students have the following extracurricular and co-curricular activities available: Battle of the Books, Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, Science Fair, Poetry Club, Signing Club, Student Council and a variety of Art Programs. ADDRESSING TEACHERS All teachers will be addressed by their proper title: Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms. ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE Regular attendance is essential to a student’s success in school. When a student is unable to attend school, parents should call the office by 10:00 a.m. Parents should give the student’s name, teacher’s name, and reason for the absence. If a parent fails to call, the school will call the home to confirm the reason for the student’s absence. Upon the child’s return to school, please send a note explaining reason for the absence. Elementary students must not be absent more than ten (10) times per semester or they will be considered for retention i the same grade the following year. EXCEPTIONS: 1. Illness or medical appointment substantiated by a statement from a medical practitioner and/or parent or legal guardian. 2. Death in the student’s family necessitating an absence. 3. Other special circumstances approved by the principal. CONDITIONAL EXCEPTION: 1. Any student may be absent up to five (5) days in addition to the 10-day limit each semester for special reasons if the student completes pre makeup prior to departure. 2. If a student plans to be absent for some special reason, the student and their parent should check with the principal or the attendance secretary prior to the absence. If a special absence is approved ( examples include: a family trip, a special hunting trip, or a college visit) the student will be expected to complete a pre makeup sheet on which the student will list the assignments for the class she/she will miss (Elementary students will arrange absence with the principal in lieu of pre makeup sheet). The student is expected to complete the assignments before he/she leaves and submit completed work to their teachers for approval and then bring the pre makeup sheet to the office. If pre makeup is not completed by the student and this form returned to the attendance secretary prior to departure, the student shall not be entitled to the additional five absences. 3. Additional days must be granted for exceptional circumstances for activities such as national competition or academic competition. LOSS OF CREDIT/COURSE FAILURE When an Elementary student‘s absences exceed the limit, the principal will consider the student for retention in the same grade. EXCUSED ABSENCES An excused absence counts toward the total limit of absences set forth in this policy unless the absence otherwise meets the exceptions provided under Exceptions/Conditional Exceptions. 1. Sickness or medical appointment of student - shall count toward 10 times limit unless substantiated by statement from medical practitioner, and/or parent or guardian. 2. An absence authorized by a parent/guardian/or student if of legal age and living on their own. If the absence is unexcused, the student will be allowed to make up the work missed and will be given full credit for the work, if completed within the time allowed (One day for each day absent, up to two weeks). UNEXCUSED ABSENCES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: (Counts against the 10 times limit) A student: 1. Skips a class having once arrived at school 2. Leaves the school campus without checking out through the office. 3. Is suspended in or out of school. 4. Is more than 10 minutes late for class. If the absence is not excused, make up work may be requested by the student or parent for the purpose of keeping up with course(s) expectations, but no credit will be given for that work. Note: Any student assigned to In-School Suspension will be considered absent with respect to the 10 day absence limit, but will be allowed to submit work for credit. SCHOOL-SPONSORED ABSENCES 1. Students are considered in attendance when absent from school due to school-sponsored activities. BAND Students are encouraged to participate in the Band Program. Students may begin band in the fifth grade and continue the program the following year as Advanced Band members. BOOKS Textbooks and workbooks are furnished without cost to each student. All books, however, remain the property of Valdez City Schools. A place will be provided where the student’s name, date of issue and condition of book may be recorded. Lost and/or damaged books will result in the levying of fines. Note: If a book is lost or badly damaged, it may be judged beyond repair by the teacher. Books found to be beyond repair will be paid for by the student based on the replacement cost of a new current issue. BUS TRANSPORTATION AND REGULATIONS The following rules for pupils riding buses are basically from the official “Rules and Regulations of the State of Alaska.” As such, they are also the rules of the Valdez City Schools. AT ALL TIMES 1. Exercise good manners, caution and consideration for other people. 2. Obey the school bus driver; his/her primary concern is for your safety. 3. A driver may assign pupils a seat. HERMON HUTCHENS ELEMENTARY HANDBOOK 4. Pupils must not have anything in their possession that may cause injury to another. WAITING FOR THE SCHOOL BUS 1. Stay a safe distance from the roadway. 2. Be at your stop five minutes ahead of time; the driver cannot wait for you. 3. Be in line when the school bus approaches. 4. Stay clear of wheels until the bus has come to a complete stop. 5. Let the smaller children board first. 6. Pupils must cross the highway only in front of the school bus when given permission by the school bus driver. 7. Walk on the left-hand side of the road facing traffic. BOARDING THE SCHOOL BUS 1. Always use the handrail and go up the steps one at a time. 2. Don’t push, crowd, or disturb others. 3. Go directly to your seat and be seated. 4. No animals large or small of any kind are allowed on the school bus at any time. CONDUCT ON THE SCHOOL BUS 1. Keep the aisle clear. 2. Place books or other gear on your lap. 3. Avoid loud talking, confusion, or anything else that might distract the driver. 4. Keep head, arms and body inside the bus. 5. Do not throw objects inside or outside the bus. 6. Do not chew tobacco, smoke, eat or drink on the bus. 7. Remain seated until the bus has come to a complete stop and get off only at your stop. 8. Do not open windows without permission. 9. Assist in keeping the bus clean. Pupils can be held responsible for damages to the interior of the school bus. 10. In general, classroom conduct will be
