Explore new programs
Would you like to change your career or earn a degree or certificate that will help
you advance quickly? Here are two programs to consider, and you can explore more
options at elgin.edu/academics.
• Ophthalmic Technician: In this rapidly expanding field, technicians assist
ophthalmologists in caring for patients’ eyes and eyesight. They often perform
a patient’s initial exam, including evaluating eye muscle movements and
gathering information about their health history.
• Recovery Support Specialist: Recovery support specialists draw on their
own life experiences to help others develop and maintain their recovery from
substance abuse disorders, mental health disorders, or dual diagnoses. ECC is
among the first community colleges in Illinois to offer this program.
Support for undocumented students
To strengthen its support of undocumented students, ECC developed a custom
workshop for ECC staff. In May, 50 student services staff members completed the
3-hour training module led by the ECC Undocumented Student Support Committee.
Participants discussed the unique challenges faced by undocumented students.
Content included information about and resources for undocumented students’
legal, financial, and mental health concerns.
“The well-being and success of our undocumented students and their families is
a priority,” said Professor Manuel Salgado, PhD. Salgado said the workshop will
be offered to more staff in the future. He added, “Resources and supports to help
people achieve their success is undoubtedly tied to legislation at the state and
federal level, and we stay current and involved with these changes to inform
best practices.”
