Town’s blooms land top award
Chesterfield’s green spaces,
floral displays and innovative
community projects have earned
the borough a top accolade
J
UDGES of the East Midlands In Bloom
awards were impressed by the breadth and
quality of Chesterfield’s entry in this year’s
competition – naming the town as winner in the
‘Small City’ category. It is the first time the
borough has scooped the sought-after award.
Representatives from the Chesterfield In Bloom
committee and Chesterfield Borough Council were
presented with the award at a ceremony.
Edinburgh Road Pocket Park won the Award for the
Best New Permanent Landscape, the Britannia Inn in
Brampton won a Gold Award and the new Dementia
Awareness Garden on Rose Hill won a Judges’ Award.
Coun Jill Mannion-Brunt, the council’s cabinet member
for health and wellbeing, said: “Winning this award is a
real triumph for our community and is testament to years
of hard work by both local volunteers and our officers.
“The award recognises that our borough is a bright and
beautiful place to live, with lots of fantastic green spaces
for our community to enjoy. Thank you to everyone that
has contributed to our success in this competition over
the years.”
Chris Turner, chair of the Chesterfield In Bloom
committee, said: “It takes a lot of effort from many
different community groups and the council to ensure
the borough is looking its best in time for judging. I’m
delighted that we’ve won this year, it’s been a long time
coming but it’s fantastic to be recognised for our efforts.”
The new Dementia Awareness Garden on Rose Hill
was completed earlier this year and officially opened by
the East Midlands In Bloom judges. The project was a
collaboration between Chesterfield Borough Council and
David Shaw. Not only is it a calm spot to relax in the
town centre, but interpretation boards also aim to help
visitors understand more about dementia and the impact
it has.
Wakey wakey!
It’s panto time
It might have a new venue this year but
Chesterfield Theatres’ popular Christmas
pantomime promises to be as fun-filled as
ever. Deborah Wain meets the cast
W
6
HILE the Pomegranate Theatre is closed as
part of a multi-million pounds upgrade,
performances will switch to the nearby Winding
Wheel. Sleeping Beauty will be the first family
panto to be staged at the Winding Wheel in its
history.
Venue manager, Anthony Radford, said staff would be
making various changes to accommodate the show, starring
actress Michelle Collins, as the Bad Fairy.
He said: “We were absolutely committed to keeping the
panto alive while work goes on at the Pomegranate.”
Michelle, who played EastEnders’ Cindy and Coronation
Street’s Stella, has appeared in panto a number of times but
Sleeping Beauty will be her first show in the North of
England.
She said: “I like getting out of London and from what I’ve
seen of the area, people are really friendly here and the
countryside is beautiful.
“We have a really strong cast and I’m sure that it’s going to
be a lot of fun.”
While best know for her work in TV soaps, Michelle said
she enjoys being an “all-round actor” appearing recently in a
play and a film, and panto is very much part of the mix.
“You’ve got to put as much energy into panto as any other
job you do,” she commented.
Michelle added that this year would hopefully be a return to
a more “normal” panto experience following the Covid-19
pandemic.
And that with the cost-of-living crisis biting for many, it will be
more important than ever to offer families some escapism.
She said: “I think people are being careful about spending
money and so you have to give them something really special.
“There’s nothing nicer than seeing the joyful look on the faces
of kids and hearing them laugh.”
Established
Sleeping Beauty will bring three of its cast members back
together; Scottish singer Jai McDowall, who won the fifth season
of Britain’s Got Talent and plays the hero, Lloyd Warbey, host of
Disney’s Art Attack, who is the fool, and Dame, Andre Vincent.
The trio have worked together in panto before so have an
established rapport.
They promise lots of laughs for youngsters and their parents
and grandparents.
Lloyd, who appeared in his first panto aged just seven, said:
“After everything we’ve all been through in the last few years, we
need a bit of cheer and panto is the right medicine.
“Every show is different and I really enjoy the audience
reaction. You don’t get the show proper until the audience is in
and then it evolves.”
Jai added: “You find out what works and what doesn’t as you
go along and tweak it here and there.”
With an intense run of performances, Jai and Lloyd both plan to
spend Christmas itself in Chesterfield. Lloyd’s birthday is on
December 23rd so he will also be celebrating that locally too.
Jai is looking forward to family and friends travelling down
All set to bound onto the Winding Wheel stage in
Sleeping Beauty are, from left: Lloyd Warbey, Olivia Bailey,
Jai McDowall, Andre Vincent and Michelle Collins
from Scotland for the show.
“A group of friends plan the whole New Year around where I
am doing panto and come for the weekend,” he said.
Andre, whose background is in stand-up comedy, is relishing
the chance to don a outrageous frock and play the Dame, his
fifth appearance in that role.
He tells older audience members that they can expect some
chuckles about unfolding current affairs.
“Last year, the Christmas parties at No 10 very quickly got a
mention in pantomimes around the country,” he commented.
When he played the Dame last year, Andre had an amazing 13
costume changes but has yet to find out how many times the
character will swap outfits this year.
Olivia Bailey, Princess Aurora, hails from Nottingham, so she is
performing a little closer to home.
“As a child, I went with my family to the Theatre Royal to see
the panto every year. I would curl my hair and want to look like a
princess and now I am a princess!
“You’re living in a bubble of panto for a few weeks but it feels
like a lovely job to have,” she said.
The production of Sleeping Beauty promises an adventure for
all the family, with exciting special effects depicting Princess
Aurora’s 100-year sleep, glittering costumes and lots of traditional
audience participation in what’s shaping up to be Chesterfield’s
biggest and brightest panto yet.
Sleeping Beauty runs from 6th December to 3rd January.
The Dalton Roofing team
Hello Chesterfield!
WHEN is a new business not a new business? When it’s already been
trading for years and years.
Dalton Roofing may well be a new name to many people here in Chesterfield,
but the family-run company has a proud record of serving thousands of homes
and commercial properties in South Yorkshire, the Peak District and further afield.
Phil Dalton (MIoR) was only 20 years old when he started out way back in 1990,
working from home, with a single van and a collection of hand tools with which to
ply his trade.
Today, with 25 employees, Dalton Roofing has busy depots in Sheffield and now
also here at Chesterfield Road, Sheepbridge, where it took up premises recently.
Said Phil: “We want to establish ourselves with a new market in Chesterfield and
are already well known in the Peak District. This is a good central location for us;
it couldn’t be better. No-one else in Chesterfield is offering what we offer.
“We have a good mix of customers. We complete as many commercial projects
as we do houses and people can ring us for anything. We are the reliable, ‘won’t
let you down’ roofing contractor offering professional advice - and the correct
advice.”
The business handles all manner of repairs, maintenance and re-roofing projects.
It also takes on heritage roofing tasks on buildings of architectural and historical
importance.
Dalton Roofing is justifiably proud of its record over the past 33 years and has in
the region of 250 high-ranking reviews on Google, Yell and Facebook. Dozens of
framed certificates and accolades on the walls of the Sheepbridge premises
provide added peace of mind for customers.
Proud members of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the
Institue of Roofing, the business is always looking to expand and has openings for
time-served skilled roofers. In the past, Dalton Roofing has been associated with
training of Chesterfield College students.
Phil Dalton runs the business alongside his wife, Helen (financial Controller), their
daughter Olivia (office Manager) along with Rachel, son William (Foreman) and
Paul (Site Manager).
Don’t
dump it -
repair it!
I
F you have
something that
needs fixing, a local
repair café may be
able to help you to
mend it.
Repair cafés are a
worldwide network on a
mission to cut waste and
build-up repair skills.
There are now 14 running
across Derbyshire,
including one in
Chesterfield.
Volunteer repairers
tackle small electrical
items such as toasters,
hairdryers, lamps, radios
and headphones.
Clothing, garden tools,
bikes, computers,
hand tools and small
items of furniture can
also be considered for
fixing.
An important aspect of
the work of the cafés is
about empowering people
to be able to do their own
repairs in the future.
Where possible, people
sit with the repairer and
learn from them – such as
how to replace a fuse,
mend a ripped jacket or
clean an item to keep it
working properly.
The cafés are sociable
events – often with free
or low cost refreshments
and a sense of
community. The service
is free but donations are
welcome.
All cafés welcome
enquiries from potential
volunteers with relevant
skills and qualifications.
Members of the successful Hunters property team in Chesterfield
ROPERTY agency Hunters Chesterfield received the ‘Best in County’ award at the
prestigious ESTAS Customer Service Awards 2022 - the biggest awards in the UK
property industry.
The winners were announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London at an event hosted by the
country’s favourite TV property presenter, Phil Spencer, in front of 1,200 guests.
Now in their 19th year, the awards recognise the best estate and letting agents for customer service
based on ratings from clients who have been through the whole moving experience with an agent.
Mat Barnes, manager of Hunters Chesterfield, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this
year’s ESTAS. It means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have judged our
performance.
“We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We
have always been very proud of the personal service and this proves we are delivering what we
promise.”
Phil Spencer, who has hosted The ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003, commented: “I’ve
said it many times but the work of agents, conveyancers and brokers is vastly underrated by the
general public.
“It’s only when clients go through the process that they understand the effort, complexity and hard
work that goes into your job.”
Estate and letting agents were recognised in counties and regions around the UK and Hunters
Chesterfield - who feature on the back page of this magazine each month - won the Derbyshire
accolade.
Tenth defibrillator for town centre
A
BUSINESS in Chesterfield town centre has invested in life-saving equipment.
The Goldsmith Clinic, a specialist in skin rejuvenation, at Lordsmill Street, has bought a
defibrillator which is now registered on the National Defibrillator Network, The Circuit.
This means there are ten defibrillators in Chesterfield town centre, although this will be the first one
located on the busy Lordsmill Street gateway into the town.
If a defibrillator is used within the first four minutes of a person suffering a cardiac arrest, their
chances of survival can increase to 70%, compared to just 5% if defibrillation is delayed.
Owner of The Goldsmith Clinic and registered nurse, Theresa Goldsmith, said: “Having worked in
hospitals and general practice clinics for many years, I know the importance of having quick access to
emergency equipment if something were to happen on site.”
Valley reveals its past life
Pictures: Claire Davison
12
Tw st
Months of dry weather have caused water
shortages throughout the UK. Rivers and
streams have dried to a trickle and water in
some lakes and ponds has disappeared altogether
N
OWHERE is the drought more evident than at the
reservoirs just over the hills in the Derwent Valley.
When they were built between 1935 and 1943, the picturesque villages of
Ashopton and Derwent were sacrificed. Once they were submerged,
everyone thought they had gone forever.
However, in subsequent years of low rainfall, some of the ruins of the old
buildings have been seen. This happened in the dry summers of 1976, 1995
and 2018 and now again in 2022.
Local photographer Claire Davison ranks the area around Derwent,
Ladybower and Howden Dams as one of her favourite places in Derbyshire.
Some of her most spectacular images have shown water cascading over
the downfall at Derwent Dam.
This year, however, she has made several trips here to record the falling
water levels and photograph some of the relics and foundations which
have emerged. On these pages she shares some of her
favourite images.
People travelling to the Derwent Valley to view and
photograph the relics from the lost villages have been advised
to stick to regular roadways and footpaths as exploring out
into the mud on foot can be dangerous. One man had to be
rescued after he became stuck for several hours while
inspecting the ruins.
• Severn Trent applied for a drought permit in October for its
three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley, following what it
says has been the driest six months since 1850.
I
WAS honoured to attend of the Love Chesterfield
Awards recently. As I looked around the packed room
at the Winding Wheel, I felt very proud to be part of the
town.
I saw passion, enthusiasm and dedication from the owners,
employees, family and friends of the 34 businesses
represented there on the night. All the businesses were
independently owned and the majority operating on the high
street.
Through these businesses and the investment being made in
the town, I am confident we are creating a town centre that will
meet the needs of not only shoppers and visitors, but the
businesses that are based there.
The town centre of the future is one that delivers an
experience, a product or service that you can’t get online or
from an out-of-town retail park or shopping centre.
Independent businesses are critical to this vision. It is not
only their products and services that people visit them for,
but also their warm welcome, knowledge and customer
service.
The town has a long and proud tradition of independent
businesses that starts with our market - described by Coun Kate
Sarvent at the awards as ‘the beating heart of Chesterfield’. It
may have its origins in the 13th century, but the market is as
important as by to our future as it is to our past, proven by
Chesterfield Borough Council’s ambitious plans to develop the
spaces within the market.
Internet shopping has been a large factor in this as have our
increasingly busy lives. However, Chesterfield has all the raw
ingredients to create a thriving town centre of the future – a
multi-functional social centre.
They are about enjoyment, creativity, learning, socialising,
culture, health and wellbeing and democratic engagement
– a ‘21st century agora’ where people engage in the life of
their locality; independent businesses are key to this, as are
delivers on every level and,
importantly, for everybody.’
The Destination Chesterfield chair presents his
monthly update for Twist magazine readers
event spaces and town centre living.
Through annual campaigns like Love Chesterfield and the
town’s manufacturing and engineering sector celebration -
Made in Chesterfield, which takes place this month - we aim
not only to celebrate the sectors but also raise awareness of
the plethora of careers and opportunity available in them to
young people.
They are the future skilled workers of these sectors and key
to the businesses already here thriving but, having a ready
and skilled workforce will help us attract new investment to the
area.
Likewise, we must also ensure we create the environment that
young people want to live and grow their career. Investment is
happening throughout the borough to ensure this.
A sum of £26million alone is being spent enhancing the town
centre. Work has begun on improvements to the Market Place,
New Square, Corporation Street, Rykneld Square and Burlington
Street.
Together with the major refurbishment of Stephenson Memorial
Hall on Corporation Street and the reimaging of the market and
market squares we will have a town centre that delivers on
every level and, importantly, for everybody.
Young people in particular I hope, will see a future for
themselves on the high street as both shoppers, visitors and
entrepreneurs.
The £26million project is aptly named Revitalising the Heart of
Chesterfield’.
Looking around the room at the Love Chesterfield Awards -
seeing both the winners and finalists, I can say with confidence
that Chesterfield’s town centre has a very strong heartbeat
already.

Blackberries
Blackthorn
Elderberries
Autumn’s rich berry harvest
Animals and birds are gorging
themselves on berries right
now, fattening themselves up
in preparation for winter.
Prof Ian Rotherham explains
W
ITH our long, hot summer and
plenty of sunshine, this year has
undoubtedly been great for fruit and
berries. This is especially those
growing wild in hedgerows, along
woodland edges, and what we used to
call ‘waste ground’.
Common shrubs like brambles or
blackberries have been almost weighed
down with especially heavy fruit hanging on
every branch; a rich harvest for birds like
blackbirds and mammals such as wood mice.
By late summer, many animals and birds
are fattening up for the hardship of winter to
come. Rich pickings of fruit, berries, and nuts
in the countryside and gardens are
absolutely vital.
A number of readers have asked about the
lack of garden birds coming to feeders in
August through to October, but don’t worry,
this is entirely normal. During late summer
and into autumn things are in flux and having
bred, many garden birds gather in small
flocks to roam and forage in the local
countryside.
As nights get colder and the abundant
autumnal harvest has been consumed, at
least in part, the birds will return.
Some species have departed south for the
winter and warmer climates, soon to be
replaced by winter visiting migrants from the
north. The Arctic thrushes (redwings and
fieldfares) will soon be arriving, and finches
such as bramblings, redpolls, and siskins will
also be ranging across woods, park, hedges
and gardens.
The thrushes, including mistle thrush, song
thrush, and blackbirds, love the red berries
of hawthorn and rowan whereas the finches
18
Hawthorn
Rowan
and buntings feed on seeds of trees like
alder, birch and larch.
In the wildlife garden, planning ahead and
planting berry-bearing trees and shrubs
brings dividends of abundant free birdfood
to benefit the birds - and your pocket. What’s
more, some of these plants (honeysuckle for
instance) can be grown freely from cuttings
to provide fragrant blossoms throughout the
summer and then lots of autumn berries.
Other trees and shrubs are easily
propagated from berries, grown on, and then
planted out. St John’s worts (Hypericums) for
instance, can be pulled apart to provide root
cuttings that spread freely, and guelder rose
is another easy-to-grow shrub with gorgeous
berries.
For shorter-term results and quick birdfood,
then herbaceous plants like teasel are
great, and many flowering perennials like
garden knapweed are favourites with
goldfinches, greenfinches and titmice.
But don’t forget wild herbs that produce
winter berries, and these include the bright
red fruits of our wild arum lily, the cuckoo
flower or lords and ladies. This is easily
grown in gardens along with the more
spectacular Italian arum lily and has herbal
medical associations and rich folklore too.
With poisonous berries (at least to humans),
the plant is best left alone although the
toxins were once extracted and used to treat
a range of ailments.
The highly acrid berries are an irritant and
moreover cause swelling, burning, and
difficulty in breathing. Yet animals and birds
take them freely as a good source of food
and with no obvious signs of harm. The
berries are eaten and seeds dispersed along
hedgerows and woodland edge.
many twists and turns
Chesterfield is, of course, known for its 14th
century Crooked Spire – the steeple of St Mary
and All Saints. What caused the twisting is a
question asked by most visitors to the town. The
issue was one which preoccupied the writer of a
book on the town in 1882. He also revealed more
about how locals perceived the church at that
time… including fears that the structure would
topple over. Deborah Wain reveals more
I
N 1882, John Pendleton wrote about changes that had
taken place in Chesterfield in the preceding 50 years
as it grew from a hamlet into ‘modern’ Chesterfield
Born and educated in the town, Pendleton was a newspaper
correspondent with various titles in the region.
His account of streets and characters of the day give a flavour of
what life was like in the town at the time and was the basis for a
publication 100 years later called ‘Old and ‘New’ Chesterfield’.
Pendleton devoted much ink to the subject of the “eccentric”
Crooked Spire, pointing out its attraction to people from far and
near.
“Pilgrimages from out-of-the-way corners of the land, as well as
from crowded cities, are made to the Old Church; and attenuated
Americans, losing their superciliousness as they climb to the
tower, scratch their heads in perplexity, and are obliged to admit
that they have nothing like this wonderful steeple in their own
marvellous country.
“Like the leaning Tower of Pisa, it is one of the world's curiosities,
and it is dangerous to say anything in its disparagement to those
residing in the town, of which it is the greatest ornament.
“The steeple, with its grotesque ridges, and flecks of black, and
grey, and white, may be ugly to some eyes; but the inhabitants of
the old town are sensitive about this Crooked Steeple and see
beauty in its shape, although it may be an architectural singularity.”
Pendleton writes that attempts to account for the crookedness of
the steeple had by 1882 comprised of “legends, poetry, scientific
wisdom” and “bar-parlour oratory”, all had their pet theories about
the spire’s curious twist.
Astonishment
One less than flattering to women story asserted that “pretty and
virtuous women” were scarce in the town, prompting the spire to
bow in astonishment to a “lovely and good” bride.
Pendleton writes: “The legend was, no doubt, invented by some
crusty curmudgeon of a cynical bachelor, disappointed in love
because of his own selfishness; and is unworthy the notice, much
less the scorn, of the matron’s grace.”
Another tale involves the Devil settling on top of the steeple and,
reacting to incense wafted upwards by priests, shaking the spire
with an enormous sneeze!
An even more fanciful account involved the vulcan of the village
making a shoe for the Devil’s hoof which was so painful that on his
way back to Hell, the Devil kicked the spire,
Pendleton then debates various “common sense” theories before
concluding the weight of its lead tiles and the heat of the sun
caused the timber to warp.
According to Pendleton, in 1817 townsfolk became preoccupied
with the idea that the spire was going to fall – especially those
living on the upper side of St Mary’s Gate.
Pendleton writes: “Wise surveyors, full of practical experience and
daring, examined the structure. One firm asserted that if the
steeple was suffered to remain unsupported a few years longer, it
would probably break about the middle, and fall towards the south
or south-west.
“An expert from Mansfield maintained that it was in a most
dangerous condition, and advised that it should be taken down.
“Mr. E. W. Drury, of Sheffield, then inspected the steeple, which
he considered unsafe and dangerous, and, he added, that it would
be impossible to repair it, even at any expense, so as to ensure it
standing many years.
“The more nervous inhabitants became almost panic-stricken at
the thought of the approaching calamity. The churchyard was
forsaken, and none dared go within reach of the threatening spire.
“In 1818 a vestry meeting was called, and the crooked steeple
would have been doomed had not some of the more sensible
inhabitants protested strongly against its demolition.
“Confidence begot confidence - those who had been the most
eager to see the old spire taken down were now the most anxious
that it should remain up, and when Mr James Ward, of Sheffield,
reported that the foundation of the carpenters' work was so firm
that it impossible the steeple should fall until the base itself gave
way, everybody in the town was delighted, and the steeple’s life
was spared.”
Pendleton poetically concludes: “That was more than 60 years
since, and the steeple still survives.
“It is aged, but strong, like some vigorous old men we see about
us - old men who did not foolishly fritter away their strength in their
youth. It creaks sometimes, when the wind savagely assails it and
makes the door of the crow-hole clatter: it quivers when the bells
make gleesome riot, and crash out their sweet music; but the
steeple is in no immediate danger of collapse.
“It will most likely stand for years yet; but when it does decide to
vacate its lofty position may it fall gently!”
Even today, historians cannot agree on the real reason for the
appearance of the iconic spire. Of course, like all structures, it is
subject to rigorous safety legislation.
• An abridged version of Old and ‘New’ Chesterfield was published
in 1984 by Moss Valley Heritage Publications.
Football Trust
backs food and
warmth projects
Dear Twist,
I really enjoyed looking at the aerial photos in September’s
edition.
It took me a while to figure out what direction I was looking
at, but eventually got my bearings from recognising the
Bradbury Apartments (aka Bradbury Club) on Chatsworth
Road. This then enabled me to work back to Brampton and
find our house!
Martin Fielder, Brampton
Driven out of town
Dear Twist,
I live at Calow which is between Chesterfield and Bolsover.
For years, I have done the majority of my shopping in
Chesterfied town centre where I browse around the market
stalls and visit a coffee shop or restaurant for refreshment.
Sometimes I meet up with family or friends.
A few weeks ago, I stopped eating out during my trips into
town because it was costing too much to leave my car in the
car park for any length of time.
Now, I’m on the verge of giving Chesterfield town centre
shopping a miss altogether for the same reason - it costs me
£3 before I’ve even looked at a shop or market stall.
I will be taking my custom up the road to Bolsover where
there may not be the same number of outlets, but parking is
absolutely free. And I can sit back and enjoy a lunch there
without worrying about running up a large fee for my car.
Perhaps the council in Chesterfield should consider making
parking on quieter days of the week free of charge. It would
certainly be welcomed by myself.
Diane Pashley, Blacksmith Lane, Calow
Over-stretched services
Dear Twist,
I get tired of Pete Swallow banging on every month about
what a brilliant job Chesterfield is doing in the current
economic climate.
When he talks about new homes, I wonder has he talked to
GP practices already over-stretched, dentists, social services,
etc, facing the impact of more residents without any additional
infrastructure?
Does he ever walk around the town observing all the empty
shops and former council premises now sadly neglected?
Does he see the rubbish everywhere? I live in Loundsley
Green and for the first time in four years I saw one of the
council workers replacing the bin bags, but at the same time
picking up litter. Normally it is just left to volunteers when they
have the energy against the daily repetition of rubbish being
dropped.
Despite the fact we pay Council Tax, only the main roads are
cleaned, whilst all the verges alongside the majority of streets
are left with grass and weeds growing in them.
Far from being a progressive town, it is deteriorating rapidly.
EED Chesterfield Together has been launched by
Chesterfield FC Community Trust as a joint venture
with Chesterfield Locality Children’s Partnership. The aim
of the campaign is to support local food provisions.
Community manager, Jayne Bacon, outlined the new initiative,
explaining: “It’s about helping local families through what’s going to
be a difficult winter.
“Feed Chesterfield Together will raise funds to support existing
food provisions such as food banks and distribution units to help and
support vulnerable families in the town.
“We want to provide our support and help to feed the most
vulnerable this winter as it’s going to be a tough time for everyone.
“We’re delighted with how things have gone so far. We began with
a bucket collection at the last home match, raising £250 to begin
with, which is a great start.”
David Mills, chair of the LCP, is proud that Chesterfield schools and
pupils have come together to support this crucial initiative.
He said: “Schools have provided a platform for children and young
people to support the most vulnerable families in Chesterfield.
“This demonstrates the tremendous positive contribution children
and young people can make to their local community in a very
challenging time.”
Jayne spoke about the importance of the Trust being involved with
these sorts of projects.
“It’s absolutely vital for us,” she said. ”We are a community facility,
and we want to be here for the people of Chesterfield when they
most need help and support.
“It’s essential that we provide support to the most vulnerable in
Chesterfield and help them in any way we can.”
Jayne also revealed that a warm space in the HUB will be made
available for families over the winter. She said: “We will be opening
the HUB from 5-7.30pm, Monday to Friday, where the heating will be
on and we will provide books, magazines and board games.
“It’s a space for people to stay warm and safe. Some of the Feed
Chesterfield Together funds will be allocated to offering food and
drinks in the warm HUB via Chester’s Den cafe.
“We want people who use the warm HUB to feel welcome, have
fun, stay warm and have food available too. It’s vital for us to provide
these opportunities and we really want to provide a safe space for
families to make use of.
“It’s important that we open our doors. We are a community facility,
and we want to open that up for people to use. We’re hopeful this
will help a number of families.”
A GoFundMe page has been set-up for people who would like to
make a donation to help the project. To access this, visit
www.gofundme.com and search for ‘Feed Chesterfield Together’.
Breastfeeding group’s
town centre welcome
A
FREE and friendly breastfeeding support group
is being held at the University of Derby in
Chesterfield.
The drop-in sessions run on the first and third Thursday of the
month, from 10.30am – 12noon, at the St Helena campus.
Whether you are expecting a child, are new to parenting, or are
further down your parenting journey, everyone is welcome!
The group is led by experienced breastfeeding supporters, who
are trained and supervised by Breastfeeding Network
Derbyshire. They will provide non-judgemental support and
information for families attending the group. Free refreshments
will be provided, as well as a selection of toys to entertain little
ones. There is plenty of public parking available.
Alexandra Dilkes from Breastfeeding Network Derbyshire, said:
“It’s great that the Community Chesterfield project has enabled
us to work with the University of Derby in this way. It’s a
wonderful venue, centrally located and easy to get to.”
Jennifer Raschbauer, from Community Chesterfield, added: “I
am so glad that we were able to bring Breastfeeding Network
Derbyshire back to the University of Derby in Chesterfield. They
make such a big difference to parents – particularly in the early
days of being a parent. It’s thanks to the University that we have
been able to offer the group such a fantastic venue.”
Over the last two years, local volunteers from Breastfeeding
Network Derbyshire, known as Feeding Together Bolsover and
Chesterfield, haven’t let the pandemic stop them supporting
families They have been providing remote support and running
regular ‘Parent in the Park’ walks at Poolsbrook Country Park.
