CHESTERFIELD
Neighbourhood Watch
Scheme has received funding to
help keep late night workers
safe.
Derbyshire Police and Crime
Commissioner Angelique Foster
has awarded ten grants to local
NHW schemes as part of her plans
to improve community resilience
and utilise the skills and support of
residents,
Among the schemes to benefit is
Chesterfield Town Centre NHW
which has received £226.67 for
personal alarms for late night
workers.
The scheme was established to
better connect local shops and
staff with the Safer Neighbourhood
Team. This has improved
communication and ensures businesses can discuss any issues
that affect their businesses and employees with the force.
The funding has been allocated through the Commissioner's
2023-24 Neighbourhood Watch Support Fund and will support
her work to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime across
Derbyshire and Derby City's communities.
Applications have been managed and vetted by the
Commissioner's delivery partner, Derbyshire Neighbourhood
Watch Association Trust, to ensure they support the drive
to increase membership and visibility of NHW across the
county.
Successful schemes have received grants of up to £300 to fund
Next summer, representatives of the Volunteer
Centre will be invited to a Garden Party at
Buckingham Palace.
The charity’s CEO, Dave Radford, said:
“Obviously we are all tremendously proud of
what we have achieved. Our volunteers worked
so hard and they did so much during the
pandemic providing a much-needed shopping
service to individuals.
“The local communities would have struggled
without their fantastic help. However, it is so
much more than that, this isn’t something that is
handed out on a plate, it is an award that shines
a light on the fantastic work carried out by
volunteers and groups that make a big difference
in their communities. I think it will take some time
to wipe the smile off my face!”
Based at Knifesmithgate, Chesterfield, the Volunteer Centre
supports people into volunteering and runs befriending,
mentoring, and youth into volunteering projects. See pages 10-11.
Neighbourhood Watch support
A
Derbyshire Neighbourhood Watch board members Lynn Farrar and
Coun Kevin Miller with Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster
additional resources including street signs, crime reduction
postcards, bin stickers and newsletters.
Commissioner Angelique Foster said: "Neighbourhood Watch
has a valuable role to play in the fight against crime. By
establishing positive support networks in our communities and
reducing isolation, they are helping to build strong and resilient
communities that are more resistant to crime.
"I have prioritised the expansion of NHW and other voluntary
schemes in my Police and Crime Plan, recognising the
importance of partnership work to prevent crime. I am grateful for
their contribution and am pleased to support their continued
growth to ensure residents continue to feel safe."
The Destination Chesterfield chair presents his
monthly update for Twist magazine readers
A
S the calendar turns to January, a month often
associated with resolutions and fresh starts, I
thought it would be a good time to look at some of the
best ways we can support our wellbeing goals here in
Chesterfield.
Our town offers a unique blend of award-winning parks,
rejuvenating spas, vibrant businesses, and community facilities,
not to mention easy access to the stunning Peak District –
creating the perfect environment for a holistic approach to selfcare.
Queen’s Park, with its picturesque lake and gardens, offers a
tranquil space for gentle exercise. Alternatively, Holmebrook
Valley Park provides scenic walking trails surrounded by lush
greenery, encouraging visitors to reconnect with nature and reap
the benefits of the great outdoors.
In total, seven parks and open spaces in Chesterfield hold
internationally-recognised Green Flag status, providing the ideal
backdrop for a refreshing start to the year. If you’re unsure
where to start, Active Derbyshire has some great advice on their
website, makingourmove.org.uk.
And if that isn’t enough, the iconic Peak District is just a
short journey away, providing endless opportunities for
outdoor activities.
‘We all know how much Chesterfield takes
pride in its community spirit, reflected in the
diverse range of events coming up in 2024’
Whether you’re on foot or bicycle, breathing in the crisp
January air amid the stunning landscapes can be a
transformative experience, rejuvenating both body and mind.
I am pleased to see that planning permission is now being
sought for the Gateway @PEAK development, which will further
connect our town to the Peak District National Park.
If you’re looking to escape the chill, maybe it is worth indulging
in one of the many spa experiences in Chesterfield. Local hotels
such as Ringwood Hall or DoubleTree by Hilton provide a range
of wellness treatments, allowing you to unwind and pamper
yourself.
Our area is also home to businesses such as The Body Health
Centre, Therapy and Lifestyle Clinic, and 360 Wellbeing Centre,
all of which provide quality services to support our health.
In addition, I was delighted to see Chesterfield Royal Hospital
open a new wellbeing centre for its staff last year. I’m sure it will
be a great asset for thousands of hard-working NHS staff in the
coming years.
We all know how much Chesterfield takes pride in its
community spirit, reflected in the diverse range of events coming
up in 2024.
Getting out and socialising certainly helps to boost our sense of
belonging, so I’m delighted to see the 1940s Market and Peddler
Market returning this Spring, along with Chesterfield Pride, Eat in
the Park and the BRM Solicitors Festival of Cricket all confirmed
for the Summer.
Make sure you find out more on the Destination Chesterfield
website, www.chesterfield.co.uk and get them into your calendar!
On behalf of Destination Chesterfield, I would like to wish
everyone in our town a healthy and prosperous year ahead.
New roof attracts admiring glances
WHEN Lee Bargh needed
some fairly major work
doing to the roof of his
family’s Chesterfield home,
he simply couldn’t find
anyone able to take on all
the tasks involved... until he
opened the pages of Twist.
Apprenticeship accolade
and Olivia Thompson.
Award-winning Dalton Roofing, which specialises in roof
building and maintenance, has scooped a new accolade
recognising its work with apprentices.
The Chesterfield business was awarded SME Employer of
the Year at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire
Apprenticeship Awards 2023.
Delighted owner Phil Dalton, MIoR, commented: “Words
can’t explain how happy we are!
“A lot of time, effort, support and mentoring is put into our
apprentices; they will work alongside some great roofers and
also get support from our Site Manager, Paul Stephenson.”
DALTON ROOFING
647 Sheffield Road, Chesterfield, S41 9ED
CHESTERFIELD couple John and Lynn have lived in their
detached bungalow for almost 30 years but they have never
felt quite as snug as they do right now.
The reason? They have just experienced a roof transformation
carried out by local family-run business Dalton Roofing.
Said John: “We would definitely recommend them. The lads
working on our roof were brilliant, so hard working and
professional and very pleasant to have around.”
Roofing Champion
Phil Dalton, MIoR, gets an unrivalled
view of Chesterfield rooftops during
a recent Chesterfield Champions visit
to the town’s famous Crooked Spire
WHEN Dalton Roofing managing director Phil Dalton relocated
his company from Sheffield to north Derbyshire, he was
determined to see it become a respected thread in the tapestry
of local life.
One thing which instantly appealed to him was the Destination
Chesterfield organisation, so he signed up his company as one
of the Chesterfield Champions, a group of more than 200
businesses that are proud to showcase the town and north
Derbyshire in general as a destination to live, work, visit and
invest.
Phil has become an active Destination Chesterfield supporter,
attending many of their events, and this past month he was
named as the group’s ‘Champion of the Week’.
Hospice’s Virtual Ward earns praise
A local man has told how a new service
at Ashgate Hospice allowed his wife of
54 years to die at home in peace. Now
rugby players have raised money to
support the scheme
AROLE Lowry was one of the first patients to
access Ashgate Hospice’s Virtual Ward which
offers safe and convenient palliative care in
the home, rather than at a hospital or the
C
hospice.
The former English teacher, from Dronfield, had
been diagnosed with cancer during the Covid-19
lockdown in 2020.
Despite Carole’s determination to undergo
numerous treatments, the disease spread
aggressively to other parts of her body, and she sadly
died earlier this year under the care of the hospice’s
Virtual Ward team, aged 79.
Husband, Peter Lowry, 78, said: “The hospice’s Virtual Ward
meant my wife Carole died in the home she loved with her
husband by her side.”
He praised the “kindness and dedication” of nurses Amanda
Hall and Sophie Dudley, who lead the service, as well as other
staff who cared for his family during the most difficult time in their
lives.
Peter, a former deputy headteacher, continued: “Carole had
been diagnosed with terminal cancer and it reached the stage
where no further treatment was possible.
“Without hesitation she came to the decision that at the end of
her life she wanted to be at home; I felt relieved knowing that
could now be achieved.
“I know that when Carole died she was peaceful, pain free and
in the place that she wanted to be.
“That was because of the hospice’s Virtual Ward and its
visionary approach to home-based hospice care.
“We felt that the hospice always had time for us. The support,
which sometimes was just praise for the way we were handling
the difficult situation– whether it was a hug, a phone call or a visit
- made all the difference.
The couple, who met whilst training to be teachers in Sheffield
in the late 1960s, were sports fanatics, especially track and field
athletics, and travelled the world to such places as Berlin,
Stockholm, Paris, Rome, Moscow, and Doha to watch major
events.
Peter said Carole was “incredibly brave” and did “everything
possible” to overcome the disease. But when her condition
deteriorated and she struggled with her symptoms, she went on
to receive ward-equivalent care in her own home.
Specialist nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and
physios all worked together to assess and support her, while
consultants were also on hand for advice and support.
Carole was one of the first patients to access the Virtual Ward
service before she died in March, weeks after the initiative had
been launched by the hospice.
Peter hopes the service will be available for an increasing
number of patients in the future.
He added: “I received regular phone calls, visits and Carole's
health was discussed in a very comforting but professional and
detailed manner.
“Nothing was too much trouble even when medication and
equipment needed changing. Even prescriptions were ordered
without the need for me to contact my GP.
“What pleased me tremendously was I felt as though it wasn’t
just Carole being supported, but I was being thought of as well –
8
Peter Lowry and his late wife Carole
it was 24-hour care for me and Carole.
“Even after her death, contact from Ashgate continued and I
knew that support was still there for the family
“I felt very lucky to have had this fantastic resource at home for
us and hope that over time it can be developed further so that
many more people can benefit.”
Carole and Peter have two sons and three grandchildren.
Since its launch, Ashgate Hospice’s Virtual Ward team have
worked alongside the Community Nursing Specialists and wider
multi-disciplinary team to allow for well over 100 patients to
remain at home with complex needs.
EANWHILE, a Pink Sock Day at Dronfield Rugby Club
M in aid of the Virtual Ward raised more than £1,000.
The event was co-ordinated by Peter, who is a former press
secretary at the club.
His and Carole’s son, Matt, played for the club from the age of
eight through to the 1st XV and the couple enjoyed being on the
touchline to cheer the teams on.
When Peter approached the club’s committee about the fund
raising event, it was more than happy to get involved as part of
its help in the community philosophy.
For their match against Morley, Dronfield’s first team players
sported pink socks while Morley players donned pink armbands,
and spectators from both sides were also encouraged to wear
something pink.
Peter added: “Our grandchildren baked and sold pink cookies
and Ollie from the club’s Minis section and his mum made
pink loom bracelets These were sold in the clubhouse by
Ollie and his friends Charlie, Gabe, Allie and Jack, from the
junior section of the club.”
Peter said it was a “fantastic day” despite wet weather.
“The club and everyone there really got behind the event and
have been unbelievably generous. If Carole were here, she
would have been amazed by the response.”
The family have bought a digital scoreboard for the club in
Carole’s memory .
The game itself proved to be a close affair, 17-10, with Dronfield
scoring the winning try towards the end of the match.
Peter hopes the club will now organise a fund-raising day each
season in the future with a different charity chosen each year.
Ashgate Hospice’s second Go Pink for Ashgate this autumn saw
dozens of supporters get involved, helping to raise more than
£15,000 towards end of life care.
I
WOULD like to wish a Happy New Year to all Twist readers and
hope that you are enjoying a wonderful Christmas.
The winter months have brought challenging weather, but also shown
Chesterfield’s community spirit at its best.
Storm Babet hit Chesterfield hard, with one tragic death and as many
as 500 families flooded out of their homes.
The devastation and damage to businesses and homes due to the
floods was absolutely tragic, but it was heart-warming to see how our
community came together to support each other in its time of need.
Chesterfield people and businesses gave food, bedding,
accommodation and transport, in a wonderful display of compassion and
solidarity.
I had the honour of joining the Lifehouse Church on Chatsworth Road
in setting up the Chesterfield Flood Victims Appeal which has raised
almost £100,000 for flood victims.
As your local MP, I extend my heart-felt gratitude to all of the volunteers
and organisations that worked throughout that night and beyond, to
support their fellow Chesterfield residents.
I was down at the rescue centre on the night and out visiting all the
flooded areas on the Saturday and was blown away by the way that the
community and public servants reacted to try and get areas flooded
back on their feet.
A community
garden project
at Edinburgh
Road Park
The response from people across the town was another example of
Chesterfield’s amazing community spirit – something that we also saw
during the pandemic.
In Chesterfield, people look out for their neighbours, care about the
local community and want the town to prosper.
We also saw this community spirit on December 3rd, when the Spireites
were due to play Leyton Orient in the FA Cup but a blanket of thick
snow on the pitch meant the game looked likely to be called off.
Dozens of residents raced down to the ground in the freezing weather
and worked together to shovel the snow off the pitch. The game was
able to go ahead, and we saw a sensational win that means the Spireites
deservedly march into Round Three for the third consecutive year.
Another example of our town standing by those in need is the success
of Chesterfield & NE Derbyshire Volunteer Centre, run by Dave Radford
and his hardworking team, who bring together volunteers from across
Chesterfield to help with different projects, such as the Elderfriends, a
befriending service aimed at helping lonely and socially isolated people.
I visited Dave and his team recently to celebrate them winning the
‘King’s Award for Voluntary Service’, a huge achievement and source of
pride for the town.
The stories I heard from the team of local altruism was truly inspiring –
countless volunteers from across the town giving up their time to help
others.
The Volunteer Centre has been a beacon of compassion and
commitment, tirelessly working to uplift those in need and their work
underscores the vital role that volunteering plays in fostering and
sustaining our community spirit.

County’s
gritting plans
for local roads
C
HESTERFIELD residents can keep up-tospeed
on responses to snowy and icy
conditions on the county’s roads.
During the winter period, Derbyshire County
Council provides 24-hour cover using a fleet of
specialist salting and other vehicles.
Teams grit and clear snow and ice from around half
the adopted roads and pavements in Derbyshire,
except for motorways and trunk roads, which are
dealt with by National Highways, and roads in Derby,
which are the city council's responsibility.
Regular gritting routes are split into two categories
− primary and secondary.
Primary routes, which cover around 1,000 miles of
road, are treated during the day and night and 'pretreated'
before bad weather hits. Gritting continues
24 hours a day if necessary.
Secondary routes, which cover around 550 miles of
road, are generally only treated in the day with the
first run being completed by mid-morning.
In heavy snow and freezing conditions, the main focus is on
keeping primary and secondary routes open.
The council also works with farmers and external contractors to
Discover the Wild
Peak with new
challenge routes
D
ERBYSHIRE Wildlife Trust has launched three new
walking or running routes.
The Wild Peak Rounds connect wild spaces across the Peak
District to create a year-round challenge for walkers and
runners.
They take in some of the most stunning scenery in the Peak
District, connecting up to 16 of the trust’s nature reserves.
There are three round routes which start from Bakewell – of
120km, 55km and 15km.
The routes highlight how isolated and fragmented some of
the nature reserves are but give an opportunity to raise
awareness and enable wildlife corridors to be developed to
better link up biodiverse gems.
The Rounds are not waymarked between the reserves and
there is no fixed route to follow, leaving the route choice
entirely up to walkers or runners.
Good navigation skills, understanding and preparedness of
the grounds and changeable weather conditions are essential,
stresses the trust.
Equally there are no manned checkpoints along any of the
routes, so people must take enough provisions and, or know
where to get supplies from along their route.
Pros and cons of online divorce
We know that the speed and convenience
of online divorce is appealing but when
is it appropriate and when is it not?
Here, Kelly Parks, Head of Family Law at
Banner Jones Solicitors, explains:
What is online divorce?
Launched in May 2018, the online divorce platform allows
members of the public to be able to petition for a divorce
themselves online on the government website.
You will be guided through a series of questions and will be
asked to upload several documents.
The court fee is currently £593 and is paid online when the
application is made.
When is online divorce appropriate?
The online divorce process is worth considering if you have
no difficulty completing forms online, and understand the
process and questions asked of you on the website.
We often advise clients to access the website first to see if
they would feel comfortable doing this themselves.
What value can solicitors add to a divorce?
Solicitors can advise and assist on the divorce process and
prepare the application for you.
It should be noted that the online divorce process does not
include finalising financial or child arrangements.
We would advise that obtaining legal advice about these is
essential.
Kelly Parks: ‘It
should be noted
that the online
divorce process
does not include
finalising financial
or child
arrangements’
A financial remedy
order is needed to
ensure you have a
clean break. You
need advice as to
what you are entitled
to and what would
be a fair financial
settlement.
If you have children
and cannot agree
arrangements, you may also need legal advice on that issue.
Having a solicitor providing legal advice ensures that you are
supported throughout the process which can help to reduce
the emotional burden.
A solicitor can also ensure that the forms are completed
correctly so that there are no delays or increased costs
incurred by errors made on the forms.
New Year sees birds on
An inquisitive jackdaw
(Picture: Olivia Firth)
Birds large and small have migration on their
minds right now. Prof Ian Rotherham explains
C
HILLY weather through late November
and into December has shaken up the
mix in our local birdlife. My wildlife garden
has been full of small birds such as titmice
and finches, but also numbers of magpies,
jackdaws, and carrion crows.
I will return to these species shortly. However,
recent weeks have seen longer-distance
migrations with skeins of pink-footed geese
passing, in some cases, quite low, over our
region.
In the darkness of around 11pm for instance,
I heard a flock low over a local river, perhaps
following the moonlit track of the water and
maybe the railway line as a guide.
More locally, the Canada geese fly over my
garden as they honk loudly and head for the
nearby park ponds. A group of maybe eight or
nine golden plovers, a relative of the lapwing or
peewit, were in a close-knit group as they went
overhead around sunset, their characteristic single call very
distinctive. This was the first time I had heard them from the
garden.
20
Meadow pippit
Even less obvious are birds undergoing what is termed ‘visible
migration’. This phenomenon has been studied in some detail in
our region.
Essentially, in the autumn, birds from more
northerly parts of Britain and across from
continental Europe, are heading southwards and
west towards milder weather and easier
pickings.
These birds often fly at 500-1,000ft in altitude,
and in the lowlands of say Doncaster are not
easily seen. However, as they follow the
Pennines south and then cross the higher
ground over Sheffield and north Derbyshire, they
can be at about ground level, so where I live,
this is a little over 500ft.
Numbers recorded are sometimes very large
indeed, with hundreds of birds such as the
meadow pipit. This is a denizen of open moors
and grassland areas and is a birdwatcher’s ‘LBJ’
ie, a ‘little brown job’. They are actually rather
pretty when seen close up, but perhaps a little
understated!
Other common species seen on these
migrations include wood pigeons in vast numbers
along with smaller birds like wagtails and some of the buntings.
Most of this happens in the early morning and so you do need to
be an early bird to spot them.

favoured locations and then, in the late afternoon, they head off to
major roosting sites. These overnight roosts are mostly on lakes
and reservoirs.
However, we also witness growing numbers of the ‘corvids’ or
crow family grouping noisily together from autumn into winter.
Again, like the gulls, these birds will gather on open grasslands
such as in parks, before departing to their overnight locations.
This may be quite local or sometimes at huge roosts of 10,000
birds or more which can be several miles away.
We are seeing changes though, and whilst jackdaws and carrion
crows have increased, one of our favourite members of the crow
family, the rook, has plummeted in numbers. This change may be a
result of altered farming patterns and perhaps less autumn
ploughing of arable land.
Twist’s Olivia Firth
is soon into the
dance routine
Proprietor and
instructor Katy
Robinson
Step this way for fun and fitness
Stepping onto the dancefloor earlier than
most others this Christmas and New Year
was Twist magazine’s Olivia Firth
I
T had been several years since I last attended a dance
class, so I was slightly apprehensive before taking up an
invitation to join in a session with a local Katy Robinson On
Broadway group.
However, as soon as I walked into the studio, I was greeted by
smiley faces. Seeing how much teacher Katy and her dance
students were enjoying themselves made me feel very welcome
and relaxed.
So I picked up my top hat and was ready to dance!
We were taught a routine step by step to ‘If My Friends Could
See Me Now’ from the musical Sweet Charity and, being the
day’s only newcomer, I was
supported with lots of
encouragement as we pieced
together a fun set of movements.
The dance moves were
carefully broken down into
segments to make them simple
to pick up. The steps were easy
and straightforward but you
could make them more complex
if you so wished.
There was no judgement from
anyone in the studio and I
immediately knew I was in a safe
and welcoming environment.
The focus of Katy’s classes is
24
100 per cent on having fun and making new friends while being
active to music from the charts and musicals - and no-one cares
if you don’t follow the day’s routine to perfection.
I could tell everyone in the class - Katy included - was enjoying
themselves.
Women travel from as far afield as Rotherham and Worksop to
attend Katy’s sessions and others join in online from Somerset,
Scotland and beyond.
I was told: “It’s the one thing that makes me get up in the
morning... I get fit without realising it... It helps me escape the
worries of life at home and work... There is a great sense of
achievement.”
Some of the women had made such good friends that they
regularly meet up outside of classes.
Katy’s classes offer different packages, depending on how
many sessions you would like to attend per month. There is also
access to unlimited online classes and pre-recorded sessions if
you wish to practise at home.
More than 20 classes are held
Monday to Saturday each week
and the local venues are St
John’s Church Hall, Walton, and
St Thomas Centre, Chatsworth
Road. No dance experience is
required and if you’re not sure,
you can book an initial trial class.
I’ll bet you will be back for
more... and with a smile on your
face!
Helping hand for
house renovators
A Bradway couple carrying out a full renovation of a
1930s detached home have finally moved in after
two years’ work.
And a project they are particularly thrilled with are
their bespoke bedroom wardrobes, provided and
installed by the experts at Supafit.
Client Emily Kay said she and partner Dan needed
plenty of guidance as they are new to the property
world and setting up their first home together.
Supafit designer Jenna was ready to help with
plenty of ideas for both the style of the wardrobes
and the interior configuration.
Emily said: “A couple of people I know have had
wardrobes from Supafit so we popped to the
showroom for a look around and booked for Jenna
to come out and measure up.
“She showed us various catalogues and different
options before putting the quote together.”
After Emily and Dan decided to go ahead with the
order, the products were ready a little ahead of
when they could be installed, due to work not being
finished on the bedroom’s en-suite. However it was
no problem for Supafit to hold on to the items until
convenient.
When the installation was arranged, all of the work
was completed within a day to the exacting standard
Supafit is renowned for.
Emily and Dan chose a Palmero classic-style door
in Matt Cashmere and finished with a brushed nickel
knob. The frontage cleverly conceals a television.
Emily said: “We are new to all of this, and Jenna
was so helpful and guided us through every step of
the process. The wardrobes look beautiful with
clean lines. With the hidden TV, we wouldn’t have
known about that, so again
Jenna helped us.
“We would 100 per cent
use Supafit again – they are
really professional.”
ITH the Christmas and New Year
celebrations upon us, and Spring
warmth and light still some time away,
January is many people's least favourite time
of the year.
Let us try and remedy that by seeking out the
planet Jupiter, known to astrologers as "the
bringer of joy". When classical composer Gustav
Holst wrote his Planets Suite in the 1910s, his
"Jupiter, The Bringer Of Jollity" was very
intentionally the most uplifting and buoyant of the
pieces.
Due to its obvious brightness in the sky, Jupiter
has been known since ancient times, and the
earliest records of observing it go all the way
back to the Babylonians in at least 700BC.
By the time of the ancient Romans a little later in
history, they had named the bright object in
honour of their sky god 'Jove'. Even today, when
we describe something joyous or merry as 'Jovial'
then we are literally saying that it is "of Jupiter" or
"of Jove".
Jupiter is an excellent target this Winter for a
couple of reasons: firstly due to its appearance at
a reasonable time of the evening and night, and
secondly due to its position being far away from
anything else of comparable brightness, making it
very simple to pick out in its area of the sky.
Jupiter is currently located in Aries, one of the
zodiac constellations, but we are going to use a much simpler
trick to find it using Polaris. For this trick to work, we'll be doing
our observing between 6-8pm. Check the end of this article for
the perfect time to make this trick work, depending when in
January you try it.
Firstly use The Plough to locate Polaris the Pole Star and find
North, and also take note of the Pole Star's approximate height
above the horizon.
If we're doing this at the correct time, then Jupiter will be
located approximately due-south, and at approximately the same
height above the horizon as Polaris is!
Simply turn around from North to face South instead, check the
sky at the same height at Polaris, and Jupiter should be the
brightest, most obvious object
in this area of the sky.
If you're observing earlier
than the suggested time, then
Jupiter will be lower in the sky,
Chesterfield astronomer
Phil Unsworth (above)
says the New Year
brings an opportunity
for all of us to enjoy
studying Jupiter. You
can contact Phil at
spire.astronomy
@gmail.com or visit
www.darkskytelescope
hire.co.uk
Images: NASA Jet Propulsion Lab JPL
Jovial month for stargazers
W
and closer to the south-east. Later than the
suggested time and Jupiter will have travelled
into the south-west or even west, always getting
lower and lower in the sky.
Once you've found Jupiter for the first time, try
to spot it at different hours, in other parts of the
sky. If you're observing during the couple of
hours between regular sunset and astronomical
sunset, then Jupiter will be one of the only
targets visible at all, near the eastern horizon.
During the later evening and night, Jupiter
travels through the southern sky and will
eventually set in the west sometime between 1-
2am.
If you happen to own even a modest telescope
or a set of birdwatching binoculars, then Jupiter
is a great target, with plenty of spectacular
features.
Take the time to stabilise your stance and for
your eyes to adjust properly to the darkness,
then focus on the planet. You might be able to
pick out the contrasting stripes, which are
various cloud belts within Jupiter's atmosphere,
or perhaps the famous 'Great Red Spot', which is
a colossal tornado-style storm.
Interestingly we still don't have a definite
answer as to what generates the red colouration
of the storm. You may also be able to spot up to
four bright points surrounding Jupiter. These are
the Io, Callisto, Ganymede and Europa, the four Galilean
Moons, which are too faint and distant to be spotted with the
naked eye.
In the early-1600s, Galileo made enough improvements to
telescopes of the era to reveal the moons. January 7th, 1610,
witnessed his first written records of spotting these new objects.
The discovery of the four moons was the first proof that there
were faint objects out there, unseen by the naked eye, but
findable with the newly-powerful telescopes, just waiting to be
revealed.
Astronomers today continue the work that Galileo began,
improving telescope technology, and discovering smaller and
fainter moons. Last February, three more newly-found moons
• In early January, Jupiter will be due-south at about 7.30pm.
• In mid-January, Jupiter will be due-south at about 7pm.
• In late January, Jupiter will be due-south at about 6.30pm.
were announced, and as of
the end of 2023, Jupiter has
an official count of 95 moons.
Will 2024 see 'The Bringer Of
Joy' pass 100?

Politically correct in my slippers
A fan of particular celebrities Petula Clark,
Perry Como, Patsy Cline and even Peter
Crouch, our public citizen Dafydd Manton
provides completely this personally configured,
proof checked, politely courteous, paper
communication for you to peruse carefully.
Are you past caring?
O
NLY this very morning, I had reason to speak to our
dear editor. It took some time, since the string had
come adrift from the baked bean tin at the office.
However, we eventually managed to make contact, only for
him to upbraid me severely because I had used a semi-colon
where it should have a colon, and he threatened to withdraw my
fee for the article.
Obviously, I grovelled a bit - well, a lot, really - as that £1.73
might come in useful. We’re planning on an exotic holiday this
year, an extensive 14-hour walking tour of Whittington Moor,
Stonegravels, Sheepbridge and possibly Queen’s Park.
Before you worry about the
difficulties of catering, we take a
sandwich between us, and there are
plenty of water-butts, puddles,
streams and gutters we can dip our
WW2 enamelled cup in to.
Creaking
In any event, returning to my giving
Sir a severe listening to, I rose,
creaking, from my custom-made,
bespoke, grovelling cushion, which
was made to protect one’s trou, as I
believe you call them up here, and
given that they were a princely £9
14 shillings and thruppence in 1970,
they’ve lasted pretty well. A bit
of shininess about the seat, of
course, but then, they are made of
corduroy.
I believe the colour was navy blue,
but they are now a very fashionable
and head-turning grey Also, buttons
rather than a zip are now considered
very de rigeur.
Sorry, where did we get to? Oh yes,
following all the above, the
conversation fell to the PC brigade, a
breed for which both His Nibs and I
have a healthy contempt. (Please note, at the beginning of this
magazine is a thingy stating that opinions aired are mine and do
not necessarily reflect those of the editor. We share an airing
cupboard on this one!)
Let me illustrate. Not that many years ago, I wrote an article
covering this particular subject, but for another editor.
I thought, just to be very trendy, with-it, down wid da kids
and up-to-the-moment, I would attempt to be a bit
non-PC.
It was a great article, some 1,000 words, but after editing came
out as “Once upon a time there were three…..” and ended with
the disclaimer that, thus far, nobody has ever lived happily ever
after, despite claims to the contrary by such people as Snow
32
Dafydd Manton: ‘Is it possible to be politically
correct in the face of such an image? Of course
it isn’t, and don’t go kidding yourself’
White, Cinderella (class-ridden), Ali Baba (hairdresserist?),
Aladdin (lampist), numbers of highly improbable animals such as
bears, lions, (with or without courage), monkeys and polar bears,
old women living in shoes (ageist, elitist and cobblerist), couples
wandering up and down hills (just plain stupid, going up hill for
water when the water table is always at a lower point, i.e. in the
valley), Sleeping Beauty (who said she was beautiful? That’s a
pretty subjective assessment, and would YOU want to knock
around with some woman who’s been in kip, publicly, for
decades) and finally Rumpelstiltskin (everythingist.) No point in
nit-picking. Non-PC.
Question
What, exactly, is the abbreviation PC for? Good question. Ask
any Privy Councillor, Parish Councillor, Police Constable, Past
Commander or Prince Consort what the Per Centage is.
Ask him by Post Card, or Personal Computer, assuming that
your Printed Circuits are in order. Don’t just ask him about PC,
he might think you are enquring about his personal care, or
toiletries, which is not just not PC, but rude.
Nor you would you want him to wonder if you are making
improper suggestions about the Petty Cash, which is just Plain
Cheeky. Probably best not to
mention the Pony Club, Post Cards,
Perry Como, Petula Clarke or Phil
Collins. I’m not sure about Pierre
Cardin.
Political correctness is often not
how we perceive others but how we
look at ourselves. Eh? To elucidate,
(which proves that I know at least
one posh word) my musical tastes
run very much to Fleetwood Mac,
Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Mott
the Hoople, Queen, Jethro Tull and
The Who. It would, of course, be folly
in an article like this, not to mention
The Beatles. There, that’s got that
out of the way.
Rocker
So, a bit of an ancient rocker, since
the next birthday is the old
threescore and ten. And Lo! It came
to pass that there I was, at home,
playing something very loud by Led
Zeppelin, rockin’ away, when I
chanced to take a mental look at
myself. Mostly grey hair, and
what there is is pretty short, a
multiplicity of chins, baggy old
blue jeans, Welsh rugby shirt, and.... slippers! All whilst cutting
little slits in the bottoms of the Brussels’ Sprouts I’d just
peeled.
Is it possible to be politically correct in the face of such an
image? Of course it isn’t, and don’t go kidding yourself. You
might just as well suggest that Ozzy Osbourne entertains
himself before a concert by knitting baby bootees. Just forget
about it!
If you wish to find out more about PC, please go to
acronyms.thefreedictionary.com Good luck!
Please note that any characters mentioned in this article are
entirely fictitious and are only a figleaf of the writer’s
imagination. Except him and the editor.
