H
UGE congratulations to everyone connected with
Chesterfield FC - players, coaching staff,
management, directors and, of course, supporters.
This season’s achievements have been nothing short of
remarkable and have even made up for the Wembley
heartache of a year ago.
The Spireites return to the Football League with a talented
squad and a fanbase which has not been as strong and
enthusiastic for decades.
Planning for the 2024/25 season began many weeks ago and
although Division Two will pose a more serious challenge, don’t
be surprised to see the Spireites ranked as one of the
favourites for another promotion campaign.
That will be the aim of everyone at the SMH Group Stadium, but
the number one goal for the club must surely be to never ever
find itself sucked into the National League again. We’ve had
quite enough of it!
The past six seasons have for much of the time been a
chastening experience and having to Google the names of
opponents to discover where their tiny grounds are based has
been a grim reality for supporters.
Now instead of visiting the likes of Meadowbank (Dorking
Wanderers), Mill Farm (AFC Fylde) and Silverlake (Eastleigh),
supporters can make plans for trips to more acceptable
surroundings offered by the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Swindon
Town, MK Dons, Bradford City and - dare we suggest it -
Mansfield Town?
So enjoy your summer, Spireites, and return in good voice for
the start of the new season on August 10th. See you there!
We know...
Going through separation can be a
challenging time. Our team are here
to guide you, and can offer a
approach every step of the way.
The Destination Chesterfield chair presents his
monthly update for Twist magazine readers
A
S the warmth of summer draws near, it's time to start
planning some exciting adventures for your family.
Whilst I can’t promise the sun will be shining all the time, I
am certain there is lots of fun to be had in our town.
This month sees the fourth instalment of the iconic Peddler
Market in Chesterfield town centre on the 17th and 18th
May.
I’m delighted that this great event has made itself right at
home in New Square. If you’ve not been yet, make sure you
head along and try some delicious food and drink.
At the March event, visitors got their hands on cookies,
cheesecakes, pizza, Korean food and much more.
18th May will also see the Chesterfield Craft and Makers
Market arriving back in town, with plenty of opportunities for
you to pick up unique products and gifts from local
independents.
‘Chesterfield is bursting with
excitement and adventure for
families of all shapes and sizes’
I would also highly recommend a leisurely journey along the
picturesque Chesterfield Canal, as the special Canal Cruises
are back in full swing. Gather the family and hop aboard for a
relaxing cruise through stunning scenery.
Look out for the Fish and Chips Special cruises too, taking
place on selected dates – a perfect setting for a meal with
family or friends.
We can’t talk about the wonderful events happening this May
without mentioning the fabulous Rail Ale Festival at Barrow Hill
Roundhouse.
The annual celebration will give you or a loved one the
chance to discover a vast array of real ales, craft beers, and
refreshing beverages to sample.
The event always promises some fantastic entertainment, too.
Rock music fans will love pumping their fists and stamping their
feet to a tribute to the world-famous AC/DC at the ‘Rail Ale
Rock Night’ on Thursday, 16th May.
My final pick for the month is one for families who love the
great outdoors. Lace up your walking shoes and join in the fun
at the Chesterfield Area Walking Festival.
Choose from a variety of guided walks from the 11th-19th May,
catering to all ages and abilities, ranging from leisurely strolls
to more challenging hikes.
Chesterfield is bursting with excitement and adventure for
families of all shapes and sizes. So, mark your calendars, pack
a picnic, and get ready to create unforgettable memories
together at these fabulous events.
I’m looking forward to keeping you updated on all the
T
HE Dalton Roofing team are well used to helping
businesses and homeowners get their property back in
order in the wake of high winds and storms.
In Chesterfield they have recently been carrying out projects at
United Cast Bar Ltd, one of the town’s major employers, which
was devastated by October’s floods.
One of Europe’s largest continuous cast iron bar foundries, its
production came to a halt when the floodwaters engulfed the
premises at Spital.
When major repair and restoration work began, the company
called in Dalton Roofing - a fellow ‘Chesterfield Champion’ - to
install new roofing on their laboratories and also repair their
huge roof’s centre gutters with fibre-glass.
Four members of the Dalton Roofing team were involved in the
project which required one of the Sheepbridge-based company’s
impressive cherry-picker vehicles to help with access to the
rooftop.
Said company founder Phil Dalton, MIoR: “Because of climate
change, we find ourselves taking on many different tasks than
we used to. The recent Storm Kathleen led to our phones ringing
for hours.
“It is really sad when we hear stories of how people have had
their homes and businesses affected by such weather, but it is
also the time when we can step forward and show just what we
can do.
“In the case of United Cast Bar Ltd, they contacted us because
we are both members of the Destination Chesterfield
‘Champions’ organisation and they like doing business with other
local firms.
“We were delighted to be able to help them.”
Not all tasks facing Dalton Roofing are on such a large scale.
The family-run company now has 15 teams dealing with all
aspects of roofing work from homeowners and businesses.
Teenager Ted witnessed
The widow of a Chesterfield community volunteer has
received a medal for his involvement in nuclear weapons
testing on Christmas Island. Deborah Wain reports
Ted Cockbaine pictured on Christmas
Island and, main picture, one of the
explosions of the kind he witnessed
T
ED Cockbaine was enlisted for National Service in the
RAF aged 18 and spent nine months working at a
radar station on the island, in the Pacific Ocean.
He witnessed five nuclear explosions; two involved atomic
weapons, suspended from balloons, and three were Hydrogen
bombs dropped by Valiant bombers.
Ted, who sadly died in 2021, wrote an account in 1983 of what it
felt like to experience the horror of a nuclear blast.
His time on Christmas Island had such an effect on him that, not
long after returning home, he joined the Campaign for Nuclear
Disarmament and in 1960 took part in one of the anti-nuclear
Aldermaston Marches.
The Grapple H-bomb nuclear test series was an attempt to
demonstrate that Britain had the technology to influence the
Cold War, after the atomic bomb was invented by US physicist
Robert Oppenheimer.
Hydrogen bombs were much more powerful than atomic
bombs.
Veterans and campaigners have spent decades seeking
recognition for their service during Britain's nuclear test
programme between 1952 and 1967.
Last autumn, The Nuclear Test Medal began being issued and
Ted’s widow, Ann, encouraged by the couple’s son, applied for
the medal.
Ted grew up in Oxford and did the first part of his National
Service at RAF Bempton, in
the East Riding of Yorkshire.
In 1958 he was posted to
Christmas Island, which lies
about 350km south of Java,
and was then under British
colonial control.
Ted and his colleagues
were billeted in tents in
which, on the face of it, must
have seemed like an idyllic
setting.
However, they were soon
beleaguered by land crabs
and extreme heat, and
something much more
sinister.
Said Ann: “I don’t think Ted
initially knew anything about
Ted’s Nuclear Test Medal
the purpose of him going to
Christmas Island and they certainly didn’t realise how dangerous
it was. They were guinea pigs, at the end of the day.”
Ted worked on ‘X’ site, a radar station at the north of the island,
while testing took place at South East Point, about 20 miles away
on the island’s southern tip.
nuclear test explosions
Tw st
Ted, right, with colleagues wearing their flimsy nuclear blast ‘protective clothing’
Ted wrote that tests were always planned to take place from
6-7am, requiring men to leave the main camp around 2am. Those
not required to operate the radar would sit on a piece of clear
ground, listening to Eartha Kitt records, or information from
ground control over a public address system.
The men were told to don their
so-called protective clothing,
which, in reality, was a white
cotton boiler suit.
There would often be two or
three mornings like this before
an actual test took place, but on
the occasions explosions went
ahead, Ted described the
atmosphere beforehand as
being “electric”.
“Most people sat silently, odd
ones with tears in their eyes and
a few chattered incessantly,” he
wrote.
Ted went on to describe an
explosion: “As zero-hour
approached, those not working
had to lay face down, with their
head away from the blast and eyes covered by hands. “They
could not get up until after the blast.
“People working inside the darkened radar installations had to
face away from the explosion with hands over their eyes. After
locking the radar end on to the blast, to avoid damage to it,
they had then to rush to the other men before the blast came.
On one occasion, I saw one late arrival bowled over like a
skittle.
“The voice from the Tannoy saying ‘bomb gone’, brought to us
This island paradise was where Britain tested nuclear bombs
the reality of the situation. ‘5,4,3,2,1, now’. A great warmth passed
over your body. The flash of light was like looking at a
magnesium flare. Then, with eyes open, we waited for the blast.
After a minute – it seemed like ten – it arrived.
“It was like someone jumping on your back. Trees bent double,
dust and stones swirled round
and on one occasion a wooden
building collapsed.
Now we could turn round.
The fireball was climbing into
the sky, like a giant sun. The
familiar mushroom stalk
stretched from the horizon
and gradually enveloped the
fireball. Eventually, the top
flattened off into the mushroom
shape. This was still visible 12
hours later.”
After one explosion, it rained
afterwards, and everyone was
advised to stay in their tents.
Ted knew this was because of
the danger of nuclear fall-out.
Ted’s account ends with the
following reflection: “In the foreword to a souvenir booklet issued
at the time, it says – ‘...it is a privilege to be able to witness one
of the great man-made miracles of this century, those of us who
saw one or more of the experiments will remember the fact and
be proud of it’.
“I remembered the fact and joined the Aldermaston March in
1960.”
After National Service, Ted worked as a customs officer and met
Ann, who hails from Thorne, Doncaster, while working in Goole.
9
Tw st
The couple married in 1965 and moved to Dronfield
in 1968. Ted went on to become a teacher until his
retirement when he became a volunteer at
Chesterfield Law Centre for nine years. He was
involved in the British Nuclear Test Veterans’
Association at the time he wrote his account.
More than 22,000 British servicemen participated in
the British and United States' nuclear tests and cleanups
between 1952 and 1965.
Ann said: “The powers that be, the observers and
scientists, had all sorts of protection against radiation
but the men, like Ted, didn’t. Many died in their 50s
from cancers - a legacy from the radiation they
received. Shockingly, their children too suffered ten
times the normal number of birth defects from the
genetic damage caused to their fathers by exposure
to radiation. Genetic changes continue to be passed
down through subsequent generations.”
Ann said Ted had a long-standing wound on his leg
which he attributed to the effects of radiation.
Ted died of vascular dementia, aged 83.
The Nuclear Test Medal features King Charles III on
the front and an atom surrounded by olive branches
on the rear. Its ribbon colours are white, yellow, black
and red, including a lighter blue for the sky and
ocean to represent the Pacific.
Town conference urges
growth and collaboration
Chesterfield businesses are being encouraged to
explore ways in which they can grow, as part of
ambitious plans to improve the town’s economy
and create higher-value jobs for residents
S
PEAKERS at Destination Chesterfield’s annual
Celebrate Chesterfield Business Conference at the
Winding Wheel highlighted ways in which local businesses
can harness support to innovate and create new jobs.
They also identified that if all organisations in the town currently
categorised as ‘low growth’ experienced just a 1% uplift, it would
significantly boost the local economy.
Helping businesses to grow and ensuring people have the right
skills are key objectives of Chesterfield Borough Council’s
Growth Strategy for 2023-27. To support this, delegates heard
from businesses which are innovating and overcoming
challenges to boost growth.
At the conference, Destination Chesterfield also launched its
ambitious new strategy and plan, which outlines the partnership’s
aims to attract further inward investment, support businesses to
grow and encourage more people to visit the town.
12
Heron Publications, the independent local company behind
Twist magazine. were exhibitors at the Winding Wheel
Delegates visit some of the more than 40 local businesses
and organisatioins exhibiting at the event
Peter Swallow, Destination Chesterfield Chair, commented:
“This plan reflects our town’s ambition, and where we collectively
see the biggest growth opportunities. Recent research has
identified 26% of revenues from tourism, inward investment and
talent growth are shaped by people's perception of a town or
city. Meaning our collective work to promote the town are vital to
achieving the towns growth aspirations.
“Since 2010, Destination Chesterfield has worked
alongside Chesterfield Borough Council and Chesterfield
Champions to promote the area as a contemporary
destination to invest, work, live and visit, and our publicprivate
partnership continues to play a central role in the
town’s success. We must continue working together to
raise the profile of Chesterfield to realise its significant
potential.”
Coun Tricia Gilby, Leader of the Borough Council,
added: “Celebrate is always a fantastic event that
showcases the very best that our borough has to offer. It
was great to be able to meet with businesses to talk
about how the council can support them to grow, but also
to hear from them directly and discover what else we can
The Stabyhoun - our perfect pet!
A campaign to find pet lovers willing to
raise some of the world’s rarest puppies
is being supported by a local owner
W
ITH fewer than 400 Stabyhoun in the UK, it is
considered one of the rarest dog breeds in the
country. In comparison, there are more than 44,000
labradors, 42,000 French Bulldogs and almost 30,000
Cocker Spaniels registered.
But now, efforts to enlist families who are interested in helping
to breed the next generation of dogs have begun.
Just like the more famous Friesian cows and horses, the
Stabyhoun originates in Friesland – a province in northern
Netherlands. They were originally bred as an
all-round farm dog with a gentle temperament
and a knack for catching moles.
The Stabyhoun is considered a Dutch
national treasure and has been growing in
popularity across the UK since first introduced
ten years ago.
The campaign has received the support of
Annie Hogan, who lives in Wingerworth with
her husband Nick and their two Stabyhouns: 11-
year-old Hoover and four-year-old Dieuwke.
Hoover was actually the fifth Stabyhoun in the
UK.
Annie explained: “When we lost our American
Cocker Spaniel, we started researching other
breeds and ended up with a short-list of six.
“Our favourite was a Small Munsterlander, but there were
almost none of those in the country and no breeders in the UK.
By chance, a lady we met at Crufts told us that we should
consider the Stabyhoun. She had heard that a project to
establish the breed in the UK was underway. So we researched it
and it was our perfect dog.
“We applied for a puppy and collected Hoover from the
Netherlands later that year. The UK Stabyhoun Association
helped us with the paperwork needed to bring a dog into the UK
14
Dieuwke and Hoover
which made it so much easier.
“It really has been an amazing journey, and today we can’t
imagine life without our two stand-by-me dogs.
“They are such clever dogs, and they truly want to be with you
all the time. I’ve never met a breed like them; affectionate, loyal,
and playful – I’m so grateful that we have played a role in
bringing them here.”
Hoover has sired two litters of puppies in the UK, and Dieuwke
has also had a litter of puppies.
Annie added: “I had never tried breeding dogs before, and first
and foremost we wanted our dogs to be our family pets. But we
also understand how rare the Stabyhoun is, and the importance
of preserving the breed for the future.
“Having a litter of puppies was such a fulfilling experience. So
much care and effort goes into every single
litter of puppies, and the UK Stabyhoun
Association plays a huge role in the planning
and homing process.”
The UK Stabyhoun Association has
established a breeding programme to ensure a
healthy and genetically versatile population of
dogs. Hannah Woods, head of the
association’s Breeding Advisory Committee is
spearheading efforts.
She said: “Although these dogs are sold
first and foremost as much-loved family pets,
we also have to take a conservationist
approach when it comes to ensuring the
breed’s future.
“That means that at least one male and one female from each
litter born should continue into the breeding programme. We are
therefore looking for families who think it would be fun to not
only own an amazing dog, but to also let them have a litter of
puppies.”
The UK Stabyhoun Association has mapped out the homes of
all the dogs whose owners have agreed to let people meet them:
How much might this be worth?
Glance at any TV schedule and you’ll come to
the conclusion that there is no shortage of
interest in antiques and collectables. Deborah
Wain reports from a local valuation event
T
HERE are TV shows digging through the nation’s
drawer-backs in search of saleable heirlooms, while
others follow the fortunes of antiques fair browsers as
they re-sell in a bid to turn a tidy profit on a bargain.
However, with cost-of-living increases, and antique and
vintage pieces becoming ever more fashionable, more of us
have had our curiosity piqued about things we bought years
ago or inherited.
Do we own a piece of treasure that might boost our bank
accounts, or is it simply tat? Sheffield Auction Gallery’s
experts in antiques and fine art are well-qualified to help.
Established in the city since 1840, the business is the
region's oldest auctioneers and valuers.
People can take items in to their premises for free appraisal
and valuation on weekdays, but the team also hit the road
holding valuation days throughout the region, including in
Wingerworth and Chesterfield. These events offer a chance for
local residents to tap into the knowledge of experts without
having to travel far.
While not everyone who attends will experience an Antiques
Roadshow-style reveal of the eye-watering value of their
belonging, there might well be a very nice surprise in store.
Pictured inspecting some of the items taken along to a recent
valuation day are Sheffield Auction Gallery trio of experts
Sarah Clark, Andrew Jameson and Alison Gillatt
Church, Walton, a queue formed early in the day as people
waited for the team to cast their eyes on a wide variety of pieces.
Specialist consultant valuer Sarah Clark was kept especially
busy looking at silver, jewellery, and watches.
Senior valuer Alison Gillatt, whose remit includes fine art sales
for the auction house, and specialist valuer Antiques &
Collectables, Andrew Jameson, were on hand to appraise items
such as coins, pottery and artworks.
Items that would eventually go on to auction included
silhouettes and model trains.
All clients are notified of the auction in which their item is listed
when there could be just a relatively small number of people in
the room but up to a thousand following online. The business
despatches sold objects all over the world.
Alison said she grew up being taken to auctions and never
considered a career in another field.
She has been employed as an off-screen valuer on TV
programmes including Dickinson’s Real Deal and Flog It.
Memorable
A memorable find on Flog It involved a woman who brought in a
supermarket carrier bag filled with figurines and mugs.
“At the bottom of the bag was a Chinese cup which I
recognised and it later sold for £30,000. To the lady concerned it
appeared no better than anything else in the bag,” recalled
Alison.
Part of the fun for the valuers is that they really don’t know what
is going to be brought through the door next.
Alison added that it was always nice to see the same faces
when people returned with more pieces.
My magazine colleague Mike and I took along a few things of
our own; an old fountain pen, an original watercolour, and a
collection of Blue Peter annuals. Nothing of significant value
there! However, a 20 pence piece minted without a date on was
estimated to be worth £40.

Schoolreaders sought
CHARITY dedicated to improving children's literacy
A wants to recruit more volunteers to go into local
primary schools to listen to children read.
Schoolreaders volunteers not only help to improve children's
literacy, but also help them to find the joy in reading, which will
set them up for a lifetime of learning to come.
One in four children are currently leaving primary school unable
to read to the expected standard. These children cannot fully
access their secondary education, which will have a lifelong
negative impact on their future opportunities.
Bianca Chandhar, operations co-ordinator at the charity, said:
“One of the key reasons that children are not learning to read is
that they are getting insufficient one-to-one reading time with an
adult.
“The need for reading support is greater than ever, one in six
primary schools have joined Schoolreaders and need volunteers
to listen to children read for one hour a week, during term time.
“For retirees seeking a purposeful and rewarding way to give
back to their communities, volunteering with Schoolreaders
offers a fulfilling opportunity to make an impact. With time to give
back, retirees are a perfect fit for Schoolreaders, and nearly 50%
of Schoolreaders volunteers are retired or semi-retired.
“Children and schools benefit from the extra reading support
and our volunteers find the experience hugely rewarding too;
knowing that they have done their bit to support the younger
generation.”
County’s electric buses
LECTRIC buses are heading for Derbyshire following
E Derbyshire County Council’s joint bid with Stagecoach
for Government funding to replace diesel models with a
new, ‘clean energy’ fleet.
A total of £5.1 million has been awarded by the government to
support Stagecoach in buying 57 electric buses for their depot in
Chesterfield – as well as vehicle-charging infrastructure for the
depot. The move will help to reduce the level of carbon
emissions from transport in the county, improving local air quality.
Stagecoach is also investing £25.31 million towards the cost of
the zero-emission fleet, which will run on 13 local bus services
across Derbyshire.
The new buses will operate in both rural and urban areas in NE
Derbyshire, Chesterfield and Bolsover.
Matt Kitchin, Managing Director at Stagecoach in Chesterfield,
said: “Sustainable forms of public transport are key to reducing
congestion and improving air quality across the region and we
are excited to invest in these state-of-the-art vehicles to
encourage more people to make the switch to bus travel.”
The new zero-emission fleet will consist of 39 double-deckers
and 18 single-deck buses with extra space for wheelchair users
and people with pushchairs or prams.
Fraud figures
D
ERBYSHIRE Police received almost 5,000 individual
fraud reports over the past 13 months.
The analysis, carried out by QR Code Generator QRFY, looked
at data from Action Fraud and the Office for National Statistics to
uncover how many reports each police force had in England and
Wales, and the most common type of fraud.
Derbyshire Police recorded 4,975 fraud reports, the most
common category being ‘Online Shopping and Auction’ fraud,
which refers to the non-delivery of products bought by a
consumer, or the misrepresentation of a product.
The second most common category of fraud reported was
‘Other Advance Fee Fraud'. Following in third was 'Hacking -
Social Media and Email’.
Waste centre changes
HANGES are being introduced at Derbyshire County
C Council’s household waste recycling centres.
The move follows a public consultation into how to make
savings as budgets are squeezed and the amount of incoming
waste rises.
The changes include: Charge a fee to dispose of tyres and
asbestos set at £4 per tyre and £6 per sheet and continue to
operate the recycling centres seven days a week but reduce the
opening time by two hours each day at eight of the centres when
they are typically less busy.
A trial scheme will allow registered small businesses and sole
traders to pay to use two of the recycling centres to dispose of
business waste outside of the hours the centres are open to the
public.
A detailed plan for this trial scheme, proposed for centres in
Ashbourne and Bolsover, will be presented to Cabinet at a later
date for approval.
No date has been set for the changes to be implemented but
plans are being drawn-up for them to be introduced later this
year.
Look for exotic newts in
your garden
An adult Alpine newt discovered by Ian in his
garden and, right, the protected great crested newt
Prof Ian Rotherham introduces us to tiny, but
exciting, creatures which may be in your garden
I
HAVE mentioned newts previously and highlighted my
suspicion that they are capable of decimating frog
populations.
We do have three native species of newt, and all occur across our
region. Most common is the smooth newt with the female slightly
larger than the male, but the latter sports a crest during the breeding
season and a yellowy-orange belly.
The adults range from around thee to four inches in length and their
skin is smooth and moist. The dark-coloured males with zagged,
breeding-season crests are frequently mistaken for crested newts
which they are not. Indeed, they are much smaller than their speciallyprotected
cousins.
The baby newts, called larvae, are tiny, almost translucent creatures
and when recently hatched, have gills to breathe with. These can be
present in your pond without you ever knowing
unless you look very hard.
Furthermore, all the newts lay single eggs, usually
curled inside a folded bit of pondweed. Again, this
means that unlike frogs with their massed spawn and
toads with their strings of eggs, newts are not obvious
and can arrive with imported plants or other pond
materials.
The least common native newt is the palmate which
is small, and has a more pointed nose, no crest at all,
and in the case of the male, there is a needle-like
protrusion at the end of the tail. This is used during
courtship as the male wafts pheromones towards the
female and she is perhaps enticed by the movement.
Palmate newt males have webbed rear feet.
They are restricted often to moorland fringe ponds,
but I used to have them in a wildlife garden when
I lived at Charnock on the edge of the Moss
Valley, although historically, that would have been
20
close to the moorland edge.
The specially-protected species is the
great crested or ‘warty’ newt, and this is
subject to both European and British
legislation. These animals are impressively
large, up to five or six inches, maybe more, with a rough, dark skin on
the upper back, head and tail, and bright yellow-orange underside
with black spots.
In breeding condition, the male has a distinctive crest along the
back and then also along the tail. You may mistake other species for
crested newts, but if you do see one, they are unmistakable.
However, I did think I had great crested newts in my garden,
although they didn’t seem ‘right’, and the larvae in particular, were
odd. It turns out that we have a population of the exotic alpine newt
introduced and naturalised and apparently spreading across the
region.
Similar to, but smaller than, great crested newts, alpines are dark
and warty on top and yellow underneath but lacking the distinctive
black spots. The larvae are large and dark black.
I first came across these whilst clearing out my
ponds one winter and the adults were hibernating in
the mud. They are exciting to find, and I now have
records away from Norton and as far as Greenhill.
So, if you think you have them do let me know and,
ideally, send a photograph. They are up to about fourand-a-half
inches long and have stunningly marbled
markings. The downside is that alpine newts will clear
out a pond of frog tadpoles in about a day. It is illegal
to release them into the wild.
BrightLife Champions Against
Loneliness Awards Champion Awards
The awards celebrated those who have
gone above and beyond to prevent
loneliness and isolation among older
people living in Chesterfield, Bolsover and
NE Derbyshire.
Tina Harris-Horner took the Champion
title in recognition of her work setting up
community group Inspiring Inkersall.
She was nominated by Anne Francis
Heyes, County Councillor for Staveley.
Anne said: “As part of the group's work,
Tina applied for and has successfully
taken over stewardship of The Hollies
community rooms in Sutton Crescent.
“Throughout the last four-to-five years,
the group, headed by Tina, has worked
tirelessly to put on events on behalf of the
community. She has specifically helped
the lonely, elderly and isolated in the
community by scheduling regular warm
spaces sessions in the community rooms
as well as free cooked meals, craft-making
events, exercise classes, talks - the list is
literally endless.
“Tina has also arranged Christmas and
summer fayres for the local community,
Remembrance parades and had Santa visit
the streets at Christmas, handing out free selection boxes to local
children and elders.”
Jane Wells from Junction Arts receives her award from Danny Callaghan
Bev Whileman and Sue Stevenson with their nominator Alison Timperely (right)
Anne described Tina, a mobile hairdresser, as “an honest,
straight-talking, pillar of the Inkersall community. Everyone knows
her and respects her. She asks for no credit for what she does.”
An Outstanding Achievement Award went to
Bev Whileman and Sue Stevenson, nominated
by Alison Timperely and others, for their work
as volunteer organisers of the weekly
Grassmoor Meet & Greet Social Group which
they started just over a year ago because they
were lonely themselves.
Chesterfield-based Junction Arts was named
Champion Charity, nominated by Danny
Callaghan and Mark Fletcher, MP for Bolsover.
Over the last five years, the Creswell Gets
valuable and highly effective project for
tackling loneliness.
Mark said: “I know from speaking with
residents in Creswell the great work Junction
Arts do to help combat isolation and loneliness
in the community.
“The group helps to build support networks
and friendships, which are absolutely essential
for some of my constituents. Their efforts are
greatly appreciated by the local community
and in my view are deeply deserving of
recognition for their work.”
Cloudy2Clear Windows are the
leading name in the industry.
There is now no need for you
to risk your windows by using
the dreaded double glazing
cowboy down the street. You
can join over 340,000 happy
customers and replace your
glass ethically and affordably.
If you have a failed glass unit
it may not provide you with
the protection you need, or be
as energy-efficient as it once
was. Why not take a minute
to check your home to see if
any double glazing has failed?
Taking action now can prevent
future financial problems.
When talking to the Manager of
Cloudy2Clear John Kendall it
became evident that the value of
saving their customers money
has been held dear for a number
of years. In addition since
starting the business in 2005,
Cloudy2Clear have committed to
supporting the local community
by providing a service that saves
the public both time and money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only
requires the glass to be replaced
and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. John
commented “By doing this we
make the customer considerable
savings and there is much less
upheaval in the family home.
Also, whether communities find
themselves in a financial crisis
or not, saving money when you
don’t need to waste it is always
the sensible option, and our
service does just that”.
Why we must produce our own food
Toby Perkins, Member of
Parliament for Chesterfield,
presents his monthly column
for Twist readers
A
S the Shadow Minister for Nature
and Rural Affairs, I have regular
visits and meetings with farmers and
food producers and I have seen first-hand
the pressures they are facing and the
instability of many farms in the UK.
It has been a particularly difficult period for
farming and food production in recent years.
A report in December showed that over the
last seven years almost 5,000 producers of
meat, fruit, vegetables and dairy products
had gone out of business, together with a
30% decrease in the number of jobs in
agriculture, forestry and fishing during this
period.
This particularly affects our rural
communities, but also means we are
importing more produce and reducing our
food security.
There’s a balance that needs to be reached
between ensuring we have affordable food,
and ensuring our hard-working farmers can
stay in business. One way we can move towards this is by
educating people, so they understand the work that goes into
our food production, helping people appreciate what it takes to
get food from the fields to our kitchen table and why it is
important to have such high food standards.
And farms are also having to diversify. We are seeing more
farmers selling direct to customers, like the Hassop farm I visited
in the Peak District last week, which has been selling fresh milk
direct to customers for some time. I was a regular customer of
theirs during lockdown.
It was good to see that they have now expanded their offer with
a new shop that also sells milkshakes and other products. Other
farms are expanding into the leisure sector, offering camping and
glamping on their land. And many farms are putting more land
aside for improving the environment and increasing biodiversity.
Locally, I am a loyal customer of Adam’s Happy Hens, which
started as an honesty
box on the Baslow Road
at Holymoorside, selling
a few boxes of eggs and
has grown immensely. I
love visiting their farm
shop and the goat and
chicken feeding delights
younger customers, so I
encourage others to give
them a visit too.
This mixed-use
approach will help British
farming to become more
sustainable, but they may
still require additional
subsidies from
Government, a fairer deal
from supermarkets for
what they are paid for
their food, and a push to
get consumers to buy
24
Toby Perkins MP checks out a tractor at Carlton Forest Farm
Pictured with farmers and NFU representatives
more British produce.
It is important to recognise that the high standards farmers
maintain in this country can mean a great deal of additional costs
that their competitors in other countries don’t have. And with
many farmers looking to restore the balance of nature in farming,
which can mean putting aside some agricultural spaces to turn
them into areas for trees, wildflower meadows, ponds and
wildlife corridors, this can impact on the amount they can
produce and again represents a cost to their business.
Labour has pledged to improve food security and boost the
UK’s agriculture sector with a “new deal for farmers”, including a
target that at least half of the food used in hospitals, schools and
prisons is British.
Personally, I always try my best to buy British, seasonal
produce. This means I am getting the freshest produce that has
been grown or reared to the highest standards, as well as
reducing the carbon
footprint of my family
food shop compared to
from products that have
been imported from
abroad.
The invasion of
Ukraine and the
impact on grain and
other food imports –
which has contributed
to the significant rise in
food costs – is a good
example why we need
to ensure we are
producing our own
food.
Food security is part of
national security and we
need to appreciate our
farmers, fisherman and
food producers.

Market Place
A glimpse of town’s future
The next phase of a multi-million pound
project to regenerate Chesterfield town
centre is set to get underway this summer
T
HE Borough Council’s ‘Revitalising the Heart of
Chesterfield’ project – which has already seen
progress on work to refurbish the iconic Stephenson
Memorial Hall, as well as improvements to Packers Row –
will transform the look, feel and flow of key public spaces.
The detailed timescales are being
finalised, but it is expected that work to
revamp the town’s historic Market Place will
start in summer.
Key improvements will include:
Market Square The historic market will be
revitalised with a new layout to make it
easier to walk around, new stalls with
modern facilities for traders, and vibrant
new canopies in heritage colours. The plans
will also ensure the historic Town Pump is
made into a feature in this space.
New Square Plans will create an attractive
and flexible space that will complement the
main market and speciality markets, but can
also be used to host festivals, events,
cultural celebrations, and community
gatherings – bringing our town centre to
life.
Rykneld Square This area will be
transformed to create a more welcoming,
green space from which to enjoy the
Crooked Spire, and better connect this
landmark to the town centre.
Spire Walk The council will work in
partnership with the Church of St Mary and All Saints to create a
more welcoming and attractive space in which to enjoy the
Crooked Spire. This includes imaginative new lighting that will
enhance the appearance of the spire at night and link into
Rykneld Square.
Corporation Street Improved paving and lighting will revamp this
30
Rykneld Square
New Square
key gateway to the town centre and provide a welcoming
environment for visitors to the refurbished theatre and museum.
This will provide an attractive and welcoming new gateway to the
refurbished Stephenson Memorial Hall.
Attractive lighting, new digital facilities, more greenery, new
seating and signage will feature across the regeneration sites,
creating a more attractive, welcoming and safe town centre for
everyone to enjoy.
Coun Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor
economy, said: “We’re immensely proud of our town and these
widespread improvements will create a
revitalised and vibrant town centre that
builds on our strong history and heritage,
supporting it to thrive for generations to
come.
“A lot of work has been happening behind
the scenes to get to this stage, including
ongoing conversations with our market
traders, businesses and residents, and
we’re excited to look ahead to a start on
site in the summer.
“Chesterfield certainly has positive times
ahead, with the major refurbishment work at
Stephenson Memorial Hall – home to our
beloved theatre and museum – also
progressing well.”
The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield
project will be completed in phases and is
due for completion next year.
Coun Sarvent added: “We have a strong
track record of making the most of external
funding opportunities to invest in the future
of our borough, and through projects like
the Revitalising the Heart of Project this
work will bring real improvements for
residents and businesses of our town, while boosting our appeal
to visitors.”
The project will complement improvements at the Northern
Gateway and Elder Way and – at the other side of town – will
connect with plans to transform the area around Chesterfield
Station.

‘Ten out of ten’
endorsement
SOMETIMES, going bolder with style and colour can be a
little daunting.
But a couple who went down that route with bespoke
wardrobes from Supafit are thrilled with the result.
Mr and Mrs Summerfield have been upgrading their
Dronfield home throughout. And their choice for the masterbedroom
was four-panel contemporary shaker furniture in a
focal colour popular with interior designers; Kombu Green.
The Summerfields also selected satin brass ribbed halfmoon
handles for even more impact.
Mrs Summerfield said she had been looking online for
design inspiration prior to giving Supafit a call. So she had
plenty to talk through with Supafit’s Jenna, who visited to
measure up and discuss options.
Next, it was an exciting visit to the showroom to make the
final decisions on colours and styles.
Mrs Summerfield said: “I think it is sometimes easier to go
for neutrals.
“But we love the green and we have chosen a statement
wallpaper featuring that colour for the opposite wall.”
As Supafit needed to work around a beam in the bedroom, it
was decided a shorter unit should house a full-length mirror,
which proved to be an ideal solution.
Mrs Summerfield
described every aspect of
Supafit’s service, including
the price, as “very, very
good” with the fitting team
earning a “ten out of ten”
endorsement.
She said: “We absolutely
love our new wardrobes.
They turned out even better
than we thought they
would. We are very happy
and would definitely
recommend Supafit.”
WITCHING Chesterfield’s annual 1940s Market to Springtime this year proved to be
a major success with a bumper attendance witnessing all manner of town centre
The pleasant sunshine helped too and Twist spoke to enthusiasts who had travelled to the
town from Leicester, Hull, York and Cambridge.
In addition to plenty of rousing musical entertainment, visitors also enjoyed inspecting vintage
vehicles and even a replica Spitfire which was displayed in the Market Place. Thursday Market
stallholders also did a roaring trade on the day.
“We’re proud to be supporting this event because it is
suitable for everyone – helping to bring people to the area
Archbishop
welcomed to
Chesterfield
T
HE Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby,
stopped off in Chesterfield during a visit to
Derbyshire.
He was welcomed at Chesterfield Railway Station by
the Bishop of Derby, Libby Lane, before visiting the
foodbank hosted by Saints Augustine Church on Derby
Road and the nearby Christian charity, Hope House, a
community with accommodation for previously
homeless people.
The Archbishop went on to tour other parts of the
Diocese and led a day of prayers with people of all
ages and backgrounds, giving his support to churches
and community groups.
He makes pastoral visits to several dioceses each
year and this was his first visit to Derbyshire since
2016.
The Most Reverend Welby, said: “It’s been great to
visit the diocese of Derby, the people have been
amazing, and the welcome has been warm. It’s been
wonderful to pray together.
“I encourage people to pray, to bring their whole
selves to God, the good, bad and ugly, and let Him
meet you with His love.”
COHAT
Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment
Dental disease is one of the most common health complaints of pets. Up to 15% of pets of any
age will have dental disease; this increases up to 80% in pets over 9 years old!
When your vet or vet nurse recommends dental treatment, this will be in the form of a COHAT.
A COHAT must be performed under a full general anaesthetic. As standard we include a preoperative
blood test and IV drip during the procedure. Your pet will have a full series of oral x-rays, a complete
oral exam, dental charting, and a full mouth clean to remove any tartar build-up. Based on the results
of this the vet can then formulate a plan for any necessary treatment, which may include extractions.
If no further treatment is required, this will be classed as a Stage 1A COHAT.
If there is some simple treatment required, this will be done at the same time
and will be classed as a Stage 1B.
More extensive treatment will require a second, staged procedure on another day.
We recommend splitting severe dental work into 2 sessions to minimise
anaesthetic risks for your pet, and to promote better healing and recovery.
We recommend a gap of 2-6 weeks between stages.
Colleagues rally to aid hospice
T
RUESTYLE Windows is known for being an
experienced family-run business that genuinely
cares.
So it’s no surprise that the team are gearing up for a
charity challenge in aid of Rotherham Hospice.
Owner Damian Wheldon, together with colleague
James Johnson, and friend Anthony Glossop, have
signed up for the Benidorm or Bust Rally, in May.
The challenge is to drive 1,400 miles, over four days,
across France, Andorra and Spain, ending in Benidorm;
hoping that the banger they chose - a 2005 Honda
Accord Estate - doesn’t let them down!
The team have set a target of raising £5,000 for the
hospice and have been asking suppliers to sponsor the
vehicle.
Damian took over Truestyle Windows from his father
and is now joined in the business by wife Emma. It is
now almost two years since the company moved from
Dinnington to bigger premises at Shireoaks.
Truestyle Windows prides itself on providing highquality
doors, windows and conservatories that are
expertly fitted by experienced craftsman, at a price that is
affordable.
They have ten manufacturers offering variations of products
on view at the showroom, which attracts clients, both residential
and commercial, from across the region.
The team has transformed a full range of properties from
grand country homes to compact garages.
Damian is hands-on and sees all jobs through from start
to finish, with most work obtained through personal
Moon
craters
identified
I
40
‘VE picked out four different craters for us to track down,
one in each of the four quadrants, and with the best
viewing dates for them scattered throughout the month.
All are visible with the naked eye, but anyone with binoculars or
any size of telescope will be well set to spot even more detail.
Our Lunar month for ‘May’ actually starts with the new moon on
May 8th this year, and will continue right through to June 5th. Each
quarter of a Lunar month takes approximately one week.
The new Lunar month begins with the New Moon, when it is
completely dark and obscured. Within the first couple of days, the
bright crescent sliver will appear to the right in a 'reverse-C shape'.
We'll introduce a term here called the 'Lunar Terminator',
which is the technical name for the dividing line
between day and night on the moon's surface. All
objects orbiting a sun will have their own
terminator - the Terrestrial (Earth's)
Terminator passes over us every single
dawn and dusk.
After around one week, the Moon will
be at First Quarter, with the Terminator
exactly bisecting the disc, the left half in
darkness and the right side well-lit.
Second quarter will see the Moon
become full, and the terminator
disappear entirely off the left side of the
disc. A new terminator will begin to
cross, again from right-to-left. Third
Quarter will see the terminator again
exactly bisecting the face, but this time with
the left half well-let, and the right side in
darkness.
The final days of the lunar month, in very-early
June, will see a 'correct-C shape' crescent on the lefthand
side, shrinking until it disappears for the next New
Moon.
It may be tempting to try and spot our lunar features
during the Full Moon, and it's true that this is when the Moon is often
brightest. However it's not necessarily the best option for two
reasons. Firstly, the Full Moon can be so bright compared to the
night, that it can saturate our night vision, ruining our ability to spot
fine detail. Secondly, when the Moon is full, the angle of the sunlight
illuminating the face is very direct, which tends to remove any
shadows cast by the lunar geography, and remove a lot of contrast
that would help us pick out the features, making everything blend
into everything else.
Instead, we'll come back to our terminator line. The best time for
spotting detail in a lunar feature is the few days while it is only-just
on the light-side of the terminator. Sometimes this will be a few days
before the terminator crosses a feature, while in the other half of the
lunar month, it will be the few days after the terminator has already
passed. Best dates for spotting our four craters are listed at the end.
We'll start with Langrenus Crater in the East, a light-coloured crater
right on the Eastern edge of one of the darker 'Maria' (Seas).
Langrenus is approximately round, but due to our viewpoint of it on
the extreme Eastern edge, it will appear as an elongated oval. The
darker Maria are actually lowlands that long ago filled with flowing
lava. The lava cooled to form basalt plains. This basaltic lava is ironrich
in comparison to the highlands, with the iron giving the resulting
basalt a dark colour and lower reflectivity.
Appearing around the same time of the month are Plato Crater in
the North, and Tycho Crater in the South. In contrast to
Langrenus, Plato is a dark-coloured crater against the
lighter surroundings. At some point after its
B
A
creation, Plato filled with the same basaltic lava
as the Maria, to give the darker colouration.
Tycho is one of the Moon's most
prominent features. Have a look at Tycho
on a few different nights, as the
terminator moves. While the crater
itself is small, you should see the very
bright rays surrounding it. These are
the lines of 'ejecta', that is smaller
rocks and dust that were thrown out
and away during the initial impact,
similar to radiating cracks in glass, or a
liquid splatter. Tycho crater itself is
approximately 85km across, but the bright
spokes of ejecta expanding out from there
across the surface can be as long as
1,500km.
Our final crater in the West is Grimaldi. This is
both a comparatively large crater, as well as being
relatively old too. As such, the clean distinct edges that
we've seen on the other craters have disappeared from
Grimaldi over time, due to subsequent impacts and the
crater walls crumbling away and smoothing out. Like Plato, Grimaldi
is a darker basaltic crater against a lighter backdrop.
Tycho Brahe, Michel Van Langren, and Francesco Grimaldi were all
European astronomers of the Renaissance era and individually
contributed to the Lunar observations and mapping of the period.
Plato is named for the Ancient Greek philosopher of the same name.
Lunar Month: May 8th-June 5th
In the first half of the lunar month, look for this crater in the few
days AFTER: Langrenus, May 10th; Plato, May 15th; Tycho, May 16th;
Grimaldi, May 21st.
In the second half of the lunar month, look for this crater in the few
days BEFORE: Langrenus, May 25th; Plato, June 1st; Tycho, June
5th; Grimaldi, June 5th.

Eating out: Our
likes and dislikes
V
ALUE for money, attentive service, comfortable
surroundings and quality food - we all know what we
enjoy when dining out. Fortunately, we have many rather
special restaurants, pubs and tearooms on our patch which
match these requirements.
But what are the biggest turn-offs for you? Asking around
Twist magazine colleagues, here are a few which you may have
shared: cutlery which has not been properly cleaned, tables
with wobbly legs, slow service from waiters, diners not
receiving meals together and loud people at other tables.
And what about tipping? Although many places now add a
percentage to the bill as a matter of course, it appears most of
us would still prefer to use our discretion when recognising
quality table service.
When eating out in Sheffield city centre recently, the bill for
our family meal, including the mandatory service charge,
totalled £94. We handed over £100 cash and were still asked:
“Would you like your change?”
On another occasion, visiting a carvery on the outskirts of
Chesterfield, we paid at the till when ordering our food and
were surprised to be invited, at that stage, to leave a tip. We
had still to take off our coats!
We would be delighted to hear your tales of excellent and
not-so-good experiences at local restaurants.
Couple’s new gardening Peak
E
XPERIENCED horticulturists Murry and Caroline
Newbury are the new proprietors of one of the
country’s longest-established garden centres.
They have taken over the running of Hope Valley Garden
Centre at Bamford where they have already initiated a number
of improvements and greatly added to stock levels in time for
spring and summer planting.
The couple have more than 25 years experience in the
horticulture industry and they have retained existing team
members at the extensive Peak District centre.
Now they are looking forward to welcoming customers old
and new to their new venture - particularly friends from the
north Derbyshire area.
Hope Valley Garden Centre - alongside the road to Hope and
Castleton - is one of the oldest in the country, being established
by Clifford Proctor in 1947. It has recently been owned by Emma
Proctor who has entrusted Murry and Caroline with the running
and development of the business.
You will discover everything for your garden from seeds and
colourful bedding plants through to roses, shrubs, trees, pond
plants, garden furniture, statues and planters.
Planned developments include the introduction of a customer
loyalty scheme, a new e-commerce website, the development
of a large indoor showroom which will greatly increase the
choices and range that will be on offer. The couple also plan to
run various customer workshops which will be bookable online
or in store.
Murry explained that the couple were en-route to Buxton
when they called in at the centre to take a look around and
discovered the business was on the market.
