Waste centre changes
HANGES are being introduced at Derbyshire County
C Council’s household waste recycling centres.
The move follows a public consultation into how to make
savings as budgets are squeezed and the amount of incoming
waste rises.
The changes include: Charge a fee to dispose of tyres and
asbestos set at £4 per tyre and £6 per sheet and continue to
operate the recycling centres seven days a week but reduce the
opening time by two hours each day at eight of the centres when
they are typically less busy.
A trial scheme will allow registered small businesses and sole
traders to pay to use two of the recycling centres to dispose of
business waste outside of the hours the centres are open to the
public.
A detailed plan for this trial scheme, proposed for centres in
Ashbourne and Bolsover, will be presented to Cabinet at a later
date for approval.
No date has been set for the changes to be implemented but
plans are being drawn-up for them to be introduced later this
year.
A
STUDENT from a Chesterfield area school won a
bronze award in a prestigious public speaking
competition.
Taya Martin, from Netherthorpe School, came third in this
year’s Gresham College Schools’ Oracy Competition, in which
lower sixth pupils, aged 16 and 17, from throughout the UK are
asked to choose and answer a question set by the college. She
is pictured receiving her award.
The finalists delivered their speeches in person at Barnard’s
Inn Hall, London, where they competed for prize-money to go
towards their university fees and academic resources.
Taya won £600 towards laptops and Netherthorpe School
received £500 to go towards enhancing the school's
programmes and curricular activities.
This year's competition featured an expanded range of topics,
including law, health, artificial intelligence and science.
Participants were required to submit recorded presentations,
written summaries, and detailed source documentation before
the finalists were decided.
Gresham College, the first institute of Higher Education in
London, has been providing free public education across the
arts and sciences since 1597 and is also a registered charity in
England and Wales. Through this competition, they aim to
showcase the importance of oracy competence and the art of
communicating.
