ALUE for money, attentive service, comfortable
surroundings and quality food - we all know what we
enjoy when dining out. Fortunately, we have many rather
special restaurants, pubs and tearooms on our patch which
match these requirements.
But what are the biggest turn-offs for you? Asking around
Twist magazine colleagues, here are a few which you may have
shared: cutlery which has not been properly cleaned, tables
with wobbly legs, slow service from waiters, diners not
receiving meals together and loud people at other tables.
And what about tipping? Although many places now add a
percentage to the bill as a matter of course, it appears most of
us would still prefer to use our discretion when recognising
quality table service.
When eating out in Sheffield city centre recently, the bill for
our family meal, including the mandatory service charge,
totalled £94. We handed over £100 cash and were still asked:
“Would you like your change?”
On another occasion, visiting a carvery on the outskirts of
Chesterfield, we paid at the till when ordering our food and
were surprised to be invited, at that stage, to leave a tip. We
had still to take off our coats!
