ALUE for money, attentive service, comfortable<br />

surroundings and quality food - we all know what we<br />

enjoy when dining out. Fortunately, we have many rather<br />

special restaurants, pubs and tearooms on our patch which<br />

match these requirements.<br />

But what are the biggest turn-offs for you? Asking around<br />

<strong>Twist</strong> magazine colleagues, here are a few which you may have<br />

shared: cutlery which has not been properly cleaned, tables<br />

with wobbly legs, slow service from waiters, diners not<br />

receiving meals together and loud people at other tables.<br />

And what about tipping? Although many places now add a<br />

percentage to the bill as a matter of course, it appears most of<br />

us would still prefer to use our discretion when recognising<br />

quality table service.<br />

When eating out in Sheffield city centre recently, the bill for<br />

our family meal, including the mandatory service charge,<br />

totalled £94. We handed over £100 cash and were still asked:<br />

“Would you like your change?”<br />

On another occasion, visiting a carvery on the outskirts of<br />

Chesterfield, we paid at the till when ordering our food and<br />

were surprised to be invited, at that stage, to leave a tip. We<br />

had still to take off our coats!<br />
