OW time passes. I can’t quite believe that this is the
next to the last Mayor’s column I will be writing for the
Dronfield Eye.
This month has been a little quieter than previous months for
my husband and consort, Keith, and myself, although no less
enjoyable or interesting.
On 12th March, we were invited by a member of the Henry
Fanshaw School Trust Board to attend a tour around the
school before their annual meeting. The trust do excellent
work, which benefits the school, and I would like to say a big
‘thank you’ to them for their commitment in doing so.
Martyn Cooper, the headteacher, showed us around before the
meeting and it was very interesting and informative. During the
tour we were shown equipment and technology which had been
provided by the trust and is highly beneficial to the students.
It would seem that the days of me going to school with my
pencil case and exercise books covered in wallpaper are long
gone!
It was also a pleasure to meet and chat with pupils and staff
who were all very enthusiastic about their work.
On 25th March, Keith and I, together with Lee Rowley MP,
attended the latest Friends of Dronfield Station children’s artwork
displays at Dronfield Station. This was a great privilege for me as
this was the second time I had been invited to see the beautiful
artwork that the children had done.
The amazing displays covered topics such as the Great Fire of
London, rainforest art and scenes from a classroom window.
Once again, it was lovely to meet and chat to the children and
staff from Lenthall, Northfield and William Levick schools. A ‘well
done’ goes out to them all and I would like to suggest that if you
are passing the station, please pop along to see their work.
I’d like to express my gratitude to all the FODs volunteers for
their continued support with this event and for looking after our
station.

Top class!
2O Bathroom Solutions’ Richard Hardy and the team have created
a special shower room for a rather special client – one of Richard’s
H
former schoolteachers.
Andrew Hitchman taught Richard at a primary school in Sheffield, and he
and wife Elaine have called upon the expert services of H2O Bathroom
Solutions in the past.
This latest project was designed around disabilities Andrew has, with
everything designed to make life a little easier for him.
The Dronfield Woodhouse property’s previous quadrant shower wasn’t
too easily accessible, but worries have now been banished with a longer
walk-in.
Andrew’s request for a non-slip base has been met and the shower also
has a grab rail, with provision for a pull-down seat to be included in future,
should it be required.
A new wash basin – of narrower design to make more space - and a high
level WC have been wall-mounted for easy cleaning ,while a storage
cupboard has also been installed.
Elsewhere in the brief, Elaine was
keen for the basin to have a swing tap
and to avoid one of her pet hates – “a
towel rail which you have to cram a
towel into as it sits so close to the
wall”.
A clever solution was found for the
latter issue and the couple are
delighted with their upright rail heater
and towel warmer
Finally, the room has been fitted
with underfloor heating which, Elaine
said, makes such a difference,
especially in a morning.
Overall, Andrew and Elaine are
thrilled with the work done by
Richard, “consummate perfectionist”
Mark, the fitter, and the rest of the
H2O Bathroom Solutions team.
Elaine said: “I would recommend
H2O to anyone. They were very
professional and the job was done
with a huge amount of care and
attention.
“The after-service is good as well as
there was no problem sorting a bit of
an initial minor leak we had on the
towel rail. We have full confidence in

Emergency bleed kits installed
Ten life-saving traumatic bleed kits
are being installed at locations
throughout Dronfield, funded by the
town’s Rotarians. Mike Firth reports
A
LREADY a pioneering town with more
than 40 emergency defibrilators at
hand, life-saving bleed control kits can now
be used in Dronfield when someone suffers a
traumatic injury.
The Rotary Club of Dronfield has funded the
equipment through proceeds from its weekly
Dronfield Community Lottery and donations to the
annual Santa’s Sleigh attraction.

ten kits after
discussions with
the Dronfield Safer
Neighbourhood
Team.
“Having a Bleed
Control Kit on the
scene means that
you can provide
life-saving treatment within minutes and before
emergency services arrive.
“But the best outcome, of course, is that they
are never needed.”
The first kits have been installed locally outside
Sainsbury’s, the Railway Station, Gosforth Fields
Sports Associaton, Pentland Road shops and
Greendale shopping precinct. Other locations
likely to receive them include Cliffe Park, the Civic
Centre, Dronfield Parish Church and Dronfield
Bottom.
Items inside the kits include an emergency
trauma bandage, cotton swabs, scissors, surgical
tape, a tourniquet, gloves and a mask, foil rescue
blanket, a face shield for CPR and a whistle to
attract attention.

Schoolreaders sought
CHARITY dedicated to improving children's literacy
A wants to recruit more volunteers to go into local
primary schools to listen to children read.
Schoolreaders volunteers not only help to improve children's
literacy, but also help them to find the joy in reading, which will
set them up for a lifetime of learning to come.
One in four children are currently leaving primary school unable
to read to the expected standard. These children cannot fully
access their secondary education, which will have a lifelong
negative impact on their future opportunities.
Bianca Chandhar, operations co-ordinator at the charity, said:
“One of the key reasons that children are not learning to read is
that they are getting insufficient one-to-one reading time with an
adult.
“The need for reading support is greater than ever, one in six
primary schools have joined Schoolreaders and need volunteers
to listen to children read for one hour a week, during term time.
“For retirees seeking a purposeful and rewarding way to give
back to their communities, volunteering with Schoolreaders
offers a fulfilling opportunity to make an impact. With time to give
back, retirees are a perfect fit for Schoolreaders, and nearly 50%
of Schoolreaders volunteers are retired or semi-retired.
“Children and schools benefit from the extra reading support
and our volunteers find the experience hugely rewarding too;
knowing that they have done their bit to support the younger
generation.”

County’s electric buses
LECTRIC buses are heading for Derbyshire following
E Derbyshire County Council’s joint bid with Stagecoach
for Government funding to replace diesel models with a
new, ‘clean energy’ fleet.
A total of £5.1 million has been awarded by the government to
support Stagecoach in buying 57 electric buses for their depot in
Chesterfield – as well as vehicle-charging infrastructure for the
depot. The move will help to reduce the level of carbon
emissions from transport in the county, improving local air quality.
Stagecoach is also investing £25.31 million towards the cost of
the zero-emission fleet, which will run on 13 local bus services
across Derbyshire.
The new buses will operate in both rural and urban areas in NE
Derbyshire, Chesterfield and Bolsover.
Matt Kitchin, Managing Director at Stagecoach in Chesterfield,
said: “Sustainable forms of public transport are key to reducing
congestion and improving air quality across the region and we
are excited to invest in these state-of-the-art vehicles to
encourage more people to make the switch to bus travel.”
The new zero-emission fleet will consist of 39 double-deckers
and 18 single-deck buses with extra space for wheelchair users
and people with pushchairs or prams.
Fraud figures
D
ERBYSHIRE Police received almost 5,000 individual
fraud reports over the past 13 months.
The analysis, carried out by QR Code Generator QRFY, looked
at data from Action Fraud and the Office for National Statistics to
uncover how many reports each police force had in England and
Wales, and the most common type of fraud.
Derbyshire Police recorded 4,975 fraud reports, the most
common category being ‘Online Shopping and Auction’ fraud,
which refers to the non-delivery of products bought by a
consumer, or the misrepresentation of a product.
The second most common category of fraud reported was
‘Other Advance Fee Fraud'. Following in third was 'Hacking -
Social Media and Email’.

E recently received some brilliant levelling up
news for Dronfield – that Life Dronfield’s bid for
£250,000 to rejuvenate the Parish Halls has been
successful.
I know that many residents across the town have been
following Life Dronfield’s work for many years; they already do
amazing work for the community today from the Parish Halls
which they were able to secure a few years ago.
Life have always had a long-term ambition to massively
renovate the Halls and create an unrivalled community facility
that everyone can use.
When the opportunity came along to bid into the
Government’s Community Ownership Fund, they seized it and,
a few months ago, put a submission in for £250,000 – a
significant amount to support their renovation plans.
A few weeks ago, we heard the brilliant news that this
application has been successful and the money was on its
way.
The funding is coming from the Government’s Community
Ownership Fund which is designed to support groups all
around the country to bring buildings back into community
use.
I’m so pleased for Andy Evers and all of the team at Life
Dronfield. I know that this has been a labour of love for them
for so long and it was a pleasure to support their bid and to see
it be successful.
I popped into see them a few days ago, after the
announcement, and I know it has opened up a whole world of
possibilities and a desire to get going on the next stage of this
exciting project.
They will be having a series of public open days and
information sessions in the weeks ahead; make sure you pop
down and find out all about the fantastic work they are doing
and the exciting times ahead!
Separately, I also want to say a huge thanks to Apperknowle
residents who came along to my latest village meeting a few
days ago at the Elderly People’s Club.
We had a really good discussion covering both local and
national issues and, along with Coun Alex Dale, we took away a
number of issues to look into.
That’s the 11th town and village meeting I’ve done so far in
2024 – and there’s many more to come!

T Derbyshire over one day in May in aid of Ashgate
Hospice.
Bells at every tower in the area which has five or more bells -
including Dronfield Parish Church - will be rung on Saturday, 11th
May, as part of the Bell A-Peal for Ashgate Hospice.
The appeal supports the Chair of NE Derbyshire District Council,
Coun Martin Thacker MBE’s, appeal for Ashgate Hospice. It grew
from a small event planned for Old Brampton Church to involving
churches in the wider area.
Susan Hall, from Old Brampton Church and Derby Diocesan
Association of Church Bell Ringers, said: “There will be over an
hour of different pieces of ringing at each tower.
“Bell-ringers will be coming from all over the country to take part,
joining ringers from Derbyshire.
“Every bell in every tower is a little bit different, and ringers enjoy
meeting up for the challenge and fun of ringing them to make a
lovely, traditional sound.”
Some of the bells ringing in NE Derbyshire are centuries
old. One dates back to about 1450, while few are Elizabethan,
many are Victorian, and some as recent as 2002. The bells
are all different sizes, the biggest ones weighing nearly a
ton!
The day’s bell-ringing timetable is as follows: 9am, Killamarsh;
9.30am, Eckington; 10.15am, Dronfield; 11am, Old Brampton; 12pm,
Wingerworth; 12.45pm, Heath; 1.30pm, North Wingfield; 2.15pm,
Clay Cross; 3pm, Morton; 4.15pm, Shirland; 4.45pm, Brackenfield;
5.30pm, Ashover.

HE Dalton Roofing team are well used to helping
businesses and homeowners get their property back in
order in the wake of high winds and storms.
In Chesterfield they have recently been carrying out projects at
United Cast Bar Ltd, one of the town’s major employers, which
was devastated by October’s floods.
One of Europe’s largest continuous cast iron bar foundries, its
production came to a halt when the floodwaters engulfed the
premises at Spital.
When major repair and restoration work began, the company
called in Dalton Roofing - a fellow ‘Chesterfield Champion’ - to
install new roofing on their laboratories and also repair their
huge roof’s centre gutters with fibre-glass.
Four members of the Dalton Roofing team were involved in the
project which required one of the Sheepbridge-based company’s
impressive cherry-picker vehicles to help with access to the
rooftop.
Said company founder Phil Dalton, MIoR: “Because of climate
change, we find ourselves taking on many different tasks than
we used to. The recent Storm Kathleen led to our phones ringing
for hours.
“It is really sad when we hear stories of how people have had
their homes and businesses affected by such weather, but it is
also the time when we can step forward and show just what we
can do.
“In the case of United Cast Bar Ltd, they contacted us because
we are both members of the Destination Chesterfield
‘Champions’ organisation and they like doing business with other
local firms.
“We were delighted to be able to help them.”
Not all tasks facing Dalton Roofing are on such a large scale.
The family-run company now has 15 teams dealing with all
aspects of roofing work from homeowners and businesses.

prevent loneliness and isolation among
older people living in Chesterfield,
Bolsover and NE Derbyshire

UNDREDS of charity supporters gathered
for the 2024 BrightLife Champions Against
Loneliness Awards at Chesterfield FC’s SMH
Group Stadium.
The Champion Business award went to Paperclip
which provides call answering and admin support
services to organisations across the UK from
Dronfield.
For over 15 years, the Christmas Lunch for Jesus
had provided a Christmas Day meal, entertainment
and gifts for lonely and isolated people at the
Whittington Moor Methodist Church.
Paperclip team members originally volunteered in
a private capacity, but as the event grew to serve
more people, it became clear that Paperclip's
business systems, skills and resources could be of
benefit.
Working with the founders of Christmas Lunch
for Jesus, Paperclip provided a dedicated phone
line to handle calls from guests, carers, volunteers
and those wishing to make cash or food
donations.
The Paperclip team logged guest contact details
noted any mobility, health or dietary issues, and
made follow up calls closer to the event.
With almost 70 people to collect in mini-buses
and private transport, logistics were a major
concern. Paperclip planned the bus routes and
advised guests of projected pick- up times and also
programmed in deliveries of meals to those whose
mobility or mental health issues meant they had to
remain at home.
Paperclip also helped with marketing, designed flyers and
posters, and liaised with third party suppliers
The 2024 Champion Against Loneliness was Tina Harris
Horner who set up the Inspiring Inkersall community group.

Tenth year of local CRY screenings
L
OCAL young people will be checked for undiagnosed
heart conditions this summer during two screening
days funded by the Dronfield-based Neil Ward Memorial
Fund.
To date, 2,500 14-35 year olds have been screened by Cardiac Risk
in the Young (CRY) with money from the fund set up by Elaine and
Ian Ward in memory of their son Neil.
Neil, aged 17, died suddenly and unexpectedly of a cardiac arrest at
a Scout meeting at Wreakes Lane in 1992.
This year’s dates are Saturday, July 6th, and Sunday, July 7th, and
the venue is Stubley Medical Centre, Stubley Drive, Dronfield.
All the money has been raised locally by supporters, with the cost
of the screening sessions rising significantly since the fund was
established in 2014.
Registration is online about six to eight weeks prior to the
screening via the CRY website: C-R-Y.org.uk
People who want to register are urged to keep checking as places
are expected to fill up quickly. Screenings are free of charge
although donations are always welcome.

EDICATION to her chosen sport is
paying off for Coal Aston’s Ella
Kenny who was one of the stars of the
recent 2024 British Gymnastics
Championships in Liverpool.
Ella, who is 11 and attends Dronfield Henry
Fanshawe School, puts in around 24 hours
of training each week at the Dronfield
Gymnastics Academy, Callywhite Lane.
Her reward was an outstanding
performance on the beam in the Aspire
section which saw her reach the
competition’s televised finals where she
claimed fifth place. Not bad at all when she
was competing against some girls who were
a year older and more experienced than her.
Ella shared the spotlight on finals day with
the likes of Olympic medalists Georgia-Mae
Fenton and Rebecca Downey. Her
performance qualified her for the 2025
British Championships and she wil also
compete in next year’s English
Championships in Telford.
Ella took her first steps in the world of
gymnastics at just four years of age.
Although her success at Liverpool came
on the beam, she prefers competing in
the floor and vault disciplines.
Said delighted dad Michael: “For a club
like Dronfield, this is a huge
achievement. Alongside her success, an
image captured of Ella was used by the
BBC in promoting their coverage of the
championships.”
The Dronfield Academy has been
established for 11 years and has around
800 members from far and wide.
Explained director and head coach
Clare Hague: “Very few people in the
country even reach the British
Championships. Ella did particularly well
because she was one of the youngest in
the competition.”
Another member, Olivia Munro from
Totley, also represented Dronfield at the
event in the 14-15 age group.

WITZERLAND might be
famous for its mountains,
clocks and cheese but badminton
will be the focus of a forthcoming
visit by Dronfeldians.
Players from the Dronfield area
have been taking part in an annual
badminton tournament held
between Sindelfingen, in Germany,
Dronfield’s twin town, and
Schaffhausen, in Switzerland, since
1988.
This year it is to be held in
Schaffhausen, with players and their
families - 22 people - due to travel
there in May.
Andrew Ronksley, from Dronfield
Badminton Town Twinning, said: “The annual Twin Town
Badminton tournament weekend all started as a serious two-day
badminton tournament.
“Over the years, the weekend’s social events have evolved and
are an important feature, giving everyone the chance to meet old
friends and make new ones, both on and off the badminton
court.”
The badminton teams taking part are made up of players with
mixed abilities and ages. In addition to badminton, past activities

have included chocolate making, wine tasting, geocache,
treasure hunts and local sightseeing.
In 2025, the tournament will be held in Dronfield, and together
with the participants from Sindelfingen and Schaffhausen, there
will be about 100 people taking part.
“We may not have the mountain scenery of Switzerland, but I
am sure we will have lots of fun and good times when Dronfield
is the host again,” added Andrew.

Reflecting on
divorce trends
Are divorces going out of fashion, or is there
something else behind the latest statistics?
I
N what seems like a surprising twist of societal
trends, divorce rates have dramatically fallen to their
lowest level in half-a-century, sparking a wave of
intrigue.
The latest Office for National Statistics data shows a total
of 80,057 divorces were granted in 2022, a significant
decrease from the 113,505 divorces recorded in the previous
year. This is the lowest number of divorces we’ve seen since
1971.
While the recent drop in divorce rates appears interesting,
it doesn’t necessarily indicate an increase in marital
happiness. Instead, it may reflect the impact of recent legal
reforms and procedural changes.

A primary consideration in interpreting this data is
the implementation of the ‘no-fault’ divorce reforms in
2022.
These changes introduced a requisite 20-week ‘cooling
off’ period before a divorce could be finalised.
Under this system, a couple wouldn’t have been eligible to
apply for the first stage of divorce, the conditional order,
until 24th August, 2022. The final order couldn’t have been
submitted before 5th October, 2022.
It is a common practice for many couples to postpone
this ultimate step until a financial settlement has been
reached.
As a result, the divorces initiated under the new system in
2022 may not be accurately represented in the statistics.
This could potentially give a misleading impression of a
decrease in divorce rates.

Teenager Ted witnessed
The widow of a Dronfield veteran has received a
medal for his involvement in nuclear weapons
testing on Christmas Island. Deborah Wain reports

ED Cockbaine was enlisted for National Service in the
RAF aged 18 and spent nine months working at a
radar station on the island, in the Pacific Ocean.
He witnessed five nuclear explosions; two involved atomic
weapons, suspended from balloons, and three were Hydrogen
bombs dropped by Valiant bombers.
Ted, who sadly died in 2021, wrote an account in 1983 of what it
felt like to experience the horror of a nuclear blast.
His time on Christmas Island had such an effect on him that, not
long after returning home, he joined the Campaign for Nuclear
Disarmament and in 1960 took part in one of the anti-nuclear
Aldermaston Marches.
The Grapple H-bomb nuclear test series was an attempt to
demonstrate that Britain had the technology to influence the
Cold War, after the atomic bomb was invented by US physicist
Robert Oppenheimer.
Hydrogen bombs were much more powerful than atomic
bombs.
Veterans and campaigners have spent decades seeking
recognition for their service during Britain's nuclear test
programme between 1952 and 1967.
Last autumn, The Nuclear Test Medal began being issued and
Ted’s widow, Ann, encouraged by the couple’s son, applied for
the medal.
Ted grew up in Oxford and did the first part of his National
Service at RAF Bempton, in
the East Riding of Yorkshire.
In 1958 he was posted to
Christmas Island, which lies
about 350km south of Java,
and was then under British
colonial control.
Ted and his colleagues
were billeted in tents in
which, on the face of it, must
have seemed like an idyllic
setting.
However, they were soon
beleaguered by land crabs
and extreme heat, and
something much more
sinister.
Said Ann: “I don’t think Ted
initially knew anything about
Ted’s Nuclear Test Medal
the purpose of him going to
Christmas Island and they certainly didn’t realise how dangerous
it was. They were guinea pigs, at the end of the day.”
Ted worked on ‘X’ site, a radar station at the north of the island,
while testing took place at South East Point, about 20 miles away
on the island’s southern tip.

Ted wrote that tests were always planned to take place from
6-7am, requiring men to leave the main camp around 2am. Those
not required to operate the radar would sit on a piece of clear
ground, listening to Eartha Kitt records, or information from
ground control over a public address system.
The men were told to don their
so-called protective clothing,
which, in reality, was a white
cotton boiler suit.
There would often be two or
three mornings like this before
an actual test took place, but on
the occasions explosions went
ahead, Ted described the
atmosphere beforehand as
being “electric”.
“Most people sat silently, odd
ones with tears in their eyes and
a few chattered incessantly,” he
wrote.
Ted went on to describe an
explosion: “As zero-hour
approached, those not working
had to lay face down, with their
head away from the blast and eyes covered by hands. “They
could not get up until after the blast.
“People working inside the darkened radar installations had to
face away from the explosion with hands over their eyes. After
locking the radar end on to the blast, to avoid damage to it,
they had then to rush to the other men before the blast came.
On one occasion, I saw one late arrival bowled over like a
skittle.
“The voice from the Tannoy saying ‘bomb gone’, brought to us

the reality of the situation. ‘5,4,3,2,1, now’. A great warmth passed
over your body. The flash of light was like looking at a
magnesium flare. Then, with eyes open, we waited for the blast.
After a minute – it seemed like ten – it arrived.
“It was like someone jumping on your back. Trees bent double,
dust and stones swirled round
and on one occasion a wooden
building collapsed.
Now we could turn round.
The fireball was climbing into
the sky, like a giant sun. The
familiar mushroom stalk
stretched from the horizon
and gradually enveloped the
fireball. Eventually, the top
flattened off into the mushroom
shape. This was still visible 12
hours later.”
After one explosion, it rained
afterwards, and everyone was
advised to stay in their tents.
Ted knew this was because of
the danger of nuclear fall-out.
Ted’s account ends with the
following reflection: “In the foreword to a souvenir booklet issued
at the time, it says – ‘...it is a privilege to be able to witness one
of the great man-made miracles of this century, those of us who
saw one or more of the experiments will remember the fact and
be proud of it’.
“I remembered the fact and joined the Aldermaston March in
1960.”
After National Service, Ted worked as a customs officer and met
Ann, who hails from Thorne, Doncaster, while working in Goole.

The couple married in 1965 and moved to Dronfield
in 1968. Ted went on to become a teacher and
remained in that job until his retirement. He was
involved in the British Nuclear Test Veterans’
Association at the time he wrote his account.
More than 22,000 British servicemen participated in
the British and United States' nuclear tests and cleanups
between 1952 and 1965.
Ann said: “The powers that be, the observers and
scientists, had all sorts of protection against radiation
but the men, like Ted, didn’t.
“Many died in their 50s from cancers - a legacy
from the radiation they received. Shockingly, their
children too suffered ten times the normal number of
birth defects from the genetic damage caused to
their fathers by exposure to radiation. Genetic
changes continue to be passed down through
subsequent generations.”
Ann said Ted had a long-standing wound on his leg
which he attributed to the effects of radiation.
Ted died of vascular dementia, aged 83.
The Nuclear Test Medal features King Charles III on
the front and an atom surrounded by olive branches
on the rear. Its ribbon colours are white, yellow, black
and red, including a lighter blue for the sky and
ocean to represent the Pacific.

Look for exotic newts in
your garden
An adult Alpine newt discovered by Ian in his
garden and, right, the protected great crested newt

exciting, creatures which may be in your garden
I
HAVE mentioned newts previously and highlighted my
suspicion that they are capable of decimating frog
populations.
We do have three native species of newt, and all occur across our
region. Most common is the smooth newt with the female slightly
larger than the male, but the latter sports a crest during the breeding
season and a yellowy-orange belly.
The adults range from around thee to four inches in length and their
skin is smooth and moist. The dark-coloured males with zagged,
breeding-season crests are frequently mistaken for crested newts
which they are not. Indeed, they are much smaller than their speciallyprotected
cousins.
The baby newts, called larvae, are tiny, almost translucent creatures
and when recently hatched, have gills to breathe with. These can be
present in your pond without you ever knowing
unless you look very hard.
Furthermore, all the newts lay single eggs, usually
curled inside a folded bit of pondweed. Again, this
means that unlike frogs with their massed spawn and
toads with their strings of eggs, newts are not obvious
and can arrive with imported plants or other pond
materials.
The least common native newt is the palmate which
is small, and has a more pointed nose, no crest at all,
and in the case of the male, there is a needle-like
protrusion at the end of the tail. This is used during
courtship as the male wafts pheromones towards the
female and she is perhaps enticed by the movement.
Palmate newt males have webbed rear feet.
They are restricted often to moorland fringe ponds,
but I used to have them in a wildlife garden when
I lived at Charnock on the edge of the Moss
Valley, although historically, that would have been

close to the moorland edge.
The specially-protected species is the
great crested or ‘warty’ newt, and this is
subject to both European and British
legislation. These animals are impressively
large, up to five or six inches, maybe more, with a rough, dark skin on
the upper back, head and tail, and bright yellow-orange underside
with black spots.
In breeding condition, the male has a distinctive crest along the
back and then also along the tail. You may mistake other species for
crested newts, but if you do see one, they are unmistakable.
However, I did think I had great crested newts in my garden,
although they didn’t seem ‘right’, and the larvae in particular, were
odd. It turns out that we have a population of the exotic alpine newt
introduced and naturalised and apparently spreading across the
region.
Similar to, but smaller than, great crested newts, alpines are dark
and warty on top and yellow underneath but lacking the distinctive
black spots. The larvae are large and dark black.
I first came across these whilst clearing out my
ponds one winter and the adults were hibernating in
the mud. They are exciting to find, and I now have
records away from Norton and as far as Greenhill.
So, if you think you have them do let me know and,
ideally, send a photograph. They are up to about fourand-a-half
inches long and have stunningly marbled
markings. The downside is that alpine newts will clear
out a pond of frog tadpoles in about a day. It is illegal
to release them into the wild.

physical activity

ITH exam season approaching and stress levels
on the rise, it is common for teenagers’ mental
health to worsen, with a reported spike in the number of
teenagers calling ChildLine with concerns about exam
worries.
This month I talk to Issy Waugh, a 15-year-old who knows all
about what it takes to balance the pressures of school work
with a busy sporting schedule.
Issy is a triathlete who trains every day and has done since
she was very young. She used to run together with her sister,
eventually progressing to swimming as well.
Being surrounded by fellow sports people, Issy was inspired
by her peers who were triathletes and added running to her
training regime.
She soon realised that she enjoyed combining these three
sports and since then has completed many races, her proudest
achievement being running for England and achieving second
place!
Issy made it clear that her training not only supports her
physically, allowing her to win numerous races, but also is
successful in improving her mental health.
As a GCSE student, Issy is familiar with revision and the feeling
of stress that comes with it. She explained how exercising is
amazing for the feeling of escapism from school work and
boosting her mood and mindset, allowing her to maximise her
productivity when revising.

On the run... Issy Waugh strides out
She also emphasised how beneficial it can be to exercise with
friends, as it can be a great social activity, as well as the
importance of being outdoors and away from a screen while
you do sport.
Although the feeling that follows exercise is amazing, Issy
made it clear that - like most of us - she doesn’t always feel like
exercising. However, she always remains committed as she
“thinks of the bigger picture”, always keeping in mind the
feeling after exercising.
With the shocking report from the World Health Organisation
of over 80% of adolescents not meeting the requirements of 60
minutes exercise a day, I believe the pledge to get teenagers
more active is hugely important, especially ahead of exam
season.
This increase in movement should support their physical and
mental health and should help to keep the stress levels at a
minimum.
As Issy said, it doesn’t have to be big, just get out and move
your body.
And don’t forget, if you see Issy on the Olympic podium one
day, she gave her first interview right here!

Civic Centre:
£1/2million
regeneration
plan agreed
DRONFIELD Town Council agreed to
support proposals put forward by the
Project Steering group (DTC and NE
Derbyshire District Council) to renew
the public realm aspects of the Civic
Centre area.
The final design includes a new
town square, event spaces, improved
pedestrian links, crossings, new street
furniture including benches and bins.
Enhanced landscaping will see
resurfaced Tarmac areas, re-lined
parking bays, new trees and planters.
Coun Alex Dale,
a member of the
steering group,
commented: “We
are delighted to
take advantage
of this unique
opportunity
offered by the
Government’s
levelling up fund
to transform our
Coun Alex Dale
Civic Centre. The
project will
provide a high quality public space
for Dronfield residents to enjoy and
also encourage and support
business investment and help
deliver long-term economic
growth.”
The project is funded by the public
realm element of the UK Shared
Prosperity Fund and is the first phase
in a potential three-phase
redevelopment, which may include
the retail units that are privately
owned if plans come forward from the
owner.
The programme deadline for
completion of this initial phase is 31st
March, 2025, and follows a
comprehensive consultation in
May/June 2021.
Supporting our runners
THE April Town Council meeting
saw councillors agree to grant
permission to Dronfield Town FC
to use Cliffe Park as part of the
route for their Dronfield Town 10k
and Fun Run, which will be held
on 6th May.
The Town Council also granted
permission to Dronfield Running
Club to use Hilltop Park for the Big
Dipper Half Marathon, which will be
held on 15th September - entries
open soon!
Councillors offered Dronfield
Running Club the use of Dronfield Woodhouse Recreation Ground for a Junior
Parkrun.
In addition to the events above, the Town Council also supports the Dronfield 10k
and Fun Run, centred around Sindelfingen Park each year. The 2024 race will be run
on 28th April, attended by the Town Mayor.
Yellow lines and resurfacing
DRONFIELD Town Council received reports from Derbyshire County Council of
new traffic regulation orders to come into force in and around Dronfield.
No waiting restrictions or double yellow lines are to be installed on parts of the
following roads: Main Road at Holmesfield, Cowley Lane, Sheffield Road (junction
Snape Hill Lane), Burns Drive, Shakespeare Crescent, various parts of Callywhite
Lane, Hallowes Drive, Highgate Drive, Hallowes Rise, Longcroft Road, Smithycroft.
School zig-zag markings are also to be installed at Smithycroft.
Coun Marie Ireland, Chair of Road Safety, commented: “We welcome the addition
of these parking restrictions. Many of these are near junctions and are being
installed to improve road and pedestrian safety. Others such as Burns Drive will
also help keep the road passable for emergency vehicles and refuse collection.”
Notice was also received to resurface 850m of Chesterfield Road between Dronfield
and Unstone. These works are part of major improvements to Derbyshire roads and
pavements through the County Council’s capital investment programme.
Contractors will put up yellow signs giving times and dates of the road closure. The
work will mainly be carried out 6pm-midnight to reduce inconvenience to residents.
Creation of Community Orchard
DRONFIELD Town Council has agreed to the creation of a Community Orchard,
which will be located on a small section of land located between Poplar Close,
Chestnut Close, Highgate Drive and Greenacres Close.
The creation of the orchard will begin with the planting of 12 fruit trees, which will
be a variety of apple, plum, cherry and pear.
The area will be managed by the Town Council and the Community Orchard will
be open and accessible at all times. It will be a place where people can relax and
enjoy the fruits of the harvest.

In return, you could ask for help learning a musical
instrument, using the internet, or learning to crochet,
or with some basic DIY – the list of swaps is
endless!
Natalie Evans, development officer for NE
Derbyshire and Bolsover, said: “In 2023 we signed
up 76 individual members, 34 organisational
members and had 1,653 hours of swaps. In fact the
first year has gone so quickly!
“The variety of swaps has been amazing and its
been great to see members helping each other. We
are always looking for more members as this will
generate more swaps on offer.”
Individuals over the age of 18 and organisations
can join. Everybody in the swap has to be a member
and all swaps are covered by insurance, provided
the correct procedure has been followed. You only
do swaps you want to do, when you want to do
them, so there is no pressure.
Swaps can be one-to-one, or groups (such as knit
and natter) and community swaps (such as litterpicking).
It’s a great way of bringing people and the
community together.
To say ‘thank you’ to members, first year
celebrations will be held in May but these are also
open to anyone who wants to find out more
information or become involved :
The events will be held at Bolsover Adult Education
Centre on 15th May, 11am -2pm; and The Barn,
Dronfield, on Friday, 3rd May, 10am-noon.

Dartathon triumph
IFTY-eight players competed in the first
F Dronfield Dartathon, staged at Hilltop Sports &
Social Club at Easter.
The competition was so popular that a qualifying event
had to be held in order to whittle the number down to 32
for the finals day.
Eventual winner was Dronfield’s Chris Lacey who
received a £400 prize, together with a trophy which he
retains for a year. In the final he defeated Matt Allsop.
Luke Littler fan Jamie Sapsford, aged just 14, impressed
in reaching the quarter-final stage.
Said organiser Dick Armitage: “We had competitors from
Sheffield, Eckington and Bolsover, but mainly from the
Dronfield Eye area.
“There was a tremendous ‘Ally Pally’-style atmosphere
and we are already making plans to turn the Dartathon
into an annual event.”

SOMETIMES, going bolder with style and colour can be a
little daunting.
But a couple who went down that route with bespoke
wardrobes from Supafit are thrilled with the result.
Mr and Mrs Summerfield have been upgrading their
Dronfield home throughout. And their choice for the masterbedroom
was four-panel contemporary shaker furniture in a
focal colour popular with interior designers; Kombu Green.
The Summerfields also selected satin brass ribbed halfmoon

Mrs Summerfield said she had been looking online for
design inspiration prior to giving Supafit a call. So she had
plenty to talk through with Supafit’s Jenna, who visited to
measure up and discuss options.
Next, it was an exciting visit to the showroom to make the
final decisions on colours and styles.
Mrs Summerfield said: “I think it is sometimes easier to go
for neutrals.
“But we love the green and we have chosen a statement
wallpaper featuring that colour for the opposite wall.”
As Supafit needed to work around a beam in the bedroom, it
was decided a shorter unit should house a full-length mirror,
which proved to be an ideal solution.

Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment
Dental disease is one of the most common health complaints of pets. Up to 15% of pets of any
age will have dental disease; this increases up to 80% in pets over 9 years old!
When your vet or vet nurse recommends dental treatment, this will be in the form of a COHAT.
A COHAT must be performed under a full general anaesthetic. As standard we include a preoperative
blood test and IV drip during the procedure. Your pet will have a full series of oral x-rays, a complete
oral exam, dental charting, and a full mouth clean to remove any tartar build-up. Based on the results

Couple’s new gardening Peak

RONFIELD’S Murry and Caroline Newbury are the new
proprietors of one of the country’s longest-established
garden centres.
They have taken over the running of Hope Valley Garden
Centre at Bamford where they have already initiated a number
of improvements and greatly added to stock levels in time for
spring and summer planting.
The couple have more than 25 years experience in the
horticulture industry and they have retained existing team
members at the extensive Peak District centre.
Now they are looking forward to welcoming customers old
and new to their new venture - particularly friends from the
Dronfield area.
Hope Valley Garden Centre - alongside the road to Hope and
Castleton - is one of the oldest in the country, being established
by Clifford Proctor in 1947. It has recently been owned by Emma
Proctor who has entrusted Murry and Caroline with the running
and development of the business.
You will discover everything for your garden from seeds and
colourful bedding plants through to roses, shrubs, trees, pond
plants, garden furniture, statues and planters.
Planned developments include the introduction of a customer
loyalty scheme, a new e-commerce website, the development
of a large indoor showroom which will greatly increase the
choices and range that will be on offer. The couple also plan to
run various customer workshops which will be bookable online
or in store.
Murry explained that the couple were en-route to Buxton
when they called in at the centre to take a look around and
discovered the business was on the market.

S a proud Sheffielder, I always make a point
of inspecting the cutlery I eat with - especially
as I share my surname with generations of the
most famous local manufacturers.
Sadly these days, you can eat in the smartest places
around the city and never see those famous three
words: ‘Made in Sheffield’.
So step forward and take a bow the people at The
Herd, Woodseats, who recently made my day by
offering me a butter-knife which was not only Sheffieldmade,
but also displayed the name ‘Firth’!
Talking of cutlery, my family and I have taken a liking
to lunchtimes at David Mellor, Hathersage - the rather
smart cafe behind the village’s prestigious cutlery works.
What makes this place memorable - besides its exquisite food -
is the display of street furniture invented and designed by David
Mellor more than 60 years ago.
This Sheffielder transformed the look of high streets the length
and breadth of the country, so that’s why at Hathersage you can
dine alongside traffic lights, bus shelters, street lamps, bollards, a
postbox and one of those famous old yellow litter-bins which
were once found throughout Sheffield city centre.
Locally, The Hyde Park at Hilltop Road continues to offer fine
food every day of the week, but it is particularly popular on
Sundays when it offers one of the best value-for-money carveries
in the area. It’s served throughout the afternoon until 5.30pm
too, but a word of warning - book first!
Peppercorn built its reputation with a highly-acclaimed
restaurant at Abbeydale in Sheffield but now the business
is firmly installed in the fabulous surroundings of Dronfield’s
Hallowes Golf Club.
The venue offers a daytime menu with ‘Charlie’s Chippy’ on
Fridays and a weekly Sunday roast dinner.
Summer has arrived at New Leaf Plant Centre - but it’s not only
a venue for gardeners. New Shoots Coffee Shop serves meals
and tasty snacks throughout the day from 9am (10am on
Sundays) and attracts regular customers from far and wide.

Best foot forward for fitness

ULL on your hiking boots, fill a flask and start
your fitness regime this Spring as the
Chesterfield Area Walking Festival returns for another
year.
The annual festival takes place from Saturday 11th to
Sunday 19th May and there are 42 walks across the week,
including gentle strolls, family activities and big days out
for seasoned hikers.
Coun Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s
cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy,
said: “This is a fantastic event with some great walks
that will help you explore our borough and the
surrounding area.
“We’re proud to be supporting this event because it is
suitable for everyone – helping to bring people to the area
and is enjoyed by many of our residents.”
Walks for all abilities are available to enjoy including family
strolls like the Bumblebee Safari, where you can find out more
about these important pollinators, or the Teddy Bear’s Picnic
Boat Trip which includes a ride aboard the John Varley
narrowboat.
Walks focussed on history include a tour of historic
Chesterfield pubs, an exploration of the symbolism in Spital
Cemetery, a guided walk discovering the history of the
Avenue Country Park, a tour of Bolsover with a historic
Baroness and the Chesterfield Museum stores will be opened
for two tours.
For the more experienced hiker, the 2024 festival includes
a few strenuous walks like the Creswell Crags circular, a route
tracking the source of the River Rother and a hike from
Holmebrook Valley Park to Linacre Reservoirs.
Many of the popular walks from previous years will be
returning, such as the 34-mile Chesterfield Round Walk, but
there are also some great new additions.
All festival walks will be led by trained guides who know
the history, wildlife, and the best countryside to walk
through.
The Chesterfield Area Walking Festival is run in partnership by
Chesterfield Borough Council, North East Derbyshire District
Council and Bolsover District Council.
Most of the planned walks will be free, but booking is essential
unless stated otherwise.

popular? Is it the storyline? The scenery? The
costumes? The props? The action?
Most theatregoers would say all of those things – but topping
the list would always be the singing and the dancing.
And that’s the starting point for Dronfield Musical Theatre
Group’s next production - a theatrical and cabaret supper
experience simply called The Magic of Musicals.
Director Gavin Ward has put together a compilation of show
songs which demonstrate the sheer breadth and scope of
musicals from Broadway to the West End.
For more than five decades, DMTG has been putting on popular
and award-winning shows both new and old, and for The Magic
of the Musicals cabaret and buffet, the group has put together a
toe-tapping selection of the very best. And the £12 ticket price
also includes an interval buffet served at tables. There is also a
licensed bar.
The group’s last musical compilation was a sell-out and this
year’s brand-new version is on course to be just as popular.
Musical director for the production is Judith Haywood and in
charge of choreography in Andrea Powell.

Chesterfield Crafters Bazaar is an annual market for crafters to
sell their surplus materials, tools, magazines, and books
alongside like-minded creatives from across the area.
The next Crafters Bazaar will take place on Sunday, 19th May,
from 10am-4pm, on Chesterfield Market.
The bazaar is organised by Transition Chesterfield, a voluntary
community group trying to help people in Chesterfield
moveaway from fossil fuel dependency to become more
resilient, sustainable, and locally self-sufficient.
The project’s Sheila Curzon said: “We encourage people who
like crafting to go through their stash of craft materials and sell
their surplus unwanted items on to other local crafters. The aim
is to keep materials in circulation and to stop them going to
landfill.
“We have a very willing band of volunteers who give their time
and energy for free to help organise this event.
“Also we have a large group of mostly amateur crafters who
take stalls at Crafters Bazaar.
“Last year over 50 stalls were booked for the one event. So
far nearly 40 have asked for a stall this year.”

hold a ‘Memory Marketplace’ at Chesterfield FC’s SMH
Group stadium.
The free event on Wednesday, May 1st, will gather together
local organisations that provide support for people living with
dementia and their families.
Wendy Blunt, from Chesterfield Borough Council, who started
the group in 2016, said: “At the Memory Market we hope to
make people more aware of this important work that is going
on in Chesterfield to support families.
“If you are living with dementia, know someone with dementia
or would just like to support us then do come along, have a
chat and join us for a free buffet lunch.
“There will be several activities too, including a sing-a-long
session.”
