As the number of rooftops grow
in the city’s newest planned
community south of Highway
50, many wonder about plans for
expanding medical services and
facilities to meet the demand.
Luckily, three of the region’s largest
health care providers—Dignity
Health, UC Davis, and Kaiser—are
all making plans to ensure residents’
health needs are met.
Both Dignity Health and UC Davis
have purchased property within the
new growth area to expand their
medical services. Kaiser already
has a large medical building and
an ambulatory surgery facility
in Folsom; they also own land at
Palladio off Iron Point Road for
possible future expansion.
A new Dignity medical building will
be underway soon on a 31-acre
site at the corner of East Bidwell
Street and Alder Creek Parkway.
As part of Phase 1, the building will
house many of the local Dignity
physicians as well as ambulatory
surgery and advanced imaging. It is
estimated the facility will open in
late 2025 or early 2026. President
of Mercy Folsom, Lisa Hausmann,
says Dignity is looking at bringing
other services to Folsom, too,
including infusion and oncology.
Phase 2 includes plans for an acute
care hospital with 100-300 beds.
Mercy Hospital of Folsom, which
is the city’s current hospital, has
100 beds. According to Hausmann,
there’s room for it to expand in the
future; or, when the new hospital
is complete, it might become a
specialty center.
UC Davis Board of Regents recently
approved Phase 1 construction on
its 34.5-acre parcel located at East
Bidwell Street and Highway 50. This
medical building will be 100,000
square feet and house physician
offices, a pharmacy, and an infusion
suite in addition to radiology
and imaging. It is estimated that
construction will start in early 2024
with opening scheduled for 2025.
Plans noted in the Environmental
Impact Report for the UC Davis site
include a micro-hospital of 30 beds,
an ambulatory surgery center, and
a 100-room hotel; the timeline for
these facilities is 15-20 years.
While not anticipating new facilities
in Folsom, Kaiser is “committed
to meeting the health care needs
of Folsom and its surrounding
communities today and well into
the future,” says Kim Menzel,
senior vice president and area
manager of Kaiser Permanente
Roseville. “We regularly reevaluate
our capital planning projections,
subject to several factors, including
membership growth in the area.
Regarding Roseville, while we
have a Development Agreement
to expand the Roseville Medical
Center, including a new hospital
tower, new development is also
subject to a number of factors...
It remains our intention to build a
state-of-the-art medical center at
the Railyards that represents how
health care will be provided in the
future. Due to our ongoing internal
planning processes, we can’t
provide detailed information about
the design, scope, and schedule for
the project,” she says.
