500K Immigrants per year by 2025
Edmonton(ATB): The
federal government is
planning a massive
increase in the number
of immigrants entering
Canada, with a goal of
bringing in 500,000
people per year by
2025.
Immigration Minister
Sean Fraser saying the
move is necessary to
ensure Canada’s
economic prosperity.
The announcement
signals a significant
increase from the
405,000 immigrants
that came to Canada
last year and the
465,000 expected to
arrive next year.
Canadian industries
are facing a significant
labour shortage. About
one million jobs are
vacant across the
country.
The new plan puts an
emphasis on
increasing the number
of immigrants who will
be admitted based on
their work skills or
experience over the
next three years.
This news comes
after new census
figures released last
month revealed that
immigrants and
permanent residents
now account for 23 per
cent of the population
— an all-time high.
Statistics Canada said
that recent immigrants
— those who arrived
between 2016 and
2021 — are
y o u n g e r o n
average than the rest of
the Canadian
population and have
been critical to filling
many jobs in the
Canadian labour market.
From 2016 to 2021,
immigrants accounted
for four-fifths of Canada’s
labour force growth. A
large share of recent
immigrants were
selected for their ability
to contribute to
Canada’s economy.
More than half of recent
immigrants — 748,120
of the 1.3 million
admitted to Canada
between 2016 and 2021
— entered Canada
under the economic
category.
The Business Council
of Canada
(BCC) welcomed the
federal government’s
announcement,
saying that employers
across the country are
struggling to fill jobs.
The BCC said in a
media statement that
it wants to see the
number of immigrants
admitted under the
e c o n o m i c
category increase
from just over half to
65 per cent of the
total.
“Every job that is not
filled represents one
less person
contributing to
Canada’s economic
growth and one less
person paying taxes
to support Canada’s
social infrastructure,”
said BCC president
and CEO Goldy Hyder
in a media statement.

Contractors who repaired Morbi bridge were not
qualified for such work, prosecution tells court
Morbi, (ATB) The contractors
who carried out
repairs of the ill-fated
suspension bridge at
Morbi in Gujarat were
not qualified to carry out
such jobs, the prosecution
told a court here.
While the bridge flooring
was replaced, its
cable was not replaced
and it could not take
the weight of the
changed flooring, the
prosecution, citing a
forensic report, told the
magistrate's court on
Tuesday. Chief Judicial
Magistrate M J Khan
remanded four of the
arrested accused -- two
managers of the
OREVA Group and two
sub-contractors who
had repaired the bridge
-- in police custody till
Saturday. The court remanded
five other arrested
men, including
security guards and
ticket booking clerks,
in judicial custody as
police did not seek their
custody, prosecutor H S
Panchal said. The four
accused remanded in
police custody were
OREVA managers
Dipak Parekh and
Dinesh Dave, and repairing
contractors
Prakash Parmar and
Devang Parmar, hired
by the OREVA Group.
Citing a Forensic Science
Laboratory (FSL)
report, Panchal told the
court that forensic experts
believed the main
cable of the bridge
snapped because of
the weight of the new
flooring.
"Though the FSL report
was presented in a
sealed cover, it was
mentioned during the
remand plea that
cables of the bridge
were not replaced during
the renovation and
only flooring was
changed...the weight of
the bridge increased
due to the four-layered
aluminium sheets for
the flooring and the
cable snapped due to
that weight," Panchal
told reporters.
"Despite that, these
contractors were given
the bridge repair work
in 2007 and then in
2022. So the accused's
custody was needed to
find out what was the
reason for choosing
them and at whose instance
they were chosen,"
the prosecutor
said.

Two days of dance performances, November 4th
& 6th, and one day to unpack it all on the 26th
Two days of dance performances,
November 4th & 6th, and one day to
unpack it all on the 26th. The CanNatyam
classical dance program promises an
exclusive experience for all who attend the
Thousand Faces Festival’s 10th
Anniversary celebration.
These dances are athletic, visually
stunning, and epic, in the original sense of
the word! If you like heroes, gods, horror
and love stories, then you’ll appreciate
these art forms. If you want to see gender
parity, look no further. If you want to see
gender bending, there are no limits to the
power of creation expressed in this art. All
the while, it remains family friendly even
as the stories grapple with invasions, wars
and changing fashions. South Asia has
been sharing its amazing stories for
multiple millennia through dance.
While the roots go back before time, space
and causation, shoots have made their
way across the oceans to North West
Canada. In the past ten years, local,
national and international dancers have
found their way to the Thousand Faces
Festival that celebrates stories based in
mythology. Hence, the name CanNatyam.
Indian classical dance may have found its
adopted home in this theatrical space.
Long-time festival artist Malavika
Venkatsubbaiah, choreographer and
artistic director of the Natyam Ensemble,
is the curator of this program. The concept
is to build a platform where Canadian
dancers can develop and present
seasonal, full length professional
repertoire. at a standard of best practices
to tour a performance anywhere worldwide
with universal appreciation.
This flagship program will present five
classical art forms: Mohiniattam, Odissi,
Kathak, Bharathanatyam and, for the first
time in Edmonton, Kathakali.
After years of training and
performing inside heritage communities,
these dance companies are branching out
to the prospect of a wider audience that
will see a traditional performance in a
theatrical context, not a temple, not a royal
palace but with all the influences available
to our contemporary, technological
society.
Along with the performances,
Thousand Faces will hold an online panel
discussion with Alberta Dance Alliance that
will take a behind the scenes, examining
the challenges and opportunities for
presenting traditional dance in current
times. For details visit thousandfaces.ca

Lula back at helm
The win by the narrowest of
margins for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
in Brazil’s polarising presidential election
marks a stunning political comeback
for the leftist leader. In his victory
speech, the 77-year-old former union
leader described it as his resurrection.
His two-term 2003-2010 presidency
was followed by 580 days in
prison for corruption convictions that
were later annulled. Lula was barred
from contesting the election in 2018.
‘Trump of the Tropics’ Jair Bolsonaro
is the first incumbent to lose a presidential
election in the country’s 34-
year-old democratic history. The significance
of the result lies in the rebuke
for his fiery far-right populism. No wonder,
to pre-empt any protests and to
ensure in an apparent attempt that the
result is not challenged, US President
Joe Biden came out strongly to endorse
Lula’s mandate and declared
the elections free, fair and credible.
The outcome should mark an
end to a bruising election year. Instead,
Brazil is bracing for sulking
Bolsonaro supporters refusing to accept
the result, echoing Donald
Trump’s electoral fraud rhetoric after
losing to Biden. Credited with social
welfare measures, Lula enjoyed 83
per cent approval rating when he demitted
office. The graft charges made
a huge dent in his popularity. Still, an
easier run for a third term was expected
given Bolsonaro’s fraught
legacy of presiding over a stumbling
economy and exacerbating the health
crisis during the pandemic. The
tantalisingly close race shows the
deep divisions. Striking a conciliatory
note, Lula has promised to unite the
country, but he has his task cut out.
One vow that Lula is most likely
to deliver on is to overturn Bolsonaro’s
contentious pro-gun policies and
weak protection of the Amazon
rainforest. His election coincides with
a second run of the pink tide in Latin
America, with leftist Presidents
elected to power in other neighbouring
countries. For the leftists in India, it’s
an occasion to reflect on their diminishing
relevance.
