2023: Ortom cautions against defacing
of opponents' campaign materials

GOVERNOR
Samuel Ortom of Benue State
has warned those destroying
the campaign posters,
billboards and other campaign
materials of political
opponents in the state to
desist or face the wrath of
the law.
The Governor said his
government would not
tolerated such even from any
supporter of his party the
Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, or opposition political
parties because he believes
in ensuring a level playing
field for all.
The Governor, in a
statement issued in Makurdi
by his Special Adviser Media
and Publicity, Terver Akase,
stated that democracy
guarantees freedom for
everyone to campaign
without harassment or
molestation.
The Governor said, "As a
government, we will not allow
anyone destroy the campaign
posters, billboards and other

ABUJA—THE International
Labour Organisation, ILO,
has appointed the President,
National Industrial Court of
Nigeria, NICN, Justice Benedict
Kanyip, as a member of the
Committee of Experts in the
Application of Conventions and
Recommendations, CEACR.
Some legal luminaries have
contended that the appointment
of Justice Kanyip by the ILO to
serve in CEACR was another
testimony that Labour
Jurisprudence in Nigeria under
his (Kanyip) leadership is on a
match for greatness.
They said "as the head of the
nation's Labour Court, Justice
Kanyip's selfless contributions
and erudition to labour
jurisprudence and national
development are exceptional and
have been aptly recognized by
this appointment."
Recall that since its existence
96 years ago, the ILO Committee
of Experts has had persons from
Nigeria including a former Chief
Justice of Nigeria, Sir
Adetokunbo Ademola who
served as Chairman of the
campaign materials of political
opponents in Benue state.

Sokoto gov urges Army to sustain

S OKOTO—GOVERNOR
Aminu Tambuwal of
Sokoto State has urged the
Nigerian Army to continue its
moves on ensuring
professionalism,
improvement of personnel's
capacity for better service
delivery and operations.
Tambuwal spoke yesterday
in Sokoto while declaring
open the 2022 Second
Regimental Sergeant Majors,
RSMs, convention tagged "
Capacity Building for RSMs
in the Nigerian Army for
Enhanced Regimentation ".
He
described

The judicial decisions of Justice
Kanyip are always very
comprehensive, unequivocally
clear, objective and predictable
on the side of justice, according
to law. These qualities are the
signatures of Justice Kanyip in
many landmark Judgments that
protect established labour rights
and promote other employment
rights anchored on international
labour standards, which have
been incorporated into Section
254C(1) and (2) of the
Constitution by virtue of the
2010 amendments.
Within the constraints of the
existing social system that
weighs against the working class,
many of the judicial decisions of
Justice Kanyip may be used
either as a sword or a shield in
advancing or protecting labour
and employment rights.

importance of RSMs and

in training them for improved

the acquisition of more
equipment and platforms, the
army is well positioned to win
the war against insurgency,
banditry and other violent
crimes in the country. RSMs
are crucial, being the
custodians of regimentations,
ethics and discipline in the
Nigerian Army.
" These efforts are aimed at
improving and repositioning
the service delivery
requirement of these very
important Nigerian army
welfare facilities," Yahaya
said.
He reiterated that the
Nigerian Army was making
drastic efforts to provide
secured, affordable and
reliable accommodation as
part of efforts to cater for the
welfare needs of army
personnel.
Peter Obi knows that he can’t
and won’t win, by Soludo
CHUKWUMA SOLUDO,
governor of Anambra, has
said Peter Obi, presidential
candidate of the Labour Party, LP,
will not win in the 2023 general
election.
Soludo said this yesterday in
an article titled ‘History Beckons
and I Will Not Be Silent (Part 1)’.
The development comes amid
criticism of the Anambra
governor over his recent comment
on the worth of investment Obi
made for the state when the latter
was governor.
In a recent interview on
Channels Television, Soludo had
said the investments by Obi for
Anambra are now “worth next to
nothing”.
Reacting to the criticism, Soludo
said the LP candidate is well aware
of the “game” he is playing,
adding that with LP, Obi does not
have the necessary structure in
place to win the presidency.
“Let’s be clear: Peter Obi knows
that he can’t and won’t win. He
knows the game he is playing,
and we know too; and he knows
that we know,” the article reads
in part.

ABUJA—THE
Government yesterday
proposed a mandatory eight
weeks course for all newly
elected labour leaders in the
country at the Michael Imoudu
National Institute of Labour
Studies, MINILS.
According to a statement by
Head, Press and Public
Relations, Federal Ministry of
Labour and Employment, Olajide
Oshundun, the Minister claimed
some union leaders are
disobeying his ministry and even
the labour laws of the country,
because they lack the basic
training on the laws and their
application.
The statement quoted Ngige
as saying, "You know a lot of
people who answer labour and
union leaders are not trained in
the labour laws of the country
including those who are
Professors. They disrespect
labour laws. They disrespect the
labour ministry, labour
committees and everybody.
"So, we want to upgrade
MINILS and make it mandatory
that once you are elected as
Comrade President or Secretary
General or whatever, you must
go there for a course that will last
not less than eight weeks, to get
certificated.
"Otherwise, you see people
who are educated and
knowledgeable and they are
telling you that Section 43 of the
Trade Dispute Act, TDA, 2004,
Laws of the Federation of Nigeria
is not applicable to them or
anybody. How do you say that?
You are insulting the parliaments
that are making laws.
"You are registered as a union
and there is the Trade Union Act
(2005) as amended and yet, you
say that it should not apply to
you and that you cannot tender
an account of check off dues that
you collected. The same Trade
Union Act permits the union to
deduct the check off dues from
the salaries of its membership.
The same Act says that the
union must be audited every year
and the audited account
submitted to the Registrar of
Trade Unions, RTU.
"It is just like the Independent
National Electoral Commission,
INEC, that registers political
parties. If you apply to be
registered as a political party,
INEC will register you but will
ask you to tender the audited
accounts of your party every
year. You must conform as a
political party, but if you default,
the commission will penalise
you, according to the law. There
is no two ways about it."
FG urged to revive textile industry

Government has been urged
to revive the comatose textile
sector in Nigeria to enable Adire
producers and others get raw
materials that will save foreign
exchange for the country.
The call was made by members

Adire Batik and tie and dye fabrics
