FROM THE MANAGER
IAN EVATT
DURING THE EARLY STAGES OF THE COMPETITION THIS SEASON,
I SAID THAT THE PAPA JOHNS TROPHY OFFERS A REALISTIC AND
TANGIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR CLUBS IN LEAGUE ONE AND LEAGUE
TWO TO PLAY IN A CUP FINAL AT WEMBLEY.
Moments like this should be
grasped whenever they present
themselves because they create
lifelong memories not only for the
players and staff, but supporters
too. My view hasn’t changed.
The other competitions like The FA
Cup and Carabao Cup do create
cup runs, but more often than not
it’s the ‘Big Four’ who contest the
finals. The Papa Johns Trophy is
different and it’s a competition that
we most certainly want to go all the
way in.
All those who remain in it will be
feeling the same and tonight’s
opponents, Barrow, will also want
to get themselves in the draw for
the next round.
I’d like to take this opportunity
to welcome Pete Wild, his staff
and players and those who have
travelled down to support Barrow.
I have nothing but fond memories
of my time up there and will always
be grateful for the opportunity they
gave me as a manager.
That said, we’ve got a job to do
tonight and we’ll be doing our
utmost to win the game against
what will be a tough opponent
who’ll be looking for a scalp.
You only have to look at Rotherham
United last season to see the
benefits of cup success. They
progressed all the way to the
final, won the trophy and then
carried that form into their league
campaign which saw them earn
promotion to the Championship.
It’s an old cliche, but winning
breeds confidence and builds up
momentum.
The manner of Saturday’s victory
at Fleetwood exemplifies the
quality, belief and spirit we have
running through the squad - key
ingredients to provide that spark
you sometimes need to get a run
going.
The players had to do it the hard
way but it was all down to them.
They just never give up.
We - the coaching staff - draw the
outline and they go on and paint
the picture, and I thought the way
they performed was excellent.
There’s a huge camaraderie in the
dressing room and we love being
at this club. We are massively
proud of our fan base, who back
us to the hilt, and we just want to
make them proud of us and I think
we did that at the weekend.
Although we went about it the
hard way, I don’t think anyone can
be disappointed with the way we
played.
Sometimes you don’t get what you
deserve, sometimes you do. And
we absolutely did that on Saturday.
On Wednesday evening, our youth
team will host Accrington Stanley in
the second round of the FA Youth
Cup. I want to take this opportunity
to wish the lads well and I hope as
many of you as possible will come
down to the University of Bolton
Stadium to cheer them on. The
game kicks off at 7pm and fans can
pay at the turnstiles (£3 for adults
and £1 for concessions).
Finally, I just want to lend my
support to the Big Bolton Carol
Concert world record attempt here
at the stadium. Taking place on the
evening of Monday 12 December,
and with your help, the club is
hoping to surpass the current
record for the largest gathering
of carol singers, which stands at
25,272 people.
Myself and the lads will be there
and will be bringing our finest
singing voices - and we’d love to
see you there! Not only will history
be potentially made but, more
importantly, we will be hoping to
raise as much money as possible
for local charities with funds being
split equally between Bolton
Wanderers in the Community,
Urban Outreach Bolton, Backup
North West, Age UK Bolton,
1point North West and The Jamal
Edwards Self Belief Trust.
Enjoy tonight’s game and, as
ever, thank you for your fantastic
support.
Wanderers staged another thrilling fightback to claim the
points that took them back into League One’s top six.
The Whites went behind to a superb early strike from Carlos
Mendes Gomes.
But Ian Evatt’s men went on to dominate after the break and
their pressure finally paid when Connor Bradley tucked away a
low cross from Kieran Sadlier with five minutes of normal time
to go.
And there was still time for the slick Whites to grab a winner
as they repeated their successful comebacks against Burton
Albion and Accrington Stanley.
This time Josh Sheehan was the provider, with Dapo Afolayan
on hand to deliver the cool finish which sent the travelling fans
wild and made it a happy 41st birthday for boss Evatt.
OPPOSITION IN PROFILE
THE BOSS…
Barrow have had half-a-dozen
managers since Ian Evatt left Holker
Street following the club’s promotion
back to the Football League after a
48-year absence.
The current man in the hot seat is ex-
Oldham Athletic and Halifax Town boss
Peter Wild following his appointment at
the end of May.
After building up his coaching
credentials in Oldham’s Academy setup,
Wild had two spells as first-team
manager at Boundary Park.
He then crossed the county border
to take over at Halifax Town in the
National League in July, 2019.
The 38-year-old led Town to three top-
10 finishes and two appearances in the
play-offs before joining Barrow after the
departure of ex-Wanderers’ defender
and assistant-manager Phil Brown and
guiding them into their current position
in League Two’s top six.
The Bluebirds reached round two of
the Papa Johns Trophy and set up their
visit to the University of Bolton Stadium
by finishing runners-up in Group G in
qualifying.
Wild’s side recorded a win, a loss and
a draw in their three group games with
a 2-0 home victory over Carlisle in
their final game securing their progress
through to the knock-out phase for the
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
