Lida MugfordBARRE TOWN – Lida Mugford, 86, along-time resident passed away on Saturday,November 19, 2022, at her homewith her family at her bedside.Born on January 19, 1936, in Barre,she was the daughter of Charles and Ethel(Fuller) Payne. She attended elementaryschool in Washington and graduated fromSpaulding High School in Barre.On October 5, 1957, she marriedWayne Mugford in the First Baptist Church in Barre. Followingtheir marriage, they made their home in Barre until theymoved to their current residence in Barre Town in 1959.Lida was a homemaker. She was an active member ofEnough Ministries formally the First Baptist Church, sheserved on many boards and committees, was a Sunday Schoolteacher, and active with the Woman’s Alliance. He graduated from West SpringfieldHigh School in 1958 and the University of Vermont in 1962.He assumed ownership of the Young Farm which was thenowned by long-time East Montpelier resident Lyle P. Youngand Kate Foster Young who was his great aunt. He was marriedto Kate Allen of East Montpelier. They later divorced. Heleaves his children, grandson and extended family and friends.Beside operating the farm, Austin was active in many agricultureorganizations as well as several town boards. A memorialservice was held on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at theOld Meeting House Church. His remains were interred at hisfamily’s lot in the Cutler Cemetery. He met his wife, Kristine, when they bothworked at Connecticut Mutual and married in August of 1991in Litchfield, CT. They then moved to Vermont to work andraise their family. His love of music spanned many genres, andhe enjoyed going to concerts, especially Tanglewood. He issurvived by his wife, children, and extended family. There willbe no calling hours. A memorial gathering will be held at alater date. Thatmeans you are likely going to be exposed to and probably getCovid at some point.“The most significant difference from previous conversationsabout Covid is that there are several incredibly effectivevaccines and treatments,” Dr. White said. “If you do getCovid and it’s a worrisome situation because you’re older orhave health care risks, there are things we can do about it.”According to the CDC, for people who have had the vaccineand boosters, the Covid mortality is about 0.1 per100,000 people every week. To put this into context, Vermontauto fatalities in the year 2020, were about 0.18 deaths per100,000 Vermonters every week.“So, if you get in a car today, you should be about twice asconcerned as you should for Covid if you’ve been boosted,”Parents have not been keepingme bored – or should I say “snowboard” – with their questionsabout safety when their childrenare on the slopes this season. Letme see if I can glide through afew safety tips with you on skiand snowboard safety.Proper Equipment is Critical•Be sure to buy or rent skis orsnowboards that are appropriatefor your child’s skiing ability -the larger or longer the ski orsnowboard, the faster it goes andthe harder it is to control.•Have skis, bindings, poles, and boots fitted by a trainedprofessional at a ski shop. Don’t just give your child hand-medownsthat they will grow into.•Snow boarders should have kneepads, wrist, and elbowpads to cushion falls.•Dress your child in layers to deal with the changes in temperature,keep them hydrated, and don’t forget to use sunprotection even on cloudy days. This includes eye protectionwith goggles to filter out the sun rays that can be quite brightas they reflect off the snow.The Importance of a Properly Fitted Helmet•More than 50% of head injuries in children can be preventedon the slopes yearly if ski helmets are worn.•What if your child will not wear one? The best way to getyour children to wear a helmet is for parents to wear one aswell. If your children think it’s not cool, have them customize• • •Ski and Snowboard SafetyDr. White said. “If you want to live in an environment whereyou’re at lower risk, you have the opportunity to get vaccinatedand get the boosters.”In the early stages of the pandemic, Dr. White didn’t knowhow much risk there was for his family and didn’t know howhe was going to be able to take care of his patients.“I contributed to putting fear into people’s hearts, becauseI was worried too. Fortunately, we don’t live there anymore,”Dr. White said.“I encourage you to go see your family or haveyour family come to see you. Do the things that you used todo for the holidays.
