Program Note:
Patiala Pulse brings to life a beautiful element from the diverse world of rhythm in South Asia: a
pulse that feels paradoxically relaxed and intense. This manifests in patterns that reference the
Carnatic idiom (e.g. kuraippu - reduction) of South India, and the dhol (e.g. 4-beat drum pattern
sometimes known as "chaal") of Punjab, the region where the city of Patiala is located. In its embrace
of elasticity within a forward-driving momentum, the piece also pays a playful homage to the structure
of Patiala pants. One of the classiest and comest salwars in South Asia, these famed trousers fan out
and spread beyond what might seem possible before becoming sleekly tted at the very end. I nd this
to be a fascinating metaphor for thinking about rhythms and more broadly, for contemplating how,
within a busy, exciting life, we can aim to stretch out and cherish every single moment of our present.
- Shruthi Rajasekar
Performance Notes:
A few melodic phrases reference the Carnatic raga Khamas, albeit not traditionally so. This includes
some of the material in m. 80-86. Performers are encouraged to nd and listen to recordings of this
melodic raga, which is characterized by its languid and, in turn, vivacious nature.
The material at Letter D is an application of the advanced Carnatic rhythmic principle of kuraippu
(reducing). Often seen in the thani avarthanam (the solo exchanges between percussion instruments),
the kuraippu in this piece occurs between the band's pitched forces and the percussion section. To
emphasize the back-and-forth nature of this exchange, performers should strive to make their
individual entrances as distinct and clear as possible. When rehearsing the unison material at Letter
E, the players should sing the material in order to incorporate the vocal inections of this musical
style into their playing; this will also help the grace notes to land on the beat.
To incorporate the 'patiala pants' approach to rhythm– that is, to create an atmosphere that is both
rhythmically relaxed and intense– players should strive to internalize the beat and music as much as
possible; players are encouraged to tap their feet or nd other ways of keeping the rhythm in their
bodies, as is done in many oral musical traditions in India. The 'patiala pants' metaphor (a stretch
before crisply ending the pant leg) also makes its appearance in specic moments such as m. 1-4.
The drum set player is encouraged to improvise as desired. All percussionists can view their parts as
leading roles in the piece.
