Classical/English showdown

The Lynn Classical football team began
its season 5-1, but have since dropped three
straight. On Turkey Day, the Rams hope
they can enjoy their Thanksgiving meals
with another win under their belt.
Against Lexington on opening night,
the Rams sent the fans at Manning Field
home happy, winning 36-0. John Nasky
led his team with 29 receiving yards, while
Matthew Carrillo led in the rushing category

with an impressive 157 yards.
Then came the Peabody Tanners, a team
that now stands at 9-1. That said, Classical’s
35-8 loss at the hands of the Tanners didn’t
alarm many, and began a small revenge tour
for the 1-1 Rams.
When a team racks up 50 points, chances
are it’s an explosive offense throughout
the year. Carrillo rushed for 148 yards and
three touchdowns against Somerville the
following week with freshman running back
Tyler Hoeun racking up 81 yards and two
touchdowns. Somerville had no answer for
the Rams and Classical ran away with the
50-0 win.
Coming off a stellar performance
against Somerville, Medford was Hoeun’s
breakout performance that caught the eyes
of everyone at Manning Field. He rushed for
278 yards and four touchdowns, averaging
nearly 13 yards per carry in Classical’s 30-6
win over the not-so-fast Mustangs.
The momentum didn’t stop there,
however. The Rams picked up two more
consecutive wins against Malden (22-6) and
Revere (20-14) – both on the road. Against
Malden, Hoeun continued to shine with
183 rushing yards while senior Nick Costa
rushed for 57 yards. And
against Revere, Classical
faced a third quarter deficit
but clawed its way back to
pull off a game-winning
drive where Nasky
hauled in a pass on
a slant route in the
endzone – silencing
the crowd in Revere.
Since the heroics,
Classical has dropped
three straight, but
they stood strong against
powerhouse Everett for the
majority of the battle. The
Rams were eliminated from
the postseason at the hands
of Andover, and dropped a
matchup with St. John’s the
next week.

Now, it’s Classical
vs. English, aka
Lynn rivals. After
starting their season
0-4, the Bulldogs
won four in a
row and five of
their last six.
The last two
Thanksgiving
games between
the rivals have
been decided by
one possession,
including last
year’s Classical
victory by a score
of 17-14 in double
overtime. English
won the year before,
14-6, so the Bulldogs
are hoping the pattern can
continue this Thanksgiving. All that said, it’s
safe to say both fanbases are ready for the
best tradition in Lynn.
