When I came to serve as principal 

at Wheaton Academy in 2006, 

a friend of mine asked how 

I felt about leaving the school where I 

was serving to “join the Yankees.” From 

a distance, this friend of mine perceived 

Wheaton Academy as a school with a 

successful yet storied history similar to 

that of the New York Yankees. While 

Wheaton Academy has been richly 

blessed over the years, many in our 

community may not be aware of the hard 

times in the early and mid-1970s that 

almost resulted in the permanent closing 

of our school. 

As we celebrate the Academy’s birthday 

each year on December 14, remembering 

God’s faithfulness to us over the years is so 

important. Few Christian schools in the 

United States have been around for as long 

as Wheaton Academy—it will be 169 years 

in December—and few have remained 

true to their original mission as we have. 

As you read this issue of Connection, I trust 

that you will enjoy reflections from our 

alumni that highlight God’s work in their 

lives through some of the most challenging 

times we have faced as a school. 

Understanding Wheaton Academy’s 

history and God’s faithfulness through 

hardship and uncertainty is an excellent 

reminder that our successes today are a 

gift for which none of us can boast. At this 

time of year when we celebrate the birth 

of Christ and our salvation in Him, we are 

reminded of His grace for which none of 

us can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it 

is by grace you have been saved, through 

faith—and this is not from yourselves, 

it is the gift of God— not by works so 

that no one can boast.” As we approach 

this Christmas season, we celebrate this 

common bond of God’s gift of grace 

through Christ Jesus. 

I may have come to join “the Yankees” 

of Christian education, but I am keenly 

aware that this is God’s team for which 

I play. I look back with admiration and 

great awe of those in Wheaton Academy’s 

history who trusted God to carry them 

through the most challenging times. Their 

faith and courage were remarkable; I am 

thankful for them, and I am thankful to 

each of you—for your continued support, 

encouragement, and prayer for us as we 

seek to nurture growth in students through 

relationships, excellence, and service to the 

glory of God!

Boys Golf Wraps Up 2022 

Season at State Finals 

Congratulations to the 


Boys Golf team on an 

outstanding season. 

Undefeated in conference play, the 

team went on to earn first place in the 

regional competition before advancing 

to the IHSA 2A Sectionals Tournament. 

The season concluded as 4 members 

of the team represented WA at the 

IHSA 2A State Finals, held October 

7-8 at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, 

Illinois. Sam Dykema ’23, Wyatt 

Brown ’23, Freddie Chan ’24, and Joe 

Luchtenburg ’24 each qualified for the 

state’s individual competition. At the 

culmination of the 2-day event, Sam 

Dykema posted a point total of 148, 

earning him a spot on the All-State team.

Senior Declan Finnegan proved to be 

an integral member of the Wheaton 

Academy Boys Varsity Soccer team. 

Finnegan finished his WA soccer career 

as 3rd all-time in shutouts and helped 

lead the team to a fourth-place finish 

in the Class 1A IHSA State Soccer 

Tournament. 

Finnegan made his mark on the 

football field this season as well. As 

the Academy’s special teams field goal 

kicker, Finnegan averaged six points a 

game and was named to the MSC All- 

Conference team.

Visit Wheaton Academy

As president of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, 

John helps parents equip their children to think biblically 

about current cultural issues. He is a respected voice in 

the Christian community who will provide insight and 

encouragement to parents and grandparents of K-12 

children as we navigate cultural hot topics such as identity, 

substance abuse, LGBTQ issues, and more. This will be an

Pausing to remember the faithfulness of God

As Christians around the world 

prepare to celebrate the birth of our 

Savior, we wanted to pause amid 

the holiday activities and reflect on God’s 

faithfulness both to Wheaton Academy and 

in the individual lives of Academy alumni. 

Why is it so important to stop and remember God’s 

faithfulness? One reason is that we tend to be quick to forget 

His goodness. Our forgetfulness can happen at any time, but it is 

especially easy to get caught up in the frenzy of the holidays and 

fail to acknowledge gratitude for God’s constancy. 

The word remember appears more than 200 times in the Bible. 

God commands us to remember His mighty deeds and to praise 

His name. 

Here are some reflections from the classes of 1972 and 1967 

who celebrated their 50-year and 55-year reunions at 

Homecoming 2022. They were asked to share their thoughts 

and observations on God’s faithfulness in their lives and His 

faithfulness to the Academy. 

“Give praise to the Lord, 

proclaiming His name; 

make known among 

the nations what He 

has done. Sing to Him, 

sing praise to Him; tell 

of all His wonderful 

acts. Glory in His holy 

name; let the hearts 

of those who seek 

the Lord rejoice. Look 

to the Lord and His 

strength; seek His 

face always. Remember 

the wonders He has 

done, His miracles, 

and the judgments He 

pronounced.”

Having been a member of 

what I believe was one of the 

smallest graduating classes in 

the Academy’s history, it was 

not hard for me to imagine 

that the school would not 

last much longer. It is wonderful now to see 

how wrong I was! God’s faithfulness has been 

demonstrated through the prayers and sacrifices 

of generations of WA staff, faculty, and families. 

This has been a lesson slowly learned in my life 

as well, but with the retrospect of 60+ years, I am 

becoming ever more aware of His perfect timing 

and magnificent plan.

I will never forget that 

moment as a freshman sitting 

in the chapel left of the pulpit, 

third row, fifth seat from the 

center aisle. Years earlier, I had 

made a commitment to follow 

Jesus, but deep inside I knew 

it was shallow. The speaker (if only I could recall 

his name) explained salvation in such a way that 

it all clicked more deeply and profoundly than 

ever before and with my head bowed, I raised 

my hand. My life changed that day. To Wheaton 

Academy I remain in debt for providing an 

education focused on Jesus Christ, anchored in 

Biblical truth.

Robert Fetterhoff ’72 

It’s impossible to describe the incredible 

faithfulness of God without thinking of 

Lamentations 3:22-23—“Because of the 

Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for 

his compassions never fail. They are new 

every morning; great is your faithfulness.” I 

think it’s interesting that God’s faithfulness 

is linked in these verses to His compassion. That’s where I’ve 

experienced His faithfulness the most. When I’ve deserved it 

the least, our Faithful God has demonstrated His compassion 

in responding to my own rebellion and sin. “He does not treat 

us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities” 

(Psalm 103:10). Perhaps most of all, I love these words: “If 

we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown 

himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). 

As I reflect on what God has done at Wheaton Academy in 

the last 50 years, I’m just amazed! When I was a student, the 

school lacked adequate facilities, struggled for enrollment, and 

barely survived. In fact, each year there were rumors it might 

even close. But it did not close! God brought “life from the 

ashes,” and WA is thriving today. Only God in His faithfulness 

could do that! He deserves the praise. 

Holly (Maynard ’72) Jenkins 

The class of ’72 experienced dark years at 

Wheaton Academy, but God was faithful. 

We experienced a loss in enrollment, 

change in school name, sports teams losing 

more than winning, and six headmasters in 

four years. But God saw us through with 

a faithful board, loving faculty, parental 

support, incredible friendships, and costs being covered by 

anonymous donors! My four years at WA were God-given, 

showed me God’s love, and prepared me for the next 50 years 

of my life! “Great is Thy Faithfulness!” 

Sharon (Uzelac ’67) Abbate 

As I reflect upon God’s faithfulness in 

my life, I’m in awe of His presence and 

provision. A serious car accident in my 20s, 

divorce and cancer diagnosis in my 40s, 

and health challenges that have followed 

are a few examples of where my physical, 

emotional, and spiritual needs were met in 

ways that only He could have orchestrated. 

I love Isaiah 61:3 “...to bestow on them a crown of beauty 

instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and 

a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”

I owe so much to the faithfulness of 

Wheaton Academy faculty shaping my 

understanding of the faith during the 

cultural tumult of the 60s. The example of 

young teachers sold out for the Kingdom 

of God—Tom Fulghum, Don Heykoop, 

Mark Hanchett, Tom Jarman, Dave 

Klopfenstein, Jack Gill, and so many more— have been like 

pillars of fire for over 55 years, guiding through the inevitable 

challenges and complexities of life. 

Wheaton Academy is one of the few schools, or institutions of 

any kind, whose goals and objectives have not changed since 

1853 as documented in the Wheaton Academy history book, 

Celebrating God’s Unfolding Story. There is a “cloud of witnesses” 

dating back over 160 years whose character and life’s work 

testify to God’s faithfulness to all generations. 

We must not forget what God has done in our 

lives and in the long history of the Academy.

Rich Aram ’72 

While at the Academy, I never would have 

expected my career or most of the other 

events that have happened in my life. 

My job provided some interesting travel 

opportunities, including teaching people 

from many different countries. My family 

shared in most of that and built many 

international friendships. The Lord walked with us through the 

good times and the tough times as well, such as Sarah dying from 

leukemia after 34 good years of marriage. 

Wheaton Academy survived the “Dark Ages” because God 

wanted to use this ministry and because quiet heroes of the faith 

served through difficult years. Our teachers served the Lord 

beautifully through years of bad pay, bad facilities, changing 

administrations, plus the usual challenges of dealing with young 

adults. Some board members trusted the Lord and made big 

sacrifices and kept the school running to give us a great education. 

David Stockman ’72 

God has been wonderful to my family and 

me. During the 2021 winter freeze in Texas, 

we experienced a miracle. Our pipes burst, 

and the situation seemed hopeless as I was 

the 800th person on the list of the only 

plumber who answered the phone. Stores 

for 80 miles around were sold out of the 

pipes we needed. God was good. Our neighbors just happened to 

have the right pipes, giving them to us after we prayed. 

I remember during my time at Wheaton Academy that I was 

told that the school would be closing that next year. However, 

several of the board members had just so much love for the 

school that they kept the school going. The Bible says Christians 

shall be known by their love. When I returned to campus for 

my 50-year reunion, I saw how God has blessed this school in so 

many ways. Praise the Lord for His provision for new buildings 

and a thriving student body. 

One of the common themes of alumni 

stories is the lasting impact of faculty and 

staff on the lives of Academy students. 

The impact was so profound that memories 

of their Academy days remain vivid for 

decades. Many of these alumni were 

boarding students, as Wheaton College 

Academy (WCA) offered room and board 

through the early 1970s. One boarder 

was Alma (Gordon ’55) Dole. Her story 

is representative of other alumni. Alma 

attended the Academy for her junior and 

senior year while her parents served as 

medical missionaries in the interior of Brazil.

Being a missionary kid (M.K.) 

is a blessing and a challenge. I 

experienced the blessings as a 

child growing up in Brazil, but I 

faced the challenge of remaining 

in the States while my parents 

returned to Brazil. What did WCA 

do with a homesick gal whose heart and ways were 

totally foreign? They blessed me. Even today, as an 

octogenarian, I praise our wondrous Lord for Miss 

Chapman, the front desk registrar, who took me under 

her wing, befriended me, and helped me through the 

dark, lonely hours; for Mr. Benjamin for his kindness 

in choir and for Mrs. Benjamin who lovingly adopted 

me, even surprising me with new clothes to supplement 

my limited wardrobe; for Mr. “J” (Mel Johnson) whose 

lively biology classes and labs enthralled me; for Mr. 

and Mrs. Kullberg who, in God’s perfect timing, would 

give me a word of encouragement or an invitation for a 

meal and prayer. How faithful is our Lord! After 42 years 

serving Him as missionaries to Brazil, my husband and 

I retired. Our new mission field is Heath Village, a 

retirement community in New Jersey. 

He has seen us through difficult days. He has provided for our needs. He has been faithful. Christmas is a reminder 

that the God of Israel kept His Old Testament covenants and will keep His promise of a new covenant in Jesus 

Christ. We can put our trust in Him as we anticipate the future when Jesus returns, not as a babe in 

a manger but as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Merry Christmas, Wheaton Academy community!

Testimonies Reveal 

the Character of God 

Who doesn’t love a good story? It conveys 

meaning, entertains, and even inspires. It is to 

be shared and enjoyed. But when a story gives 

glory to the Lord and tells of God’s faithfulness, it becomes 

so much more than just a story; it becomes a testimony. 

And testimonies have power. They touch the heart, stir 

the spirit, and change lives. 

Preaching to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 4:9, Moses delivers a stern warning to 

God’s people: “Be very careful never to forget what you have seen God doing for you. 

May his miracles have a deep and permanent effect on your lives. Tell your children 

and your grandchildren about the glorious miracles he has done.” In essence, Moses is 

saying your testimony is not just for you. 

Testimonies are God’s revelation of Himself to us. The remembrances shared by 

alumni from the classes of 1967 and 1972 remind us of the countless ways our 

Academy experiences have been woven into each of our personal testimonies. And 

when knowledge of the divine and unchanging character of God’s faithfulness is 

revealed to the next generation through our testimonies, their faith is nourished and 

strengthened. 

On the pages that follow, we recognize those who have faithfully supported us in 

our commitment to help each student develop a personal, vibrant, and growing 

relationship with Jesus Christ. In the years to come when our students reflect on 

their time at Wheaton Academy, we pray they are able to confidently proclaim 

His greatness, power, and faithfulness as evident in their own lives. Thank you for 

your role in making the testimony and impact of Wheaton Academy a reality. Your

Wheaton Academy’s 2022 Todd Beamer Benefit Golf 

Outing returned once again to the beautiful and challenging 

Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Illinois. This event, 

held each September, serves to remember the life of former 

WA student, Todd Beamer ’87, and his heroic actions on 

9/11 as well as raise funds used to provide need-based student 

scholarships. Be sure to save the date for next year’s event on 

Monday, September 11, 2023. This event is open to the entire 

WA community.

Tax Credit Opportunity 

for Illinois Residents 

In August of 2017, the Illinois Legislature 

passed Senate Bill 1947, allowing individuals to 

direct their state tax liability to a scholarship 

granting organization (SGO). The SGO then 

directs those dollars to a qualifying private 

school of the taxpayer’s choice. In turn, 

the taxpayer receives a 75% tax credit. As a 

qualifying private school, Wheaton Academy 

has been the recipient of nearly $5M in 

redirected funds. Those funds, earmarked 

by law to be used for eligible students, have 

provided scholarship dollars for many of our 

students who would otherwise be unable to 

attend Wheaton Academy. As an IL taxpayer, 

you are not only providing financially for 

students, but you are also benefiting from 

your participation by receiving a 75% tax credit 

on your 2022 taxes.

program at work. The state of Illinois is eligible 

to issue up to $75M in tax credits in 2022.

The launch of the reimagined Alumni Board is happening 

this year. One of the tasks of the newly configured board 

is the recruitment of class ambassadors. These class 

ambassadors are alumni who agree to serve their class and 

alma mater to promote the mission of the WA Alumni 

Association and the school. Class ambassadors will be the 

conduit from their classmates to the Academy via the Alumni 

Office and the Alumni Board. We are looking for alumni 

who are willing to maintain communication with their 

classmates and to share class updates (address changes, prayer 

requests, career updates, deaths, etc.) with the Director of 

Alumni Relations, Dawn Earl.

ALUMNOTES 

1949 | 1951 

On September 6, 1952, Gene LeMaire ’49 

and Carolyn Stevenson ’51 were the first 

couple wed in the Academy’s Alumni 

Chapel. These beloved Academy 

teachers recently celebrated their 

70th anniversary surrounded by their 

five children—Holly, Sandy ’75, David 

’78, Aimee ’81, and Marc ’84—and 

their spouses, along with numerous 

grandkids and great-grandchildren. 

Gene’s and Carolyn’s lives are 

intertwined with the extended 

Academy community, and they have 

been blessed to serve in jobs they 

loved. 

1972 | 2005 

When Gary Knosp ’72 and his wife 

Carol visited Williamsburg, Virginia, 

this summer to celebrate their 40th 

wedding anniversary, they selected 

a bed and breakfast named The 

Cedars. Much to their surprise, they 

discovered they shared an Academy 

connection with the owners of the 

inn, Academy sweethearts Alex ’05 

and Laura (Kelley ’05) Vlk. Alex and Laura 

were married in 2009 and moved 

to Williamsburg in 2012. Alex’s love 

of history started on the colonial 

streets of this historic town. The Vlks 

acquired The Cedars in 2016, fulfilling 

a lifelong dream of Laura’s to run 

a bed and breakfast. The couple 

seems to have found their niche as 

innkeepers. You can read more about

1977 

After 35 years in management in 

the business world, Ed Wolbert ’77’s 

retirement turned into ministry work 

for Samaritan’s Purse. There are 

now four Wheaton Academy alumni 

working at the Samaritan’s Purse 

center in Aurora, Illinois. Pictured

Maroney, seasonal human resources

1981 | 1984 

They fought like cats and dogs when 

they were young, but today these 

two sisters are business partners, 

neighbors, and friends. Their sewing 

machines face each other, and they 

talk all day long as they labor in love 

creating one-of-a-kind winter gear. 

Wendy (Gieser ’81) Partain and Susie 

(Gieser ’84) Cassel are the masterminds 

behind LucyBlue Knits, which they 

started in 2007. LucyBlue Knits 

are environmentally conscious, 

uniquely repurposed, and focused 

on creativity. Their pieces reflect their 

commitment, as their mittens and 

scarves are beautiful and functional.

1988 

Jori (Senter ’88) Susanka and her 

husband Dan renewed their marriage 

vows recently in a private ceremony 

in Hawaii. Their 16-year-old daughter 

Emmy was the maid of honor and 

read Ephesians 3:20, the family verse. 

Eight-year-old son JunJun was the 

best man and did double duty as the 

ring bearer. This ceremony celebrated 

the couple’s 20th anniversary, delayed 

due to the pandemic. “Great is Thy 

Faithfulness,” the hymn sung at their 

wedding, remains a true testament to 

the Lord’s hand on their life together.

1998 

Bethany Rooks ’98, one of the finest 

two-sport athletes in College of 

DuPage history, was inducted into 

the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 

June 2022. Bethany played a starring 

role on three national championship 

teams and helped win four Region 

4 titles and compete at the national 

tournaments. She won consecutive 

All-American volleyball honors 

after leading the Chaparrals to the 

1998 and 1999 NJCAA III national 

championships. She was the national 

tourney MVP her freshman season 

and led the nation in kills/sets as a 

sophomore. Her 1999 basketball team 

won the Region 4 title and finished 

fourth at nationals. The following year, 

she was a featured player on the 2000 

national championship team and 

earned second-team All-American 

honors. Bethany is the daughter of 

Edie (Tameling ’64) and Foster Rooks.

2003 

As a missionary kid growing up in 

Argentina and Ecuador, Ashleigh 

Dellos ’03 was exposed to the world 

at a young age. When her family 

returned from the mission field in 

2000, Ashleigh attended Wheaton 

Academy for her last three years 

of high school. WA blessed her 

with a rich community and a firm 

foundation with the Lord. Now, 

she has the privilege of working 

for a study abroad program, Living 

and Learning International (L & L). 

Growing up overseas gave her a 

heart for the world and a passion for 

seeing students engage with other 

cultures. At L & L, the mission is to see 

students live in community, engage 

the challenges of the world, and 

learn how to respond with a biblical 

Christian worldview. This goal is 

accomplished through discipleship, 

academics, and adventures. 

Partnering with Christian colleges 

all over the country, Ashleigh’s role 

is to place students at one of the 

organization’s locations. Her reward 

is to see students’ lives changed 

after they spend time abroad in this

2008 

This smiley guy is Thomas Scott 

Rougas III, the son of Scott Rougas 

’08 and his wife, Christine. Scott is 

the assistant controller for Transdev 

North America in Lombard, Illinois. 

In that role, he is involved in financial 

planning and analysis. Christine works 

part-time for North DuPage Special 

Education Cooperative and nannies 

part-time, so she can be home most 

days with Tommy. Scott and Christine 

love their new life as Tommy’s parents 

and are excited about their family’s 

future as they follow the Lord’s will. 

2014 

ALUMNOTES 

After three years and a global 

pandemic, Alyssa (Pell ’14) Budzisz 

earned a doctorate of nurse practice 

focused on family medicine with 

a subspecialty in palliative care 

from the University of Alabama 

at Birmingham in August. While 

working on this degree, Alyssa 

worked as a pediatric bone marrow 

and oncology nurse at Duke 

University Hospital in North Carolina. 

Her goal is to become a palliative 

care nurse practitioner and to use 

her training to help patients with 

chronic health conditions manage 

pain and improve their quality of life. 

She would love to serve veterans. Her 

long-term plan is to gain more clinical 

experience and become a professor. 

She is trusting the Lord to open doors 

where He wants her. Alyssa and her 

husband, Jerry ’12, reside in Raleigh, 

North Carolina.

2014 

Matthew Hamm ’14 and Emma Camillone 

were married on July 29, 2022, at 

Providence Vineyard in Hebron, IL. 

Accompanying Matthew as some of 

his groomsmen were Charlie Hamm 

’12, Drew English ’14, Ethan Klepitsch 

’14, Theo Selvaggio ’14, and James 

Drury ’14. Matthew’s sister, Olivia ’20, 

was one of Emma’s bridesmaids. The 

couple currently lives in Wheaton, 

where Matthew works as a sales 

representative for Tegus, a financial 

technology company. Emma is a 6thgrade 

teacher at Timothy Christian 

Schools in Elmhurst, Illinois, teaching 

math, science, and Bible. 

2016 

Ty Seager ’16 and Ingrid Prichard ’16 met 

in 6th grade at Wheaton Christian 

Grammar School, and as they went 

on to Wheaton Academy, their 

friendship continued. They both 

participated in sports, Project LEAD, 

traveled on the same Winterim 

trips, and shared the same friend 

group. Ty attended Northwestern 

(IL) to study communications and 

marketing. Ingrid headed to Biola 

University (CA) to study public 

relations and Bible. They stayed in 

touch and began dating the summer 

before their senior year. They were 

married at Providence Vineyard in 

Hebron, IL, on June 12, 2022. Ty and 

Ingrid recently moved to Oceanside, 

CA. Ty is a marketing manager at a 

tech company, and Ingrid works in 

marketing for Wheaton Christian 

Grammar School! The newlyweds 

are grateful for their time at WA, the 

lifelong friendships it provided them, 

and how their faith flourished and 

biblical knowledge grew. 

2017 

Jacob Kainer ’17 graduated from 

Olivet Nazarene University in May 

with a degree in biology. This past 

summer, he completed U.S. Army 

Cadet Command Advanced Camp 

at Fort Knox (KY). In August, he was 

officially commissioned as a Second 

Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He will 

continue his military career in the 

Illinois National Guard, reporting for 

specialized training at the U.S. Army 

Quartermaster School at Fort Lee in 

Virginia. Jacob is pictured here with 

his parents, Lisa, an Academy teacher, 

and Eric. 

High school sweethearts Cooper 

Williams ’17 and Maddy Burdett ’17 

exchanged vows on June 11, 2022, 

in a beautiful ceremony in Lake 

Geneva, Wisconsin. The wedding 

party was filled with family of the 

bride and groom and Academy 

friends. Attendants and groomsmen 

included: Jonathan ’10 and Kirsten (Bell 

’10) Burdett, Abby (Burdett ’12) Henry, 

Will Burdett ’14, Jillian Grant ’08, Hadley 

Williams ’20, Finley Williams ’26, Olivia 

Hamm ’20, Samantha Wolf ’17, Lindsey 

(Anderson ’17) Feyerer, Bond Bailey ’17, 

Kyle Bertsche ’17, Nate Farrell ’22, and 

Hudson Williams ’23. The new Mr. and 

Mrs. Williams reside in Winfield, 

Illinois. Maddy is a 2nd-grade teacher 

at Wheaton Christian Grammar 

School, and Cooper is a talent 

acquisition specialist at Logitalent in 

Bloomingdale, IL.

IN MEMORIAM 

1985 

Joseph Sennese ’85 passed away on 

November 7, 2022, surrounded 

by his loving family. Joe grew 

up working at his father’s paint 

company, Fancy Colours & Co. In 

2006, he brought his talents, work 

ethic, and industry knowledge 

to PPG Industries. Joe remained 

a part of the team during the 

transition from PPG to Vitro 

Architectural Glass. During his 

time at Vitro, Joe was able to 

teach, learn, and grow, and he 

formed many relationships 

along the way. Joe is survived 

by his loving wife, Shameem; his 

daughters, Grace and Hannah ’16; 

one grandson; and his brothers, 

James (Tonya) Sennese ’89 and Jason 

(Julianne) Sennese.
