These are just three of the key reasons why Total Ability works hard to help more people with disability get behind the wheel and they’ve been doing it for more than 10 years now! Regaining your independence through driving has a hugely positive impact on a person’s outlook on life. It opens so many opportunities enabling employment, connecting with family and friends independently as well as being part of the community through various activities and hobbies. For people with complex disabilities the opportunity to drive has been either physically impossible or financially prohibitive. With the advancements in technology and programs to help with funding, this dream no longer must remain a dream. In Australia, with no previous experience before embarking on her life-long dream of driving, Ame Barnbrook—born with no arms, one leg and three toes— is well on her way to passing her NSW licence. Having rep<strong>res</strong>ented Australia in competitive sailing and learnt to play the trumpet amongst other activities, Ame is no stranger to gaining independence in many aspects of life. After hearing about the latest innovations in driving controls, she set her sights on passing her test as soon as possible. Ame now has the finish line firmly in view with the help of driving instructor Dean McMillan and Total Ability’s High-Level Assessment Van equipped with cutting-edge technology from Fadiel Italiana. In New Zealand, Total Ability and Braiden International have partnered to produce the same fully fitted High-Level Assessment Van to give people with disability the opportunity to explore the potential to drive from wheelchair and to trial a variety of options. The High- Level Assessment Van will be available from mid-February 2023. We encourage all Driver Trained Occupational Therapists (DTOTs) in NZ to get in touch with Total Ability at info@totalability.com.au for updates on the rollout of the van and to make assessment bookings.
