victims after capturing former security guards who
German business confidence dips in
September
A closely watched survey shows that German business
confidence sank again in September but only modestly.
The Ifo institute said Monday its monthly confidence index
was down to 107.5 points from 108.7 in August. That
followed a larger fall the previous month another sign that
momentum in Europe’s biggest economy is slowing.
The German economy barely grew in the second quarter.
Mounting fears about the eurozone’s debt crisis and another
recession in the U.S. also have been weighing on companies’
outlooks.
Many economists had expected a larger drop in the Ifo index
this month.
Boeing to deliver first 787
More than two million people have been affected by floods in India as
torrential rains lash Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states.
Heavy monsoon rains have been battering parts of India for the past
More than 80 people have died in
In Orissa, the worst affected state, vast parts of 10 districts have been
inundated by flood waters, officials say.
Afghan employee kills U.S. citizen at
Kabul CIA base
An Afghan employee of the U.S. government opened fire inside a
CIA office in Kabul on Sunday evening, killing an American and
injuring a second, U.S. and Afghan officials said, in the second
major breach of embassy security in two weeks.
The attacker was killed, and the injured U.S. citizen was taken
to a military hospital with non-life threatening injuries, U.S.
embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said on Monday.
It was not clear if the U.S. citizens were victims of a rogue employee
who had been won over to the insurgent cause, or just the
escalation of an argument in a city were tensions are high and
many people carry guns. There are precedents for both.
Vietnamese sailors are home after ransom
paid to pirates
Twenty-four Vietnamese sailors are safe at home after an
eight-month ordeal as prisoners of Somali pirates.
Officials and analysts said the cargo ship MV Hoang Son Sun
and its crew were released last week after a Vietnamese
state-owned shipping company paid the pirates a ransom of
more than $2 million.
The sailors were flown
home to Hanoi and
arrived on Friday.
Various shipping
sources said the ship’s
owners paid a ransom in
the millions of dollars to
secure the release of the
Mongolian-flagged ship, which was seized by pirates in January.
The French news agency Monday quoted the company’s deputy
general director saying the ransom was $2.6 million. The ship is
believed to be headed for a port in Oman.
Somali-based pirates have seized dozens of ships in the Indian
Ocean, demanding ransoms reported to range as high as $5
million. Ship owners are generally reluctant to discuss details of
the ransoms for fear of encouraging more hijackings.
Haas wins
high-stakes
wound up half-submerged in
the water.
Haas figured his ball was fine
Sebastian Vettel insisted he
scored his ninth victory of
the season at the Marina
needs just one more point to
become the youngest
back-to back and double
world champion.
Vettel leads McLaren’s
Jenson Button by 124 points
after the Briton finished a
commendable second, just 1.7
seconds adrift at the flag, but
with the 24 year old German
insisting he was “in control”.
points available from the final
five races, starting in Japan in
a fortnight when, in all
likelihood, he and Red Bull
will finally be able to crack
Vettel said: “I wasn’t thinking
about the title in the race.
“I had made it quite clear
beforehand that it wasn’t
important to know where
other people were.
“Obviously I was given the
so crossing the line I didn’t
know whether I had done
Coffee cuts depression risk in women
Those who drank 3 cups of coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop the mental illness
Drinking coffee may lower women’s risk of depression, a new study says.Women in the study who
drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop depression
over a 10-year period compared to those who drank one cup of coffee or less per week.
The researchers cautioned, however, that the new study only shows an association between coffee
consumption and depression risk, and cannot prove that drinking coffee reduces risk of depression in
women.
The study, which included more than 50,000 women in the United
States, is the largest of its kind, the researchers, from the Harvard
School of Public Health in Boston, said.
The findings are in line with earlier studies that have found a link
between moderate coffee consumption and a reduced risk of suicide.
The new study is just the latest to suggest coffee consumption
has health benefits. Earlier work has found an association between
drinking coffee and a reduced risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer
and stroke.
“Taken together, these results reassure coffee drinkers that there seem to exist no glaringly
deleterious health consequences to coffee consumption,” Dr. Seth Berkowitz, wrote in an editor’s note
accompanying the new study.
Because the study only shows a correlation between coffee and the risk of depression, it’s too soon for
doctors to recommend coffee consumption to patients, Berkowitz said.
Early Monroe photos, copyrights to sell at
Copyrights and images from Marilyn Monroe’s first photo shoot
A bankruptcy judge in Florida ruled earlier
Actor Sean Penn worked to get Americans
from Iran
U.S. actor Sean Penn engaged in attempts to secure the release of
two Americans freed by Iran this week, flying to Venezuela to ask
President Hugo Chavez to intervene with Iran’s leader, a source
close to the release process said on Friday.
Since Tehran freed Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer on Wednesday
details have emerged about the efforts to win their freedom,
which involved the United Nations, Iraq and Oman as well as
Chavez, who is a fiery critic of the United States.
Venezuela’s deputy foreign minister told Reuters on Thursday
that Chavez brought up the case with his Iranian ally Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad after being alerted to the Americans’ plight by
friends in U.S. “intellectual circles.”
“The American ‘intellectual’ who took up the case with him was
Sean Penn,” the source told Reuters.
“Penn was very committed to the case ... He flew to Caracas
several months ago to raise it with Chavez and he kept on it,” the
source said.
Penn’s spokeswoman in the United States confirmed this account,
but would give no further details.
The two Americans had been in Iranian custody since their arrest
in July 2009 on the border with Iraq, where they said they
were hiking. They were jailed for espionage.Penn, known for his
political and social activism, won best actor Oscars for his roles in
Scientists discover an organizing
principle for our sense of smell
based on pleasantness
The fact
that certain
smells cause
us pleasure
or disgust
would seem
to be a matter
of personal
taste. But new
research at the
Institute shows that odors can be rated on a
scale of pleasantness, and this turns out to be an
organizing principle for the way we experience
smell. The findings, which appeared September
26 in Nature Neuroscience,reveal a correlation
between the response of certain nerves to
particular scents and the pleasantness of those
scents. Based on this correlation, the researchers
could tell by measuring the nerve responses
whether a subject found a smell pleasant or
unpleasant.
X-ray reveals hidden Goya painting
A previously unknown painting by Francisco de Goya has been found hidden underneath
one of his masterpieces, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has announced.
The unfinished work was discovered underneath Goya’s Portrait Of Don Ramon Satue,
using a new X-ray technique.
It is thought to depict a French general, and may even portray Napoleon Bonaparte’s
brother, Joseph.
The Rijksmuseum says the Spanish master may have covered up the portrait for political
reasons.
Joseph Bonaparte was briefly King Of Spain, from 1808-1813.
When the Napoleonic army was driven out and Ferdinand VII restored to the throne,
Goya, who retained the painting, would have wanted to distance himself from the French
regime.
The artist had served the French king and feared reprisals, despite receiving an official
pardon and being reinstated as first court painter.Eventually, unhappy with Ferdinand
VII’s autocratic regime, he applied for permission to settle in France, where he lived until his death in 1828.
Colour map
The new painting was revealed using a technique developed by the University of Antwerp and the Delft University of Technology.
The high-resolution x-ray scan allows you to see intricate brushwork and detail Bombarding a piece of art with powerful x-rays, causes
atoms in the picture’s layers of paint to emit “fluorescent” x-rays of
their own, which indicate the chemicals they originated from. That
enables a colour map of the hidden picture to be produced.
The technique was successfully tried out on a Van Gogh painting two
years ago, revealing a portrait of a peasant woman behind the work
Patch of Grass, from 1887.
Since then, a mobile version of the x-ray “scanner” has been developed,
allowing museums to examine paintings that are too delicate to be
moved or touched.
According to the Rijksmuseum, the Goya painting is a “formal portrait
of a man wearing uniform”.
The detail on his face was never completed, but “the decorations
embellishing the uniform are those of the highest ranks of a chivalric
order instituted by Joseph Bonaparte when his brother, the emperor
Napoleon, created him King Of Spain”.
“Only 15 generals, plus Joseph, were entitled to wear the uniform and
medal, although so far it has proved impossible to pin down exactly
which of them is depicted.”
Goya’s portrait of Spanish judge Ramon Satue, which was concealing the Napoleonic painting, is on display at Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen in Rotterdam, until the opening of the Rijkmuseum’s main building in 2013.
The Menil Collection Announces Return of
Byzantine Frescoes to Cyprus in 2012
After more than two decades in Houston, the beloved Byzantine
frescoes will go back to Cyprus in 2012. While this moment is
bittersweet, the story of these frescoes from their rescue, to their
long-term loan to the Menil, and now to their return very much
reflects the essence of the Menil Collection, its focus on the aesthetic
and the spiritual, and our responsible
stewardship of works from
other nations and cultures.
In 1983, Dominique de
Menil, founder of the Menil
Collection, was presented
with an extraordinary
prospect: to acquire two
13th century frescoes from
Cyprus. Mrs. de Menil was
struck by their beauty and
understood immediately their art historical significance.
However, after further research Mrs. de Menil learned that the
frescoes had been stolen from their original home in a small votive
chapel in Lysi, Cyprus.
That knowledge led to an act of extraordinary generosity in fact,
a series of generous actions that eventually engaged many other
people. First, the frescoes were acquired by the Menil Collection
on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus. Then, the
Menil Foundation supervised the restoration of the frescoes,
which had been cut into more than 30 pieces when they were
stolen. In gratitude, the Church lent the frescoes to the Menil on a
long-term basis, for presentation in a consecrated chapel in
Houston. The Byzantine Fresco Chapel opened to the public in
1997, with support for its construction provided by donors in
Houston and across the country.
Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have seen the
frescoes and experienced the majesty of Cypriot Byzantine art
and religion. Moreover, the frescoes’ installation in the Byzantine
Fresco Chapel a consecrated space that simultaneously honors
their sacred origins and the tragic history of their looting from
their true home church in Lysi includes a profound, sacred
dimension and is therefore different from traditional museum
presentations of antiquities.
While the loan of the frescoes formally concludes in February
2012, this will not be the end of their story or the story of the
building. The Menil is exploring how best to use it in the future,
in ways that carry forward the museum’s mission
Energy Min to
propose extension
of LPG, NGV price
pegging policy
The Ministry of Energy is
planning to ask the National
Energy Policy Committee
(NEPC) to continue pinning
the prices of liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG) and
natural gas for vehicle (NGV)
until year end.
Energy Minister Pichai
Naripthaphan disclosed that
during next week’s meeting
by Prime Minister Yingluck
Shinawatra, consideration
would be given to the
continuation of the price
freezing measure for LPG
and NGV, which was due to
expire this month.
The Minister voiced support
for an initial extension of
the policy until the end of
this year after the result of
the Government’s policy
to increase people’s income
became more evident.
Nonetheless, he said the
final decision rested with the
Prime Minister.
According to Mr Pichai, the
committee will also concurrently
mull over a financial
plan aimed at restoring the
liquidity of the State Oil
Fund, which still needs to
be used to subsidize energy
prices, especially for LPG and
NGV. The Energy Minister
believed there would be no
problem if the plan would
involve seeking loans
Point Of Debate
Is Bangkok Sinking ?
Now that the new government
policies have been announced and
debated on and the debris has
settled, one crucial issue stands
out untouched.
What is the long term plan
concerning the future of our
metropolis, Bangkok?
For the fact that the capital is
under threat of flooding and
sinking a la Atlantis is
irrefutable, the only question is
when.
That we have been warned
by International organizations
and Thai scientists alike of
the likelihood and the authorities’
indifference is baffling.
Bangkok is sinking at a rate
of about 4 inches per year because it is built on soft clay not
bedrock and groundwater is pumped out constantly to supply
residential and industrial demand add-
ing to the subsidence.
Climate change from global warming,
increased amount of rainfall, shoreline
recession, land subsidence and urban
congestion are all factors leading to the same conclusion.
Historically, the mangrove swamps and forests on the coast
The minimum wage hike to
January 2011.
The policy is expected to cost
and further plans will be
made to cover civil servants
with lower levels of education.
Rice-mortgage scheme will cause domestic
rice price to increase
The government changed the rice price guarantees policies to a
rice-mortgage scheme in order to benefit rice growing farmers
which is expected to cause domestic rice price to rise.
What People Are Saying :
“Rice-mortgage scheme with the prices announced by the
government will surely increase the income of farmers but in
view of the market , this will affect domestic rice prices and
consumers
can expect to buy rice at higher prices also.
As rice sellers or middle men buy price at higher prices, the rice
prices in the market will move accordingly but it also depends
on how the government releases the rice which it pledges. If it
sells the rice in the country, prices will be maintained otherwise
consumers will be buying rice at 20-30 baht higher per kilogram.
We have to wait and see how the government will solve this
problem.”
Pornthip, Financial and Accounting officer, United Rice
“Advantage of rice-mortgage scheme is that we can earn more
money but the problem is farmers don’t have rice to pledge. Even
as the scheme began, we have only a small amount of rice and
the moisture level is not of milling standard. Mills require rice’s
moisture must not be over 15 % which is difficult. The best I
could do was mill rice at21-22% of moisture.
As I talked to my friends, most farmers prefer rice price
guarantee because it guaranteed that we will definitely profit on
the margin.
Rice-mortgage scheme should not affect the price of rice domestically
as the government will maintain the rice prices and won’t
let rice in the domestic market become too expensive because
they will lose people’s trust, which is not what they would want.”
acted as a natural flood defense system for the city but with industrialization,
land was needed and the mangroves were replaced,
just like how roads were built, replacing canals that acted as a
natural drainage system.
Recently, the Organization for
Economic Co-operation and
Development revealed
the list of major cities that are
exposed to coastal flooding
disasters and Bangkok was
named as one of them.
Governments in other countries
are already drafting policies for
preparedness but the
Thai Governments have been too
embroiled in political strife to focus
on the issue.
Time is running out for Bangkok
as some academics believe the
city can be completely immersed
in water by2030, without proper
planning and policies in place.
By 2100 most agree the capital will
acquire an Atlantis status.
Keeping in mind putting effective disaster management
strategies, land use practices,
protection investment plans in place and
implementing coastal protection
infrastructure requires a lead time of at least
30 years, the time to start is now.
The impact of the government’s oil price cut
policy on gas
The government’s oil price cut policy has seriously affected the
business of gas cylinder stations while previously, the government
used to support gas cylinders for cars.
What People Are Saying :
“Since the government has cut oil taxes, in one month, our
garage has lost 50% of its customers . Previously, customers had
to call in and be registered on the waiting list but now they can
just walk in and get their gas cylinders installed.
In this situation, our garage has to adapt by offering more servies
to customers such as, oil change service and other maintenance
services of cars with gas cylinders. The business is still
continuing without any layoffs as our garage is medium sized.
Large and medium garages are able to adapt but small garages
will be seriously affected .”
Chaiyuth,Gasboydgarage owner.
“Our garage has been seriously affected from the oil price cut
policy. Some days we don’t have any customers. Now, most of the
customers come to our garage and ask will the oil prices go up?
Mostly, they think that since oil prices and gas prices are not so
different they need not install a gas cylinder.
We have adapted by offering promotions, such as 25,000 baht
for a gas installation instead of 22,900 baht in order to convince
customers to use gas..”
Fernando truly understands food, not only
over both restaurants and had to
What was clear to her was that
traditional French cuisine is no longer the popular trend in the market and so
decided to turn Reynard Restaurant into 39 Thirty Nine, French fusion Restaurant. The ground
food but has been applied to the service and the ambience. The service is not as formal as is the norm
Food & Drink
The first impression one gets of Naj Cuisine is that the owners have
done an excellent job of showcasing the charms of Thailand from
their décor to the food and service.
Kan, the owner, narrates how his mother, Luckananaj started the
restaurant more than 25 years ago and worked on the concept of
cooking and serving Thai food which is authentic but is different from
the food that is cooked at home. The thought behind the concept is
that most of the regulars are Thais who would appreciate a culinary
experience that is more diverse than the one they
would get at home.
Luckananaj had created and nurtured a popular
Thai restaurant over the years but it was Kan and
his sister, Ploy, who have taken it to the next step
of making it an institution, with the addition of
Naj Collection Boutique and Naj Cooking School.
Ploy takes care of Naj Collection Boutique, which
is attached to the restaurant and offers a wide
selection of exquisite Thai silk products from
home decor and accessories.
Kan personally looks after the cooking school and teaches most of
the classes himself. He believes learning how to cook should be fun
and people would benefit more from cooking themselves than from
listening to lectures instead. As Kan puts it, ”I emphasize on three
points, firstly, it must be fun, secondly the customer must be able to
any cost.
Otto Duffner, president and
owner of Bei Otto, grew up
in Koegnigsfeld in the Black
forest Region in Southwest
Germany and started
training to be a cook from
the age of
14 when
he spent
several
years
studying
various
regional
German
cuisines.
In 1975,
the
Heidelberg
Chamber of Commerce
awarded him the title of
Master Chef.
When the Singha Bierhaus
opened in 1981, the owners
of Bangkok’s Boonroad
Brewery hired Otto as a chef
for the newly opened outlet
General Manager, Craig Burton is determined ‘The Clubhouse Sports Bar & Grill’ is going to be the
No. 1 Sports Bar in Bangkok and with his ‘hands on’ approach that seems very much within reach.
Born in England, Craig has been in Thailand for six years. Before coming to Bangkok, Craig was
previously running his own bistro in Nongplue, Chonburi, which he sold before moving to the
capital to further his career.
In his first few months he has implemented numerous changes, bringing The Clubhouse to the
public’s attention through aggressive use of social media and in house, by focussing on
creating an atmosphere becoming of a great sports and music venue.
The dining experience is very high on The Clubhouse’s priorities, with a large selection of
western pub favorites, specialized pasta dishes and quality Thai cuisine. Since taking over,
the menu has under gone many changes with additions like Pesto Chicken Fettuccine and
Australian Steaks with a Demi glaze sauce. With a huge variety sure to satisfy everyone’s
tastes great offers are being offered for both lunch and evenings.
The obvious question to ask Craig would be if he feels any different running a place for
someone else compared to his own. He replied “It’s exactly the same.
I might be an employee now but I don’t feel like one as the owners are
very understanding and trust me to do the best for the Clubhouse.
I treat all aspects of the business the same as I would if I was the
owner”.
Both Craig and his team feel they are now laying the foundation for the
business to grow. But are aware that it will require a continuous effort
to keep the high standards being set.
The Clubhouse is spread over two floors on the site of a previous
Korean butcher shop
opposite Giusto on Sukhumvit Soi 23. The ground floor is an ideal
venue for dining and viewing international sports whilst enjoying a
drink and listening to classic rock and popular music.
Upstairs “The Lookout’ is a private and spacious location to hold corporate events or group parties
Tae’s quest for the perfect cup of coffee took him from one coffee shop to the other to no avail. It all started when he left
his job as a media marketing executive and started to accept freelance jobs. Without an office of his own, Tae would meet
potential clients in coffee shops to conduct his business.Sipping endless cups of coffee, he wondered why he could not
find that perfect cup of coffee anywhere. Tae decided to take his quest seriously and open his own coffee shop. He started
learning more about coffee from many coffee specialists all around the world. It took him 4-5 months but by the end of
it he was ready. Next step was the premise itself. He had been eyeing a parking lot in Sukhumvit 24 for a while now and
decided to just ring the doorbell of the house, the space belonged to, and just
ask. They struck a deal and Tae had his first coffee shop of 15 seats, Ohana. It
was not long before he had to expand it to 40 seats. Ohana offers coffee along
with a menu of sandwiches, paninis and baked items as it was his concept to
have good coffee along with good food.Tae admitted that he was still learning
about coffee all the time even after launching Ohana. Following through with the
idea that each outlet should be different, Tae named his next outlet ‘Roast’ and
as the name implies they do the roasting in the outlet as they now have ample
space to do so.Roast, with its bigger kitchen, can offer a more extensive menu
than Ohana and Tae is planning to do so with the introduction of his Tapas and
Dinner menu. The Tapas menu consists of small bites from all over the globe
and the Dinner menu encompasses salads, pastas and simple food. By simple
food, Tae means simply presented without all the fuss even though the sauce for
a particular dish might have taken two days to prepare. Lastly, when asked what does he hope to achieve in the long run, he
replies “I want to improve the quality of coffee that is offered in Thailand, one cup at a time.’
go home and cook the dishes taught and lastly, they must truly
understand the ingredients.”
To make sure that people get to touch and feel the herbs,
an organic garden is grown next to the school for academic
reasons.
“There are so many types of basil for example that is used in
Thai cooking, do you know which one is used in a Tom Yum?”
Most of the Thai food we are eating today is not 100% Thai
anymore with adaptations from other cultures, such as the
“Yum Salmon”. That’s what I am trying to do here, make people
understand and appreciate the original and authentic Thai
recipes.”
Naj Cuisine is on the verge of launching another outlet, “The Local”, whose menu
will be based on traditional and original Thai recipes of old, with names of dishes
like “Fish in a Bamboo” and will include a library full of books, photographs and
items that tells the story of Thai culture, history and cuisine.
“My Philosophy in business? I feel everyone has talent but what makes one
person more successful that others would be if they possess abundant quantities
of persistence and endurance. When things don’t go the way you feel they should
you must try harder. Sometimes, you think you can’t but you can.”
and so started his
career in Thailand.
By 1984, the chef had
established “Bei Otto”
his own restaurant,
together with a bakery
adding on a butchery
and delicatessen later.
The restaurant boasts
plenty of traditional
German dishes, including
Pork Knuckle, Bavarian
Platter, German Mixed
Sausages, Wiener Schnitzel
and more…
with full seating, upper balcony and professional pool table.
Happy hours are from 3pm-8pm Monday to Saturday and
3pm-5pm on Sundays.
Happy Hour is shorter on Sundays as The Clubhouse runs the
fun (and potentially lucrative) ‘Binn Go’ game from 5pm-8pm.
The game ‘Binn-Go’ is a play on the Thai way of asking
for the ‘Checkbin’ and the
luckydraw number game
‘Bingo’. Every time you
purchase a drink during this
period you get to pick a ball,
with free drinks, discounts and
other prizes contained inside.
If you are lucky, you might not
have to pay for any drinks at all
in that specified time! One last
thing, if Craig asks you what
your favorite track is, do not be
surprised if it’s the next track
playing while he has not moved from your side. He loves music
and has a trick where he can bring up nearly any requested
track right from his phone! Just another example of Craig’s
caring and ‘hands on’ approach, making your time at
‘The Clubhouse’ as entertaining and enjoyable as possible.
The Spa Life at Sukhumvit 26 is based on the
Andaman Islands concept with an old house
which is slightly colonial, converted and
redecorated to follow the theme.
The structure
and furniture are
splashes of blue
bring out the feel
On arrival at the
Most of the rooms at Spa life come equipped
with Jaccuzzi, steam and sauna facilities.
An interesting and unique treatment “Guasha”
which is “horns of an animal’ in Chinese was
implemented by one of the earlier Taiwanese
consultants.
The horn of an animal is shaped flat with ridged
edges and used to scrape the skin at particular
points for detoxification.
The signature treatment is the ‘Golden Hot
Stone Therapy’ which involves oil mixed with
pure gold. The oil is presented in a candle from
and when lit, the wax returns to its oil form.
Once the warm oil is slowly poured on the
customer, the masseur begins a deep massage.
Another signature treatment spa life is rolling
The treatment is with organic oil with organic
coconut scrub. The technique involved in
the treatment includes a massage within
itself, which is normally absent from scrub
By Juthamas Pakrajang
Divana opened the doors of its first spa, 10 years
ago when spas were the trend and competition
scarce.
Influenced by the downturn of airline industry,
six flight attendants
got together and
decided that they
were going to be
their own bosses
by launching a
world class spa
and products,
with each of them
taking turns to look
after the business
according to their
flight schedules.
Asked whether
this system of
management
has ever led to
confusion or
conflict, one of the
partners, Laksuree
Detrerkpan said “No, not really. Whoever was
the last person in charge emails a report to keep
others involved and updated, so the next person
can take over from there. Plus, we all manage our
schedules so that we can meet once a week, no
matter what time it is. If we disagree
on any topic we just put it to vote. The
whole procedure is truly democratic!”
The vivacious and sparkling Laksuree
continues “In actuality, the fact that all
of us are still flying is a bonus because
we get to see the latest trends across the
world and that keeps us innovative.”
Judging by the amount of competition
that exists in the market today, a lot of
innovative ideas had had to go into the
development of Divana as a brand.
Divana now boasts of 3 spas, Divana Massage
& Spa, a truly garden & home spa in the heart
of Bangkok, Divana Divine Spa, aesthetic urban
spa, and Divana Virtue Spa, classical luxury spa.
LEISURE 13
From the end of the Baroque age and the death of Bach in 1750 to the rise of Hitler in 1933, Germany transformed from a poor relation among
western nations into a dominant intellectual and cultural force more influential than France, Britain, Italy, Holland, and the United States. In the early
decades of the 20th century, German artists, writers, philosophers, scientists, and engineers were leading their freshly-unified country to new and
undreamed of heights, and by 1933, they had won more Nobel prizes than anyone else and more than the British and Americans combined. But this
genius was cut down in its prime with the rise and subsequent fall of Adolf Hitler and his fascist Third Reich-a legacy of evil that has overshadowed
the nation’s contributions ever since. Yet how did the Germans achieve their pre-eminence beginning in the mid-18th century? In this fascinating
cultural history, Peter Watson goes back through time to explore the origins of the German genius, how it flourished and shaped our lives, and, most
importantly, to reveal how it continues to shape our world. As he convincingly demonstarates, while we may hold other European cultures in higher
esteem, it was German thinking-from Bach to Nietzsche to Freud-that actually shaped modern America and Britain in ways that resonate today.
Synopsis : The much anticipated and beautifully illustrated Sunday Times Bestselling Biography Coco Chanel: and the Life was first released to great
critical acclaim in 2010. Now the paperback edition of Justine Picardie’s biography of the French fashion designer Gabrielle Chanel has arrived. The
Mail on Sunday calls it ‘gripping’, the Sunday Times declares it to be ‘fascinating’, the Telegraph ‘elegant’ and ‘brilliant’; while the Daily Mail hails it
as a ‘vividly told account, in the style of Chanel herself’. This is the definitive biography of a heroine who founded the most successful fashion label in
history; a woman that transformed her life into a myth veiled in enigma and scandal; whose talent and innovation endures beyond her own pioneering
sartorial creations. Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life was written by Justine Picardie as a celebration and investigation of Chanel’s phenomenal
achievements. Shortlisted for the Galaxy National Book Awards, selling over 50,000 copies thus far, and now translated into 15 languages worldwide,
this eloquent biography has revealed the hidden secrets of the legendary Chanel.
With the aim to foster a love of reading among Thai people and to promote a learning society where people develop creative thinking
programs, intellectually-stimulating seminars, and much more. Tel. 02-9549560-4, www.thailandbookfair.com
Katia’s alto voice and her ability to pull around the tempo of songs in dramatic surges - alternately wistful, flirtatious, heartbroken or in fullthroated
vibrato – is perfect for the intimate drama of Lisbon fado (Portuguese ‘blues’ songs traditionally sung in smoky tavernas). In 2010
Katia received the highest accolade for a Fadista - the “Best Performer of Fado” award - from the Amalia Rodrigues Foundation. Katia’s
songbook is selected from the great contemporary Portuguese poets and she will be backed by Portugese guitarra (a type of 12-stringed
mandolin), classical guitar and double bass.
The undisputed grand dame of flamenco and Spain’s ambassador for flamenco to the world, the whole ensemble of Ballet Nacional España
(NBE) - over 50 performers – will be on stage. La Leyenda is Antonio’s stunning tribute to diva Carmen Amaya. Two women portray her
public and private sides in outstanding performances culminating in a magnificent closing seguiriya (a flamenco style).
Dulia, choreographed by hot duo Rojas & Rodriguez, is a showcase of excellent ensemble castanet playing and passionate technique. NBE
is at the top of their latest creative cycle and will fittingly bring the curtain down on this year’s festival. For more Information – www.
