Mongolia eyes 50% stake in key Oyu Tolgoi
project
Mongolia is seeking greater control of one the biggest mining
projects in the country, which is
being developed by Rio Tinto and
Ivanhoe Mines.
The government said it wants to
raise its stake in the Oyu Tolgoi
project to 50% from 34%.
According to the original contract
signed in 2009, Mongolia can
increase its stake only after 30 years.
When completed, the project is
expected to account for as much as 5% of Mongolia’s gross
domestic product.

German business confidence dips in
September
A closely watched survey shows that German business
confidence sank again in September but only modestly.
The Ifo institute said Monday its monthly confidence index
was down to 107.5 points from 108.7 in August. That
followed a larger fall the previous month another sign that
momentum in Europe’s biggest economy is slowing.
The German economy barely grew in the second quarter.
Mounting fears about the eurozone’s debt crisis and another
recession in the U.S. also have been weighing on companies’
outlooks.
Many economists had expected a larger drop in the Ifo index
this month.
Boeing to deliver first 787
Dreamliner
US planemaker Boeing will officially deliver its first 787 Dreamliner
to Japan’s All Nippon Airways later, after three years of delays.
The Dreamliner had originally been scheduled for delivery in 2008, but Boeing has
suffered a string of setbacks, the latest being an onboard fire during test flights in January.
The fuel-efficient plane is made from lightweight composite materials.
Boeing plans to make 10 of the planes per month from 2013.
The plane will be presented to All Nippon Airways in Everett, Washington before being flown to Tokyo on Tuesday.

More than two million people have been affected by floods in India as
torrential rains lash Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states.
Heavy monsoon rains have been battering parts of India for the past
fortnight.
More than 80 people have died in
flood-related incidents, and some areas have
been cut off by rising waters.
Heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh have triggered
off house and wall collapses, and a flood alert
has been issued in eight districts in Bihar.
In Orissa, the worst affected state, vast parts of 10 districts have been
inundated by flood waters, officials say.

Afghan employee kills U.S. citizen at
Kabul CIA base
An Afghan employee of the U.S. government opened fire inside a
CIA office in Kabul on Sunday evening, killing an American and
injuring a second, U.S. and Afghan officials said, in the second
major breach of embassy security in two weeks.
The attacker was killed, and the injured U.S. citizen was taken
to a military hospital with non-life threatening injuries, U.S.
embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said on Monday.
It was not clear if the U.S. citizens were victims of a rogue employee
who had been won over to the insurgent cause, or just the
escalation of an argument in a city were tensions are high and
many people carry guns. There are precedents for both.

Vietnamese sailors are home after ransom
paid to pirates
Twenty-four Vietnamese sailors are safe at home after an
eight-month ordeal as prisoners of Somali pirates.
Officials and analysts said the cargo ship MV Hoang Son Sun
and its crew were released last week after a Vietnamese
state-owned shipping company paid the pirates a ransom of
more than $2 million.

Coffee cuts depression risk in women
Those who drank 3 cups of coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop the mental illness
Drinking coffee may lower women’s risk of depression, a new study says.Women in the study who
drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop depression
over a 10-year period compared to those who drank one cup of coffee or less per week.
The researchers cautioned, however, that the new study only shows an association between coffee
consumption and depression risk, and cannot prove that drinking coffee reduces risk of depression in
women.
The study, which included more than 50,000 women in the United
States, is the largest of its kind, the researchers, from the Harvard
School of Public Health in Boston, said.
The findings are in line with earlier studies that have found a link
between moderate coffee consumption and a reduced risk of suicide.
The new study is just the latest to suggest coffee consumption
has health benefits. Earlier work has found an association between
drinking coffee and a reduced risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer
and stroke.
“Taken together, these results reassure coffee drinkers that there seem to exist no glaringly
deleterious health consequences to coffee consumption,” Dr. Seth Berkowitz, wrote in an editor’s note
accompanying the new study.
Because the study only shows a correlation between coffee and the risk of depression, it’s too soon for
doctors to recommend coffee consumption to patients, Berkowitz said.

Early Monroe photos, copyrights to sell at
auction
Copyrights and images from Marilyn Monroe’s first photo shoot
are hitting the auction block.
A bankruptcy judge in Florida ruled earlier
this week that photos taken in 1946 of Norma
Jeane Dougherty who went on to become the
iconic Monroe will be sold at auction to settle
the debts of the photographer.
Joseph Jasgur’s photos, negatives and image
copyrights will be sold in December by Julien’s
Auctions. The collection also includes several
model-release forms Dougherty signed for
Jasgur in Hollywood.
Darren Julien, chief of Julien’s Auctions, said the photos have
not been widely distributed and the collection has been locked
up in court battles for more than two decades. He said the sale
is significant because “it’s very rare to see something where you
can buy a copyrighted image of (Monroe), especially of her first
photo shoot.”

Actor Sean Penn worked to get Americans
from Iran
U.S. actor Sean Penn engaged in attempts to secure the release of
two Americans freed by Iran this week, flying to Venezuela to ask
President Hugo Chavez to intervene with Iran’s leader, a source
close to the release process said on Friday.
Since Tehran freed Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer on Wednesday
details have emerged about the efforts to win their freedom,
which involved the United Nations, Iraq and Oman as well as
Chavez, who is a fiery critic of the United States.
Venezuela’s deputy foreign minister told Reuters on Thursday
that Chavez brought up the case with his Iranian ally Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad after being alerted to the Americans’ plight by
friends in U.S. “intellectual circles.”
“The American ‘intellectual’ who took up the case with him was
Sean Penn,” the source told Reuters.
“Penn was very committed to the case ... He flew to Caracas
several months ago to raise it with Chavez and he kept on it,” the
source said.
Penn’s spokeswoman in the United States confirmed this account,
but would give no further details.
The two Americans had been in Iranian custody since their arrest
in July 2009 on the border with Iraq, where they said they
were hiking. They were jailed for espionage.Penn, known for his
political and social activism, won best actor Oscars for his roles in
the Clint Eastwood-directed drama “Mystic River” in 2003 and
as slain gay politician Harvey Milk in the 2008 movie “Milk.”

Scientists discover an organizing
principle for our sense of smell
based on pleasantness
The fact
that certain
smells cause
us pleasure
or disgust
would seem
to be a matter
of personal
taste. But new
research at the
Weizmann
Institute shows that odors can be rated on a
scale of pleasantness, and this turns out to be an
organizing principle for the way we experience
smell. The findings, which appeared September
26 in Nature Neuroscience,reveal a correlation
between the response of certain nerves to
particular scents and the pleasantness of those
scents. Based on this correlation, the researchers
could tell by measuring the nerve responses
whether a subject found a smell pleasant or
unpleasant.

NASA to demonstrate
communications via laser beam
It currently takes 90 minutes to transmit
high-resolution images from Mars, but NASA
would like to dramatically reduce that time to
just minutes. A new optical communications
system that NASA plans to demonstrate in
2016 will lead the way and even allow the
streaming of high-definition video from
distances beyond the Moon.

World is truly a stage for London Shakespeare fest
YesterLondon’s Globe theater on Tuesday said will host all of
Shakespeare’s 37 plays performed in 37 languages by 37 companies in a
stage festival with acting troupes from Afghanistan and newly independent
South Sudan.
“Globe to Globe” will run for six weeks, starting from its launch on April
23 next year. It is part of the London 2012 Festival, itself the climax of
the Cultural Olympiad, a four-year celebration of arts and culture in
Britain leading up to the summer Olympics in the capital city next year.
Globe to Globe kicks off with an adaptation of Shakespeare’s poem “Venus
and Adonis” performed in Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, Afrikaans and
South African English.

X-ray reveals hidden Goya painting
A previously unknown painting by Francisco de Goya has been found hidden underneath
one of his masterpieces, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has announced.
The unfinished work was discovered underneath Goya’s Portrait Of Don Ramon Satue,
using a new X-ray technique.
It is thought to depict a French general, and may even portray Napoleon Bonaparte’s
brother, Joseph.
The Rijksmuseum says the Spanish master may have covered up the portrait for political
reasons.
Joseph Bonaparte was briefly King Of Spain, from 1808-1813.
When the Napoleonic army was driven out and Ferdinand VII restored to the throne,
Goya, who retained the painting, would have wanted to distance himself from the French
regime.
The artist had served the French king and feared reprisals, despite receiving an official
pardon and being reinstated as first court painter.Eventually, unhappy with Ferdinand
VII’s autocratic regime, he applied for permission to settle in France, where he lived until his death in 1828.

The new painting was revealed using a technique developed by the University of Antwerp and the Delft University of Technology.
The high-resolution x-ray scan allows you to see intricate brushwork and detail Bombarding a piece of art with powerful x-rays, causes
atoms in the picture’s layers of paint to emit “fluorescent” x-rays of
their own, which indicate the chemicals they originated from. That
enables a colour map of the hidden picture to be produced.
The technique was successfully tried out on a Van Gogh painting two
years ago, revealing a portrait of a peasant woman behind the work
Patch of Grass, from 1887.
Since then, a mobile version of the x-ray “scanner” has been developed,
allowing museums to examine paintings that are too delicate to be
moved or touched.
According to the Rijksmuseum, the Goya painting is a “formal portrait
of a man wearing uniform”.
The detail on his face was never completed, but “the decorations
embellishing the uniform are those of the highest ranks of a chivalric
order instituted by Joseph Bonaparte when his brother, the emperor
Napoleon, created him King Of Spain”.
“Only 15 generals, plus Joseph, were entitled to wear the uniform and
medal, although so far it has proved impossible to pin down exactly
which of them is depicted.”
Goya’s portrait of Spanish judge Ramon Satue, which was concealing the Napoleonic painting, is on display at Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen in Rotterdam, until the opening of the Rijkmuseum’s main building in 2013.

The Menil Collection Announces Return of
Byzantine Frescoes to Cyprus in 2012
After more than two decades in Houston, the beloved Byzantine
frescoes will go back to Cyprus in 2012. While this moment is
bittersweet, the story of these frescoes from their rescue, to their
long-term loan to the Menil, and now to their return very much
reflects the essence of the Menil Collection, its focus on the aesthetic
and the spiritual, and our responsible
stewardship of works from
other nations and cultures.
In 1983, Dominique de
Menil, founder of the Menil
Collection, was presented
with an extraordinary
prospect: to acquire two
13th century frescoes from
Cyprus. Mrs. de Menil was
struck by their beauty and
understood immediately their art historical significance.
However, after further research Mrs. de Menil learned that the
frescoes had been stolen from their original home in a small votive
chapel in Lysi, Cyprus.
That knowledge led to an act of extraordinary generosity in fact,
a series of generous actions that eventually engaged many other
people. First, the frescoes were acquired by the Menil Collection
on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus. Then, the
Menil Foundation supervised the restoration of the frescoes,
which had been cut into more than 30 pieces when they were
stolen. In gratitude, the Church lent the frescoes to the Menil on a
long-term basis, for presentation in a consecrated chapel in
Houston. The Byzantine Fresco Chapel opened to the public in
1997, with support for its construction provided by donors in
Houston and across the country.
Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have seen the
frescoes and experienced the majesty of Cypriot Byzantine art
and religion. Moreover, the frescoes’ installation in the Byzantine
Fresco Chapel a consecrated space that simultaneously honors
their sacred origins and the tragic history of their looting from
their true home church in Lysi includes a profound, sacred
dimension and is therefore different from traditional museum
presentations of antiquities.
While the loan of the frescoes formally concludes in February
2012, this will not be the end of their story or the story of the
building. The Menil is exploring how best to use it in the future,
in ways that carry forward the museum’s mission

rice-mortgage scheme in order to benefit rice growing farmers
which is expected to cause domestic rice price to rise.

return.Partnering with Reynard, a French chef, they
renovated a two storey place with the upstairs called
Reynard Restaurant, serving traditional French food
and the ground floor, 39 Bar and Restaurant with
French Fusion food. Reynard ran the restaurant
upstairs and Pink, the fusion restaurant. When the two
decided to part ways, Pink took
over both restaurants and had to
rethink the whole strategy again.
What was clear to her was that
traditional French cuisine is no longer the popular trend in the market and so
decided to turn Reynard Restaurant into 39 Thirty Nine, French fusion Restaurant. The ground
floor is being redecorated and will emerge as a wine bar.The fusion at 39 is not limited to just the
food but has been applied to the service and the ambience.The service is not as formal as is the norm

done an excellent job of showcasing the charms of Thailand from

Kan, the owner, narrates how his mother, Luckananaj started the
restaurant more than 25 years ago and worked on the concept of
cooking and serving Thai food which is authentic but is different from
the food that is cooked at home. The thought behind the concept is
that most of the regulars are Thais who would appreciate a culinary
experience that is more diverse than the one they
would get at home.
Luckananaj had created and nurtured a popular
Thai restaurant over the years but it was Kan and
his sister, Ploy, who have taken it to the next step
of making it an institution, with the addition of
Naj Collection Boutique and Naj Cooking School.
Ploy takes care of Naj Collection Boutique, which
is attached to the restaurant and offers a wide
selection of exquisite Thai silk products from
home decor and accessories.
Kan personally looks after the cooking school and teaches most of
the classes himself. He believes learning how to cook should be fun
and people would benefit more from cooking themselves than from
listening to lectures instead. As Kan puts it, ”I emphasize on three
points, firstly, it must be fun, secondly the customer must be able to
any cost.

General Manager, Craig Burton is determined ‘The Clubhouse Sports Bar & Grill’ is going to be the
No. 1 Sports Bar in Bangkok and with his ‘hands on’ approach that seems very much within reach.
Born in England, Craig has been in Thailand for six years. Before coming to Bangkok, Craig was
previously running his own bistro in Nongplue, Chonburi, which he sold before moving to the
capital to further his career.
In his first few months he has implemented numerous changes, bringing The Clubhouse to the
public’s attention through aggressive use of social media and in house, by focussing on
creating an atmosphere becoming of a great sports and music venue.
The dining experience is very high on The Clubhouse’s priorities, with a large selection of
western pub favorites, specialized pasta dishes and quality Thai cuisine. Since taking over,
the menu has under gone many changes with additions like Pesto Chicken Fettuccine and
Australian Steaks with a Demi glaze sauce. With a huge variety sure to satisfy everyone’s
tastes great offers are being offered for both lunch and evenings.
The obvious question to ask Craig would be if he feels any different running a place for
someone else compared to his own. He replied “It’s exactly the same.
I might be an employee now but I don’t feel like one as the owners are
very understanding and trust me to do the best for the Clubhouse.
I treat all aspects of the business the same as I would if I was the
owner”.
Both Craig and his team feel they are now laying the foundation for the
business to grow. But are aware that it will require a continuous effort
to keep the high standards being set.
The Clubhouse is spread over two floors on the site of a previous
Korean butcher shop
opposite Giusto on Sukhumvit Soi 23. The ground floor is an ideal
venue for dining and viewing international sports whilst enjoying a
drink and listening to classic rock and popular music.
Upstairs “The Lookout’ is a private and spacious location to hold corporate events or group parties
Tae’s quest for the perfect cup of coffee took him from one coffee shop to the other to no avail.It all started when he left
his job as a media marketing executive and started to accept freelance jobs. Without an office of his own, Tae would meet
potential clients in coffee shops to conduct his business.Sipping endless cups of coffee, he wondered why he could not
find that perfect cup of coffee anywhere. Tae decided to take his quest seriously and open his own coffee shop. He started
learning more about coffee from many coffee specialists all around the world. It took him 4-5 months but by the end of
it he was ready. Next step was the premise itself. He had been eyeing a parking lot in Sukhumvit 24 for a while now and
decided to just ring the doorbell of the house, the space belonged to, and just
ask. They struck a deal and Tae had his first coffee shop of 15 seats, Ohana. It
was not long before he had to expand it to 40 seats. Ohana offers coffee along
with a menu of sandwiches, paninis and baked items as it was his concept to
have good coffee along with good food.Tae admitted that he was still learning
about coffee all the time even after launching Ohana. Following through with the

as the name implies they do the roasting in the outlet as they now have ample

than Ohana and Tae is planning to do so with the introduction of his Tapas and
Dinner menu. The Tapas menu consists of small bites from all over the globe
and the Dinner menu encompasses salads, pastas and simple food. By simple
food, Tae means simply presented without all the fuss even though the sauce for
a particular dish might have taken two days to prepare. Lastly, when asked what does he hope to achieve in the long run, he
replies “I want to improve the quality of coffee that is offered in Thailand, one cup at a time.’
