Reciprocating compressors are used in commercial automotive with air brake system.They are in use for more than six decades. Development of a compressor requires an insight intothe design parameters and their effects on performance, cost and life of the compressor.Reciprocating air compressors are positive displacement machines that they increasethe pressure of air by reducing its volume. This means they are taking in successive volumes ofair which is confined within a closed space and elevating this air to a higher pressure. Thereciprocating air compressor accomplishes this by a piston within a cylinder as the compressingand displacing element. Single-stage and two-stage reciprocating compressors are commerciallyavailable. Single-stage compressors are generally used for pressures in the range of 500 kPa to900 kPa. Two-stage compressors are generally used for higher pressures in the range of 900kPa to 1800 kPa. The reciprocating air compressor is single acting when the compression isaccomplished using only one side of the piston. A compressor using both sides of the piston isconsidered double acting. Load reduction is achieved by unloading individual cylinders. Typically,this is accomplished by throttling the suction pressure to the cylinder or bypassing air either withinor outside the compressor. Capacity control is achieved by varying the speed in engine-drivenunits through fuel flow control. Reciprocating air compressors are available either as air-cooledor water-cooled in lubricated and non-lubricated configurations, may be packaged, and providea wide range of pressure and capacity selections [1].A reciprocating compressor consists of a crankshaft (driven by a gas engine, electricmotor, or turbine) attached to a connecting rod, which transfers the rotary motion of the crankshaftto the piston. The piston travels back and forth in a cylinder. The piston acting within the cylinderthen compresses the air contained within that cylinder. Air enters the cylinder through a suctionvalve at suction pressure and is compressed to reach the desired discharge pressure. When theair reaches the desired pressure, it is then discharged through a discharge valve. Desireddischarge pressure can be reached through utilisation of either a single or double acting cylinder.In a double acting cylinder, compression takes place both at the head end and crank end of thecylinder. The cylinder can be designed to accommodate any pressure or capacity, thus makingthe reciprocating compressor the most popular in the gas industry.
