1 INTRODUCTION TO BASICS OF A PISTON CYLINDER COMPRESSOR(RACHIT LAHARIA)Building a concept model for any project may be a challenging, yet interesting task. Athorough understanding of the underlying scientific concepts is necessary and a mentor withexpertise in the project is invaluable. It is also best to work as part of a team to provide morebrainstorming power. In industry and engineering, it is common practice for a team of people towork together in building a model, with the individual team members bringing different areas ofexpertise to the project [1]. To start the concept modelling initial basics are required to beunderstood thoroughly, before applying them to the mathematical modelling. Once the model hasbeen developed and applied to the problem, the resulting model solution must be analysed andchecked for accuracy. It may be required to modifying the model for obtaining reasonableoutcome. This refining process should continue until obtaining a model that agrees as closely aspossible with the real-world observation.A reciprocating compressor consists of a crankshaft (driven either by a gas engine,electric motor, or turbine) attached to a connecting rod, which transfers the rotary motion of thecrankshaft to the piston. The piston travels back and forth in a cylinder [1]. The piston actingwithin the cylinder then compresses the air contained within that cylinder. Air enters the cylinderthrough a suction valve at suction pressure and is compressed to reach the desired dischargepressure. When the air reaches the desired pressure, it is then discharged through a dischargevalve. Desired discharge pressure can be reached through utilization of either a single or doubleacting cylinder. In a double acting cylinder, compression takes place at both the head end andcrank end of the cylinder. The cylinder can be designed to accommodate any pressure orcapacity, making the reciprocating compressor the most popular in the automobile industry [2].These compressors can be classified as: -1.1 Positive displacement machine1.2 Dynamic impulse machine1.1 Positive displacement machineA machine where a fluid (air) is physically trapped between two relatively movingcomponents and forced to occupy lower volume and hence increasing the pressure of the fluid,this type of machines is called Positive displacement Machine. The function of a compressor isto take a definite quantity of fluid and deliver it at a required pressure, and most often air. To dothis, mechanical work must be supplied to the air compressor, by an electric motor, turbine orengine. The work done by the air compressor on the air, and this is called as the indicated workof the compressor.Page 8 of 93
