A new home is being created for the

Cleanroom Future Campus. In Frankfurt

am Main. In the middle of Germany.

In the middle of Europe. From March

2023, the topics of cleanroom technology

will be presented more actively than

ever before, with lots of practical application

in courses and events. The unique

concept of “cleanroom technology to

touch”, developed by Cleanroom Future,

has proven successful for years and creates

an ideal learning environment for

cleanroom managers, for the direct implementation

of ideas and inspirations in

operation.

CHALLENGE TRAINING

Qualified employees are essential

INTRODUCTION

Becoming better.

Cleanrooms place high demands on

employees. They have to wear protective

clothing and move slowly, not speak

much, not eat, drink or chew gum, and

they are ideally non-smokers. Beards,

makeup, jewellery, skin diseases and

loose hair are also out of the question.

So how do you tell your employees that

their behaviour influences the ambient

conditions, process safety and product

quality in the cleanroom? And how do

you convey this knowledge so that it is

not forgotten after a couple of weeks?

One possibility is to set up your own training

programmes according to standardised

procedures. To do this it is necessary

to have sufficient training capacities

and capable trainers. By repeating them

at fixed intervals, the training courses on

hygiene, behaviour and manufacturing

processes can always be conducted with

the same quality.

Another possibility is to have the employees

qualified by professional knowledge

providers. This can be especially useful

if the saying “the prophet is not accepted

in his own country” applies. Users often

underestimate the restrictive effects of

management personnel providing learning

content that are due solely to their

position or who they are. These situations

are often influenced by conflicts,

workloads and interpersonal difficulties.

A seriously intended development of talent

succeeds if the measures are properly

documented, monitored and analysed.

The findings from this provide a sound

basis for decision-making regarding content,

duration and measures. And better

results.

Frank Duvernell – CEO Cleanroom Future

Becoming better - our motivation for

you.

What this involves can be quickly explained.

We at Cleanroom Future sat

down together and talked our heads

off about the meaning of our company.

What makes the Cleanroom Future Organisation

special? How do users benefit

from our services? What do participants

gain from the events and courses? How

can people’s motivation and enthusiasm

be expressed in a sentence?

And finally, we came to the conclusion

that we want to help people to become

better.

Yes, that’s exactly it. That‘s exactly what

we get out of bed to do. It is exactly this

mission that fills us with pride and accompanies

us in our thinking and actions.

We see ourselves as a platform for

cleanroom managers and for the conveying

of information, knowledge and

expertise.

This is our slogan for more efficiency,

innovation and creativity in cleanrooms:

Becoming better.

TRAINING TO BE A FACILITY MANAGER FOR CLEANROOM CLEANING

Trends towards certified cleanroom cleaning staff

In an increasing number of invitations to tender one can read

that the requirements and performance of the cleaning is to be

carried out by certified cleanroom cleaning personnel and proven

according to ISO 14644. There is no official certification

for this.

At Cleanroom Future, a format was created in which the cleaning

managers can attend a two-day course to be a certified

Facility Manager for Cleanroom Cleaning. The contents and

evaluated final tests are based on the requirements of ISO

14644-5, VDI guideline 2083/5.1 and the current Annex1 of

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

cleaning with certificate

The participants are enabled to apply the typical requirements

and to pass them on professionally to cleaning personnel in their

own training courses. This creates a standard worthy of recognition.

Cleanroom planners and managers from facility management

can thus refer to this course in their tenders if they want

to evaluate a comparable precondition between the providers.

4 Cleanroom: Workshop CLEANROOM-JOURNAL

OPEN-AIR WORKSHOP

Top ideas that stay down-to-earth

During the Corona pandemic in the

summer of 2021, Cleanroom Future

created a new concept to provide more

safety during face-to-face seminars: a

two-day exclusive open-air workshop

in the Swiss mountains at an altitude of

1,200 metres.

In the Bernese Oberland, where the

air is particularly pure and good for

thinking, cleanroom managers and

suppliers find freshness, sunshine and

far-sightedness at a rustic farmhouse -

ideal conditions for achieving the best

possible results from the workshop in

exchange with other participants and

the speaker Frank Duvernell.

The topics for the cleanroom managers’

workshop range from the recruitment

and management of employees

to purchasing strategies and the design

and operation of cleanrooms. Particular

focuses are the handling of cleanroom

purity, and the improvement of personnel’s

behaviour and of the clothing

systems.

The workshop for suppliers, on the

other hand, centres around topics for

greater success in the cleanroom sector.

The main focus is on increasing the

value of products and services, their optimal

positioning with clean room managers

and increasing market activities.

The knowledge acquired in the seminar

is discussed and deepened in a casual

atmosphere with hearty delicacies and

mountain spring water. The ideas and

inspirations offer high utility for im-

mediate implementation in day-to-day

business.

Overnight accommodation is organised

in the valley, in a hotel typical of the region,

and a shuttle service ensures safe

transfer to and from the farmhouse. The

ride through the picturesque mountain

landscape to the farmhouse already creates

the mood for a way of working that

can be not just effective but also a fun experience.

The beneficial mountain air and

the open expanses of the landscape add

an extra dimension to this learning space.

OPEN-SPACE WORKSHOP

Ideas for decision makers

Different technologies place different

demands on their production environments.

But a decision that is now regarded

as up-to-date can soon run into a

dead end with excessive costs and useless

equipment. Projects for a pure production

environment can very quickly become

oversized. Especially when regulatory or

customer requirements are over-fulfilled

as a precautionary measure. Approaching

the projects with restraint and thinking

from the lowest requirement to the highest

requires specialist knowledge and

experience. The participants get to know

both in our open-air workshops. Important

insights support the decision-making

processes for planning, construction,

qualification and operation and

should ultimately ensure greater efficiency

and cost-effectiveness.

FOR PLANNING, CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN

Controlled area – cleanroom: Learning for the future

The question is, when is it sensible to install

a controlled area and when a cleanroom?

Is it meant to be just an entry-level

solution or a long-term measure? What

costs and risks can arise for the warranty?

How can production capacities be

flexibly configured and how can existing

production be upgraded without interruption?

The range of topics is being expanded by

the innovative energy with which cleanroom

technology is processing. Useful

and disruptive switches are presented.

The day is rounded off with an AMC

workshop. AMC stands for Airborne

Molecular Contamination and comprises

all gaseous impurities which may be

harmful for certain product surfaces and

are therefore undesirable in those clean

rooms. Increasing technologisation is

increasing demand for and dealings with

AMC processes.

There is a need for solutions arrived at by

exchanging experiences.

Focuses:

• From controlled area to a cleanroom

• Requirements for cleanroom technology

• Flexible solutions for renovation and

new construction

• Innovation in cleanroom technolgoy

• Challenges with AMC

SPECIAL ISSUE 2023

Cleanroom: Innovation 5

USING CLEANROOM TECHNOLOGY – NOW.NEXT.FUTURE.

A wake-up call in seven chapters

The fourth industrial revolution - Industry

4.0 - is in full swing. Technological

trends such as the Internet of Things,

smart manufacturing, 3D printing, artificial

intelligence, robotics and big data

are drastically changing our production

and working environments.

Self-driving cars, clothing that can measure

fever and trend assessments from

leading figures.

Against the background of his more

than 37 years of entrepreneurship in cleanroom

technology, author Frank Duvernell

considers the future viability of

the industry and comes to an alarming

conclusion. The clean room industry is

to a large extent insufficiently prepared

for these changes and is at the same time

overlooking the potential for qualitative

growth and increasing added value.

Full order books and above-average

growth often, he argues, disguised the

need for investment in technology, bu-

siness models and personnel development.

The book sees itself as a wake-up

call and wants to encourage people to

throw away tried and tested structures

and ways of thinking and to face up to

the upcoming technological leaps with

a modern, proactive culture of innovation.

„Of course, high investments and problems

with data protection or slow internet

discourage many entrepreneurs.

They overlook the fact that digitalisation

is not just about buying new technology.

When people, machines and industrial

processes network intelligently in Industry

4.0, our working and living worlds

change dramatically.

For companies, digitalisation means

more use of technology and rapid changes

in business models and organisational

structures. If we give ourselves too

much time for the necessary changes

then others will overtake us”.

MODERN DESIGN OF CLEANROOMS

Strategies against white noise

White symbolises perfect cleanliness and

purity. White has therefore been the ideal

colour for every cleanroom right from

the beginning. For many years, this was

never questioned and so it went without

saying that every cleanroom was designed

to be completely and purely white.

However, colour expert Alfred Schleicher,

owner of the Schleicher colour studio

in Karlsruhe, discovered something

astonishing in his studies: in an entirely

white room, the human eye lacks any way

of focussing. In 2014, in “Cleanroom

Magazine”, Schleicher first named this

phenomenon “white noise”. This noise

tires the eyes and reduces employees’

ability to concentrate. In contrast to this,

Schleicher noted, bright colours, colour

gradients and edges stimulate the eye,

offering it focus points and providing

orientation. Plants also have a calming

effect and a positive influence on the

well-being and motivation of employees.

This reduces sickness-related work absences

and reject rates.

The positive effects of colour and design

in the clean room are also confirmed by

the employees of MED-EL in Innsbruck.

This Austrian technology company has

created a cleanroom with a unique view

of the Alps. An innovative idea! How

did the company come up with that?

Production manager Alexander Mayr

says: “We read about white noise and the

positive effects of colours in cleanrooms

in “Cleanroom Magazine” and then we

thought a lot about how we could make

the working atmosphere and the rooms

more pleasant. Then we had the idea: The

most beautiful view is right on our doorstep.

So we had the window installed and

are fascinated time after time at how well

it works.” Opposite the panoramic window

a mirror was installed in the clean

room. This ensures not only more depth,

but also more colour and nature in the

cleanroom. But the mirror has another

positive effect: Employees can check the

correct fit of their clothes at any time and

thus avoid possible contamination risks.

But there does not always have to be a

complete conversion. The use of colour

and the design of furnishings can

bring new energy to a cleanroom. This

way, maximum improvements can be

achieved at little cost and effort.

EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION IN THE CLEANROOM

Creativity is more than colouring

Giving an impression of space in a cleanroom

is not just a question of including

colour.

A blue floor. With tonal gradations to

distinguish the zones. Many users already

call this creative.

However, it takes more than a few pops

of colour to turn a cleanroom environment

that is very cool and not very motivating

in itself into a human-friendly

working environment.

More and more cleanroom users are realising

that a more creative cleanroom

environment is more attractive for applicants

and can increase productivity

among existing employees.

THE PATH TO A CREATIVE CLEANROOM

Time for a redesign

There are more and more of them.

Cleanroom users who have recognized

the necessity and importance of the environment’s

impact on employee productivity.

They are looking for creative solutions

for the design of their cleanrooms

and often face the problem that there is

hardly anything available. Whether it’s

clothing, furnishings, wall surfaces or

digital display technologies. Many places

offer only standard versions. They are

the easiest to sell.

And it is precisely

at this point that a

decision needs to be

taken to stick with

the idea and to not

allow oneself to be

dissuaded.

Implementation often fails in the first

step. Where do I start and what is meant

to be the end result? For this purpose,

Cleanroom Future offers a consulting

approach that was developed as a

four-module workshop as the basis for a

creative concept.

The first module is about the goals of the

„Change begins at the end

of your comfort zone“

- Roy T. Bennet -

design and possibilities for incorporating

the communication of information and

knowledge. Two modules then deal with

finding out the wishes and objectives of

the management and then of the cleanroom

employees according to defined

questionnaires. These are evaluated and

presented in the fourth module in such

a way that an initial colour and creativity

concept can be presented from this and

drafted onto the planned cleanroom system.

This approach

incorporates all the

parties involved

and will reduce resistance.

This status

can then be passed

on to the cleanroom

planner, who

can add it to the required tenders. The

sooner this concept is included in the

planning phase, the less the cost of implementation

will be. In some projects it

is only 0.25% of the investment volume.

So it’s not that hard to start off a creative
