WELCOME TO BOWER FOLD 

FROM DIRECTOR, KEITH SMART 

A very warm welcome to all the players, officials and 

supporters of Cammell Laird FC I hope you have had a 

trouble free journey to Stalybridge and all have a safe 

trip home after the match. 

Celtic come into this game in pretty 

good form, and following two victories, 

our last outing saw Celtic pick up 

a valuable point in very difficult 

conditions at Lancaster City. Hopefully, 

despite Saturday’s game being calledoff 

we can maintain the good run of 

form, build on it and continue to pickup 

results and tonight progress in the 

Senior Cup. 

Many of you will have read the 

statement put out by the Club last 

Wednesday evening concerning 

the present financial pressures. 

The current economic situation and 

increasing costs has meant that our 

income has been less than anticipated 

and we have had to make the difficult 

decision to reduce the playing budget. 

That reduction could take one of 

two forms, or a combination of both. 

Some players may leave the Club and 

some players may agree to revised 

terms, we are still working through 

that. However those changes manifest 

themselves, we will endeavour to 

maintain as competitive a squad as 

we can, for Chris to continue to do 

his great work and push us up the 

table. Our aim continues to be that 

we stabilise the club’s finances and 

ensure its continued existence. 

Support this season has been 

absolutely fantastic, with numbers 

steadily increasing, both at home and 

away. The interaction between players 

and fans at the end of games is 

wonderful to see and the players really 

do get a buzz from it. There are some 

fundraising events planned for the 

upcoming weeks, so we hope fans get 

behind those events and help us raise 

some valuable funds for the Club. The 

SCSA will be promoting these events 

alongside the club. 

On the subject of supporters. We 

have recently had a few complaints 

from some of our own fans that a 

tiny minority of our supporters have 

been using unacceptable language 

in chants and comments, particularly 

to opposing goalkeepers. We want 

every one of our supporters to have 

a great time when watching Celtic, 

but we cannot allow the reputation of 

the Club to be damaged in any way 

by the use of unacceptable language. 

There are serious sanctions the 

football authorities can impose upon 

us, should any complaints be made 

against us. So, please get behind the 

team, enjoy the game, shout and sing 

your heart out, but please think about 

the words you choose.

MANAGER’S NOTES 

WITH THE GAFFER CHRIS WILLCOCK 

Good evening and welcome back to Bower Fold 

for tonight’s game. 

With the recent postponements 

due to the weather, we were able 

to get three training sessions in 

over the last week as we look to 

build on our recent run of form and 

continue our climb up the table. 

We arrive into tonight’s game after 

our draw away at Lancaster 10 

days ago. That result continues 

our positive recent results where 

we are unbeaten in six league 

games away from home and have 

been on a nice run of form since 

Boxing Day. 

I think a draw was a fair result at 

Lancaster, we scored a wonderfully 

crafted equaliser through Harry, 

Raul, Ciaran, Theo and Daggers 

combining. 

Whilst the above stats are good, 

we need to continue to improve 

our home form and back up our 

New Year’s win over Liversedge 

by creating a better run of form at 

home. Our away record has been 

solid but it’s at home where we 

need to improve and after the big 

win over Liversedge, I’m hoping 

we can build on that starting today 

against Radcliffe. 

On another positive note, I am 

delighted Matty Carson’s loan 

extension 

for a further 

month is now 

official, however sadly Nathan 

Caine is unavailable, possibly for 

3-4 weeks due to the injury he 

sustained last week during the 

Lancaster game. 

I hope you all enjoyed the win over 

Liversedge, I was pleased to see 

a fantastic number of you here 

supporting the team and I hope 

we can have another good crowd 

tonight.

MATCH REPORT 

FROM LIVERSEDGE 

Celtic propelled themselves out of the bottom four with 

a comprehensive second half performance against fellow 

strugglers Liversedge. 

The opening five minutes saw a crisp 

passing Celtic carving out chances with 

Nathan Caine latching onto a superb low 

cross from Theo Bailey-Jones. It took a 

reaction stop from Jordan Porter to deny 

him. Ciaran Summers got onto the end of 

a confident move, firing inches past the 

post. Just before Caine forced a second 

save from Porter, Jack Carr rounded 

Greg Hall but saw his tight angled shot 

cleared off the line by Matty Carson. 

Carr had another stab fifteen minutes 

in, producing a good stop from Hall, but 

there was nothing Hall could do when 

Carr’s cross evaded everybody to find 

Joseph Walton free and clear to turn 

the cross into the back of the net. Game 

management from visitors left little in 

the way of chances for either side to the 

interval. 

Celtic needed a different game plan for 

the second half, and that came from 

Matty Carson. A free kick on the edge 

of the box gave Carson his chance 

and he took it, curling the perfect shot 

around the wall into the top corner. 

Three minutes later, and he got another 

chance. And he did it again! 

When Jack Hardacre brought down Raul 

Correia in the box, Correia relinquished 

the spot kick to Carson to attempt his hat 

trick. Carson stepped up and almost took 

the back of the net off. 

Celtic made the game safe when a 

terrible pass allowed Raul Correia to go 

one-on-one with Porter, rounding him 

and the defenders coming back to give 

Celtic a three gold cushion. And they 

needed that in the last twenty minutes, 

as a Liversedge threw everything they 

had at Celtic. Nicolas Walker fired wide, 

Alfie Raw’s screamer from forty yards 

required a flying save from Hall and 

finally Walton put the ball through a 

packed defence for Kurt Harris to tap in. 

Three goals proved insurmountable for 

the visitors, lifting Celtic to sixteenth.

MATCH REPORT 

FROM LANCASTER CITY 

Celtic came from behind before the heavens opened to earn a 

point on the road in Lancaster. 

Chris Dagnall’s equaliser from a 

wonderful Theo Bailey-Jones cross 

ensured Celtic returned from The Giant 

Axe with a point. 

After a sluggish start by both teams, 

Lancaster found their feet first. Niall 

Cowperthwaite forced Greg Hall into the 

first stop of the match, testing the Celtic 

keeper. It was a good low stop from Hall 

but impossible to hold. In the scramble 

that followed, Dominic Lawson pushed 

the ball over the line, and though hacked 

clear, it was judged to have crossed the 

line. 

Cowperthwaite had a go from thirty 

yards to try and double their advantage, 

whilst the closest Celtic came in this 

period saw Raul Correia’s venomous 

strike blocked by Andy Teague. 

Celtic got back into the game with an 

inch perfect cross from Bailey-Jones 

after Correia had laid the ball out to 

him. Dagnall arrowed the header past a 

flailing Sam Waller. 

Both sides could have grabbed another 

before the break with a sharp stop 

denying Bailey-Jones’s volley whilst 

Hall had plenty of time to get down and 

smother Dale Whitham’s effort from 

range. 

Bailey-Jones started the second half off 

with a low drive from the edge of the box, 

which may have been going wide, but 

Waller made sure. 

It was Bailey-Jones again as the rain 

lashed down, but Waller was well-placed. 

Heading into the last ten minutes, Eddie 

Ikpakwu beat Greg Hall, but not Matty 

Carson who on the line was able to hack 

the ball away. 

In injury time, substitute Tinashe 

Chakwana got a glorious chance to 

snatch all three points but he headed a 

Harry Benns cross narrowly over the bar.

Tuesday night sees Celtic in Cheshire Senior Cup action 

against Cammell Laird. Cammell Laird are currently 

15th in the Northwest Counties First Division South, two 

divisions below Celtic. Kick-off is 7:45pm and tickets are 

available on the gate or online, costing £5 for all with Under 

16’s entering for free. 

In the league, Cammell Laird have won twice on the road this season, beating Stafford 

Town and Alsager (both 2-1) in October. Since then, they have mainly had home games, 

with only one away game, losing 3-2 at Sandbach. In their last five matches Cammell 

Laird have won two and lost three, their last match seeing them lose 1-0 at home to 

Ashville. 

Their best result so far this season was beating Foley Meir 5-1 at home, whilst their 

worst result saw them lose 5-0 at home to Ellesmere Rangers. 

With seven of their 30 league goals (and three in cups), Kieran Hamm is the danger 

man, though Jay Harvey has weighed in with seven goals this season with four in the 

league. In total, 14 different scorers have found the net for Cammell Laird this season. 

18 league goals were scored in the second half, roughly 50/50. They have scored three 

penalties, though they have gone through two rounds of the FA Vase on penalties 

having drawn 1-1 with both Wythenshawe Amateurs and Retford. 

Celtic have hosted Cammell Laird in the Cheshire Senior Cup before, back in 2016, 

when we won 7-3 with Adam Morning and Josh Heaton getting one each, Danny Wilkins 

getting a brace and Scott Spencer grabbing a hat-trick. Two other meetings were both 

pre-season friendlies in which Celtic won both 3-0, with both games in Birkenhead.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel 

Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from 

an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular 

Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). 

Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he 

was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough 

University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and 

Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an 

athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very 

seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him. 

Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month 

before he died, he had no symptoms! 

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE 

YOUNG (SCD) 

SCD is the leading cause of death in young 

athletes during sport and the majority of deaths 

occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history. 

ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 

5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR. 

Warning signs may include light-headedness, 

fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, 

breathlessness. 

Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and 

healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die 

from previously undiagnosed heart conditions. 

In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all 

young people engaged in organised sport, they 

have reduced the incidence of young sudden 

cardiac death by 89%. 

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been 

set up to raise awareness of SCD and to 

provide funding towards heart screening, 

defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training 

primarily for grass-roots sporting teams. 

Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac 

screening. It is vital that young people are 

identified and treated.

A midfielder, who was a week in and week out 

player over the course of 10 seasons from 

the late 1990’s onwards. Always a firm fans 

favourite, thanks to an ability to get stuck into 

games, having a high level of commitment to 

the cause but above all else then just being 

a big part of the treble success and with a 

major contribution by scoring a hat-trick in the 

Cheshire Senior Cup final against Stockport. 

>⃝● IAN PATTERSON 

Featured during two campaigns of the Football 

Conference glory days from the mid 1990’s. 

Played at centre half. 

>⃝● RICHARD PEACOCK 

Brought in to offer some culture and experience 

from a right-hand sided midfield position. 

Signed ahead of the 2001/2002 campaign, 

the brief one season stay saw Celtic’s second 

foray into the Football Conference. 

>⃝● MARTIN PEARSON 

Backup goalkeeper in the 2007/2008 Football 

Conference North play-off season. Although 

playing very few games in total thanks to 

injury, he became a stand in hero during the 

Southport semi-final penalty shoot out and 

subsequently appeared in the final against 

Barrow. 

>⃝● STEVE PICKFORD 

Another popular player amongst the terraces 

for a never giving up attitude. A midfielder, 

who featured in four seasons from the late 

1990’s to early 2000’s and also played a big 

part in the unprecedented treble campaign, 

being virtually ever present. 

>⃝● COLIN POTTS 

Arrived in the early 2000’s, under the 

management of Dave Miller to offer some right 

wing wizardry. Played for 

the course of two seasons 

in the Northern Premier League. 

>⃝● CRAIG POWELL 

A striker who came in towards the latter end 

of our time spent in the Football Conference 

from the mid 1990’s. He was mainly used as 

a substitute. 

>⃝● MARK POWELL 

Mark appeared over a period of three seasons 

from the mid to late 1990s. He was a versatile 

player and was capable of operating in both 

defence and midfield. 

>⃝● PHIL POWER 

He arrived during the 1992/1993 and the 

clubs first season spent in the Football 

Conference. He was a striker who also played 

in the following campaign. 

>⃝● ERIC PRIEST 

Known as the cleric, being in surname 

deference, Eric signed during the 1991/1992 

Northern Premier League title winning season 

and also stayed on for the following year. He 

was a striker, who mainly operated in the hole 

and was thus able to provide a perfect foil for 

any flick-ons. 

>⃝● NEIL PRINCE 

Neil played for two seasons in the Football 

Conference North, under John Reed in the 

mid 2000’s. He was a right-hand sided 

winger, whose most memorable moment in a 

blue shirt came with scoring a hat-trick during 

a derby day demolition of Hyde. 

>⃝● JOHN RYAN 

Played in two seasons of the Football 

Conference glory days from the mid 1990’s. 

He was brought in to boost the midfield and 

add vast experience.

Statement from the Board 

of Directors 

The general economic climate, resulting in 

lower than anticipated commercial income 

and increases in utility bills and other costs 

has severely affected the club’s cash flow 

situation. 

This has been exacerbated by the loss of 

income from two consecutive Saturday home 

games being postponed in December, which 

has meant that the club has had to seriously 

look to reduce its operating expenditure. 

Clearly, the biggest expense the Club has is 

the playing budget. 

The Board has consequently had to make 

the extremely difficult decision to reduce the 

playing budget by approximately 20%, which 

will result in some players being released 

from the squad. This decision has not been 

made lightly, but the ongoing financial 

stability of the club must be paramount. 

The Board would like to thank Manager 

Chris Willcock for his understanding of this 

decision and for his continued commitment to 

Stalybridge Celtic FC. 

The Board has, in recent weeks, held several 

meetings with the officials of the newly 

re-formed Stalybridge Celtic Supporters 

Association (SCSA), at which discussions 

have been held as to how the association can 

assist the club, both in terms of volunteers 

helping in match-day operations, but also in 

helping the club meet some of it’s financial 

commitments outside of footballing costs. 

The club is planning several fundraisers over 

the next couple of months, and the SCSA will 

be a huge asset in helping to promote those 

events, and help bring funds into the club. 

Both the Board and the SCSA are committed 

to work together in the best interests of 

Stalybridge Celtic FC. 

Support from fans this season has been 

absolutely superb, both at home and away, 

and we hope this will continue and grow, and 

that all fans will help continue to get behind 

OUR club in any way they can. 

Everyone will know that Rob Gorski is seeking 

to sell his shares and find a new majority 

shareholder. Hopefully that new majority 

shareholder is able to invest in the club and 

propel it onwards, as we all want.

Super Matty Carson 

Celtic is thrilled to confirm Matty Carson’s 

loan from Accrington Stanley has been 

extended for a further month. 

The 20-year-old left-back will stay at the club 

for a further month as he looks to build on his 

10 appearances so far, since joining the club 

initially in October. 

Matty has four goals to his name having 

scored a stunning hat-trick in the 4-2 win over 

Liversedge as well as netting in the Cheshire 

Senior Cup fixture vs Warrington Town. He 

assisted former loanee Dylan Moonan as the 

pair made their debut earlier in the season at 

Hurst Cross. 

The club would like to thank Accrington 

Stanley for allowing Matty to continue his loan 

spell at Celtic. 

The extension was officially completed this 

week and will see Matty remain at Bower Fold 

until February 11th. 

Valentines at The Celtic 

Wine Bar and Grill 

We are holding a Valentines Evening on 

Tuesday 14th February with the Celtic Wine 

Bar and Grill. 

Starting at 7pm until late, guests will receive 

a tasty tapas meal for two in addition to a litre 

of sangria to share. 

Fantastic vocalist Paul Eden will be providing 

live entertainment and there will be a wide 

range of drink offers and valentines cocktails 

available on the night.
