THE OFFICIAL STALYBRIDGE CELTIC MATCH DAY PROGRAMME

WELCOME TO BOWER FOLD
FROM DIRECTOR, KEITH SMART
A very warm welcome to all the players, officials and
supporters of our near neighbours, Hyde United. I
hope you’ve all had a safe trip over ‘the hill’, and all
have a trouble-free journey home after the match.
Because of the Easter Holiday deadline, I write these notes before the
full set of fixtures on Saturday, so the league position of both ourselves
and today’s opponents could be very different than they are today
(Wednesday). Depending on results in those games, we may or may not be
in the bottom four, and Hyde may or may not be in a play-off berth. Either
way, both teams have a lot to play for today, for very different reasons as
the season reaches its crucial last phase.
We’ve had a fortnight without a game following last Saturday’s late decision
to postpone our game at Marske, which unfortunately now means a long
trip on a Tuesday night to play what is bound to be a very crucial game. But
it is what it is; we must be prepared and ready for it. As indeed we must be
for ALL the remaining games, where we must pick up as many points as
possible.
In recent weeks we’ve struggled to keep 11 men on the pitch and it’s cost us
dearly. We cannot afford to hand that kind of advantage to our opponents
over the next few weeks, so emotions need to be kept in
check and if we can get ahead, we need to manage the
game and see it out. I’m sure the Gaffer has made this
clear to the lads and we will all keep going until the very
end of the season.
The fans can certainly be the 12th man today. The
support during this challenging season has been
superb. Cheer the lads on to victory!
Enjoy the game.
WIN AT ALL COSTS:
Stuart Vallantine, Monday 10th April 2023
Pride isn’t the only game in town,
This year sees four teams go down,
One of them could be us.
Win At All Costs should be the plan
With the Bier Shed Side the twelfth man.
Two home games to go,
Let’s put on a show,
Whether we attack or park the bus.
Today’s game has another dimension,
A local derby with all the tension
You expect no matter where we are,
Whether chasing
promotion
Or fighting relegation.
Two at home, two on the road
Time to get in turbo mode
To stay in Step Three.
Owt else is Boxing Day at Mossley
Or Hanley in February.
Time for us to show some might
And give the Tigers a fright.
MANAGER’S NOTES
WITH THE GAFFER CHRIS WILLCOCK
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s Tameside derby
fixture at Bower Fold.
We’ve had a quick turn around from Saturday’s game at
Guiseley and we’ve got to be ready to go again today in what is
another important game.
I thought the players worked tirelessly all afternoon on Saturday and
put in a real shift. We had a really good first half and scored a great opening goal and I
thought we defended well and stopped Guiseley from creating anything.
To be honest, I don’t think we were troubled for the full 90 minutes and we’ve conceded
from a free-kick in a central area that we usually deal with. I don’t think we set up quite
right for the free-kick and ultimately we were punished.
For the rest of the game, we didn’t look like conceding but we just lacked that bit of
creativity to go and get ourselves a second goal.
I said after the game that any other weekend in the season, you would be very happy
with a point away at Guiseley but it’s just at this stage of the season and the position
we’re in where we need as many points as we can get.
I thought the goal we scored was really well worked and was pleased with how we dealt
with different situations defensively. It was also a great moment to see Mo play after
having a long time out with injury.
The support from the fans was fantastic again in Guiseley and I know you will all
continue to get behind us for the final four games.
It is appreciated and I hope today we’ll be able to give you something to smile about.
Enjoy the game.
UPDATE FROM THE SECRETARY
WITH PHIL HALL
Good afternoon and welcome to Bower Fold for
today’s vital derby with Hyde United. A warm
welcome to our friends from over the hill.
Today’s game of course has a huge importance at both ends
of the table as Hyde battle to stay in the playoff race and we
battle to stay in the division.
There has been a lot of chatter on social media as to why todays game is kicking off at
1pm and the decision to segregate Hyde fans at the town end of the ground. The truth
is that there have been crowd incidents at each of our last three home games and both
teams have received warnings from the FA this season regarding crowd trouble. Both
clubs have a responsibility to try and ensure that the game goes ahead without trouble
and agreed to the arrangements made. The positioning of the Bier Hut and the SCSA
shop means that we are unable to segregate at the top end.
Unfortunately due to deadlines I’m writing this before Saturday’s trip to Guiseley, but
last Saturday’s late postponement by Marske was hugely disappointing, especially as so
many fans had decided to make a weekend of it.
On the playing front, Macclesfield have agreed to extend Joe O’Shaugnessy’s loan until
the end of the season.
Next Saturday sees us make our first trip to Warrington Rylands followed by our rearranged
fixture with Marske on Tuesday the 18th.
Enjoy the game,
A LOOK AT...
ASHTON UNITED
HYDE United will always be remembered for
the 26-0 FA Cup defeat inflicted by Preston
in 1887. But the club, founded two years
earlier as Hyde FC, were anything but a
collection of hopeful amateurs. They were
an ambitious outfit who wanted to compete
with the best.
The 1887-88 season was actually very
successful and at the end of it Hyde met Newton
Heath (now Manchester United) in a match
described as the unofficial championship of
Manchester.
At the turn of the 20th century, the club won
four league titles. They moved to Ewen Fields
in 1906 after a takeover of Hyde St George’s
which allowed them to replace the Saints in the
Lancashire Combination.
Hyde folded in 1917 because of what was termed
war reaction. However, there were demands for
the club to be re-established and in 1919 it was
reborn as Hyde United.
In the 1920s, Hyde dominated the Manchester
League, winning five championships, which led
to election to the Cheshire County League in
1930.
After the Second World War, Hyde won the
Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time. In 1954
they reached round one of the FA Cup, losing
to a Workington side managed by Bill Shankly.
In the following two seasons the club clinched
back-to-back Cheshire League titles.
Hyde’s nickname, the Tigers, was adopted at
the end of the 1960s when they were founder
members of the Northern Premier League. They
were expected to struggle but fought like tigers
for two seasons to finish seventh and eleventh.
However, the club could not cope financially and
resigned in 1970.
It took ten years for Hyde to re-emerge. In 1981-
82 they won the Cheshire League treble and
returned to the NPL. They faced Burnley in the
First Round of the FA Cup in 1983, and in 1989
made it to the FA Trophy Semi-Final’s.
In 1986, Hyde sold Ewen Fields to Tameside
Council so that a synthetic Baspograss pitch
could be laid. They won
several trophies, faced
Darlington in the First Round
of the FA Cup (1994) and reached two more
Trophy Semi-Final’s.
Grass was reinstated in 1995 but in 2003, only
three years after finishing second in the NPL
Premier Division, Hyde were relegated only to
come back as champions at the first attempt.
They immediately followed up with the NPL title
in 2004-05.
Fortunes were mixed in National League North.
Key backers pulled out and in 2009 the Tigers
were even wound up for a week.
The following year, Hyde secured a deal to allow
Manchester City’s elite development squad to
use Ewen Fields. The money secured the club’s
immediate future but the decision to drop the
United suffix and stop wearing red shirts divided
fans. A poor season followed.
Yet, back in red, the Tigers amazed everyone
in 2011-12. Beginning the campaign with ten
consecutive wins, they won the championship
and promotion to the national division where
they finished 18th and beat clubs like Wrexham,
Luton and Grimsby.
Unfortunately, three consecutive relegations
followed. By 2016 Hyde were in the NPL First
Division North and at their lowest ebb since
1970. Luckily change was on the way.
Hyde FC was reborn as a supporters’ trust
called Hyde United. A state-of-the-art 3G pitch
was laid in partnership with Tameside Council,
and by 2017 they were back in the NPL Premier
Division. In November of the same year, the
Tigers faced Milton Keynes Dons at Ewen Fields
in the FA Cup First Round, in a game shown live
on Match of the Day.
The first full season after the COVID lockdowns,
2021-22, proved turbulent. There were three
managers and times when the club was too
close to the relegation places. Safety was
achieved after the appointment of Nick Spooner
in February and Hyde United are now looking to
the future with confidence.
A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
WITH MICHAEL BRIERLEY
Stalybridge Celtic FC,
together with its home of
Bower Fold, was founded in
1909 by Herbert Rhodes.
The Celtic name does begin to
appear in records from 1906
onwards but crucially appears
to have never been affiliated
with any league and seemingly
played friendly matches only.
From formation and that very
first game, development was
more than a fairly rapid affair
and the success of football
played, via the Lancashire &
Cheshire League, Lancashire
Combination, Central League and
Southern League was immediate,
testament to the level of ambition
that existed.
Following its decision to expand,
the initial dream of election to the
Football League was achieved
and two seasons were spent in
the Third Division North. This
brought more than acceptable
results and a highest-ever
finish in the footballing pyramid,
together with a best-ever
performance in the FA Cup in
front of a record gate of 9,753.
Voluntary resignation, due to
financial concerns and being
the first to ever
do so, saw the
journey start all
over again. The Cheshire County
League was joined before further
pyramid reorganisation saw
progress made through the North
West Counties League to the
Northern Premier League.
Stalybridge Celtic FC and Bower
Fold first entered my life for a
home game against Frickley
Athletic, in the Northern Premier
League, on 2nd March 1991.
My first game was to see a dour
0-0 draw (Hughes, Bennett,
Coathup, Dixon, Aspinall,
Blackman, Booth, Armor,
Diamond, McNally, Leicester).
Entrance £1.40, programmes
50p, old wooden main stand,
popular side, sleepers and
cinders, railway carriage, pie
and peas, hot dogs are all early
memories and all part of this
fan’s history.
When asked to recall a first
game seen, doubtless the
reminiscences can stretch, even
down to the minutest detail,
many years later. From the cost
of admission and matchday
programme, to starting line up
22
A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
WITH MICHAEL BRIERLEY
and final result. All aspects of the
day stand alone but in the wider
scheme of things are part of a
journey, part of history. Those
early and perhaps, in the main,
younger days are surely the
most nostalgic. They provide the
happiest memories in what were
better and simpler times.
It’s the same in all walks of life.
Formula 1 is all about teamwork,
the challenge of man and
machine against rivals in a bid
to be the fastest. A cruise ship
comes under the overall control
of master of the vessel but it
takes many crew from all over the
world to run a smooth operation.
In both cases, or in much the
same way as, however we all
came to watch that very first
match and then, once witnessed,
the magic of the blue that can
captivate you for life. All will have
a personal favourite race, trip,
driver, player, match, or season
that they remember best and
each one is, of course, special
but in the context of history. All
equally as important as each
other.
many happy
memories. For
me, it is those
first and successful two years
in the Northern Premier League,
the runners up and title winning
season. Followed by six glorious
years spent in the Football
Conference all complemented
by long and good FA Cup or
Trophy runs, together with other
trophies won and of course, the
unprecedented and unforgettable
treble season of Northern
Premier League, Cheshire Senior
and Presidents Cup.
It is the many memories of
individual games, players,
outstanding results and grounds
visited which are remembered
with great and most fondness.
Until we reach the chequered
flag, or our next destination,
then whilst the ultimate goal
is all about the balancing of
success with sustainability,
both on and off the pitch at all
times, it is those individuals and
occasions that should always be
remembered.
The intervening years, since
that Frickley game, have given
Now, it’d be rude of us not to go back to that 7-1 victory against Hyde back in 2015 wouldn’t
it? A great day for the Celts, and while we’d be happy to take just three points today, there’s
UPDATE
SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
Happy Easter from the SCSA
The SCSA would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and hope that everyone is
enjoying the long weekend - hopefully off the back of three points on Saturday.
Over the month of March we ran an Easter Egg collection to be donated to Barty’s Food
Bank. We’d like to thank everyone who contributed. We were able to pass on a total of
62 eggs, and it will have made a real difference.
We hope to do more in conjunction with Barty’s over the coming months and next
season and try to make a difference not just at the club but in the wider community.
Making Friends in the North East
The Celts would have been well supported last
weekend in Marske had the game gone ahead,
but it wasn’t to be. After a few sore heads
tried to come to terms with the postponement,
a plan was hatched to lend our support to
Guisborough Town and the strong contingent
watched, and sang, on as the Northern League
Division One side drew 2-2 with Heaton
Stannington.
We had Karl on the drums and songs aplenty,
welcomed with open arms by the locals. A friendship has certainly been formed, and
we hope to see them again soon!
End of Season Awards
It’s not long to go until the end of the season now, and we’re delighted to
announce we’ll be handing out an SCSA Player of the Season at the End of Season
Awards on Friday 28 April. Tickets can be bought through the club, and we’ll be in
touch via email on how you can cast your vote.
It promises to be a great night, and an occasion to all come together after a season that
has had plenty of ups and downs.
New T-Shirts in the Shop
The merch continues to flow into the shop and we have a new range of t-shirts
available ahead of today’s game.
Alongside that, we have a range of other
shirts and accessories, as well as soft
drinks and snacks.
You can become an SCSA member by
visiting the SCSA Shop or by filling
The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel
Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from
an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular
Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).
Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he
was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough
University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and
Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an
athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very
seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him.
Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month
before he died, he had no symptoms!
SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE
YOUNG (SCD)
SCD is the leading cause of death in young
athletes during sport and the majority of deaths
occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history.
ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to
5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR.
Warning signs may include light-headedness,
fainting, palpitations, swollen legs,
breathlessness.
Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and
healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die
from previously undiagnosed heart conditions.
In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all
young people engaged in organised sport, they
have reduced the incidence of young sudden
cardiac death by 89%.
The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been
set up to raise awareness of SCD and to
provide funding towards heart screening,
defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training
primarily for grass-roots sporting teams.
Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac
screening. It is vital that young people are
identified and treated.
INSIDE THE DRESSING ROOM...
WITH CHRIS DAGNALL
The best compliment you could give Chris Dagnall is that in those dying
moments against Belper Town a man down, scoreline all-square, and
those three points vital, if the ball was going to fall to anyone in the box
you’d want it to be the cool, calm and composed head of Daggers.
Of the Celtic dressing room at present, there are few that have had as intriguing
career as the 36-year-old Liverpudlian, playing in India, Scotland and a number
of teams in the Football League.
That experience has proven instrumental in our side, with the steady heads of
him and his mate Tom Miller leading the team through both the good times and
bad.
With it still all to play for, we caught up with Daggers to talk about his career and what lies ahead over the last
few weeks of the season…
Team You Support: Liverpool
Favourite Food: Sushi
Best Player Played With: John McGinn
Best Player Played Against: Rio Ferdinand
Dream Holiday: Dubai
Favourite TV Show: Suits
Hi Chris. Firstly, how are you? A few weeks to go now, fired
up and ready to go?
I’m all good, just looking forward to the last five games. Let’s
hope we can stay up!
You’ve had a long career with plenty of action at both ends
of the table. It’s a big final run in now, will you be looking to
use those experiences to help the younger lads through it?
Of course yes, I’ve been in situations where it’s gone down to
the last minute of the final game to stay up, and as long as the
younger lads don’t give up and just go out there and give it a
good go each game, that’s all that can be asked.
There’s a bit of a Stalybridge Celtic connection earlier in your
career in which former Connor Jennings moves to Scunthorpe
a few days before you made the step up to Barnsley. Was he
effectively brought in as your replacement?
I’d imagine he was brought in as my replacement but I can’t
remember that far back! Connor is a great lad. We played
together at Tranmere a few years ago as well.
10 years on you join us. How did your move to Stalybridge
come around?
Tommy Miller just kept constantly nagging me to join. So when
I decided to leave Hanley, I thought I would just shut him up!
We’ve got to talk about your time in India. How did you find
yourself going to play there, and what was life like for those
few months?
India was probably the biggest and best risk I took in my career.
Peter Taylor was our manager and I knew him from playing
against his teams many times over the years. He just asked if
I fancied it, but to go out there into the unknown and play in
front of 65,000 fans each week is an experience I’ll never forget!
Not long after you were part of a huge moment in Hibs’
history. Even as a neutral, watching the Sunshine on Leith
clip at Hampden is spine-tingling. That must have been quite
a moment to soak up?
It was absolutely unbelievable. The whole weekend was a party
from start to finish. Seeing the fans singing Sunshine on Leith
after each game during that cup run was unreal and then to win
the Scottish Cup like that just capped it all off!
Moving on to this season, you bagged an important goal on
Boxing Day against Hyde. Your favourite of the season? There
are a few crackers to choose from!
It was a good goal on Boxing Day but my favourite of the season
was my last-minute winner against Belper. I just don’t think you
can beat the feeling of scoring a winner so late.
Finally, there have been plenty of hurdles to overcome this
season, but where would staying in this league rank in your
long list of achievements?
Firstly, we shouldn’t fighting for survival. It’s as simple as that.
We should be top half in the league, but like you said, the club
has had its ups and downs this season and that’s shown on
the pitch. It’s still in our hands and we just need to not shoot
ourselves in the foot and most of all…stick together!
FROM THE ARCHIVES
TUESDAY APRIL 10, 2018
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 6-1 BARNTON
Cheshire Senior Cup
Jake Charles found his form as
Barnton came to Bower Fold after
losing to Stockport County in
the previous round, but getting
reinstated after Stockport fielded an
ineligible player.
Despite the gulf in the leagues between
the two, it took Celtic going behind to get
going. Oli Roberts went close early doors,
but not as close as James McShane
who’s shot was only parried as far as
Ryan Malone. Malone’s shot smashed
against the bar, which should have been
a wakeup call. Connor Hughes however
fired narrowly wide and Tom Brown’s
effort from outside the box was straight
at Callum Shuttlewood in the Barnton
goals.
Barnton deservedly opened the scoring
half way into the first half, Owen Dursley at
the back post to nod home unchallenged
a free kick.
That seemed to do the trick, and though
it took a great stop to deny Steve
Warburton, Celtic looked more in control
of the match. A superb cross from Alex
Honeyball found Connor Hughes at the
corner of the box and he unleashed a
curling shot that gave Shuttlewood no
chance. There was even time before the
interval for Tom Brown’s thirty yard effort
to strike the woodwork.
The second half saw Jake Charles start
by bringing down Hughes’s lifted ball and
smashing home Celtic’s second giving
them a lead they would never relinquish.
Warburton almost got the visitors back
into the game, but was denied by Aidan
Winterbottom’s excellent stop low to
the corner. When Winterbottom was
beaten, Luke Ashworth was there to hack
Malone’s ball almost off the line. With the
visitors looking for an equaliser, Celtic
carved out huge chances at the other end.
Honeyball’s thirty yard rocket required an
outstanding save from Shuttlewood, and
Hughes’s curling effort had to be tipped
over the bar.
Ashworth kept the corner alive, heading
Hughes’s ball back into the mix, and
Charles nodded in his second and Celtic’s
third, killing off any chance Barnton had
of getting back into the game.
Barely had the game restarted and
Connor Hughes left the fullback for dead
and whipped in a low cross that Jake
Charles tapped home from a yard out to
get his hat-trick!
Charles wasn’t finished. As stoppage
time approached, Brice Pouamon nodded
down Hughes’s cross and Charles was
there for his fourth and Celtic’s fifth.
To really emphasise the gulf between the
two teams, Jake Charles added a sixth
in stoppage time with an excellent goal.
Teed up by Pouamon, Charles curled
a shot with the outside of his boot past
Shuttlewood’s stretched fingers to finish
the game in style.
