Looking Ahead to 2023: Cyber Trends to
Watch
By Gary Barlet, Federal CTO, Illumio
Cybersecurity dominated headlines throughout 2022. As cyber threats became more frequent and
sophisticated, we saw a variety of cybersecurity guidance released to help government agencies as they
worked to build stronger cyber resilience strategies. For example, the Office of Management and Budget
(OMB) and the Department of Defense (DoD) both released Zero Trust strategies in 2022, solidifying
Zero Trust as a priority area for all agencies. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency
(CISA) followed suit with guidance aimed at improving cybersecurity for critical infrastructure sectors, K-
12 schools, and healthcare organizations.
Moving into 2023, agencies will remain focused on bolstering cybersecurity. But to do that successfully,
agency leaders must not only efficiently leverage the tools and technologies at their disposal, but also
strategize to keep pace with adversaries who are becoming increasingly sophisticated and resourceful.
Let’s break down several key trends that will make an impact in federal cybersecurity in 2023 and beyond.
