The Top Secrets of CISOs<br />

In the late ‘90s, web designers were a hot commodity. Some companies were even putting<br />

advertisements in print newspapers offering to pay $200,000 <strong>for</strong> someone with HTML and web design<br />

skills. Today, the same issue persists with cybersecurity (though our methods <strong>for</strong> reaching talent have<br />

changed). Un<strong>for</strong>tunately, many organizations combine the role of CISO and CIO, which makes it all the<br />

more challenging to prioritize cybersecurity. With more than 25 years of hands-on experience in all<br />

aspects of hardware and software development, I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to be a successful<br />

CISO. As cybersecurity continues to evolve, I’d like to share the three secrets that set top CISOs apart.<br />

1. Strong cybersecurity starts with people<br />

It’s difficult not just to identify and attract cybersecurity talent, but to retain it. Just like with web designers<br />

at the height of the dot-com boom in the ‘90s, good talent is expensive, and the cybersecurity industry<br />
