Current Problem15European Super LeagueOn April 18th, 2021, the announcement of a breakaway European SuperLeague (ESL), consisting of 12 of Europe’s biggest football clubs, changed thedynamics of football forever.Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and TottenhamHotspur were the British clubs involved, dubbed the ‘Big Six’ by the media.It followed prior plans such as ‘Project Big Picture,’ which are ultimately aboutsecuring each club’s status in an elite tier without fear of relegation or promotionto upset their cartel.The elimination of league movement was a major factor in fans’ strong opposition,as these plans shattered the traditional ideals of the British football pyramid.Many people believe that the Premier League is the best league in the world, andthat the football pyramid in the UK is crucial to its success. Any club at any levelof the pyramid can dream of reaching the top. There have been numerous successstories of clubs that have risen through the football league ranks to take theirplace at the top table. The USA’s system makes this impossible, as promotion andrelegation do not take place, and the league suffers as a result.The USA is particularly relevant in this case as three of the Premier League clubsinvolved in the ESL (Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal) have Americanowners. These owners believed the ESL could offer their clubs more financial securityand a USA style of permanent league membership. It would have removedtheir fears of potential relegation or the pressures of having to qualify for Europeancompetitions each season for better financial reward.However, this goes against the ideals of the British football pyramid as this wouldbe exclusivity for the richest clubs in Europe and not a position awarded throughany earned means. The final league standings of the 2020/21 Premier Leagueseason demonstrated this, with Leicester City and West Ham United, two unfashionableclubs, finishing 5th and 6th, respectively. Tottenham and Arsenal finished7th and 8th, respectively, with Arsenal failing to qualify for any European competition.Despite this, the proposals would have allowed them to join the eliteEuropean competitions ahead of the higher-placed clubs.The playing field is not level.
