Good afternoon, Reds. 

Welcome to Oakwell for today’s Sky Bet League One encounter against 

Derby County. 

We come into this one off the back of a great result at Cheltenham 

Town last Saturday. I was particularly pleased with our professionalism 

and ruthlessness to take the chances we did, and even more pleased to 

keep it tight at the other end. 

It was always going to be a nice occasion for Davvers and I to return to 

somewhere we’ve both called home at some point, but as I said before 

the game, as soon as the whistle blew my focus was 100% on beating 

Cheltenham. 

My best wishes go to Nicky Cadden and his partner after the birth of his 

baby boy in the week. That’s why Cadds was missing from the squad 

and I thought Ziyad Larkeche was excellent when he came in, especially 

at such short notice. It’s testament to his standards and character, 

something we’re very aware of as a coaching staff. 

We got the sad news about our colleague, Beth Sefton on Friday 

afternoon as we were travelling down to Gloucestershire. I’ve only been 

here since the summer, but in that time I’ve learned how important 

Beth is here and to the supporters. She’s worked at Oakwell for 20 

years, and really epitomises this town and Club. It was lovely to hear the 

supporters chanting her name in the terraces last week and seeing all 

the well-wishing messages on social media. Everyone here at the Club 

wishes Beth and her family strength and our best wishes during this 

difficult time. 

Today’s game is also our Barnsley Hospice takeover day. Throughout the 

season, as a team we’ve had the pleasure of learning more and more 

about the fantastic work the Hospice does for the people of Barnsley. 

We saw first-hand the positive impact of their work during our visits 

towards the back end of last year, and I hope today’s game continues to 

raise awareness for a brilliant Barnsley institution. 

The last time we were here was another memorable occasion for me 

and the team. The atmosphere was the best I’ve heard here since I took 

over. It’s clear that it helped the team – going down to 10 men so early 

on is very difficult psychologically, but you drove the team over the line, 

and they responded with a battling, gritty performance. 

I know today is Scarf Day, so I hope we create a real spectacle when 

we emerge from the tunnel and get behind the lads for what is a huge 

game. Every fixture now until the end of the season is big, so we need 

you with us every step of the way. I have no doubt you will be.

Welcome back, Reds. 

I want to start today’s notes by thanking all of you for your terrific 

support in recent weeks. Whether we’re referring to Cambridge United 

last time out here, where I felt your backing helped the team overcome 

adversity, or the support on Valentine’s Night at Port Vale as we chalked 

up another win, or the outstanding efforts last weekend against 

Cheltenham Town – you’ve got right behind the players and we’ve put 

another three wins together. 

It’s an incredible run that we’re on, but such is the task ahead of us, 

we’ve barely moved in the league table. The top six or seven seem to 

keep churning out the results. We’re in amongst it. This afternoon we 

take on the club directly above us in Derby County. A huge club who are 

just one point better off going into this one. We have to take real pride 

from that. And with your continued support, we have the capacity to 

make it six wins from seven. 

It’s Scarf Day at Oakwell. Raise them high and proudly. Show the players 

you’re right behind them. 

I want to thank my staff ahead of today’s game. It has been a 

tough week. As I’m sure the fanbase are aware, last week, one of 

our colleagues, Beth Sefton was rushed to hospital and underwent 

successful life-saving surgery. She remains in good hands and we all 

hope for a positive outcome. 

The staff here – much like our fans – love Beth dearly and I can’t thank 

them enough for how they’ve come together through what has been an 

agonising time for all at Oakwell. 

We remain optimistic. We look forward with hope and in positive spirit. 

On that, our dialogue with Barnsley Council remains solid. We hope 

that we have further news on that in the near future. Our home here 

at Oakwell is important. I’ve said this continually and I feel like we’re 

edging closer to getting some big, positive news on that very soon!

It’s fair to say that we enjoyed a 

rather productive January transfer 

window with seven new faces 

arriving at Oakwell, the last of whom 

was Jon Russell, who joined in the 

closing stages of deadline day. 

The final piece of Michael Duff’s 

jigsaw. 

A powerful midfielder, Jon made the 

switch from West to South Yorkshire, 

departing Sky Bet Championship 

strugglers Huddersfield Town in 

favour of a crack at promotion from 

League One with the Reds. 

Whether that’s as one of the top two, 

which admittedly seems like a stern 

challenge given the current points 

gap – although this is football, and 

anything can happen in this crazy 

game – or via the lottery of the playoffs, 

our number three is more than 

ready for the challenge. 

“We don’t rule anything out,” 

asserted Jon. “The best thing for us 

to do is look at automatic because we 

want to win every game. We look to 

win; we don’t look to draw or lose. 

“We have to look at the goal of getting 

automatic, but if we don’t, then playoffs 

is fine. But our goal is to always 

win games and to keep winning.” 

If results are anything to go by, that 

mentality has certainly rubbed off 

on the squad with five wins from 

our last six outings and goals flying 

in from all angles – particularly the 

centre of the park. 

Luca Connell, Herbie Kane and Adam 

Phillips have all been on target 

in the last couple of games, with 

midfielders seemingly finding that 

Midas touch at a crucial stage of the 

season. 

Competition for places is fierce, and 

with Josh Benson set to return from 

injury sooner rather than later, the 

depth within the Reds’ squad will be 

more than a match for any team in 

this division. 

“Maybe me coming in has helped 

everyone else!” laughed Jon. “It’s all 

friendly competition, so if you’ve got 

someone behind you, you want to 

kick on and push on. 

“Everyone has got a goal and is 

trying to get to where they need to 

be, and no one should be angry with 

that. Everyone wants to get into 

the Championship, and we’re all a 

team, so we need to keep pushing 

everyone on and get the best out of 

our teammates.” 

Our trip to Oxford United at the start 

of February came too soon for the 

22-year-old to make his Barnsley 

debut, but he linked up with the 

squad ahead of the clash with 

Portsmouth as we trained at the 

University of Southampton. 

Those couple of days with his new 

teammates allowed Jon to acclimatise 

to a new environment, and it’s safe to 

say that he’s fitted right in with the 

group dynamics here at Oakwell. 

“I travelled down, and the day after 

we trained, so that was good to meet 

everyone and see how everyone 

plays,” reflected the midfielder. “It 

was always going to be different to 

what I’m used to, so it was good to 

have those days to see how things 

worked. 

“I felt like, as the week went on, I 

understood how they did things, so it 

was a big help and I didn’t go straight 

into it blind, and they’ve helped me 

settle in. 

“The lads made it very easy for me, to 

be honest. They’re all nice and they’re 

all close; we all do things together – 

no one is left out of anything. They’ve 

helped me settle in and I’ve looked at 

how they go about themselves, and 

everything is very professional.” 

His first Reds appearance came at 

Fratton Park, entering the fray as a 

late substitute as we trailed to Colby 

Bishop’s goal four minutes after the 

break. 

Having seen a Devante Cole effort 

ruled out and brought back for a freekick, 

it looked as though it would be 

one of those days for Duff’s side, but 

we showed resilience and togetherness 

to claim a richly deserved point through 

Liam Kitching’s dramatic equaliser. 

“I feel like the squad is a very strong 

squad; their heads don’t go down no 

matter what, and they always try and 

work their hardest,” discussed Jon. 

“We got a decent result, and I feel 

like away from home against a good 

team, it’s a very good point to get.” 

That character came to the fore in 

our next outing as Cambridge United 

visited Oakwell when, despite taking 

an early lead, goal scorer Max Watters 

was shown a straight red card shortly 

before half-time.

EVERYONE WANTS 

TO GET INTO THE 

CHAMPIONSHIP… 

Naturally, there were flashbacks to 

the clash against Bolton Wanderers 

at the start of January, but there was 

a tactical switch to four at the back 

with Jon also being introduced at the 

interval, and we regained control of 

the contest before sealing all three 

points through Jordan Williams’ 

superb volley. 

“It was that spirit of not giving 

up,” insisted the Chelsea academy 

graduate. “When we went down to 

10 men, everyone was thinking that 

we need to work harder, and we had 

the organisation and knew what we 

were all doing. 

“We had our structure, and I think 

that helped us win the game and, 

obviously, our character helped us to 

win the game.” 

Victories on the road at Port Vale and 

Cheltenham Town have followed, 

with seven goals plundered in those 

two outings – and six different 

scorers registered. 

Perhaps what has been most 

impressive about this recent run of 

form, however, is how efficient the 

Reds are with and without the ball, 

almost allowing the opposition to 

dictate possession before clinically 

taking our chances when they come 

along. 

“You don’t win games without 

shooting or attacking,” said Jon. 

“The gaffer has made it clear to us 

that we need to score, be organised 

defensively and, counter and press 

with intensity. The gaffer really points 

that out to us and, you can see with 

the form we’re in that we’re doing it.” 

This afternoon’s opponents, 

Derby County, are in decent form 

themselves and come into this 

encounter on the back of a 2-0 

win against Charlton Athletic last 

weekend. 

The Rams sit one place and one 

point above us in the table, and 

victory could potentially see us 

climb to fourth depending on results 

elsewhere in League One. 

It’s certainly a big fixture, not just in 

terms of the race for promotion, but 

for the psychological effect a positive 

or negative result could have on 

either team. 

A chance to lay down a marker. 

“The way we do things, we’re not a 

lower league club, and Derby were 

in the Championship for however 

many years, so it’s going to be a good 

competition,” discussed Jon. 

“I reckon we probably do things 

similar, and our standard is similar, 

so it’ll be an interesting game and a 

good one, too. 

“We’re all confident; we’ve got a good 

mentality about us. We know that 

Derby is going to be a hard game, but 

I don’t think that it’s going to worry 

us. As a team, we have belief in one 

another and know we’ve got each 

other’s backs, so we’re just going to 

give it our all. 

“In training, we’re at is as well. We 

know what’s coming and know how 

we’ve got to break them down and 

play. So, we’re confident and positive 

about the game.” 

With just short of 5,000 travelling 

supporters in the away end, it’s up to 

the Reds faithful to more than match 

that energy and make a cauldron of 

noise on Scarf Day. 

The players thrive off an 

atmosphere, and you can make a 

huge difference when the two sides 

take to the pitch. 

“It’s massive,” admitted Jon. “The last 

game I played at home, the crowd 

were incredible, and I was watching 

the crowd from the bench, and they 

were so loud. 

“When I came on, you could really 

feel it with the crowd behind you, so 

this weekend Derby can’t out-sing 

us – our fans have got to be at it as 

well. 

“But, we’re positive; that’s got to be 

the case and then it’s going to help us 

as a team to get our momentum and 

the win.”

Barnsley Hospice 

Mark's Story 

Mark Winter, 62, has attended 

the Barnsley Hospice support and 

wellbeing service for over four 

years. Over these years, Mark’s 

perception of hospice care has 

changed, and he is now sharing his 

story to help others. 

Mark said, “I initially heard about the 

Hospice from a GP when I was first 

diagnosed with cancer. 

“Like thousands of others, I heard 

the word hospice and thought ‘oh 

dear’. I was totally ignorant to what 

the Hospice did and assumed a 

referral meant that my time was up. 

“A couple of years later, I decided to 

accept the invite, and I visited the 

Hospice for the first time. I was a bit 

apprehensive initially, but after four 

years, I have never looked back.” 

Mark first attended the Hospice’s 

Day Therapy services, which 

was replaced with a support and 

wellbeing service, the Orangery, 

after the COVID-19 lockdown. 

“When the team called to tell me 

about the Orangery, I signed up for 

all programmes straight away. I 

enjoy coming every week, as I learn 

so much from the other people who 

attend and the staff. 

“I tell my friends and family that 

I look forward to coming to the

Hospice, and some don’t understand 

it, but when I’m here, I feel more 

relaxed than I have ever been. 

“I’m a typical Barnsley man, and I 

never thought I’d be one for using 

relaxation techniques, but the 

Hospice has taught me so many 

ways to cope with my anxiety that I 

use all the time at home. 

“I think what stands out for me at 

the Hospice is the staff. They are 

absolutely superb. From the moment 

I walk into the room, I feel at ease. 

Everything they do feels completely 

tailored to me, which is just lovely. 

“I haven’t raised the white flag, 

but in the moments where I am 

struggling, the team are right there 

to pick me up and support me. I often 

don’t even need to say anything, and 

the team just knows when I need 

that extra phone call or a chat. I don’t 

have enough words to describe how 

great they are!” 

In November 2022, Mark was 

part of the Club’s Together Red 

campaign, during which the Hospice 

was announced as the first charity 

front of shirt sponsor. As a lifelong 

fan of the Reds, he wants to thank 

the Club and fans for their ongoing 

support. 

“The first time I went to Oakwell was 

in 1980, and I’ve followed the Club 

ever since. It’s hard to find the words 

to thank everyone at Barnsley FC 

enough for the way they support a 

charity that means so much to me. 

“I hope all the fans who bought a 

shirt or have put money in a bucket 

today know what an impact it has 

on people like me. Many of us know 

someone who has been supported 

by the Hospice or will be in the

A midfielder in his playing days, Warne 

began his career on the non-league circuit 

with local side Great Yarmouth Town 

before moving to Diss Town, with whom he 

won the FA Vase at Wembley in 1994. 

After a stint with Norfolk-based outfit 

Wroxham, he got his break in professional 

football when Wigan Athletic, fresh from 

their promotion as champions to Division 

Two, took him to Springfield Park. 

Warne spent 18 months with the Latics 

before dropping down to the fourth tier of 

English football to begin his first spell with 

Rotherham United, winning back-to-back 

promotions to Division One in 2000 and 

2001. 

In 2005, following a loan spell at Mansfield 

Town, the midfielder joined Oldham 

Athletic and, after two years in Greater 

Manchester, moved to Somerset with 

Yeovil Town. 

He re-joined Rotherham ahead of their 

2009/10 campaign in League Two before 

retiring in 2012. 

The 49-year-old began his coaching career 

shortly after hanging his boots up and 

eventually had his first managerial position 

with the Millers in 2016 as caretaker when 

Kenny Jackett resigned. 

In 2018, Warne steered Rotherham to 

promotion from League One via the 

play-offs – beating Shrewsbury Town 

after extra-time at Wembley. He has 

twice guided the South Yorkshire side to 

automatic promotion from the third tier, 

too, first in 2020 before repeating the trick 

last season. 

He was appointed as Head Coach at Pride 

Park in September 2022 following the 

departure of Liam Rosenior and arrives 

at Oakwell with the Rams in a healthy 

position in the table.

I thought we played really well; we should have taken more 

chances. I thought in the first half it broke down just on the 

final pass, but apart from that I thought we were pretty 

scintillating. I’m really proud of the lads how well they done.

DERBY COUNTY 

1969/70 

Derby County made a thrilling 

return to the top-flight after 16 

years in 1969/70. Brian Clough’s 

side began with a 0-0 draw 

at home to Burnley and five 

successive wins in September 

culminated in a memorable 5-0 

victory over Spurs watched by 

a record 41,826 crowd at the 

Baseball Ground. The Rams were 

the last team in the First Division to 

taste defeat and beat Manchester 

United 2-0, then Liverpool 4-0. 

They also reached the fifth round 

of both major Cup competitions. 

Terry Hennessey arrived from 

Nottingham Forest in February and 

Derby finished fourth in the topflight 

after remaining undefeated 

in their last 12 matches. 

1971/72 

Brian Clough guided Derby County 

to the League Championship in 

1971/72. Captain Dave Mackay left 

to become Swindon’s player-boss 

and the Rams started with a 2-2 

draw at home to Manchester United, 

remaining unbeaten for 12 First 

Division games until losing 1-0 at 

Old Trafford. They maintained their 

title challenge with 12 successive 

home wins, culminating in an 

important 2-0 victory over rivals 

Leeds United. Recovering from a 

shock 1-0 defeat by Newcastle, they 

triumphed 4-0 at Sheffield United 

and clinched the title with a 1-0 

win at home to rivals Liverpool. The 

Rams also beat Airdrie 2-1 in the 

Texaco Cup final. 

1972/73 

Derby County reached the 

European Cup semi-finals in 

1972/73. David Nish arrived from 

Leicester for a British record fee 

at the start of the season and 

European soccer came to the 

Baseball Ground for the first time 

in September when the Rams 

defeated Zeljeznicar 2-0, then 

triumphed 2-1 in the second-leg. 

Derby then beat Benfica 3-0 and 

Spartak Trnava 2-1 in the European 

Cup before losing 3-1 to Juventus 

in the semi-finals. Brian Clough’s 

side also reached the FA Cup sixth 

round but away form let them 

down badly in the First Division 

and the highlight was a 5-0 win at 

home to Arsenal as they finished in 

seventh place. 

1974/75 

Dave Mackay managed Derby 

County to their second League 

Championship success in four 

seasons in 1974/75. New signing 

Francis Lee made his debut as the 

Rams kicked off with a 0-0 draw at 

Everton, with Peter Daniel replacing 

the injured Roy McFarland in the 

heart of defence. They lost just two 

of their first 13 First Division games 

and went fifth after Kevin Hector 

grabbed a hat-trick in the 5-2 

win at home to QPR in November. 

The Rams beat Servette 6-2 and 

Atletico Madrid on penalties before 

losing 5-4 to Velez in the UEFA Cup 

third round. They clinched the title 

after remaining unbeaten in their 

last nine matches. 

1986/87 

Bobby Davison netted 19 goals 

as Derby County won the Second 

Division title in 1986/87. The Rams 

had won promotion under Arthur Cox 

the previous season and new signings 

Steve Cross, Mike Forsyth, Phil Gee, 

Mark Lillis and Mel Sage made their 

debuts as Derby kicked off with a 1-0 

defeat by Oldham. It proved to be 

their sole home defeat of the season 

and captain Rob Hinchmarch’s return 

from injury sparked a run of ten wins 

in 13 games that catapulted them to 

the top by New Year. Nigel Callaghan 

arrived in February and they 

remained unbeaten in 13 matches, 

clinching the title with a 4-2 victory 

over Plymouth. 

Derby County, 2007 Championship 

play-off winners 

1995/96 

Derby County won promotion to the 

Premier League under new manager 

Jim Smith in 1995/96. The Rams 

won only two of their opening ten 

League games but results improved 

after Russell Hoult took over in goal, 

Dean Yates returned to the heart 

of defence and Igor Stimac arrived 

from Hadjuk Split. They soared 

to the top of the table with ten 

wins in 11 matches and remained 

in pole position for three months, 

strengthened by the signing of Chris 

Powell from Southend in January. 

Sunderland displaced them at 

the top during the closing weeks 

but Derby beat Tranmere 6-2 and 

finished runners-up with a 2-1 win 

over Crystal Palace. 

2006/07 

Derby County regained Premier 

League status after five years’ 

absence in 2006/07. The Rams won 

just one of their first six matches 

under new manager Billy Davies but 

soared to the top of the Championship 

by mid-January, winning all except 

three in a thrilling run of 17 games. 

They hammered Colchester 5-1 and 

were still top at the end of March 

but finished third after winning only 

two of their last six matches. Steve 

Howard was top scorer with 16 goals. 

Derby beat Southampton on penalties 

after a 4-4 draw in the play-off semifinals, 

then Stephen Pearson’s goal 

clinched a 1-0 victory over West Brom 

in the Wembley final.

Open from 1:30pm*, enjoy your surroundings and get 

all the latest scores and updates on our flat-screen 

TVs in the bar. Furthermore, supporters can enjoy 

hot food and refreshments whilst soaking up the 

pre-match atmosphere ahead of kick-off. The bar 

will then remain open during the match and an hour 

after the full-time whistle. 

Please note, that there is no age restriction for 

entry to the bar, but you must be aged 18 or over to 

purchase alcohol.

digital ticket to a member of the staff on the door and

A message from the 

safety officer 

I am pleased to report that over the last few weeks we have seen 

a decrease in poor behaviour at home and away matches. The 

work on this continues and whilst the number of incidents have 

reduced, they haven’t been completely eradicated and so follow 

up work has been progressing from the away fixtures at Bolton 

Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town. 

I’d like to ask all supporters to continue to report any suspicious 

incidents and make us aware of anything that doesn’t look 

right. It is always easier for us to deal with these reports at the 

time rather than a few days later as we have a better chance of 

identifying the person(s) involved. There have been two crimes 

reported to us this season where we could have taken more proactive 

action, but because the reports came in a few days after 

the match, it has made it incredibly difficult to make positive 

identifications. 

The National Counter Terrorism Threat Level is currently 

SUBSTANTIAL which means an attack is likely across the UK 

although there is no known threat to Oakwell. Please assist us 

in keeping everyone safe by reporting any unusual behaviour to 

a steward no matter how insignificant you think it may be. The 

likelihood is that there will be a justified reason, but we welcome 

as much information as possible. 

For home fixtures you can report any incident to a steward, or 

you can do it anonymously by texting ‘ALERT’ to 60777, stating 

what you witnessed followed by the row, seat number, stand and 

general description of the person involved.
