A Changing of the Guard... 

Summertime, and the Netherlands is 

in the middle of a heat wave. Being from 

Colorado originally and having lived 14 years 

in California, I finally feel like we have had a 

proper summer this year! Of course, nearly 

every Dutch client I have asked about the 

weather has only one word to say; “vreselijk”, 

in other words ‘dreadful, just terrible!’ 

It has been a busy summer both here and 

in the IVAS office. We have the program for 

our 32nd Annual Congress completed and the 

Proceedings are almost to the printer. We have 

over 200 people coming to the Congress and 

over 15 exhibitors showing us what they have 

to offer. If you have been waiting till the last 

minute to register to see if anyone you knew 

was going to be there, chances are yes, and you 

won’t want to miss out on all the fun. Inside the 

newsletter you will find more information about 

the Congress and if you still have questions, 

check the website with a full version of the 

Congress brochure that can be downloaded 

and printed, just in case you lost the copy sent 

to you. If you still have questions, Vikki is 

happy to take any phone calls and answer any 

remaining questions. 

This will be my last letter to the membership 

as President of IVAS as my “reign” ends August 

24th at the Annual General Meeting in Natick. 

At that point my dear friend Kevin May takes 

over. I have seen IVAS grow over the past two 

years and we are on track to continue to grow 

through our membership and through new 

courses that will be offered in some countries 

for the first time. This cannot be done without 

the help of many people. There is a saying 

in the United States that “many hands make 

small work”. There are too many of you to

thank here by name, but, to all of you from 

whom I have asked for help over the past few 

years, my heartfelt thanks. I know all of us 

have time commitments for our work and our 

family; anything extra that is done comes from 

time you would have for yourself. Some of you 

have taken on pretty big responsibilities at my 

request and I truly appreciate the dedication 

you have to IVAS and your professionalism in 

doing a job well. Most of all I need to thank my 

dear Sikke. He has been patient with me and 

the time and effort I have put into IVAS, has 

been my sounding board and has supported me 

through the past four years. 

I won’t be going too far away as Pastpresident; 

this may come as a relief for some 

and not so much a relief for others, but there is 

still a lot of work to be done as this organization 

continues to grow and change according to 

the needs of our members and the needs of 

veterinary acupuncture, both locally and 

globally. In closing, I have to say that it has been 

a pleasure to serve for such an organization of 

people. I have many friends and acquaintances 

around the world and this all through IVAS. I 

will see some of you at the Congresses, some at 

other regional meetings and the rest along the 

road we travel. 

For now, I need to go play with the foals; 

some people would call it training, but really, 

it’s just plain fun!

CASE REPORT UPDATE 

Congratulations are in order! The 

following veterinarians have had their case 

reports pass between April 1 and July 15: 

Shana Berry-Buchanan, Stephanie Hintz, 

Teri Skadron, Jeff Grognet, Diana Drumm, 

Kim Pang, Jodi Van Tine, Elisa Bandelin, 

and Caroline Goulard. They are that much 

closer to certification. Congratulations for all 

their hard work and efforts. It’s always an 

accomplishment when that report is all done. 

If you haven’t written your case report 

yet, or if it needs some changes, don’t wait 

any longer! Reports can be submitted any 

time and it’s never too late to get it done. You 

spent a lot of time and energy finishing the 

course and taking your exams. Finish the 

last hurdles so you can finally receive your 

certification. It is definitely worth it! 

For instructions on how to write the report 

send an e-mail to petdoc@mchsi.com. Pay 

attention to every detail – it must be written 

according to all the requirements. The closer 

you follow it, the less you need to rewrite later!

IVAS LOSES A GOOD FRIEND 

IVAS received word that long-time member 

(since 1974) Dr. Bruce Sickels has passed 

away. Bruce was IVAS certified in 1976. 

Bruce Sickels was a great guy! He was a 

very easy going person, but very pleasurable 

to listen to and humble at the same time. As he 

walked into a room with that warm smile and 

calming voice, you knew this was a person 

you wanted to talk to and be associated with. 

He was one of the good ones and I personally 

am going to miss not being able to sit and 

visit with him again about the use of magnet 

implants in horses or just acupuncture and life 

in general - Thanks Bruce for sharing your 

knowledge with us and for using acupuncture 

in the care of your patients - I know they and 

their owners appreciated it also. 

See ya’ later at the ongoing acupuncture 

meeting upstairs - boy what a great bunch of 

people you must be hanging out with up there.

GERVAS 

The General Meeting of GERVAS took 

place in Lich in June. About 15 members 

took the chance to listen to two lectures 

before the meeting: 

Ursula Irmen told us about her experiences 

over the last seven years of doing both, horse 

dentistry and acupuncture. A lot of information 

was also important and interesting for those, who 

work with chiropractic/osteopathic patients. 

Uwe Petermann spoke about the 

connection of disturbing focus in teeth of 

the horse and the dog to special acupuncture 

points and how to use special flower essences 

in those cases. We thank them both for their 

interesting lectures!!! 

In wonderful weather we had lunch outside 

and turned then to the concerns of GERVAS. 

Ursula Irmen has unfortunately not 

enough time for her work in the Executive 

Committee any more and retired. Martina 

Steinmetz was elected as recording secretary 

in her place. The vice president, J.Y. Guray, 

did unfortunately not show up to this general 

meeting. A lot of questions needed to be 

discussed, as the congress next year in 

Germany, our finances, the IVAS basic course 

and so on. We found members willing to help 

for the congress and the basic course. I will 

soon send out a newsletter to let you know 

about some more details. 

The “Call for Papers” for the Congress 

in Germany was printed already in the last 

IVAS-Newsletter and we want to make this 

better known in Europe to possible speakers. 

Our Hompage still needs more input from our 

members and we hope to get it better in time.

IVAS MEMBER GETS NOTE IN JAVMA 

Dr. Billy D. Connolly (GA ‘66) established 

the Gwinnett Animal Hospital in Georgia 

in 1973. Along with a special interest in 

surgery, Dr. Connolly is trained in veterinary 

chiropractic, acupuncture, and homeopathy. 

As a result, his small animal and equine 

patients have received holistic treatments as 

well as more traditional care. He devotes time 

to kennel club programs.

CALL FOR PAPERS 

33rd Annual IVAS Congress 

Frankfurt, Germany 

August 22 – 25, 2007 

The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) will be holding our Annual Congress 

in Frankfurt, Germany at the Ramada Inn Micador, located in the suburb of Niedernhausen 

near the Taunus Mountain range. We are pleased to invite clinicians and other individuals to 

submit abstracts of a presentation for our Congress. Papers selected will be printed in the 2007 

Proceedings of the Society and presented at the Annual Congress in Frankfurt. 

Abstracts should be typewritten in English, double-spaced and should not exceed a single 

page of A4 paper with 2.5 cm margins. Abstracts can be sent by e-mail. If so, please format in 

a Microsoft Word document and send as an attached document identified as “Abstract Frankfurt 

Congress”. Please also include a cover letter with the names of all authors, Curriculum Vitae, 

phone number and e-mail address. 

There is not a general theme, all topics are welcomed. 

The deadline for submission is 1 November, 2007. 

Notification of acceptance will be sent by 1 December, 2007 to those selected by the program 

committee. The deadline for submission of the full articles for the Proceedings will be 1 

February, 2007. All acupuncture, acupuncture-related and Chinese medical therapy articles will 

be considered, including Chinese herbal medicine, food therapy and Chinese Tui-na therapies. 

There is also an opportunity to present posters. 

If you are interested in presenting a wetlab, either equine or small animal, please submit 

your ideas. 

Authors of selected papers for presentation receive complementary registration and a banquet 

ticket. Wetlab instructors also receive complimentary registration and a banquet ticket.
