Introduction California Born Heaven Bound
By James Griffin
The sun was shining brightly on that morning July 8th 1955. At Queen of Angels
Hospital in Hollywood Rosalie Griffin had just given birth to her 4th child James
Brian Griffin a healthy 8 pound baby. Rosalie now was the mother of four children.
Just 23 miles down the road Disneyland was celebrating their grand opening – Oh Yes
this was a great time to be alive. Fast forward the year was 1960 . James was starting
his first day of kindergarten and the pain of the first day of school was too much –
James cried for help........
hitting amazing shots, lousy shots, having good
bounces, bad bounces and learning as Bobby Jones
said you have to play where it lies.
Just like life as in golf some days are better
The Year was 1975 I had come back to my dorm room
after spending the Christmas Winter break in Sunny
California. The plane flight back to
Rochester, NY was lonely with thoughts of leaving
California where my family and friends were.
As the cab dropped me off at my dorm the weather was
gloomy and bitter cold with piles of snow plowed lining
a narrow path to my dorm entrance.
I felt alone sad.
Chapter 1
Growing up in So Cal
I thought about writing this book a few years ago. Let’s just say sometimes
life gets in the way of doing a project like writing a book. Well lets get this
party started. Yes as the title of the book states I was born in California
the Golden state in the City of Los Angeles at a hospital called Queen of
Angels which is now the Dream Center a faith-based charitable
Organization that I read finds and fills the needs of struggling people
from all over the United States by focusing on the areas of poverty, abuse,
and Addiction. I was aware that The Dream Center provided resources
in the form of Residential and outreach programs also. Thankfully I
have not had to use any of the services of the Dream Center but I was
invited to attend an event at the Dream Center by my pastor friend
James Love who lived in our neighborhood growing up. It was
interesting to see the changes to the place where I came into the world in
1955 as the 4th of 4 children. Although I was born in the City of Angels
my childhood residence was in the City of South Pasadena, CA about 20
minutes by auto from the Hospital. My Mom Rosalie delivered all her
4 children at the Queen since it was 2 blocks from my Dad’s Printing
Business on Temple Street in LA and was a highly rated hospital back in
the day in LA where many babies were born. Believe it or not back then
Dads were not allowed in the delivery area but were allowed to hang out
in the
waiting area to pass out cigars to family members and friends. Times
have sure changed a bit since the time I was born during the Baby Boom
era in the USA. “The baby-boom generation was the product of the
sudden increase in U.S. births occurring between 1946 and 1964. The
increase was largely the result of the renewed confidence and
security that followed the economic hardships and uncertainties of the
Great Depression and World War II.”
Believe it or not growing up
I was not exposed to
reading the Bible. I bought
my 1st Bible in 1974 at
the age of 19 the year I
accepted Jesus Christ as my
Lord Savior while
Arriving from the hospital to our home in South Pasadena, CA is not
something I recall, In fact I do not recall much as a toddler baby other
than maybe sitting on my lawn as a 2 or 3 year old and being
fascinated by a lady bug that had crawled onto my hand. To this day
I am in awe of lady bugs and of course all the beautiful creatures on
earth that God created. The Bible speaks to us alot about God’s
Creations
Revelation 4:11
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you
created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over
the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the
earth.”
Genesis 2:7
Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
sorrows. Whether you’re a parent, expectant parent, or grandparent,
there’s an endless well of comfort, advice, and quotes about gratitude
to be found in the Bible.” - Country Living
The good Lord got me through my early years without too many
scratches, bumps and bruises other than a few scares one which
happened on an errand with my Mom one morning. I was sitting in the
front seat of our Ford Country Squire Station Wagon. My mom pulled
around our circular driveway and as she pulled out of the driveway and
turned onto the street the passenger seat front door swung open where I
was sitting with no car seat of course. I happened to be holding onto the
door handle so I swung out of the car as the door opened and was
holding onto the large cushioned handle for dear life as I could hear my
Mom screaming in horror. Luckily she slowed down and came to a stop
and I was able to get up and back into the car safely. What could have
been a disaster turned out to be a moment not to forget.
I recall the only thing damaged were my shoes that scrapped on the road
for a few seconds as I was holding onto the car door with my feet both
dragging on the street as the car was moving. Another scare came when
my mom was driving. We must have been driving her crazy since there
were like 4 or 5 kids in the station wagon. As she was driving on a street
near our home she turned her head around not looking at the road and
then after trying to slap one of us and missing she tuned her attention
back to the road and low and behold she hit her brakes as just ahead the
cross bar for the railroad tracks had come done and seconds later a train
crossed the road. Lesson learned, keep your eyes on the road always.
During my youth days I was unaware of what it meant to be a Christian
and was definitely living in the world without a clue of what a personal
relationship with the Lord could be like. I do recall calling out for God
for help when I had tummy aches which happened to me quite a bit as a
pudgy kid. I finally figured out later in life that I was egg and milk
intolerant which was probably the cause of my frequent tummy aches.
Chapter 2
Youth / Education / College
Growing up as the youngest of 4 kids was a bit of advantage. My older
brothers and sisters were very popular and had a lots of friends who
frequented our house. I was a bit shy as a kid so I hung out with my
brothers friends and for the most part kids in our neighborhood. I was not
Religious as a kid although I was introduced to Religion going to church
every Sunday since my Mom was Catholic. She was committed to having
us attend church and catechism on Saturday which was not fun. My Dad
was a Protestant and Sunday was his Golf Day. I recall he came to church
with us one Sunday and his arms were folded across his chest the entire
service. My Dad was a good man and enjoyed life to fullest but religion
and attending Church was not for him. My Dad taught me many skills
in life and was a great mentor when I 1st started working with him in the
Printing Business. I spent many hours walking Fairways and greens with
my Dad who taught me and my brother how to play the game he loved.
I was baptized as baby, attended church went to Catechism but a
personal relationship with Lord was not something I knew or felt until the
day I accepted Christ into my life at the age of 19. During my youth my
parents divorced which was a difficult for my Mom and our entire family
affected by the Divorce. I started to experiment in drugs and marijuana
when i reached Junior High School and thankfully never got addicted to
Drugs although I can say at times I was as they say far out of myself as a
result of the drugs in my system. In the 60’s and 70s drug use and
marijuana was commonplace as was drinking among teens. I recall some
dangerous times where I think the Lord was certainly watching over me.
As for my public Education lets just say graduated from High School and
had no honors awards or scholarships It was a ho hum experience which
turned into a tragedy my Senior Year In High School when my older
brother Bobby was tragically killed in a small plane crash.
After this tragedy of losing my brother I was not in a good place I could
hardly enjoy life and went through the natural grieving process. I was not a
believer at the time my brother was killed and I know his death made me
think differently about my life and my future. I had been a follower all of
my life and had a pretty easy existence although I was going nowhere my
brothers death was something I has to reckon with. With Bob’s passing
the pain was incredible but life goes on.
Romans 14:8
“If we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the
Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to God.”
Luke 23:43
“Jesus replied, ‘I assure you that today you will be with me
in paradise.’
2 Corinthians 5:6-8
“So we are always confident, because we know that while we are
living in the body, we are away from our home with the Lord. We
live by faith and not by sight. We are confident, and we would prefer
to leave the body and to be at home with the Lord.”
As tragic and sad my Brother’s passing was my life was still to be lived.
His short life jump started my life I believe to get things done before
my clock on life stopped. I felt that life was short and I had to make
the most of my time in the flesh.
James 4:14
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is
your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and
then vanisheth away.
I graduated from HS three months after Bobs passing and started
attending Pasadena City College after HS not knowing what I
wanted to do with my life. In the summer after HS while working at
my Dads Printing Plant full time I decided that I wanted to earn a
degree in Printing from College. Not the best decision a young man
can make since I was following my Dads path and not my own, That
mistake later proved costly since my career I choose was truly not
my passion it was more wanting to connect with my Dad. My desire
put extra motivation into my studies. With an effort, paying attention
in class and actually spending time studying I started to improve my
grades enough to get accepted to College at Rochester Institute of
Technology in upstate NY. I had decided to pursue a career in the
Printing Industry where my Dad was very successful.
In Colossians 3:23-24, we’re told, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive
an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Our spirit goes to the spirit world.
Chapter 3
Tragedy /Questions /Why
When tragedy strikes we are not alone. God is with us every step of the
way. As Believers in Jesus Christ we are not immune from hard times,
Illness and death. The Good news as believers in Jesus Christ is that we
have eternal life and to be absent from the body is to be present with the
Lord.
John 11:25-26
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who
believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by
believing in me will never die.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal
glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what
is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but
what is unseen is eternal.
James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for
you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness
have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Chapter 4
Accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior
In everyones life we come to a crossroad I believe and that crossroad
came to me on a lonely night when I was in my dorm alone while attending
Rochester Institute of Technology in upstate New York as a Freshman
in 1975. For some reason while home for Christmas in Newport Beach
where my mom was living I went to Fashion Island and bought a Bible.
That Bible became my go to daily habit to read every morning in my dorm
room. I do recall the 1st few month of my College experience were full of
drinking lots of beer and doing the typical things College young Adults do
which is lots of stupid things, I was unsuccessful in attempt to be a walk On
Basketball Player at RIT Although I was the 13th man on 12 man squad
and missed the cut. Moving on from that I found peace and felt I was
growing in the getting to know the word of God through my Daily Bible
Readings. One night I don’t remember the exact date although I knew it
was late at night I was in my Dorm room polishing off a bottle of wine a
regular habit and I can still see and feel now suddenly a light appeared in
the darkness of my dorm room and it was no doubt the Holy Spirit Jesus
Christ paying me a visit in the my room. I felt the presence of the holy spirit
go through my body and then the light left. God had come into my life it
was real and allowed me to be born again in the name of Jesus Christ and
my Lord and Savior. After that encounter within a week I made a decision
to return to California my home state and attend college at Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo . That Came to pass as I was home in California in the fall of
1975 attending Cal Poly Slo.
“There are many manifestations of the touch of the Holy Spirit today. The Spirit’s touch
brings conviction of sin, the tangible presence of God, healing, refreshing, power, warmth,
revelation, joy, and so much more. To be touched by God through the Spirit is an undeniable,
supernatural experience.” - United faith Church
Chapter 5
Career / Ideas & Entrepreneurship
Something I learned was never pursue a career calling based on an
emotional reason. Looking back on my life like many I have made every
mistake in the book when it comes to choosing a career. The Good news I
made it through some bad choices and without God I may have thrown in
the rope as they say. God brought me throw and directed my paths to meet
the right people and make better choices. They say a person that
never fails at something is a rarity. I can’t agree more. Thankfully in our
fallen world we have people that have shined in their careers and jobs and
entrepreneurial ventures. We are all unique individuals and God has a plan
for all of us to enjoy our work and fulfill the great commission by sharing
the good news of eternal life wherever we go
What Is The Great Commission?
After Jesus brought salvation to the world by shedding His blood on the cross, He gave a
command to all believers to go and spread the gospel to all nations.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven
and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all
things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the
age.” Amen.
— Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
Be Led By The Spirit
First and foremost, we can do nothing without the Holy Spirit. He is the one that gives us
the power to do what the Bible says and guides us into all truth (John 15:26).
Chapter 7
Marriage / Divorce / Family / Friends
At first if you do not succeed try again. Well being a Christian does not
guarantee marriages going full term. Although your marriage may have
failed you are not the lone Ranger, God offers forgiveness for all our
shortcomings and encourages us to sin no more or in the case of multiple
marriages love the one your with. Along with your wife and children,
grandchildren and for some great grandkids family is the best and we
should cherish our time with family.
Friends are forever as they say although some go away we are blessed by all
our friends, neighbors, coworkers and of course our beloved pets too ..
In the Old Testament, we are taught, “Therefore shall a man leave
his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they
shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). Married couples are meant to be
unified in every possible way.
“God designed marriage for three primary purposes: companionship,
procreation, and redemption. These purposes are still relevant today
and are essential for a healthy society.” - eaglefamily.org
Friends encourage us to our highest good (1 Thessalonians 5:11);
Friends forgive each other and help each other in difficulties
Chapter 8
Grilled Cheese / Tomato Soup / Nuts & More
What does Grilled Cheese, Tomato Soup, nuts and more have to do with
California Born, Heaven Bound. Well let me tell you. Starting my Sales
Career at the age of 21 in Los Angeles my territory was pretty much from
Ventura to San Diego or wherever I could find accounts on the planet that
needed our printing services. One of the highlights of my sales job was not
only being out and about every day meeting people but the coolest part
of sales was having lunch at different cafes and restaurants around the five
county area of So Cal that being LA, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino
and Ventura counties. Thus grilled Cheese, Tomato Soup, Nuts and more.
Traveling on the road in a car for sometimes 4-6 hours a day I had to find
a food energy balance in my workday that would allow me to stay energized
but not overloaded, Double Cheeseburgers Fries and Milkshakes were not
on my plate. I found a grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl or cup of
Tomato soup was the magic that kept me going and thankfully Denny’s
offered both and I could usually find a Denny’s in most towns I traveled
too. The Nuts and More were my other favorite when I did not have time
to sit down for a nice lunch I would hit up a 7-11 and grab a small bag of
trail mix, with some peanut butter crackers for fuel and of course black
coffee always. Ok with all that said I will never forget a lunch break one
day in Pasadena,CA on Union Street. I went to Metal Hamburger stand
forget the name, walked in stood in line and ordered a simple hamburger
and coffee not grilled cheese on that day. While I was standing waiting for
order to be called a older man saw me and offered me a place to sit which
I obliged too. We exchanged pleasantries and he said he was a pastor. He
asked if I knew Jesus Christ and I said I did. He then went on to explain to
me that the Bible was similar to an owners manual for a car. It has
everything in it needed to help you in Life. He said many people continue
to look outside of the Bible for answers when all the answers are included
in the Holy Bible (continued on next page)
The Bible is the only book needed. His analogy he used is if you have a
cup of water you can only fill it so high and then It will spill over.
Therefore the Bible is the only Book you will need to guide you during
your life’s journey. Needless to say that lunch although it was not grilled
cheese, tomato, soup or nuts at the Metal Hamburger Stand with the Pastor
in 1986, enforced my belief in the bible as the book to read and keep as the
owners manual for life.
Why is the Bible likened to God’s owners manual for your life briefly?
It’s like God’s owner’s manual for your life. Like any good owner’s manual,
the Bible gives you instructions and you can consult it when you need
help. Second Timothy 3:17 says, “The scriptures are the comprehensive
equipment of the man of God and fit him fully for all branches of his
work”
Chapter 9
Fun Stuff / Humor
Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Psalm 37:13 But the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he sees that his day is coming.
James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering?
Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing
praise.
There is a saying I once heard life is Hornets Nest and then you
die. I believe God has a sense of humor as do all humans and even
some animals. God created all the animals Monkeys, Giraffes, Birds,
Fish Elephants and all the different people we see on the planet in
every shape, size, color and race. When push comes to shove if you
cannot wake up each day with a bit of a smile knowing God is Control
and you are able to freely roam about the cabin of life then so be
it. I try to laugh as much as I can since being pissed off, angry and
hateful is always a reality but you gotta let it go bro.. No harm no foul
I would rather be your friend than your foe.
Chapter 11
Health / Wellness
What Does the Bible Say About Eating Too Much?
“Gluttony and overindulgence are recurrent themes throughout the Bible.
Multiple passages throughout the book warn against the danger of eating
and drinking too much. After reading the passages about overindulgence
in food and wine, it’s clear that the biblical view holds these excesses to be
selfish and that they take focus away from praising and glorifying God.
A Bible verse about health goes even further by warning that those prone to
gluttony are going to be rewarded with poverty, as seen in Proverbs 23:20-
21: “Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the
drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe
them with rags.” Proverbs also reminds us that we must be conscious of
what and how much we are eating: “When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
observe carefully what is before you.”
The bottom line here is that we should exercise moderation in what we eat
and drink because moderation ensures that our minds are focused on praising
the Lord. Paul, once again, says as much in Corinthians 10:31:
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of
God.” - onlineschoolsreport.com
Chapter 12
Riding the Waves
Whatever life throws at you remember to ride the wave. Some waves
will trash you and thrash you and some will be gentle and easy. The
key is ride the waves and the storms of life knowing that God’s Got it
and you have placed your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ on every wave
you ride and every trial you will go through in life
“Life seems to move along in phases or waves and you have to ride out
each wave the best way you can.
Sometimes the waves are small and easily manageable, or there aren’t
any at all, and you might be in a place where you feel you have things
worked out.
But then a powerful tidal wave rolls in and you have no choice but to
be swept up by it.” - voicedialogue.com
Conclusion / Faith / Heaven Bound
If you read this book and you area already have accepted Jesus Christ as
your Lord and Savior then I’m sure we will meet up in heaven that is if I
do not get the chance to meet up beforehand with you in the flesh.
If you read this book and have not accepted Jesus Christ into your life as
your Lord and Savior I invite you to consider doing that at your earliest
convenience. I can guarantee you that it will be the best investment you
can make without costing you a dime.
Remember Jesus Loves you!
