Dear friends,
As 2010 came to a close we realized again how much we owe to each and every
one of you who holds this House close to your heart. We are full year round with
seriously ill children and their families and they need a clean room, a pantry, dinners,
friendly faces and all the support that we can gather. In 2010 that support meant
new furniture for the family bedrooms and TV areas, dinners most nights of the week,
therapy dogs every day and all together it added up to more volunteer hours than
ever before – over 36,000.
You help in so many ways to make this House a place of comfort, support and hope.
You send in donations, attend our events, drive the van, make quilts, cook dinner,
volunteer each week and together you helped ease the burden of nearly 700 families
who were going through the worst time of their lives. That support is so important to
the families who need this House. They often comment that people who didn’t even
know them volunteered their time and resources to help and that they will never
forget that.
We are honored to have such a large and committed group of friends. On behalf of all
of us here thank you so much for all that you do.

Our mission
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington & Alaska® supports families with seriously
ill children. Our programs include the Seattle Ronald McDonald House® and a van service for families
staying in Anchorage while their children receive medical care.

Our families
Judah’s Story
Sara and Jason, Judah’s parents, first met when Sara travelled from her home
in Washington state to volunteer for an organization in Belize, where Jason
already lived. Falling in love with each other and a life of volunteering, they
married and started a family, remaining in Belize. It was a life of family,
friends, and service, all in glorious natural surroundings.
Given the family’s overall well-being, it seemed odd when what appeared to
be a simple spider bite began annoying Judah, then 8 years old. A trip to the
doctor revealed no reason for concern and it was only as an extra precaution
the doctor decided to take a biopsy of the bothersome bump, which needed
to be sent to the United States for the testing. Six weeks later, the results gave
everyone a deep shock: cancer.
“We never in a million years thought it would be cancer,” says Jason, shaking
his head. “The diagnosis was Non-Hodgkins Blastic Lymphoma.” The very
next day, the family of 5 was en route to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Elijah,
Judah’s five-year-old brother, was so befuddled by all the sudden activity he
packed only stuffed animals in his luggage.
Judah’s aunt works in healthcare and one of the first things she told the family
when she found out they needed to go to Seattle Children’s Hospital was to
call the Ronald McDonald House. “We were so lost. Housing was the last
thing on our minds. Now having the House here has made it so we can deal
with everything else.” Sara explains.
The whole family was delighted to discover that rather than a dismal and stark
place, the House offers so much that is joyful. “I was surprised to see all the
other kids,” Keilah, Judah’s older sister says. “The staff and the volunteers who
work here are so nice; it’s fun here.” “It’s been wonderful getting to know so
many great families and making friends,” confirms Sara.
Jason and Sara also marvel at the contributions of volunteers to the House. “I
have never seen such a volunteering spirit as I have here in the past 8 months,”
says Jason. “I look forward to the kids getting older so we can come back and
volunteer ourselves.”

Our programs
Meal Program Helps Nourish Families
Volunteers Provide Hope and Care Through Preparing Meals
Volunteers make and serve dinner for families
at least 4 times a week. They provide
meals for 75 people in House A and 25
people in House C.
Recipe Book Created by and for Meal Program Volunteers
Contains Over 90 Recipes for Large Groups
Ask almost any family at the House what they appreciate
the most about being here, and the Meal Program is always
mentioned. At least 4 nights a week, and often more,
volunteer groups of friends or co-workers come into the
House and prepare homemade meals for the families to enjoy.
Volunteer kitchen supervisors devote their time to helping get
the groups started and ensure things run smoothly. A complete
and nutritious meal is always on the menu and includes
a main dish, vegetables, sides and, much to the children’s
delight, dessert. Always dessert!
These dinners are especially important to the families because
many times they have spent long and grueling days at the
hospital or are exhausted from medical appointments.
Providing a warm meal to their family is understandably the
last thing on their minds, yet vitally important to staying
healthy themselves. Families marvel at this tangible evidence
of our community’s caring. “The volunteers who cook the
dinners – they are always so kind and polite. The meals are
really wonderful and very, very much appreciated, especially
after 12-hour days in the hospital,” say Phillip and Jennifer,
parents of 3-year-old Luke.
Volunteer participation in the Meal Program has increased
year by year from its modest yet meaningful beginning. "We
started with 20 dinners per year in House C," remembers Judy
Adams, Manager of Volunteer Services. "Now our goal is to
serve dinners 5 nights per week in both House A and C."
Whether they get to eat at mealtime or come in later to find
leftovers, families are extremely grateful for the dinners. "A lot
of times, if those dinners weren't provided, I wouldn't eat at
all." says a father.
From Ambrosia to Breakfast Burritos, Italian Chicken to Meatball Stroganoff Supreme,
the House's first recipe book aims to please palates, provide nutrition and help the
dinner groups tackle the important task of cooking for large groups with ease.
In addition to recipes, the book includes quantity conversions, kitchen and work flow
charts and other helpful information. The families and staff of the House extend our
warmest thanks to the volunteers who enable this valuable program to exist.

Our volunteers
Kite-making is loads of fun with lots of pretty colors to use
To say that volunteers are the heart of the House is an
understatement. Volunteers help the families in all ways, large and
small. They clean, cook, bring therapy dogs to visit, pull weeds,
plant flowers, bake cookies, host movie nights, drive vans on
shopping expeditions, run food drives and so much more.
Children staying at the House particularly appreciate the activities,
which are run by volunteers and often coincide with dinnertime.
Activities in 2010 included dance lessons, cookie decorating, a
wide variety of crafts, sports team visits and plate painting.
The activities provide an especially bright spot in otherwise dull
days of either medical appointments or the interminable waiting
in between treatments. “When Henry knows there is an activity
planned, he always wants to make sure we get back to the House
in time to participate,” says one mother.
Activities also give the kids staying at the House the opportunity
to make and be with friends, and parents enjoy the short break
while knowing their children are amused and occupied.
Procedural changes to keep activities safe and high quality were
introduced in 2010, and instead of the expected drop in volunteer
participants, the number of activities actually increased, much to
everyone's delight.
"I like activities because we do fun things. I like to build
stuff - building stuff is fun. And my mom says she's going to
hire me as a painter because I'm a really good painter."
