COMMUNITY PROFILE

The Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce, the

2013 Missouri Chamber of the Year, is proud to present its

2023 Community Profile and Membership Directory. Our

community is comprised of two cities, Waynesville and St.

Robert, and the surrounding rural areas. The combined

estimated population was approximately 52,000 at the end of

2018; Fort Leonard Wood, which is contiguous to the cities,

has a day time population of roughly 32,000. Fort Leonard

Wood is a Department of Defense installation. It is the home

of the Engineer, Military Police, and Chemical, Biological,

Radiological, and Nuclear schools and provides training for

all branches of the Armed Services. We are truly blessed to

have the best of both worlds--a rural lifestyle with the benefits of larger cities.

Our Chamber is committed to advancing the commercial, industrial, agricultural, educational, civic,

and community interests of the residents and businesses in the region. The Chamber is your partner in

connecting businesses, showcasing our community and developing our leaders.

Waynesville and St. Robert are bisected by Interstate 44, which provides access to Fort Leonard Wood

and the Waynesville/St. Robert Regional Airport. Commercial air travel is available with daily flights.

Our community enjoys the benefit of one of the most exceptional school systems in the state. The

Waynesville R-VI school district operates six elementary schools (one in St. Robert, one in Waynesville,

four on Fort Leonard Wood), one Sixth Grade Center, one middle school, and one high school, plus a

Career Center. The area also has a multitude of higher and continuing education opportunities.

AREA OVERVIEW

Nestled in the picturesque rolling

hills of Missouri’s Ozark region

are the towns of Waynesville and

St. Robert. These communities are rapidly

growing, and the Chamber of Commerce is

leading the way with its mission to continue

the area’s prosperity and success.

The landscape of winding rivers and

sparkling streams, lush forests, dramatic

limestone rock formations, and caves provide

the backdrop that makes these communities

so appealing to new residents and businesses.

Outdoor adventurers are drawn to swimming,

spelunking, backpacking, camping, and

hunting. The Gasconade and Big Piney Rivers

frequently host families that enjoy fishing,

swimming and canoeing. The Roubidoux

River is home of a National Park Service Trail

of Tears site, the internationally famous diving

site in the Roubidoux Spring Cave, as well as,

award-winning trout fishing.

The economy of Waynesville-St. Robert

is flourishing thanks to the constant arrival

of new business and the growth of local

tourism. The subsequent improvements in

city infrastructure promise the continued

prosperity of both communities. The

Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of

Commerce is at the forefront of this effort.

Waynesville proudly displays its rich history

while embracing the future. A tour of the

Waynesville town square reveals a charming

community where local businesses reside

beside historic establishments. The Pulaski

County Courthouse sits beside the Old

Courthouse Museum, which dates back to the

early 1900s. The original courthouse has been

restored and is home to the Pulaski County

Historical Society. Across the square, the Old

Stagecoach Stop has been a local landmark for

over a century.

Waynesville is a family-oriented

community and continuing

improvements promise to

bring additional business. Perhaps most

noteworthy is the

extension of Highway

H, which provides

convenient access to

Fort Leonard Wood

from Waynesville. The

extension not only

alleviates traffic in St.

Robert, but will also

promote new business

in Waynesville by

affording easier access

and traffic flow through

Waynesville and

opening new markets

for real estate. One

major local interest

already located along Highway H is the

Missouri State Veterans’ Cemetery. Within

the cemetery is the Veterans’ Memorial

dedicated by the community to honor

veterans.

Waynesville is ever committed to historic

preservation and economic development.

In May 2005, the town applied for the

Downtown Revitalization Grant to

supplement local business contributions,

which has enhanced the downtown area with

beautification projects that include sidewalk

replacement, landscaping, the addition of

vintage lighting, and a town clock. In 2010,

the City of Waynesville was honored with the

state designation as a DREAM community

which focuses on downtown revitalization.

Also increasing the attractiveness

of Waynesville to new business is the

Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport

at Forney Field located on Fort Leonard

Wood. The airfield is run jointly by the

City of Waynesville and City of St. Robert,

and has increased its flight traffic to offer

more convenient commuter access to larger

metropolitan airports including daily flights to

Nashville and Dallas-Fort Worth. The airfield

also serves Fort Leonard Wood.

Waynesville’s

picturesque Laughlin

and Roubidoux Parks

have been enhanced by

the fitness/walking trail

that spans both parks.

The trail follows the

Roubidoux River, under

Roubidoux Bridge, and

into Laughlin Park.

The park is also home

to picnic pavilions,

ball fields, new allaccess

Little Heroes

playground, band shell,

a Fitness Court, and a

splash park that is open

to the public throughout the summer months.

Next to Waynesville, relatively young St.

Robert is also benefiting from rapid growth.

St. Robert was formed in 1951 and is the

business and economic hub for Pulaski

County. Evidence of St. Robert’s rapid growth

can be found in the more than 350 businesses

consisting of both national franchises and

locally owned businesses. Additionally, the

city’s growing tourism industry supports over

3,600 hotel rooms.

The sound financial condition of St. Robert

enabled many improvements in infrastructure

and in the quality of life for residents. Once a

convenience community that rose to support

Fort Leonard Wood, the area has since tripled

in size and solidified its own identity with the

completion of several city projects. St. Robert

expanded and upgraded Missouri Avenue,

which is the main road through the heart of

town, as well as the primary entrance to Fort

Leonard Wood. The renovation increased the

road width from two lanes per direction to

three lanes and also added two outer roads.

Central Ozark Medical Center has been providing quality health care in Central Missouri since 1979.

The reconstruction included

landscaping and the addition of

improved traffic signals, which

resulted in more efficient traffic flow and easier

access to surrounding businesses.

St. Robert maintains a city park, complete

with picnic and playground areas, softball

and soccer field and a community center.

The Community Center is used extensively

by families and various organizations for a

multitude of events which include craft and

antique shows. Additional plans are in place to

provide more recreational opportunities and

community support for residents.

St. Robert also maintains a network of

walking trails, which were financed through

state and federal grants. The walking trail

system remains a work in progress, and

when complete, the city will have reached

the goal of making St. Robert a truly

walkable community. Additional recreation

opportunities can be found in the indoor/

outdoor aquatics center and the 9 hole St.

Robert Municipal Golf Course.

Future plans for St. Robert include the

construction of additional commercial

and residential developments. In 2002, the

city purchased a 4.5-acre site and created

a green space to be used as a recreational

area. The development, recommendation

and implementation of policies, programs

and procedures that accomplish the city’s

goals and objectives to ensure the continued

economic health and vitality of the city is a

priority.

As a tribute to members of the Armed

Forces, two M-60 tanks, one an Army

Fort Leonard Wood front gate 1940s

tank and the other a Marine tank, were

decommissioned from active service and

installed in two lit and landscaped parks

within St. Robert. One park has large rocks

that identify local military units alongside the

newly added Freedom Rock while the other

is planned to have a “Neon” park to celebrate

Route 66.

St. Robert serves as the main gateway to

Fort Leonard Wood and maintains a strong

bond with the neighboring community. Fort

Leonard Wood is an Army installation that

dates back to World War II, and is home of

the Army’s Maneuver Support Center of

Excellence as well as a state of the art training

facility for the Army Engineer School, Military

Police School and Chemical, Biological,

Radiological, and Nuclear School.

Boasting enviable economic growth,

abundance of economic resources, access to

major roadways, and a combined population

of over 25,000 residents, the communities of

St. Robert, Waynesville, and Fort Leonard

Wood have set the foundation for future

prosperity.

A

s early explorers and pioneers

migrated west the state of Missouri

was formed and divided into a

number of counties. Originally inhabited

by the Osage Indians, settlers soon arrived,

attracted by the wooded

forests and intriguing

landscape of rolling

hills, valleys, and caves.

Pulaski County was

recognized in 1833 by

the State Legislature

in honor of Count

Pulaski, a Polish Patriot.

In 1838, the Cherokee

Indians traveled across

the area on their ‘Trail

of Tears” to Oklahoma.

The area witnessed the

era of the stagecoach,

the Civil War, the rise of the railroad, and the

development of Route 66.

Waynesville is the oldest town in Pulaski

County, established in 1843 primarily

by pioneers arriving from the South.

Waynesville derived its name from the famous

Revolutionary War hero “Mad Anthony”

Wayne. The town originated as a trading post

for fur traders and trappers and eventually

became an agricultural community. Most

local residents were farmers, but many

supplemented their income by cutting trees to

make railroad ties for the local railroad.

As America’s boundaries shifted west.

Waynesville became an important stagecoach

stop for pioneers. The pre Civil War Old

Stagecoach Stop still stands on the east

side of the courthouse square in downtown

Waynesville. It is the oldest building in

Pulaski County and is listed on the National

Register of Historic Places. The Old

Stagecoach Stop served as a hotel, tavern and

a post office for travelers on the St. Louis to

Springfield Road.

The fourth Pulaski County Courthouse was built

in 1903 for $10.200. It is used as a museum today

and stands next to the Pulaski County Courthouse

in Waynesville, MO.

Waynesville was designated as the county

seat. The first sessions of court were in private

homes. The first log courthouse in Pulaski

County was built in 1837 on the south side

of the square. Three

years later in 1840 it

was replaced by a brick

building that was badly

burned in the Civil War.

A third brick building

was built and burned

in 1903. It was replaced

by the Old Courthouse,

which today houses

a museum featuring

Pulaski County artifacts,

including blacksmith

and carpentry tools,

quilts, school materials

and Civil War era items.

The current $4.4 million, 50,000 square

foot Pulaski County Courthouse opened in

January of 1990. It is listed on the National

Register of Historic Places.

The Civil War had a dramatic affect on

Waynesville. The area was predominantly

Southern territory at the start of the war, but

many residents avoided joining the battle.

Its location on the Old Wire Road placed

Waynesville in the middle of the supply route

on which the Union Army moved men and

supplies.

The arrival of the Union Army and its

establishment of a fort on the bluff

overlooking the Roubidoux Spring forced

locals to pick their allegiances. The once

peaceful agricultural community soon found

themselves at odds with neighbors and family

members.

The Union fort’s mission was to protect the

Old Wire Road. A historical marker on Fort

Street is all that remains.

As the Civil War escalated in Missouri,

many Waynesville residents left.

Men joined either the Union Army or

Confederate militias

or guerilla groups;

women and children

moved to safer

territory in Illinois.

Farms, homes, and

businesses were

looted and destroyed

or burned. Many

residents never

returned; those that

did, found their homes

destroyed, overgrown,

and livestock lost.

The Old Stagecoach Stop was turned into

a hospital to treat wounded soldiers. Since

its construction, the structure has stood as a

silent witness of the eras of Pulaski County

history.

It survived through the settlement. Civil

War, reconstruction, the traffic on Route

66 and World War II. Always evolving with

the times, the Stagecoach Stop was also used

at varying points in history as a hospital,

dentist’s office, and now contains a room

with excavation artifacts, a display of WWII

memorabilia and the Museum Shop.

Stagecoaches soon made way for railroads,

and by 1926, automobiles became a popular

method of travel. The U.S. government

commissioned a 2,400 mile road that

would travel from Chicago, Illinois, to

Santa Monica, California, the road would

span 10 counties and 300 miles in Missouri

and would travel through the heart of

Waynesville. The construction of the U.S.

Route 66 through Waynesville opened up an

economy outside of agriculture for the area.

Old Stagecoach Stop Foundatlon restored and

maintains what is probably the most prominent

historic location In Pulaski County.

Originally a gravel state road, Route 66

follows an ancient ridge that was trod by

migrating game and traveled by Indians in

search of food. Before the Civil War, white

settlers knew the route as the St. Louis to

Springfield Road.

It became a communication corridor

during the Civil War.

Eventually business

enterprises, such as

motels, restaurants,

a hillbilly store, and

Ozark basket sellers

settled along the road.

They served as catalysts

for the area’s growth.

Modern day travelers of

the route are offered a

glimpse into American

and Pulaski County history. A drive along

the scenic road is dotted with remnants of

old businesses, renovated shops, panoramic

views and dramatic rock formations.

The construction of Fort Leonard Wood

during World War II launched the county’s

last 50 years of growth and development and

spurred the rise of St. Robert. Established in

1940, the post served as an infantry division

training area for World War II soldiers.

Fort Leonard Wood quickly took on an

engineer training mission until the end of

World War II in 1945. During

the Korean War Fort Leonard Wood served

as a training facility again. The post was

briefly deactivated, but the military demands

of the Cold War and aggressive efforts by

local community leaders led to the decision

to make Fort Leonard Wood a permanent

installation, resulting in a significant increase

in training load, troop numbers, and building

construction.

Fort Leonard Wood underwent further

growth in the mid-90s when the Army

moved the Chemical Corps and Military

Police Training Schools to join the Engineer

Training School.

Today, Fort Leonard Wood is home to

the Army’s Maneuver Support Center of

Excellence and members of all branches

of the U.S. military, and is a state-of-the art

training facility.

The Village of Waynesville incorporated

and became the Town of Waynesville in

1901. In 1931, the City

of Waynesville was incorporated as a city

of the fourth class, and in 1971 the status

changed to a city of the third class.

St. Robert was incorporated in 1951. St.

Robert was first chartered as a village with

500 residents. In recent years, the city has

more than tripled in size.

The Waynesville-St. Robert area has grown

Nestled in the timeless Ozark

Water Park is always a hit with families

during the summer months with

year-round indoor swimming found at

the Aquatic Center. Skaters can bring

their boards to the Rotary Club Skate

Park. Golfers can enjoy an afternoon

at the 9-hole, 3-par, putt and pitch

municipal golf course. The George M.

Reed Roadside Park, along historic

Route 66, will feature Route 66 Neon

Park open-air museum late summer of

2023. History buffs and patriots will

want to visit the Saint Robert Museum,

U.S.O. Chimney Commemorative, and

Freedom Rock and military tribute.

While in Waynesville enjoy

Roubidoux Park and Laughlin Park.

Both parks provide access to the

Roubidoux River and are connected

by a paved walking trail. Roubidoux

Park is home to Old Settlers Days, the

annual 2-day Cave State Cruisers Car

Show, the 3-day Route 66 Fogs & Frogs

Festival, and numerous community

festivals and events. The park also

features occasional concerts under the

bandshell and pavilions for picnicking

and gatherings and the Fitness Court

offering 7 functional training zones.

A major focal point is the Little

Heroes Playground, an all-accessible

play area. Laughlin Park includes the

world-famous Roubidoux Spring and

the Trail of Tears National Historic

Trail Cherokee Campsite. Seven

interpretative signs have been installed

between the spring and the former

ford (river crossing) just north of the

bridge. History enthusiasts will also

want to explore the 1903 Courthouse

Museum and the Old Stagecoach Stopboth

are listed on the National Register

of Historic Places. Pulaski County

Tourism Bureau offers a free downtown

Waynesville Walking Tour brochure. It

can be found at many of the one-of-akind

eateries, gift boutiques, or antique

stores on the Square or at the Pulaski

County Visitors Center. Take you photo

at the 8-foot Waynesville Route 66

Shield or in front of murals throughout

the city. Catch a show at Theater on the

Square playhouse or enjoy the newest

Hollywood blockbuster on the Grand

Screen at the state-of-the-art movie

theater in West Waynesville.

St. Robert Visitor Center

Visitors to Fort Leonard Wood

shouldn’t miss Mahaffey Museum

Complex. This is the only place in

the country where you can tour three

United States Army branch museumsthe

Military Police Museum, the

Chemical Corps Museum, and the

Engineer Museum, in a single location.

A historic driving tour map can be

obtained at the Front Gate Visitors

Center. Stone Mill Spring, and Piney

Valley Golf Course should also be

included on your itinerary!

Historic Route 66 ties the

communities of Saint Robert and

Waynesville together. Much more

than a road, Route 66 is also a worldfamous

destination. Thirty-three

miles of the fabled Mother Road cross

Pulaski County from east to west and

many “roadies” recognize Pulaski

County’s stretch as one of the most

scenic on the eight-state route. Pulaski

County Tourism Bureau offers a free

turn-by-turn brochure that includes

vintage photographs and historical

notes. It can be found at many of the

hotels, outfitters, eateries, boutiques,

antique stores, museums, and

attractions throughout Saint Robert

and Waynesville or the Pulaski County

Visitors Center.

Pulaski County is also home various

museums, multiple golf courses, Frog

Hill half-marathon, the Nasty Pulaski

a 65-mile high-endurance gravel grind,

music festivals, craft festivals, indoor

shooting and outdoor archery range,

haunted attractions, classic roadside

stops, railroad heritage, scenic drives,

shopping, and extensive choice of

eateries.

Visitors Center, located at 137 St.

Robert Boulevard, Saint Robert is open

CHAMBER EVENTS

The Chamber of Commerce hosts many community and fundraising events throughout the

year. We are always looking for new and fun ways to raise funding for our activities.

Community Leadership Awards Banquet. This exciting event recognizes and honors all of our community leaders. The Chamber

pays tribute to an organization and volunteer that has shown outstanding support to the Chamber. The distinguished award for

the evening is the Citizen of the Year.

The Veterans’ Day Ceremony and Parade is held every year in

Waynesville or St. Robert to honor our Veterans.

Purchase a Taste of Pulaski County Passport for discounts

and special offers to a variety of restaurants. Turn in passports

after visiting a minimum of 5 restaurants and be entered for

restaurant gift card drawings. During the Online Basket

Auction you can bid on local baskets of goodies and gift

certificates donated by businesses and organizations.

The Chamber hands out free hot dogs and soda at Community

Pride Night prior to the start of the Waynesville Tigers

homecoming football game.

Join us for Light Up Pulaski County, a holiday lights

celebration and contest. This is a great opportunity for

revisiting traditions and creating memories by being together

with family and friends to share in the joy that holiday

lights bring. The map of participants can be found at www.

EDUCATION

Waynesville R-VI School District: A Leader in K-12 Education

From pre-school for children with special

needs to dual credit and AP college

courses for high school students, the

Waynesville R-VI School District serves each

individual student. Known for strong academic

performance, Waynesville R-VI students

perform above average on most states.

Waynesville R-VI offers outstanding facilities

and a one-to-one Chromebook to student

ratio for students in grades K-12. In addition,

several buses that are used for long-distance

competitions and trips are equipped with wi-fi

to help keep students connected.

The Waynesville R-VI School District serves

the communities of Waynesville, St. Robert and

Fort Leonard Wood; its mission is to, “Prepare

and empower individual lifelong learners for

opportunities as citizens and leaders.”

To prepare students for a global economy,

students focus on collaboration with others,

creatively solving problems, thinking critically,

and communicating effectively throughout their

core and elective courses.

The district has about 5,800 students in 11

schools, which are located both off and on post.

Between 65 and 70% of the students are military

impacted, making this one of the most mobile

and diverse student populations in the state.

Programs, such as Student-to-Student, help

students make friends quickly and acclimate to

becoming Tigers. In addition, athletics, band,

student organizations and Club Tiger (an

active after-school program) engage students in

leadership opportunities outside the classroom.

Coding and robotics clubs are available after

school at all of the district’s K-12 buildings.

More than half of the district’s teachers hold

a master’s degree or higher, and the district’s

teacher-to-student ratio affords opportunities

for individualized instruction. School libraries/

media centers offer both technological and

traditional research tools to support instruction.

Designated an A+ high school, nearly

three-fourths of the graduates enter college.

The extensive curriculum includes college

preparatory courses, including AP classes,

and college credit courses. In addition, the

Waynesville Career Center’s programs range

from auto service technology and masonry to

graphic design and culinary arts. An awardwinning

JROTC program competes regularly.

At Williams Early Childhood Center, various

Center offers 40 spots for preschool students

of institution with campuses in the

Waynesville-St. Robert area. Columbia

College, Lincoln University, Ozarks

Technical Community College, and Park

University are schools that expanded from

their campuses with local offices offering

classes and/or degree options for the

community.

Besides on-campus learning many of these

schools also offer online learning. This

added flexibility enables many military

personnel and working civilians the

opportunity to further their education.

In addition to these traditional higher

education facilities St. Robert is home

to the Central College of Cosmetology.

Waynesville Career Center (WCC)

offers a variety of community education

classes during the evening as well as other

nontraditional adult only programs such as

Licensed Practical Nursing.

Whether you’re starting or finishing your

degree or working on getting certification

or your license in your chosen vocation,

the Waynesville-St. Robert area has the

educational resources to help you meet your

educational goals.

The Truman Education Center houses Park

Hospital Association. At GLWACH, the

staff strives to provide excellent medical care

For emergencies, Fort Leonard Wood’s

GLWACH emergency room accepts nonmilitary

patients. For veterans, Truman

VA recently opened the Fort Leonard

Wood Community Out-Patient Clinic in

Waynesville.

With a commitment to bring to life

the healing ministry of Jesus through

compassionate care and exceptional service,

Mercy serves this community with more

than 50 doctors and advanced practitioners.

Mercy Clinic – St Robert is located at 608

Old Route 66 in St Robert and is only five

minutes away from Ft. Leonard Wood. It’s

open seven days a week and offers care for

the entire family, from children through

adults. When you need care quickly, take

advantage of the clinic’s convenient care

option, available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The clinic

also offers specialty care, including podiatry,

orthopedics, adult and pediatric cardiology,

general and vascular surgery. Patients can

receive both cardiac rehabilitation and

physical therapy locally. The Mercy St.

Robert campus is home to Life Line II

helicopter, which serves St Robert and

surrounding communities with critical care
